Great analysis/review. I was such a big fan of this game when I was a kid back in 05. The game really doesn't hold up well by today's standards, but it was such a thrill to play back then. Different types of zombies, lovely gruesome violence, interesting gameplay mechanics, the fact that it ties into the Land of the Dead movie, etc. People love to give this game a hard time for looking outdated and being a buggy mess at times, but it's honestly a game I have a lot of respect for. It ain't perfect, but it's a pretty fun ride if you give it a fair chance.
I got the PC version for $5 at Best Buy, and enjoyed it. My brothers got copies and we enjoyed the multiplayer together. I had no idea it was considered a bad game.

In fact there is an earlier game based on Romero´s work: Zombi. It is based on Dawn Of The Dead and came out on 8-bit computers such as the C64 in the mid-80s. There is also an AMIGA-version from 1990.
Indeed, but that's not an official adaptation. Like you say, it's simply heavily inspired by Dawn of the Dead, Land of the Dead is the only official game set within Romero's zombie universe.
The Walking Dead Survival Instinct kinda reminds me of this game. I liked that game even though everyone hated it. I'm a huge Remero fan and since we lost the legend I'm going to pick this up.
I believe that you have to look at this game as a pre -Resi 4 Survival Horror game. When you remove that expectation of a crisp fps, it actually plays okay. I guess as a classic survival horror fan, Ive gotten used to dog crappy controls and not-so-crisp action but some levels of this game really have a nice atmosphere that I personally look for in old horror titles.

Hell yeah it's underrated this game is awesome, it's not too spooky or jumpy but it does keep you on your toes. The glitches are funny, the atmospheres and music are great and the map design is good aswell
The game could have benefited from a slightly bigger budget and a longer development period. But as is, it's pretty decent, even downright scary at times. The cornfield section is straight up creepy and terrifying AF!
The multiplayer community for this game on PC was great. A lot of modded servers with custom maps and weapons like the mall from Dawn of The Dead, ect.
man i really enjoyed the sense of isolation in the game...the fact that your alone during all of it was just awesome man .... the sense that your all alone against the zombie horde and the soundtrack gives a classic horror vibe which i like
Land of the Dead Road to Fiddlers Green was Amazing, in my opinion. I really enjoyed the weapon selection and how difficult this game actually was! Running out of ammo was a must near the beginning, creating a “please don’t touch me or I will freak!” Kind of attitude atmosphere. Land of the Dead and Fatal Frame 2 Crimson Butterfly on Xbox were the 2 scariest games I owned on Xbox. On PS, it was Resident Evil (1,2, Veronica, 3 : Nemisis) and eventually, on PS3, Dead Island. On a different note, Resident Evil 4, 5, and 7 were not the greatest works of CAPCOM in my personal opinion. However, Resident Evil 4’s Merchant option was a really large leap in weapon storage system style. Uruoburos, I can understand was a mutation, more powerful than the Veronica-G Virus, however, the Lickers did not really seem like they fit, due to the Virus strain being of different completions. Either that, or Wesker just like to keep a glass room full of them, and some of them escaped and bred, then that would mean a leak of the virus into the cities of the living. I believe there will be continuation of story progression, however Weskers ability to regenerate Uruboros is Supreme, meaning Lava and Rockets will surly damage him, but I believe Wesker is much more logical than being lured into a trap of lava. I should believe Wesker (a Birkin nightmare look a like) will be infused with metals and control of body shape, composure, due to over-exposure of energy from the heat of the Lava. I would love a game about Wesker (free style gaming) upgrading his abilities and exposure to the different virus strains and the core (storyline) of the project of Umbrella.

I did a playthrough on the game over 6 years ago and I enjoyed it. People still play this game's multiplayer which just astounds me. There's also tons of great conversion mods made for it like Dead Epidemic. Also you can right click with a melee weapon to do a power attack and there's a hidden melee weapon you can acquire at the neighbor's house, the kung fu fists. And inaccurate aiming is a core foundation of survival horror if you think back to the old Resident Evil games where there was no guarantee you would kill or even hit the zombie you were shooting at. Even non survival horror games had inaccurate aiming like Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30 where your aim wasn't always accurate, especially if you were suppressed. Plus, there was a patch made for the PC version by the devs not long after it released that made it more forgiving to get headshots, and made the hitboxes work properly so if you shot a zombie in the head with a shotgun, it wouldn't blow the legs off. Also, in the rooftop sniping mission where you have to cover Otis as he runs to his truck, it ended differently on PC. When he's near his truck, he runs into an alleyway and doesn't even get in his truck. Wonder why they changed it, but it was different.
this game on pc is the way to play it. I tried it first on xbox and was quite optimistic, however it was not as thrilling as I expected. A bit janky and the hit boxes weren't great, the damage felt off. I've tried it again on PC and its genuinely a fun game and quite nice looking. Many games were overlooked between 2000-2009 because of high expectations and high volume of quality titles. This was one of those overlooked titles. Any Romero fan should play this.
The music is actually one of the best parts I always thought and it absolutely adds to the world. Especially in the second sewer section. Creepy as hell.

