- If you have been considering purchasing one of these tents, but can't quite make up your mind on which one to get, I made this video for you.
A comparison video of two popular hot tent options from the folks @LuxeHikingGear. The Octopeak and the Megahorn. I hope this video helps you decide what tent is best for you.
This is not a sponsored video. Both of these tents are my own personal tents that were purchased with my own money. Because hot tents are cool.
Thank you for watching,
Justin

UPDATE.............DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM LHG. They are ripping people off. Their supply has been terminated by Luxe Outdoors. Luxe Hiking Gear is NO LONGER a distributor for Luxe Outdoors ua-cam.com/video/9kszDvXQybM/v-deo.html&t
Thank you for this. You spared me from wasting my money on either one. 🙏🏼
Glad I could help!
Thanks Justin for a great review on good gear. Always good to learn about what’s out there! Appreciate your thoughts and setting up both tents. Of course your little helper made it perfect as always...👌!
Best helper ever!!! Thanks for stopping by Pete
Thanks for the comparison. One of a few that show cots inside the tent. You've helped me make a more informed decision on what is best for my family.
You are welcome. I am glad you found the video useful. These are good tents.
Touche, Justin i believe u nailed it! Would've reccomended screws but avoid misinterpretation!
Thank you
Great Video, Being disabled, the Octopeak seems to be the best choice for me. Thank You for all that you do!
The Octopeak is an awesome tent. I think you would like it
Disabled hiker/camper here too brother, keep getting out there!!!!
Great discussion on the strengths & weakness of both. I'm more interested in the packable lightweight Optopeak since I plan on hiking quite a way from the car before setting up. Well done & thanks! 👏
I agree! The octopeak is a bit more my style. Just had it out last weekend on an awesome trip.! Thanks for watching Andy! I appreciate it
Like the straight to the point format 👌
Thank you
Justin, thanks for the explanation....you did a great job. Regards from Switzerland
Thank you! I am glad you enjoyed the video and found it useful! Thank you for commenting
Someone's growing! Love both tents but I'd like the Megahorn in summer.
She sure is! The extra room in the Megahorn is nice. And the airflow is top notch! If you don't mind the weight of it, it is an awesome tent
Very nice video. Love my megahorn!!!!
Thank you. It's a pretty awesome tent!
That's a very thorough comparison bro. Well thought out too. Both look like good tents. Really dig that thumbnail too.
Thank you man. You are right. Both of these tents are good tents. Can't really go wrong. But the Octopeak is a bit more suited to my needs. Thank you for letting me know about the thumb. I always feel like I struggle with thumbnails. The feedback is appreciated. Happy Friday Travis. I hope you have a great weekend
@@ItsGoodintheWoods I hear you man them nails are hard. Most the time I forget to even take a picture for the damn thing. I'm terrible with thumbnails and my description is always last minute. They're both supposed to be important but oh well LOL.
Very good show thanks
Thank you Willis!
I was shopping for my second hot tent and these were both considerations. I appreciate the time you put into this one because it helped me tremendously. I am not going to buy either and just stick with my Onetigris smokey hut LOL
Thanks Man
I am glad the video helped you! You just saved a few hundred dollars ! Thanks for watching
Fantastic Video! Went with the Megahorn
Thank you! That is A good tent! I hope you enjoy it
Thxs 4 sharing 🇺🇸
Thanks for watching ! I appreciate it
After a long time I am waiting for your video 👍🏻
I'm back !
Good job!!
Thank you
Your presentation during reviews makes me ponder upping my game! You do an awesome job Justin. If they don't make a decent hammock hot tent by next year, im pulling the trigger on a hot tent and I'll be coming to you for more advice but the Megahorn seems to be the obvious choice!
Thank you Tim! I try to make good videos for your viewing pleasure.
The Megahorn is an awesome tent. If I had to pick just one, it would be the Octopeak though. Feel free to ask all the questions you need. I'll be happy to help as best I can.
I am watching your newest video as I type this.....lol the butt crack killed me hahahahaha
@@ItsGoodintheWoods it was good for me...I've debated a hot tent since about last Octobee but never pulled the trigger.
This cleared up a lot for me and ultimately guided me towards what I want and need for cold weather camping here in Minnesota. I wish more channels were as straight forward, informative and answered the questions I had as this one did. Keep the videos coming!
I am glad you found it useful. What tent did you decide on?
@@ItsGoodintheWoods based on size and price as well as still serving the utilities I need I am definitely leaning towards the octopeak. I was also really considering the rocket XL but after watching a few videos on that one yours dialed in my decision to get a tipi!
@@ethanrakow1454 The Octopeak is a fantastic tent. A palace of a solo tent, yet big enough for 2 and a stove. And lightweight! An excellent choice. If I could only have 1 hot tent of all the hot tents I have, , The Octopeak would be it. It covers a lot of bases.
I have the Rocket XL as well. That is a minimalist shelter to the core. It is a cool shelter, but it is not a good hot tent.
@@ItsGoodintheWoods Thank you so much for the info man! You really helped me make a tough decision, plus tipi's just look so damn cool!
