I thought it was engine oil when it first came out!
Thanks for this tutorial. I’m about to attempt this myself minus the garage lift, super funnel and awesome accent!

Larry Sheran are you serious? Was the tranny fine before and you were just doing maintenance? Sorry to hear that. I had my Tranny fluid and filter changed at 63k miles and I am about just to do a drain and refill as the filter they say is just a screen unlike a true filter on other cars.

I know this is an old video, but people still servicing these cars might find these steps on how to check fluid level useful, as it kind of differs from what was shown in this video. Steps were found online in a blog posting.
    1. The car needs to be absolutely cold
    2. The car needs to be perfectly level on the ground. The entire fluid level check procedure depends on this. Do NOT overlook this.
    3. NEVER have the fill bolt (located top side of transmission) off with the car running! If you start the car with the fill bolt off, it will start puking ATF. I have learned this by staining my garage floor with 3 quarts of ATF which spilled out in a matter of seconds.
    4. Take the drain bolt off ONLY. Do NOT take the stand pipe out.
    5. If tranny fluid drains, let it drain until it stops and proceed to next step
    6. Grab a digital kitchen thermometer or any other means to measure temperature
Digital is best because it offers instant reads
    7. Start the car. With your foot on brake, go R, N,D pausing at least 2 seconds in each and then from D back to N, R and P.
    8. Go back under the car and watch for when ATF starts to run out. Be ready with the thermometer
    9. As soon as you see ATF coming out, take a temperature reading of the ATF (NOT the pan) by letting the ATF run over the thermometer. ATF needs to be between 35*C and 45*C, which is 95-113*F.
    10. If you see ATF coming out that's at that range, you're good to go. Put the drain bolt back on asap.

thanks for the vid. i saw on other forums, they drill 10mm+ hole through the brace to get to the difficult bolt instead of lowering subframe or jacking up engine. not sure that will work for the model you were working on.

Thx for the vid it helped a lot. I removed the front bumper and crusher to get better access to the two troublesome screws as i used stands. I jacked the engine a bit and was able to remove the torx screw that way.
Did you leave the engine idling while topping off atf?

All you had to was take out the bottom mount and top mount bolt and drop the engine down and remove the bolts from the trans pan you do not need to do all that it's very simple. you learn and you good info.

Rick, thanks so much for the video. It helped me tremendously! Do you know how many liters of fluid that you put in? Also the first plug that you removed looked like the differential case with approx. 1 liter draining from it. According to all of the research that I've done, the aisian transmission takes around 4.8 quarts in the pan after a filter change. I'm a little confused about that however, because if I follow the procedure and drain the oil out with the car running, shifting through the gears, fluid temp. at around 46°C, and the car level, it drains out nearly a quart and a half leaving approx. 2.8 quarts in the pan. Royal Purple also indicated that it should hold approx. 4.8 quarts in the pan with just under 2 quarts remaining in the torque converter. With the car level and the pan of course tilted as it is mounted on the transmission, the pan will only hold approx. 2.8 quarts. However if the pan is leveled by the mounting flange, it will hold exactly 4.2 quarts of fluid before spilling over the leveling tube. Do you have any recommendations for this? Any input would be greatly appreciated to achieve the proper fluid level...
    Best Regards,
    Dan (Pennsylvania, USA)

Ok guys LISTEN UP! So I have a Mini Cooper S 2007 that had an oil leak on valve gasket. And the transmission would slip on 3rd and 4th gear and it would jerk really nasty felt like transmission was broke! So I opened the valve and noticed my TIMING CHAIN GUIDE RAIL BROKEN! Reason? Low on oil due to bad valve gasket! So I ordered the GUIDE RAIL for $12 but shipping and handling will be $22 in total. Went to my local auto store (O'Reilly) (AutoZone) and ordered the gasket came in same day! Before replacing GUIDE RAIL I drained all motor oil out and changed filter. And guess what! No more transmission slips and I drove it aggressively! Hope this helps. Just check if your GUIDE RAIL is broken from the TIMING CHAIN. That was my problem and I fixed it all myself dealer would of charged 5k SMH!

    hello
have you performed this on an automatic transmission?
I have 05 mini Auto trans that experiences knock and severe jerks on gears when hot.
When transmission is cold, it shifts normally; Took it to a trans guy and without even checking, he told me I need a new or remanufactured valve body but I want to try 3 drains and fills to see if it clears my symptoms. My mini only has 99,000miles.
    so saad

    • @alfredvalrie5541
      @alfredvalrie5541 7 років тому +1

I bit the bullet this year and had a remanufactured valve body installed. Resetting the adaptations and/or refilling the transmission oil does not work. It's a quick "not fix." The problem is the design of the transmission. Replace the valve body--get your time and money squared away with that if necessary--before the transmission gears become inoperable altogether. I already had had my transmission replaced under the original warranty at 48K miles. The new one started kicking back on me at about 100K. Getting a remanufactured valve body does the trick. Mini/BMW does not do right by its customers. Sorry for all of us.

