- Land of the Dead fans love this game for the PC mods and multiplayer, of course Rob isn't going to talk about any of that in his review of it's single player campaign on Xbox. All opinions are our own but the jokes probably aren't. Sweaty Cowch is a (mostly) let's play channel hosted by Rob and Noah; two friends with day jobs and a penchant for gaming together on 1 screen.

God the zombies in this game sounded terrifying
Sfx and foley work are the star of the show.
Definitely remember playing this as a kid, pretty fun from what I remember. A remake or something similar would for sure work really well with today's graphics and mechanics.

I remember picking up both Fear and this game on the same day Land of the dead was on discount so I got with Fear and to be honest I love Land of the dead and I do revisit it now and then when I can.
I remember this game from an old Xbox demo disc my cousin played. The zombies moved so unnaturally and sounded so damn creepy that I was too scared to play it. To this day, I've only ever watched walkthroughs on UA-cam and look at another tab when it plays.
I also appreciated the foley work. I love the detail of the shotgun shell bouncing on the ground when the shotgun cocks. For me, it's the little things that can make or break something.

Very interesting. Civie did a review on this YEARS ago, so seeing it again intrigued me. You bring up some great points on the design and gameplay.
Civvie is gold tier and I was a bit worried about covering a game he did but I felt I had enough different stuff to say. There's still a bunch to talk about regarding multiplayer and mods. I'm pretty sure the person who worked on the Dead Epidemic mod wound up working at Running With Scissors which would circle it back to Civvie again 🙃
I really enjoyed this game. Loved the feeling of solitude.

You mentioned Invasion mode but the infection mode that was modded in was amazing. It had maps based on all the Romero movies, so many good memories for me.
I hope to get that special mode and maps working for a followup video this halloween. Sounds like it'd more fun than the tiny stock maps.
@@SweatyCowch If you look around you can find map packs online. I tried playing last year but servers were dead sadly.

This game for me was like going on a fuck1ng RNG rollcoaster, every so oftend the revolved will shot one-hit kill everything and the other times just waste 5 ammo on a single dude.
It had me wondering if the zombies spawned with different stats that were supposed to match their model. Like if the dudes that took 5 shots should have been the ones wearing swat armor.
@@SweatyCowch as far as i know i read somewhere old review that they guy discovered that some suckers are SCRIPTED to take that many shoots to make the player re-think about fight, and use flee more often as the game was a zombie like survival escenario of the game.

@@Deshenne That makes sense, is devious, fits with movie in regard to people panicking amd missing but feels shitty in a game.
@@SweatyCowch it's a low-budget game whit a forced plot on the zombies to make the player feel stressed and force them to use their heads, it's a shitty thing to do, it's like the ammo cases that have 1 ammo on the evil within.
Ive thought back to this game from when I played it on the original xbox through a OXM game disk where a demo was. Only other review I could find was from Civvie 11, which is how I discovered him.
Do you remember what was in the demo? This game might also be how I found Civvie 11. I was pulling big inspiration from him, Grim Beard, and Ross Scott on this one. I think I fell way short of those dudes but am still happy with how it turned out.
It's a shame that the artist who made the dead epidemic and eternal damnation soundtrack quit and disappeared if anyone has the files to upload the dead epidemic soundtrack on UA-cam that would be awesome cause that soundtrack was heavy as hell
Ive tried several time to find info on who did the music. Pretty sure the songs are loose files in the mod download but I can still upload them.

Also the artist who did the music is Neurological I don't know they're real name but all I know is he made a lot of soundtracks for mods and some fan made remixes like brutal doom and project brutality that's all I know hope this info helps

The kung fu fists are easily the best "weapon" of the entire game, you can even find them in the 3rd or 2nd level of the game, the alternate attack is just the best

Also, the shotgun, for whatever reason, is most effective when aimed center mass. And it somehow will score head shots this way sometimes. 🤷
That is so bizarre. The rules seem different for each weapon. Why can't a headshot be a headshot? 😅
@@SweatyCowch added suspense for the player I guess. Seems to follow the same logic of: shot to the face causes random appendage to fall off. You never know what is going to happen with this zany game! 😝
I distinctly remember only making it about half way through this game before I put the disc back into the plastic sleeve because the bullet collision was so bad. Definitely had potential, but didn't follow through. So bad 😔
You made it farther than I did 17 years ago. I quit on the 3rd stage when you first enter the city. I think I had just played half-life 2 before and was thoroughly unimpressed.
A guilty pleasure. Would buy a remaster.

Heyo! Someone noticed! It seemed appropriate for this being the John Romero "Of the dead" license.
The Kung Fu Book can be found way earlier, namely in the second level at the Neighbours house in the Upper floor bedroom in a closet.
Any idea if I was using the kung fu attacks wrong?
@@SweatyCowch well I actually think the Kung Fu attack pretty powerful with the quick jab and strong attack. It basically an Easter Egg weapon, especially when Jack say "I know Kung Fu!!" probably a reference to Matrix

It's bad, to be honest, as you constantly go through the same levels
When I got to that shooting range, I thought "Oh, maybe it's a minigame, and if I kill enough of the zombies in the range I'll unlock something", but not, nothing, which was some BS. On my second run I tried again using the minigun cheat (actually, I went through almost all of the game with it, and it was fun) and even though I stayed there mowing zombies like it was nobody's business, nothing happened, zombies just kept coming out. Bummer; although, I didn't leave any zombies behind. I never do... 👍😉👍
It turned out to be a trap to get you wasting ammo 😆

Its a fun game for low end computers or if you dont have enough space in the HDD. LOTD: RTFG kinda sucks but it has its charm not gonna lie, specially when using cheats like the minigun one, mowning down zombies with it was so much fun.
I miss the days of scrounging cheat codes from the back of gaming mags while my parents are shopping for groceries.

@@SweatyCowch I remember playing the starting level and being spooked af when I was a kid. I don't remember much beyond that in the story.. I played it in a pc store and the slowness plus the zombies kinda got to me lol.
@@sirderpington7704 I have a memory like that, but I dont recall the game. It was in a store and maybe was a 3DO console. The game was a dark and spooky FPS. I played for only a few seconds when a ghost came outta nowhere and I ran back to my parents.
I still have it and revisit it when I can.
I didn’t have many bullets in the sniper rifle (before reloading) so I had to be carful

Hecks yeah get it. It can be fun when you know what you're expecting. The PC game is available from Internet Archive and My Abandonware and it runs on my windows 10 machine.

The fire ax still has some questionable hit detection at times. Like with the revolver, sometimes a head shot doesn't count as a head shot. I prefer either the kung Fu fists or the lead pipe, two hits no matter what. And I think that is even true with the weaponized zombies since it takes less melee swings to kill them and way more bullets/shells.
I've seen comments on other videos about folks loving the kung fu fists, which has me convinced I was using them wrong.

It’s sucks I never own the og xbox console since I was a PlayStation guy and I didn’t get into Xbox until the Xbox 360 came out but I got it in 2008 3 years later after it’s released and I wish that Microsoft could put this game on GamePass or on xbox store too or have it remake that would be awesome too but that just me though in my opinion and I like the movie too of land of the dead really good zombie movie