The gunner section was by far the worst part of this game. Mainly due to the fact that there is no true aim reticle, which causes you to assume where you need to shoot. This led to me losing that level about 10 times in a row over the course of several days because the machine gun is very poorly implemented and doesn’t seem to actually hit the zombies until every fifth shot. I had a lot of fun beating this game though.

If you never got to use it you should definitely go back and try it, totally changes the game and makes the fire axe seem like child’s play. Also, there’s a mod called Dead Epidemic that acts as a stand-alone game/extra campaign with a bunch of changes gameplay/weapon/zombie wise. It’s pretty fun too so give it a shot if you’d like. You never mentioned it in your review, but there were several times in my first playthrough, I'm just about to start the police station level, if you line up a group of walkers just right they will actually smack each other when they try and slap you inflicting damage on each other.
I watched Land of the Dead and Dawn of the dead a lot as a kid and remember seeing the ad every time. I wanted it, but I never saw it anywhere to purchase. When I later fell in love with Desd Island in 2011 it always reminded me of that as if it was an inspiration for them. Dead Island was originally announced in 2006, so maybe 🤷♂️.
The reason why headshots won't 1 shot kill all the time is that you actually have to aim for the brain using a bigger caliber (magnum, sniper, AR) or the axe. Aiming straight to the face will most of the time shoot their jaw, which isn't a one shot kill so you have to stop moving and put the bottom of the cursor in the middle of their head, so the middle of the circle target their forehead. You can be a real killing machine doing this. Didn't play the game in like 10 years but i do remember that, it was really fun actually.
Could be? I mean , in the end I thought it was F-U-N, seems that use to count more for videogames, these days often some of these games that get praised to high hell, sure they are pretty, have high production values, vast worlds and just about everything except the are more a chore to play lol.
I'm starting to become a bit annoyed with reviews in general haha :) I feel like things have turned into a check list. The more stuff you fill up on the check list, the higher the score. Bonus points for a massive world. Unless you are No Man's Sky, you get the small developer penalty.
The animations are pretty crappy but overall, I enjoyed the game but I played it on PC at 1080p/60fps. I have no idea if the XBOX version had the same resolution and frame rate. If it doesn't then yeah, I can agree with the 1 star reviews. But the game gets a 2 stars from me simply because at least the frame rate is playable (on PC) and I'm a sucker for zombie shooters like this.
Although this may be nostalgia goggles talking I personally quite like this game way back in the day when I was younger this was one of the games my parents got me along with my first Xbox on my birthday this was the third game I ever played on the old thing (first being destroy all humans and the second being an fps were you get turned into a cyborg after the first level) and even today I sometimes bring the old thing out to play this game along with the others despite all the flaws
Your observation about the game giving you health boosts at the beginning of a level was curious. There were times when I took a lot of damage in the previous level, only to start the next level at only 50% health or less, wishing I could find those bottles of asprin right away.
This game is my later childhood video game and one of the first game that introduces me to horror FPS. As people said crappy animation and somewhat OK storyline, but the creepy atmosphere is what makes me enjoy playing this game the most as I felt really afraid to be lonely. If you ask me how i rate this game, I'll give 2.5 out of 5 during my childhood but as of right now (I'm mid 20s) I'll give 1.5 out of 5 as my final review. So thanks for review this game it brings back my memory.
Everything hits the top right of the cross hair, so you just kind of have to get a feel for its and adjust it. A minor oversight that sadly causes a major problem. I think a few extra months would have made this game way better.
I thought it was awful and outdated even back when I first played it, straight off the heels of Doom 3 and Resident Evil 4. But over time I've come to find its jankiness and dark humor oddly charming. How can you not love a game where headshots don't work but a poke in the knee causes the head to explode?
I had this game on the original Xbox only problem is it messed up after playing it for about a half hour I took it back try to get another copy they didn't have anymore so I ended up getting Left 4 Dead So hey it wasn't a complete bad day and I still have that for that one and two

it is most definitely a good game, what does it for me is the charm these old games have. the crap-like graphics and the cheesy voice acting (which is okay in this one) and the atmosphere created by the paleozoic 3d engine it's running on. and not to forget that simple yet effective gameplay is what honestly creates a zombie game that works actually pretty well. i hold regards that if dead island was released on the 2008 like it was supposed to, then the game scariness would have been cranked higher.
tbh the critiques were rude I had so much childhood fun with it I mean yeah it was dumb but the multiplayer maps and friends I made on there was amazing people made their own maps along with faster zombies and the people on there were sweet nevver toxic always funny and last man standing was the pure pressure of being the only one alive while everyone watched you yeah the story wasn't great..but the zombies were actually scary i mean for a little kid but also funny to hit with a shovel and the music was decent I miss my childhood and the friends I met on this game

