  • Thanks for joining me today friends as we transplant this old red lake currant bush into something a little bit more mobile. It's not even the first time this poor plant has lived in a barrel so with any luck it won't suffer too much shock from the whole experience. Just to help it out, we're going to take a couple dozen cuttings and try to make some more plants with them as a bit of a bonus! So far, attempts to root currants this way have been pretty successful so ... here's to hope!
Happy gardening everyone and blessed be!

Looking good JT. I wish the birds here would learn to share my blueberries with me. As soon as a berry gets ripe the local blackbird makes off with it. Keep up the good work my friend.

Sounds like the robins with our saskatoons! The minute they're ready to pick, there's half a dozen robins fighting for a place in the bush!

That's a really great idea ! If you get all those cuttings going good you can make currant wine . Thanks for sharing !

Will you be sheltering it over the winter in the shed?

Nope, that poor sucker is going to have to tough it out in the cold. It survived it's first winter here in a little 3 gallon pail, so I'm hopeful!

Hey JT , I am from Germany and I really enjoy your videos. Especially the series about Air Layering was very informative, as there is not much information about this technique here in Germany. What varieties of black currants do you have and which is your favorite?

The ones I bought last year were called Ben Conan, I think, but I don't have a favorite yet. Haven't tried enough to choose one yet!

I have white and red currant in pots that are waiting to be planted but i am not sure at what time of year it should be done. I was thinking of doing it next month, just before the season is completely over.

Our currants lived through the first winter out here in that little 3 gallon pail so they're nice and hardy but I would get those in on the next nice gardening day! I'm still looking into getting use some white currants for the collection, so much fun to gather up as many varieties as I can find! Happy gardening my friend!

I have been told when you take cuttings you take green in spring and brown in the fall and since we're midway between the two we'll find out which takes the best and why don't you take off as many of those leaves that you think are going to fall off naturally since it has no roots to support the leaves. It sounds like you are going to be going into the current bush business have you thought about selling them?

I'll be curious to see which type of cutting roots better but to be honest I'm hoping for both! I leave the leaves on so that they can collect sunlight to make the sugars the plant needs to grow it's roots & try to form relationships with soil bacteria. Sure, they will die and fall off but not until they have collected every last drop of solar energy they can for the plant!