Keep rockin with the videos brother!
This video helps! One should be willing to sacrifice some head space to conserve on pack weight. So for 1 dude a stove and gear. The octo is the answer. Makes it possible to pack and extra tarp for the goatheads.
I agree 100% The octopeak is an awesome solo hot tent. Light weight with some room. Thanks for watching Jeff
I love love love the opening with your boy!! Love the review on the tents, Justin. I don't think I could carry a tent that is 8#. Hell I don't think I could carry a 3# tent haha
These are definitely not ultra light tents. But for what they are, they are pretty light. Good tents
Another great video bro! Yeah I would want two doors over snow skirt too. I really do like two doors. Thanks for sharing and they do look great at night! Cut the website off and stitch another piece of fabric in its place lol.
Thank you man! 2 doors would be sick. They didn't have the 2 door version in stock when I bought this.
I thought about cutting the skirts off. But I wouldn't replace them if I did. Snow skirts are overrated LOL. I decided to sell the tent instead. To me , the Octopeak is much more suited to my needs. I wouldn't use the Megahorn much with the option of the Octopeak. I'm going to put that money toward the gear fund.
@@ItsGoodintheWoods yeah the octopeak seems like it has it all.
Great comparison. I was hoping that the headroom would be higher so I could stand up in the Megahorn. It doesn’t sound like it would be a tent I could stand up in at 6 feet tall.
I'm sure you can rig up the bug mesh at the peak to raise it a little bit. Even so, At 6' you will have to be standing in the very middle of the tent. Those walls close in fast
Great review and comparison Justin, thank you! 👍 They both definitely have their place, however, the height would pose some comfort issues for me, any chance you would have a recommendation for taller users in a similar design? Nice job again, and I agree with Travis at Shasta Valley, great thumbnail man!! 👍👍
Much appreciated. I can't recommend anything taller, because I don't have experience with one. I did make one that was much taller. Much heavier too LOL
As an owner of the Luxe Twinpeak ( big tent) these tents look very interesting also
That twinpeak is pretty cool. I am interested in one of those as well.
I agree, unnecessary advertising is annoying. I could understand a tastefully placed logo & model name somewhere on the unit so that if you were at a campground or with a group of people it could be identified. However, billboard like advertising like what is on the Megahorn is over the top.
It's terrible. Irritating
awesome video.this comparison answered a bunch of questions. Also their website says on EVERY tent, "only one left" 😑, Says it perpetually. I find that a bit misleading.
That is odd.....
Not sure I can go for a summer tent that doesn’t have bug mesh doors, maybe the mesh vent will give enough ventilation but you’ll have let us know how it works on a hot buggy night. Thanks Justin.
You can buy bug mesh inner tents for both of these tents. There are a lot of options. But they take up a lot of space. Add a lot more weigh, reduce peak height. These are winter tents for me.
I’m saying MEGAHORN for the winner!! 🤙🏻👊🏻
A ton of space! A good choice.
Thoroughly in depth and outstanding review man, I've almost bought the megahorn a few times seems really awesome.. you can remove the graphics with a acetone soaked rag and some elbow grease 💪😉 😜 don't know about the waterproofing though!!(=✌💚
I had someone else mention that method for removal as well......I would try it, but I sold the tent LOL. It is a great tent, but the octopeak is a bit more suited to my needs.
Thanks for watching man
@@ItsGoodintheWoods dam wish I bought it 😄✊🔥
@@Canadian_Craftsman LOL you should get one. It's an awesome tent, and honestly for it's size, it's still a light weight tent.
I think you would be quite happy with it
Thank you for posting this. Very informative. I have the octopeak and don’t know what the black straps on the inside of the tent do. They seem to run the length of the floor ?
Those black straps are there for set up purpose. They help you to not over extend the base of the tent when setting it up.
Nice review. I was wondering where your little was. Lol
Thank you sir! I have been making an effort to not be filming our time together. They grow up quick.
@@ItsGoodintheWoods they grow up very quick. They start expressing them selfs at about 12~13 and good luck with that. Lol
@@SeniorHiker77 hahahahahahaha
Awesome video! Did you seam seal your Megahorn on the outside?
I have not seam sealed the Megahorn. The tent comes from the factory with taped seams! No need to seal it.
The seams on the Octopeak need to be sealed
Thanks for watching
Thinking of buying there 3w heater wonder how much import i have to pay extra i still use the polish lavvu for hot tenting got the gstove now it might be the best stove but also way to heavy for hiking
That G stove is awesome. But, like you said , much to heavy for packing. I am not sure how much they get you for import cost
In once/ out once; use how many ways & times?!? Like the diff 'tween price/ value/ quality!
Have you tried the 4 person inner with stove I can't find a video anywhere and I think that's what I'll be going for
I have not.
I've watched this probably 15 times! When is the octopeak review coming? I'm dying for your assessment. I know you've chosen it over the megahorn but i want to know if you've prefer it over the minipeak as well. I'm leaning heavily towards buying the mega for family/ hunting AND the mini xl for solo fun. Just curious if the octopeak really bridges the gap
The review is coming! The Octopeak is an amazing tent....however, It's small for family camping , so If space is more of a concern than weight, get the Megahorn.
