I never would have taken the fear pistol to be a USP, But I think that's because they don't have a separate layer for the view model, meaning the FOV would have a tendency to narrow the end, which is also one of the reasons the animation detail isn't quite on par with the era.. if my understanding is correct, the idea was that the third person model was the first person model entirely, and that solves some issues in multiplayer or something? All in all, I think it comes out better than most even if the automatic weapons are absolutely aggravating in the force burst mode.. Just done a count of feeling like you were actually doing the things better than average at the time.
15:15 Interesting fact this type of rapid change to the enemy on impact was actually done with several weapons in the isometric shooter Crusader No Remorse and its sequel No Regret
FEAR's guns do have some odd model and animation mistakes, but sweet holy Ares, there are VERY few shooters that can match the sheer visceral intensity of its combat. It's one of those games I never uninstall from my PC, because no matter how horrible of a day I have, turning a guy into red paste with the shotgun will always cheer me up.
I was always under the impression that the 10mm Penetrator was meant to be a railgun or gauss gun of sorts, which is why it was able to launch the rods in a straight line at high speeds.

Surprised he didn't mention one of my gripes with the G36-like which is that the animation of the bolt cycling is identical in slow motion and regular speed. So in slow motion it looks like you're firing way more shots than you actually are - see 07:05.

So the way ragdolls work in games, certainly the way they did in early games.. It was always a model replacement with the ragdoll.. The actual NPC model is an animated entity thing depending on what engine.. and it is immediately replaced by the ragdoll, that's the earliest implementation that I can recall so replacing it with a skeleton is just not even a big deal, in fact it might even be easier as you don't have to do such a seamless transition from the NPC to the rag doll. Where it gets more complicated is in things like dark Messiah where you have animation going to rag doll and then going back to the nPC entity again.
The 10mm HV Penetrator put me in mind of the Soviet, Tula Arms, APS (Avtomat Podvodny Spetsialnyy) underwater assault rifle. Especially with that AK style receiver cover. That & the fact that it fires off big spiky boy steel bolts.
@@mememetal6631 The APS was also pretty hot in popular culture about the same time as this game. It's quite a cool system & more people were becoming aware of it.
Don't know why no one suggested, but it would be great if Jonathan take a look on Painkiller franchise arsenal. There are many creative weaponry in those games.
The rocket launcher at the end there reminds me more of the Quad Rocket Launcher from Turok: Dinosaur Hunter. THAT's a series to do. Turok has some of the weirdest guns as a series...the Fusion Cannon, Alien Blaster, Chronoscepter, Cerebral Bore...all of these would be great to see reactions to.
It would've been cool to have included the guns from the expansions as well - the gatling gun, the laser, the lightning arc rifle, and the Nightcrawler SMG. Also would've been interesting to explore the grenades, mines, and sticky bombs.
I dunno if GameSpot ever did a Division 2 Exotics video, but I wanna see Johnathan Ferguson's reaction to those. Some of those guns are just...insane looking.
to date F.E.A.R. Still has the best programmed AI in all of Video Gaming. That AI communicated with other 'nods' (the bots) and would push, flank and lay down suppressive fire depending on the environment. The game is almost 20years old and NO ONE not even AAA Titles have ever been able to do a better AI-Bot
The AI isn't that impressive on its own. But the magic lays in the fact it is done through enclosed environments with few ways of access. The AI has some scripts that will do that make it seem impressive but it is more thanks to the nature of the environment. Still non the less I have only seen similar level of AI action in Wolfenstein the new order where they probably used similar tricks. And the tricks by themselves also impressive.
I think the spike gun could have been intended as a way to defeat soft body armour. It's been a while since I played the games but I remember the enemies having some pretty sci-fi stuff. A spike could be better at piercing through kevlar or D3O style armour than a bullet. Also, it was by far the most fun weapon in the game and that alone 100% justifies its existence for me.
The SPAS-12 in a handful of James Bond games actually has the ability to toggle between pump and semi. Nightfire comes to mind. That would be a great one to cover on this show.
The Roblox game Phantom Forces also has a semi-automatic SPAS included in its arsenal, which has a modification option that lets you operate it in pump-action mode. It's just about the only other game I've seen that lets you do that.
@@Elysium4 I've never really had any interest in Roblox, but since you seem to know it, are there any Roblox games with the Pancor Jackhammer? I absolutely love that thing.
