    😲 That’s absolutely awesome! I have four Redcurrant bushes; one from 2019 (the biggest); two from 2020 and one from 2022. I love making Redcurrant Jelly and crumbles and pies with them! Absolutely amazing! 😋

    I grow black currants in Indiana, USA. Most Americans don't know currants, but I have an English mother, so I've always known them. Easy to grow. High nutritional value. With some late frosts this year, they have recovered. I use to make jelly or jam, or keep frozen for bread making, or put on cereal or in yogurt. For the space they take in the garden, it's well worth it to grow currants. I got mine from Indiana Berry Co., in Plymouth, IN.

    I seen a tree today that was a red currant round 25 feet tall 20 feet wide. I grabbed as many berries as I could so I can grow that again. I know you want to eat your food, but if you grew some of those again you would have a Lotta money.😊

    I grow the red and black ones in Nebraska. One whole side of my house is nothing but alternating black and red current bushes. I do trim the tops to make them all even so it looks nice. But they produce a lot of berries.

    Great video thanks for sharing your knowledge. And your daughter is precious😊! I planted my tree in soil and keep it in the window. Each time three leaves grow and look great but then they wither and fall off and then three more grow and wither again. This has happened three times now. Do you have any idea what is wrong?

      Ah, Yes. It's very dry there.Not great for soft fruits. However good for things like Melons and stuff, I guess everything is a trade off no matter where you are in the world. Is grass always greener though huh? Sometimes I wish to be somewhere dry. Wales has around 3300mm of rainfall a year so it's wet here a lot. But again I bet you wish for rain sometimes too lol

  • @pondguru

    I'd say that qualifies as huge and they were in pristine condition too. I have a few blackcurrant and redcurrant bushes around my place but they don't get much attention then the berries get hammered by the nation of blackbirds and thrushes we have here.
    When we develop the other side of the garden I intend to start properly growing fruit and vegetables so I know where I will be watching for advice (I know bugger all about that...)

    Hi Tony,
    I wish I'd had seen your pruning video last year !
    Still, we managed to get 1.5 kg off our single bush yesterday, which we made into redcurrant & chilli jelly this morning.
    Nice tip on using the fork to strip the berries from the stalks, however you don't need to do this at all if you are just making jelly - the stalks get strained out with the rest of the solids.
    By the way, I am in the process of designing / building my own polytunnel (2 x 4 m), inspired to a large extent by your video series. I managed to scrounge a load of old decking boards and joists from a neighbour's skip, so the basic cost should come in at under £100 (mainly the plastic pipe and sheeting). Unless you know of some reason why I shouldn't use it, I am going to use UV resistant PVC sheeting rather than the polythene which everyone else seems to use.
    Oh. and I made a hand-cranked trommel last week after seeing yours. Mine uses a couple of plastic plant pots instead of the bicycle wheels, a sheet of mesh bought from Wilko's, some bits of the reclaimed timber and several other bits of recycled rubbish. It works a treat !
    Thanks again for the information and the inspiration.

    • @simplifygardening
      @simplifygardening  7 років тому

      Your right about not needing to strip the stalks off if making Jelly but as we use the fruit for all sorts of stuff we do it as a matter of course. The polytunnel will be fantastic and you won't know yourself when you have it. It's the one thing all gardeners should have a tunnel or greenhouse.
      The trommel sounds cool. In fact, that reminds me to take mine to my mums as she needs to borrow it. I do need to build a new frame for it this year so maybe another video on it will be coming up When I can find the time lol.
      I am so glad my videos are inspiring you to go and try things yourself and put your own spin on them. It's the very reason I make them :) All you need now is a pond (Did I mention I have a few videos on those too ) lol

    I planted red currants last year, but they had some rather terrible branches - bent all over, broken, and such - got some good cuttings out of the deal though, and they came back, but some of them look a bit bendy, as it were. Had a small cluster on the one, but I think the wind knocked it off. We'll see what next year brings.

    • @simplifygardening
      @simplifygardening  7 років тому +1

      The idea with all currents is to prune 1/3 of the plant every year. you cut this right back tot he ground, so 1/3 of the oldest wood goes. currants fruit on 2nd and 3rd-year growth than its time to get rid. First-year growth won't fruit. pruning in this way will renew the plant every 3 years. I have 5 plants. and all that fruit came off the 5. How old are your bushes?

    • @simplifygardening
      @simplifygardening  7 років тому

      Take a load of semi ripe cuttings now, ideal as soon as the fruit is off the plant. cut them to around 9 inches long and just below a bud. scrape one side of the cutting about 2 inches from the base up one side down to the light green cambium layer. if you have rooting compound (powder or gel makes no difference) dip it in that. If not, don't worry. Then pot them all up in one pot... I will try and make a video for you in the next week or so which will help more
