  • Aperitivo is the Italian tradition of having a drink and a nibble to stimulate the appetite ahead of your evening meal. For this video, Jamie's headed to the historic Caffè Platti in Turin, Italy to meet top bartender Giuseppe Gallo and make two classic aperitivo-style cocktails - the Milano-Torino and the Americano. Created in partnership with Bacardi.
    Both cocktails start the same way - with Martini Bitter liqueur, Martini Rosso sweet vermouth and a wedge of orange - but the Americano has a splash of soda water to lighten it and finish it off. After the drinks, the boys talk through how to create the aperitivo experience at home, by finding some local foods and pairing them with your cocktails.
    Try your own aperitivo evening at home and let us know how you get on. Which cocktail did you prefer - the Milano-Torino or the Americano?

    I love these two cocktails - so classy. They remind me so much of when I was on business in Italy last year, having aperitivi in the piazza before heading off to dinner. Personally I'd use campari instead of martini bitter.

    A little tipple tip: vermouth is wine-based and rarely exceeds 16% ABV - as a result it can go off quite soon after opening. Store in the fridge and, if you can obtain one, it's worth using a vacuum-seal wine keeper such as VacuVin to extend its life. Unless of course, you're a big fan of the aperitivo and your bottle doesn't last very long...

      Iain Meldrum It rarely lasts very long in our house.

      Just buy the smaller bottles of vermouth. Vacuume-seal, and keep it in the fridge It'll last a bit longer. Even if it does go bad it's not gonna kill you like bailey's would it'd just make the drink taste a bit off.

      That's an interesting point - there was a test done a few years ago comparing Manhattans made with a freshly-opened bottle of vermouth and one of the same brand that had been sat open and half-empty on a bar for six months. The testers were split on which tasted better - and the theory was that people were so used to the flavour of 'off' vermouth that they thought that's how a Manhattan should taste.
      But yeah it's not as if it's bad for you...

    This throwing thing reminds me what is called the Cuban Roll ^^

    • @DrinksTube
      @DrinksTube  9 років тому

      Stevan Milaš What's that?

    •  9 років тому +1

      The other name of throwing, consisting in pouring the liquid from the tin filled with ice (can also be without) to the other and so on in order to aerate the cocktaill and have a lighter dilution. The higher you pour, the better the aeration

      You will also see this with Sherry (a.k.a. Jerez, Xeres) from the southwest of Spain and Sidra (cider) from the north.

    that's not a Milano-Torino... the original is made with Campari (a bitter from Milano) and Punt e Mes (sweet vermouth from Torino). that's whole point of the name!
    you can also add a splash of soda water.
    another error is that they added the ice afterwards... you need to pour the content onto the ice already in the glass.

  • @PhilSNight