@@SerathDarklands Not as far as I'm aware. Phantom Forces is just about the only game I've ever played for more than a few hours on Roblox, so if it shows up elsewhere on the platform I wouldn't be aware. However, it shows up as a weapon in the first Max Payne game, a DLC for Battlefield 3, and as a mod for the games Left 4 Dead 2 and Ravenfield, both of which are games I've played around with the mods in, with varying degrees of accuracy. It also shows up in a lot more games I haven't yet played as a mod weapon, like Killing Floor 2, Fallout 4, and S.T.A.L.K.E.R., so it makes a home in a lot of weird places.
@@Elysium4 Yeah, I have it in Fallout 4. Whenever I play a game that focuses on guns and has any kind of mod support, the Jackhammer is the first thing I look for. In Fallout 4, you can pretty much main the thing with how common shotgun shells are. The mod is amazing, the sound when it fires is perfect, this booming report that echoes. Slap on the Neverending legendary trait and you're basically a god.
To answer Mr Ferguson's question on the possible shotgun inspirations for the Penetrator gun... I always imagined the Penetrator was based off of the Ivan's Hammer variant of the Baikal IZH81 shotgun. At least aesthetically speaking, since it's still a pump shotgun and not a semi-automatic one.
Great video! Since the Deus Ex franchise sadly seems to be dead these days, I would love it if Jonathan could take a look at the guns from the Deus Ex series!
The 10 mm HV Penetrator is kinda like a modern coilgun, it shoots small metal rods accelerated by a electromagnetic field, They have become quite advanced today and are moving into the range of being lethal up to 20 meters away.
That rocket-launcher felt much more like the previously mentioned 20mm cannon. Something like the Neopup, for instance. Which Tony Neophytou did design back in 1999, so not at all impossible.
Dues Ex Series both the originals and HR/MD. Lots of futuristic and near future weapons tech. Killzone Series. Full of Bullpups and distinct style to Helghast Weaponry with the helical mags
Is it just me who watches Jonathan's analyses of the weapons on Saturday afternoons whilst also listening to Rylan on Radio 2? A niche dual like, I think! :D
About the giant nail gun, consider the momentum of those rounds. If somehow you got them going, they would punch through everything. That’s prob the main reason, they swap some velocity for insane projectile mass.
The real F.E.A.R. was the enemy design (the regular soldiers that got tankier and tankier and dealt more damage in a flash). I only now realised the rocket launcher shoots from the character's eyes. Not just on the 3rd person but from the first person too. Actually I would really love to see Jonathan's take on Metro 2033 guns. That DIY after apocalypse setting was very interesting in terms of how the guns sort of looked familiar and made sense, but were very odd. Unlike in Bethesda Fallouts where somehow everything just felt like a joke. But the original Fallouts were pretty fascinating in their arsenal. Nothing like plasma gun or bozar or gatling laser or mega power fist. Coincidentally, plasma rifle doesn't quite skeletonize things, but makes an ash cloud of their shape. USP also makes me think of Metal Gear Solid. I think it appeared in Metal Gear Solid 2, but Metal Gear Solid was where I fell in love with so many guns. SOCOM with the big block laser sight, FAMAS, PSG-1. They all looked extremely cool and appropriate in that game. No fancy tweaks, just plain operative guns in a sense, even though FAMAS was a very odd choice as I later learned. But it looked so cool in that setting. It also has Nikita remote controlled missile and Stinger rocket launcher, which weren't at all common in games like that. And of course claymore mines that forever made kids think they work completely differently than in real life.
The advantage of 10mm HV Penetrator in the game is that it's supposed to shoot solid steel "stakes" (maybe hardened steel) that cause at least twice as much damage than standard bullet firing guns and are armor penetrating. Later in the game you will be encountering a lot of heavily armored opponents, even robotic enemies, against which this weapon is extremely effective, and while ammo pickups are far less common - mainly comes from those defeated heavy opponents, if you are good aim, once you find it, you can make it your primary weapon for the rest of the game. Don't aks me how it works or the logic behind it, how the projectiles are propelled, since those that end up embedded in the walls appears to bet 3 times thicker than 10mm (though its successor in F.E.A.R.2 - HV Hammerhead is implied to be pneumatic, shoots 14mm depleted uranium spikes and is even bulkier). Nevertheless, it's practically mandatory weapon for high difficulty, and my go to weapon for any encounter, and generally just fun to use. And I wouldn't call it boltgun/bolter inspired, since those 40k weapons actually shoot explosive ammo and tear everything to shreds, not pin things to walls, if it evokes anything for me, it would be Painkiller Stake Gun, minus projectile drop, because this thing has none.
With Warframe: 1999's time travel madness coming out in a couple of months, it would be an awesome time to start checking out their guns. I'm sure DE would be happy to show off what they've created.
