  • The Luxe Hiking Gear Megahorn III hot tent. I have had this tent for 6 months. Now that I have had some time with the tent, and have become familiar with the it, it's time for a review. In this video I go over the specs and details of the tent, along with some information about how the tent has performed and held up for me.
    I hope this video can help you decide if this is a tent that will, or will not work for you.
    Thank you,
    Justin

    Ordered the megahorn 8person at the end of January and have gotten the runaround bigtime. Called and emailed a number times with only a return email saying tent is on the way. Lie! No tracking number. Nothing! Im Completely disappointed and will NEVER order anything from them again. Notified PayPal of this and they contacted Luxe and low and behold a ups shipping label was created 2 weeks ago. And nothing more. Status still only shows label created. Has anyone else had this problem with this incompetent company?

    While I love my hexpeak 2 P UL for backcountry hunting. I also have the Megahorn XL 4P - I am Not a fan. Used it two full hunting seasons. The tent stakes first off while light are terrible, they bend extremely easily, short, and they dont hold in the ground. This is not a backpacking tent so dont include UL pegs for a large tent! The set up is slow no matter how many times you do it and if one slight tension or pitch is off you have to redo the whole thing. It also has a large footprint and does not manage wind well at all even if rocked down on edges. I was very concerned of tearing etc. The zippers have caught and misaligned since day one. Eventually it caught and tore part of the flap and this was easy normal zip process not forcing it. Overall I like the small tents Luxe has for hiking pole tents overall the Megahorn XL 4P I recommend one skip it.

    • @ItsGoodintheWoods
      @ItsGoodintheWoods  3 роки тому +1

      Bummer man. I haven't had any of those issues. And I agree 100% about the stakes. I haven't had any problems with them, but they should be bigger for this type of tent.
      I thought it held up pretty well in foul weather. Never had an issue with the zippers either . But I will admit, I like the Octopeak much better. So I sold the Megahorn .

I see that they now make a new damper with the spark arrestor is connected to the rod so you can spin it and dump any build up into the fire box. The damper is a flat plate that you slide in and out like some other brands. They have a few minute You Tube video about it

    The design of this Luxe and their XL teepee tent is excellent. However, the deal breaker for me on Luxe tents, particularly the XL, is threefold. First, the newer XL versions have an 1800mm hydrostatic head --- not even close to being enough waterproof for long downpours and storms.Current common standards are now over 5,000mm. Secondly, just as you pointed out, it's not ripstop fabric. Lastly, the guy-outs are merely thin straps sewn into the seams between wall panels. These stress points should have large triangular reinforced tabs that are triple sewn into area around panel seams as well as across the vertical wall edges. When the wind becomes strong and/or gusty, these guy-outs can be exposed to more force than the ground-stake tie-downs. Without these three features, I don't consider it to be a reliable and truly 4-season tent. But all else seems quite good and well designed. The quality and design of the stuff bag far exceeds all other manufacturers.

      The minipeak XL? I can say that tent will take a pounding. I have had it in gnarly weather and it has never let me down. That said, I am done with luxe hiking gear. They make great tents for the price point, but they have terrible customer service, no warranty to speak of and are ripping a lot of people off. I can no longer stand behind a company that does that. Buyer beware.......
      The Megahorn, is another tent I have had in heavy snow, wind and rain, many times. Never let me down. Those guy outs and stress points do their job. They are capable tents being sold by a con artist it seems. It is too bad

    • @ItsGoodintheWoods
      @ItsGoodintheWoods  3 роки тому

      I actually have both of these tents. I would say it comes down to weight and packability.
      If you are car camping and don't mind the weight, the Megahorn is the way to go. It's a big tent.
      If you will be doing some hiking for a few miles or more, the Octopeak wins hands down. It's a bit smaller, but still a plenty large tent, and weighs about half of what the Megahorn does. It also packs down much smaller.
      The octopeak is plenty large enough for you, a cot, a stove and your dog, with some room to spare. It's a fantastic tent.
      If I could only have 1 of the 2, I would get the Octopeak. The size to weight ratio is incredible for the price.
      I'm currently working on a comparison video of these 2 tents.