This is what i think for the past few years about this game. It really is underrated and this game has been ditched for a long time. I'm not hoping or anything but well i do have some hope that this game can be remastered in any case (at least for the graphical parts and game mechanics). I love the vibe of this game , the horror-ish vibe especially at the cornfield which i was afraid to get pass them and waited for my courage to come for months, and then i manage to get through 'em. lol. Although the 2005 one had pretty straight forward storyline, i wish (if there is a remake or remaster) the story can be better any many aspects. All and all i like this game despite its' backlashes and cons aspects.
This game is awesome, It never came out in Ireland or the UK for that matter, but i did eventually play it on the PC a d what a buggy mess of game , gameplay and controls are fine but the save system is bugged to the point where u need to chest to get to next levels or skip them. Also its a rare Zombie game set in an ACTUAL CITY

Re7 is pretty decent. You should mentioned Re6 instead. That was a disaster imo

I used to LOVE this game. I actually wouldnt mind playing it again now in my 30s. I LOVE the soundtrack. Simple but scary

This one is 480p (and 4x3) on the Xbox. I wonder if there are any 720p FPS games on the Xbox...

Although this may be nostalgia goggles talking I personally quite like this game way back in the day when I was younger this was one of the games my parents got me along with my first Xbox on my birthday this was the third game I ever played on the old thing (first being destroy all humans and the second being an fps were you get turned into a cyborg after the first level) and even today I sometimes bring the old thing out to play this game along with the others despite all the flaws
It never ceases to amaze me with nearly every review I do, the game was someone's first :) Your comment makes me want to fire it up again :D
I had this on PC and thought it was pretty fun.
Your observation about the game giving you health boosts at the beginning of a level was curious. There were times when I took a lot of damage in the previous level, only to start the next level at only 50% health or less, wishing I could find those bottles of asprin right away.

Had a blast playing it as a kid
This game is my later childhood video game and one of the first game that introduces me to horror FPS. As people said crappy animation and somewhat OK storyline, but the creepy atmosphere is what makes me enjoy playing this game the most as I felt really afraid to be lonely. If you ask me how i rate this game, I'll give 2.5 out of 5 during my childhood but as of right now (I'm mid 20s) I'll give 1.5 out of 5 as my final review. So thanks for review this game it brings back my memory.

Everything hits the top right of the cross hair, so you just kind of have to get a feel for its and adjust it. A minor oversight that sadly causes a major problem. I think a few extra months would have made this game way better.

I thought it was awful and outdated even back when I first played it, straight off the heels of Doom 3 and Resident Evil 4. But over time I've come to find its jankiness and dark humor oddly charming. How can you not love a game where headshots don't work but a poke in the knee causes the head to explode?
I had this game on the original Xbox only problem is it messed up after playing it for about a half hour I took it back try to get another copy they didn't have anymore so I ended up getting Left 4 Dead So hey it wasn't a complete bad day and I still have that for that one and two
5:00 That zombie was like, "you shot me in the face, now shoot me in the ass!" Or he was bout to turn around and retreat, but a made a quick decision and chose to stay and fight because that shot the face was burtal!

I found the game kind of confusing at first. The .22 rifle doesn't do much damage and it isn't obvious how to switch to your fists (up on the D-Pad).
I've always loved the kung fu book you can find in some levels

they partially fixed the AI issue in the PC version and the jaggy movement/loads dont happen.
Land is like a quaint romp through a B movie. Funnily flawed but enjoyable. I always return to it.
Can’t believe City Of The Dead was canceled and it was also going to tie in with Land of the dead

it is most definitely a good game, what does it for me is the charm these old games have. the crap-like graphics and the cheesy voice acting (which is okay in this one) and the atmosphere created by the paleozoic 3d engine it's running on. and not to forget that simple yet effective gameplay is what honestly creates a zombie game that works actually pretty well. i hold regards that if dead island was released on the 2008 like it was supposed to, then the game scariness would have been cranked higher.

tbh the critiques were rude I had so much childhood fun with it I mean yeah it was dumb but the multiplayer maps and friends I made on there was amazing people made their own maps along with faster zombies and the people on there were sweet nevver toxic always funny and last man standing was the pure pressure of being the only one alive while everyone watched you yeah the story wasn't great..but the zombies were actually scary i mean for a little kid but also funny to hit with a shovel and the music was decent I miss my childhood and the friends I met on this game
Honestly, I dislike aim acceleration even on console because before the 7th gen consoles rolled around, they never quite got the acceleration right.

This is what i think for the past few years about this game. It really is underrated and this game has been ditched for a long time. I'm not hoping or anything but well i do have some hope that this game can be remastered in any case (at least for the graphical parts and game mechanics). I love the vibe of this game , the horror-ish vibe especially at the cornfield which i was afraid to get pass them and waited for my courage to come for months, and then i manage to get through 'em. lol. Although the 2005 one had pretty straight forward storyline, i wish (if there is a remake or remaster) the story can be better any many aspects. All and all i like this game despite its' backlashes and cons aspects.

This game is awesome, It never came out in Ireland or the UK for that matter, but i did eventually play it on the PC a d what a buggy mess of game , gameplay and controls are fine but the save system is bugged to the point where u need to chest to get to next levels or skip them. Also its a rare Zombie game set in an ACTUAL CITY