It's also a great candidate for "most cursed guns ever." There's not just one disgusting fleshy gun, there's a whole lot of them. Plus most of the non-infested guns are still nonsensical. At least there's no horribly mangled MP5 or sturmgewehr. Johnathan still might want an ESW or two on hand.
@@phoenixmercurous884 Oh, absolutely, especially with 1999 focusing on said disgusting fleshy faction and hopefully bringing new guns. There's Protokol skins as well, which let you have "modern" guns, and might cause some ESW needs

Of all the games i expected you to get him to react too, i never expected FEAR. Great horror action series
I have been waiting for this moment!
The MP-50 does not "distort reality", it is (supposed to be) an airburst effect.
Not using a chance to do the HK slap to point the lack of charging handle on the MP5 is a professional mistake.
Cruelty Squad and so on
It's nice being out the other end of a big release like this. Don't get me wrong I love Space Marine 2 and Jonathan's insights are really fun and interesting, but I am excited to see him react to weird guns again from more niche or older titles!
On that note, I'm STILL waiting to one day see an episode on the old Killzone games because the weapons in those games are really interestingly designed in a lot of cases and I think Jonathan would have a field day with them!
Surprised he didn't mention one of my gripes with the G36-like which is that the animation of the bolt cycling is identical in slow motion and regular speed. So in slow motion it looks like you're firing way more shots than you actually are - see 07:05.
I would love to see the experts react to War Frame!!! I would also love to see Jonathan react to the firearms in the Zombie Army franchise!!!
Please Jonathan Ferguson, the keeper of Firearms & Artillery at the Royal Armouries museum in the UK, deconstruct & analyze the weapons of *METAL GEAR SOLID 3* before the remake comes out.
So many weapons in MGS3 to react and comment on like;-
- The Patriot's infinite ammo and drum magazine resembling an (∞) symbol as well as the tumbling bullets.
- The EZ tranq gun based off a Liberator pistol.
- Snake's customized officer M1911A1 and him whittling the pistol grip to use a knife for CQC.
- Ocelot's dual Single Action Army and his revolver juggling skills.
- The End's custom paratrooper Mosin Nagant with tranquilizer rounds.
- The Davey Crockett recoil-less nuclear launcher.
- Eva's chinese Type 17 mauser clone with her "bandit shooting" technique.
- Tatyana's single shot lipstick pistol.
- Volgin using his electricity to ignite and fire off 7.62mm bullets from his hands.
- The Boss's quick ability to disarm and disassemble Snake's pistols.
These are a few examples and there are so many more other interesting trivias and weapons in MGS3 so please Dave and Jonathan, please consider making a video for MGS3.
I agree, would like to see the comparison for the original ps2 version and the remake😆Lots of good suggestions too. I really wanna see Jonathan's reaction to patriot's inifinity ammo and the 1911 fanboying scene 🤭
They'll definitely do this episode. They're just waiting until close to the remake launch
@@faisalmuhammad6908 yep. jonathaid said multiple times that he is mgs fan
Support thing this
Would love to see an update video for Squad. Since the last video the PLA, Turkish Land Forces, Russian VDV, and update to the Irregular Militia faction. The latest update even added an MP5 along with a bunch of new guns with the new PMC faction.

M134 Minigun - PMC mounted on a light technical
12:07 I can't believe I never noticed that our guy doesn't use the foregrip on the penetrator. It's like he just puts his fingers around it lol. This game was awesome, though. Love it!
Actually shocked, they didn't cover this game sooner!!!❤️
So the way ragdolls work in games, certainly the way they did in early games.. It was always a model replacement with the ragdoll.. The actual NPC model is an animated entity thing depending on what engine.. and it is immediately replaced by the ragdoll, that's the earliest implementation that I can recall so replacing it with a skeleton is just not even a big deal, in fact it might even be easier as you don't have to do such a seamless transition from the NPC to the rag doll.
Where it gets more complicated is in things like dark Messiah where you have animation going to rag doll and then going back to the nPC entity again.
i saw the video title and was waiting for Jonathan's reaction to the mp5 "like" in F.E.A.R. LOL - was not disappointed :D
"Fear is a basic human emotion. But what frightens you more? The evil that you know or the evil that you don't know?" 😱
FINALLY!!! The ASP is based on an early/prototype Tavor, I remember looking it up back then and there were indeed fotos that came pretty close.
Just wanna say I really like this series, thanks for making them!
0:36 i love how in this "Where do you get your tshirts" example, Jonathan is in fact not wearing a tshirt this time
Finally. Thank you. While we're in October, love to see you tackle The Evil Within games.
We needed this. Classic game.