The vehicle in the video is an automatic and has currently done 159000 miles and still works OK . I work with the guy. If a transmission slams into gear you should get it looked at ASAP otherwise something could break inside. You can try transmission flush .. However i would listen to your transmission guy I respect their knowledge..

I’m trying to diagnose a leak. I changed the CVT fluid a few hundred miles ago. I do t remember what the fluid looks or smells like. I’m leaking a thin oily fluid. I thought it was PS fluid. But my level is not going down. It’s not motor oil because it base almost no smell. I remember the original fluid being dark and smelling like a dead rhino. Any suggestions?

Never, they call it permanent. they give no change recommendations and wont service it at the dealer. you are on your own. This trans is used in VW and they allow for service. I did what these guys did and put in Mobil 1 synthetic at 45 K by doing the trans fluid drop 3 times to more fully change the fluid and all is well for 25 k more so far. Trans works normally.

Rick Chapman hi there, I need help diagnosing my Automatic Transmission on my 2008 R56. I recently got the ATF completely changed after 65,000 miles. After the change I noticed it feels like gears slipping when going from stop to go. (From 0mph to x speed). If the car is already running At consistent street or highway speeds I have no problem. When the vehicle isn’t slipping it feels extremely smooth and silky. It’s only from start to go. How do I know if I have too much atf or need more? Side note: I didn’t feel comfortable after my mechanics job, so I went ahead and drained what I could removing drain plug and overfill plastic tube. When doing so I realized plastic overflow tube is broken, so I have no reference point of when it overflows. Looking forward to your response. Thank you!

Great video. Perhaps easier, there is another method that from 65 Ford on UA-cam to fill your tranny by using an air compressor at a low PSI. Drill two holes in your fill container cap. One for the feed tube, another for an air feed. If you want, you can fill directley from the the right from the tranny fluid container (MUST BE LOW PSI). Feed the fill tube into the tranny and press air gun againd the air feed hole. The air pressure will force the tranny fluid thru the tranny fill tube.

I think you first drained the ENGINE OIL at 5:04! BIG MISTAKE! You did not show the pan and the overflow tube. And when you refilled the transmission fluid by pushing it up from the bottom, how do you know it is filled up at the right level? By overfilling it and let the excess come out thru the overflow tube when you remove your tubing?
This is all wrong. Right procedure is to remove the drain plug with 5mm hex key, then remove the inner overflow tube with 5mm hex key and you refill from top and stop when you see oil dripping thru the drain hole thru the overflow tube. If people follow your procedure, they probably would kill their engine.

I dropped my fluid 3 or 4 times at 45K and added back Mobil 1 synthetic which is working fine still at 75K These asshats at Mini will not service this transmission and call it permanently lubed. I researched this car before buying and did not know about this idiocy. I plan on doing it again by dropping and adding twice. Yes it is a waste of fluid but the only way to remove most and get more new into it.
I have never owned a car that I did not change the fluids. All of the damn fluids. Contaminated fluid kills stuff.

Mice or rat ate my sensoric wire harness right where it comes out near that top auto trans bolt of 55 torx size, August 11, 2017, while parked in my home's garage.Threw code p1229. TPS sensor mismatch. At first I just thought it was a bad TPS sensor. I was freaked out when I saw the wire loom just destroyed. This is turning into an epidemic problem in USA on all kinds of vehicles. Have that problem seen yet? Know what to do? I have been told by my insurance company to just splice the wires back in. I think that might affect the voltages of the sensors it is reading. What do you think?
The insurance people are paying thousands of dollars per car for wiring harness work on all kinds of vehicles here and I think that they are just trying to save money. I am keeping the car. I ordered it new, totally loaded. I want it fixed right. I can insist they have it fixed at the dealer and I am told the dealer will not splice wires for liability reasons. Any ideas on this?
Another idea I am having is the sudden loss of power in the middle of going 75 mph in the rain on the highway, or trying to make a turn across lanes. My death or injury caused by the "spliced in wire loom repair", failing in the middle of driving, going into limp mode, does not make me feel good about that splice repair.