In terms of solo fun, I am going to go with the tent that best suits the needs of the adventure at hand. If I am crushing miles, camping in a different spot each night and weight is the concern I am going Minipeak XL every time. It is 1.4 lbs lighter, packs up smaller and sets up twice as fast. The minipeak XL only requires a minimum of 4 stakes to pitch. The Octopeak 8 stakes. doesn't sound like much, but This makes a huge difference in set up times. Especially if you are making your stakes in the field.
However, If I am going on a less adventurous trip, maybe staying in the same place for a few days, if weight isn't that much of an issue, the Octopeak has a TON more room in it, in a situation like that I would use the Octopeak.
If you want the space, are not overly concerned about an extra 1.4 lbs and don't mind the extra time pitching the tent I would absolutely recommend the Octopeak over the MinipeakXL. It just has so much more space. And lets be honest, at 4.3 lbs it's not exactly a heavy hot tent to begin with. It's weight to space ratio is very hard to beat, especially when you factor in the cost. It is a palace for a solo adventure But I would not recommend this tent as a family tent. It's not that big.
I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have anymore questions. I am happy to help as best I can.
@@ItsGoodintheWoods I appreciate the feedback! Just pulled the trigger on megahorn and their 3w stove. I'm excited. Gonna wait a while on the solo tent though. And I'm gonna steal your chair leg hack too! I look forward to more videos from you. Thanks
Great review, just subbed. Have you purchased a stove yet?
I have several stoves. I have one I made, A Seek Outside Large titanium stove and a Pomoly Traveler stove. Thank you for supporting the channel. Have a great weekend
@@ItsGoodintheWoods I'm about to pull the trigger on the Oktopeak (and possibly inner) and stove. Have a great one as well
The bungees can hold up the snoe skirts by hooking to the loops. In fact, thats what I thought it was for. But who knows, the user guide is about as good as their customer service ;-)
I like the tent, but just a few small changes could make it much better.
This was interesting to watch, I had no idea the megahorn was that much bigger! They say 3 with stove in the octopeak and only 2 in the megahorn. 3 may be doable, but one would likely be uncomfortably close to the stove if so.
You didnt touch on the TERRIBLE placement of the stove jacl on the octopeak, right next to the door. Had I known this, I would have not gotten snow skirts and instead gotten the second door. I would have then sewn or glued my own snow skirts on.
I did rig up the skirts with the bungee once, and immediately decided against it. Held upward like that they would collect water and snow. In good weather I suppose it wouldn't matter.
I would not want to share the octopeak with 3. I have had 2 and a stove in the Megahorn. I wouldn't want to do 3 (adults) in that either. I'd much rather be in a solo tent with my own space than share that space w 3. Half the reason for a tent like this is the space.
You are correct about the placement of the stove jack. Not so great. I will be covering this tent in much greater detail in it's own review video at some point.
Awesome comment! Thank you.
Great video I have the megahorn in white it's a great 2 person tent with a stove I would not want to put any more in luxe sell it as shelter you can get more in but you would be melting kit on the stove! at a push I could get my 2 and 7 year old boys in with me with a stove and not feel to cramped over all apart from expecting a bigger tent and the awful sign writing I'm really happy I'm looking at getting the luxe octopeak for back packing to take two people with a small stove I made with you two beds in it looks very small! How many air beds do you think you could safely get in do you think ? I'm thinking maybe 3? I went with the white version to keep the sun out in the morning a bit and the heat in at night i think it helps compared to my onetigris smokey hut but it gets dirty very quick soot and mud! All good fun thank you!
Thank you. The Octopeak is a great tent, but 3 people and a stove is pushing it. 2 people and a stove is just about right. Theres no way you are getting 3 cots in it, with a stove. And it is a palace for 1.
Thank you for the reply I'm looking forward to your review on it ! A lot of videos dont show camping mats rucksacks fire wood and cooking stuff in ! Especially the luxe videos thank you have a good weekend
Not a fan of the web address either tbh.. one of the things put me off the megahorn.. also I've decided for my kit it's mandatory I get myself a flannel shirt I think...
LOL!!! Totally need the flannel.....wool is top notch too!!!
*OctoPeak is a superior build… However, they both fill a different niche. IMHO… Not really a fair comparison..! Truck camping to Backpacking..!*
I agree on both accounts. However, I get a lot of questions about these two tents....A lot of people narrow their choice down to these two tents and want to know which one would be best for them. That is what inspired this video.
Check Better Business Bureau before purchasing from Luxe Hiking Gear.
I have a mega horn, I really don’t like the big white luxe branding either. Looks ridiculous
It really is over the top. I can't stand it
@@ItsGoodintheWoods
Brooks and britches removed his with solvent. But that’s not going to help the waterproofing any.
@@BurtReynoldstash That is good to know. Thank you.
@@ItsGoodintheWoods he mentioned it on a video. Don’t think I’m brave enough to try it on my tent
