  • Winter is the best time to plant out your currant bushes. I'm planting a white, red and black currant. Whether you get your plants in a pot, or bare rooted (without any soil) they need to be planted in exactly the same way. Currants make wonderful jellies, jams, and if I get enough I might even try making some wine. Here's how I plant mine.

I'm so glad I found your channel again! I used to watch your Chanel all the time when I first started my garden, still remember you pumping out the bathwater when you had a hose pipe ban!

I have a red that gets the best fruit! I make jam every year. I also have a black but the taste is awful. I bought white last year and potted it as it was very small. Here in Nebraska you can only plant in the fall before the ground freezes or in the spring after the ground thaws. So if it survives I will plant it around April.

What variety black currant do you have? Maybe try another variety. They should all taste wonderful. For blackcurrants, try Ebony. Ben Lomond these are very tasty.

clairesallotment I don’t know the variety as it was a marked down plant at the end of the season when I got it. I will look for another variety that you suggested. Thanks!

Nice one Claire - good advice.
I'm going to plant my 3 berries (White, black & red) in 30L pots this year as they just do not grow on my allotment.

That's fine, as long as the pots are big enough.

That earth is like butter. Thank you for this information. I've just bought a red and black currant. End of April tho. They both split into perfect 3 fan shape. Is this something you think I can train every year when I prune? I want it to cover a concrete wall in a sunny spot which is around 5" high

I'd recently put fresh soil in that bed. I'd left it to settle for a month before I put anything in. But the place I get my soil from is fabulous, there's some sand in it and it's very fine, perfect really. Yes you can train them how you want. When you prune them back, just tie in the new branches onto a frame and they'll grow happily that way the following year.

I enjoyed the information provided however, I do feel that she stated the obvious a bit too much.
