For your information, all weapons were modeled using encyclopedias, reference books, and books dedicated to weapons. They literally took pages with pictures, scanned them, and then recreated the weapons in 3D. For everything else, they relied on movies, books, and their own imagination, since they didn't have many actual weapons on hand . Fun fact: they once asked their fans to submit pictures of weapons. There was even a list of weapons they didn’t need.

Fun fact about the EM1 Gauss rifle. In the lore it was abandoned project because they simply couldn't get a reliable/portable power source for the weapon but with the suddent existence of the Zone along with its artifacts the project suddenly came back to life via usage of electric based anomalous artifacts. Extremely skilled gunsmiths in the zone with their artifact knowledge do make hand-crafted versions of it hence why the gun has normal weapon parts of conventionel firearms then suddenly have big blocky scif-fi stuff on the front and middle part of it. if you look at the mag there is 2, one is presumably batteries that gets its voltage amplified by the artifact inside the gun while the other houses the actuall projectile the ''bullets'' so to speak.
edit: another fun fact its the only ''gun'' in the game that has absolutely 0 recoil.

I said come in, don't stand there. You really should play these games Jonathan, they're amazing.
I remember finding the L85 when I played the game for the first time, back when it came out. I'd never seen one of those before, but it looked cool and used a new caliber, so I picked it up. It jammed after the second mag, and ever since then, I only used it when I had absolutely no other choice. Back then I thought it was some balancing choice, since it's practically the first 5.56 gun you find. Only years later did I find out that they just faithfully recreated the original's mechanics, lol.
And that’s not the only anecdote I have about guns in these games. I was playing modded Clear Sky, and I stumbled upon a 10mm 1911 with a funky triangular logo on the grip. Turned out to be a really fun gun, so I planned to read up on the IRL one... A day later, what do I find in my YT subscriptions? A Forgotten Weapons video titled "10mm is the Best Millimeter: the Colt Delta Elite". That's some Zone fuckery right there.

I want to make a small correction here, the LR300 is not a piston gun, its still using the stoner semi-direct impingement, but a modified version of it the designer called the 'Delayed Gas Impingement System' (DIGS). Basically the front of the gas key, which on a regular AR is fairly short and just covers the end of the gas tube, is massively extended and now sleeves over the gas tube and is in turn sleeved by the recoil spring which has been moved to the front instead of the buffer tube, the bolt is cut short and no longer projects into the (deleted) buffer tube when cycling, and the extended gas key never fully separates from the gas tube like a regular AR would. Allegedly the advantages of the design were to maintain better pressure during cycle with shorter barrelled setups (making it more reliable) and allowing a folding stock to be fitted for compactness.

Just some trivia: I've been playing Fallout 3 recently and got the Gauss rifle after the Anchorage DLC, which I never gotten before. It was so similar to Stalker Gauss rifle that it prompted me to do a little research. First time Gauss rifle featured in Fallout games was in 1998 Fallout 2, and the design of that original weapon is quite similar to the one seen throughout Stalker games. It even had a codename "M72", which could've inspired "Item 62". Although different Fallout games implemented various designs, Stalker's Gauss remained virtually untouched since SoC, keeping that slapdash lab prototype look which it was in Stalker universe, in contrast to Fallout Gauss which was factory produced in different countries and thus more refined.

In case anyone wonders why you'd cut off the top of the front sight protector/hood: When you use a low profile red dot sight on the MP5, the dot ends up being projected right on that part of the sight hood. Cutting it off improves the sight picture through red dots, holographic sights and etched reticle optics. This is a universal thing across the entire family of the G3, HK33, MP5 and their derivatives

I also like to see Jonathan react to the guns of Binary Domain, which is a cyberpunk game taking place in 2080 in Japan, and the weapons that the main character squad, the Rust crew, are equipped with are basically futurized version of modern guns. And the robots that you fight also have their own standard issue guns, there's also the underground Resistance, who built their own guns. The game was developed by the same people behind the Yakuza games.
I would also like to see Jonathan take a look at the guns of Vanquish, a 3rd Person Shooter from Platinum Games, the weapons ranged from futuristic assault rifles, shotguns, LMGs and pistols to energy weapons that actually use the main character's suit energy to fire, too bad Vanquish didn't sell well enough to warrant a sequel, which is a huge shame since the ending is quite abrupt.
For an April's Fools special, it would be nice to see Jonathan react to the guns of Plant vs Zombies: Garden Warfare 2, eventhough only the zombie characters carry guns. Or maybe Advance Wars 1 and 2 reboot on the Switch since they 3D models carry guns that can easily made out, perhaps get Fam over at The Tank Museum to do a reaction on them too. *EDIT* Just saw the Forgotten Weapons video on the Groza, where Ian McCollum was literally at Royal Armories using the same Groza Jonathan was, and yes, later iterations of the 9x39 Groza used 9A-91/VSK-94 mags; the curved proprietary mags I mentioned were issued with earlier versions, but the Groza can supposedly use both interchangeably.

3:35 - AN-94 absolutelly has "hyper-bust" in game, unlike other weapons in the game in configuration it has 2 separate values for rate of fire (all the rest of the guns have 1). By default I believe in game they are set very similar, something like 600 and 700 (maybe 800, so the difference is not really noticeable), but that could be modified to represent "hyper-burst", one can set the second rate of fire which only applies to that 2-round burst mode to be something like 1800. So inherently the game is developed with capability to do it.
Also I would note - anyone who ever played S.T.A.L.K.E.R. would have modified gun names, one of the earliest mod to the game was "text-update", especially because English version of the game had all sorts of mistakes in it... and almost nobody plays this game unmodified (except of recent console release), so this sort of "QOL" mod is really first thing everyone does and then weapon names are all correct.
That said probably second mod is texture pack and weapons mods, and that instantly replaces all weapon models to nearly perfectly correct ones and removed the mirroring (which is just weird quirk of games from that period - Counter Strike also had weapons mirrored, I assume it is also for legal reasons).
5:36 - not quite... more like 30 years ago, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is 17 years old game.