Well this really is a long time coming to see F.E.A.R. being finally on this show
I've been waiting for this for a very long time.Thank you Royal hitman Mr. Feguson :)
15:46, for me it's Unreal and Unreal Tournament with their 6-barreled rotating rocket/grenade launchers that can load and fire all barrels at once.
Same, UT clearly influenced Halo and then FEAR
The 10mm HV Penetrator put me in mind of the Soviet, Tula Arms, APS (Avtomat Podvodny Spetsialnyy) underwater assault rifle. Especially with that AK style receiver cover. That & the fact that it fires off big spiky boy steel bolts.
Now you say it, if you see the picture of a diver hold it while being semi submerged it does give off that siluette.
@@mememetal6631 The APS was also pretty hot in popular culture about the same time as this game. It's quite a cool system & more people were becoming aware of it.
Ohhhhh, thanks for covering the weapons from this game, so much nostalgia, reinstalling for october! 😁👍
Don't know why no one suggested, but it would be great if Jonathan take a look on Painkiller franchise arsenal. There are many creative weaponry in those games.
I like how Jonathan uses his hand to help the camera focus. The mark of a true professional!
I watch a lot of his videos and I really like him. He seems like a really nice and knowledgeable guy 🙂
Finally! 😂
Finally we have Jonathan's reaction to the cursed FEAR MP 5. 😂 Thanks a lot. 👍🏻
Dare I hope that we get episodes with the sequels too?
The rocket launcher at the end there reminds me more of the Quad Rocket Launcher from Turok: Dinosaur Hunter. THAT's a series to do. Turok has some of the weirdest guns as a series...the Fusion Cannon, Alien Blaster, Chronoscepter, Cerebral Bore...all of these would be great to see reactions to.
I love this game so much. I just finished playing through it again last night, and it's still such a great game!
Fiiiinally! I've been waiting for this episode for years now :)
In the theme of 2000s era weapon design, could you review the weapons of Blacklight? I think it would make a good episode, lots of nostalgia ❤
to date F.E.A.R.
Stalker???? The ai in those games despite being old is fairly incredible
Im surprised Johnathan didnt mention the angle the MP5 mag is at... it maes my sin craw when i look at it haha
great vid tho!
Yes! Finally! I think I've been asking for this for years!
Are you going to do the expansion and sequel weapons?
btw on the USP, there are DA only models for the USP, including DA only with no safety lever at all.
I would love to see jonathan review the guns from the heist game Crime Boss: Rockay City
Great video!
Since the Deus Ex franchise sadly seems to be dead these days, I would love it if Jonathan could take a look at the guns from the Deus Ex series!
Evwryone should replay this. Its so clean and smooth. Rabbit reapawn has a video called fear is something and its dope af
I never thought of hearing about F.E.A.R almost 10 years later.
The 10 mm HV Penetrator is kinda like a modern coilgun, it shoots small metal rods accelerated by a electromagnetic field, They have become quite advanced today and are moving into the range of being lethal up to 20 meters away.
Valkyria Chronicles next plz
FEAR's use of sound design was probably its best feature
Guys, do Dead Space. It’s mostly just mining tools repurposed as guns and they’re all great.
Since they're mining tools, there wouldn't be much for a gun guy to comment on
That rocket-launcher felt much more like the previously mentioned 20mm cannon. Something like the Neopup, for instance. Which Tony Neophytou did design back in 1999, so not at all impossible.
The spinning rocketlauncher more so makes me think of Unreal and Unreal tournament.
Rocket launcher with rotating bits = Unreal Tournament. Always.
ESPECIALLY when salvo firing.
i would love to see guns from State of Decay 2 covered because there are so many interesting ones that I've never seen in other games
I remember the SPAS-12 in Black Ops was semi-auto. Slap a suppressor and foregrip on that thing, and it was crazy good.
08:23 - actually ASP rifle is reference to the South African Vektor CR-21🤓
You're correct, I forgot that rifle existed. Only other game I saw it in was the Socom game for the PSP.
Rocket launcher with spinning bits is Unreal Tournament! Remember the one where you can load up to 6 rockets?
Noice, now here’s a real blast from the past. Love these games.
Fun fact (googling dev), same dev company would go on to make Shadow of Mordor.
Its not really a “fun” fact as the devs made FEAR, Blood and Shogo yet are now at the mercy if WB games!
Also the studio behind the Noone Lives Forever titles
I love how he unintentionally noted the little Monolith improvements on an otherwise standard video game shotgun.
I'd love to see Jonathan react to the guns of Darkwatch: Curse Of The West - it's the same age as this (2005), semi-historic, all fantastic
We need more games that have weapons that pin enemies to the wall. I've always loved that.
13:07 - those jumping dudes are seriously in sync.
