    My wife's 2009 Mini Cooper, the service interval was 15,000. Suffice to say I did an oil change every 6000 miles. Apparently it is a Peugeot engine and they did not have service intervals that long in their cars fitted with the same engine

      I think these engines came with a lot of flaws from factory… BMW made things worse with extending the intervals

    I’ve gotten quite ocd with my oil changes now George. I change twice a year (when the temperature drops and increases) in winter I use 5w30 FS and in summer I use 10w40 FS I change around every 3k miles or less however this car is driven hard. The 4.6 is x5 gets 5w30 FS 5k intervals 12mths

    Thanks, about to do my first one for my son’s Mini (train him while I do it) and I didn’t know you needed a new washer on the plug every time, is that normal and I just have not done my own oil change in ages to know the difference at this point lol

    By an aftermarket oil pan plug with neodymium magnet. Just a good measure, considering the new engine.

    Just my view, But many years ago I started draining my oil when the engine had been sitting for a week of so using a suction pump via the oil dip stick hole, I can get 1/2 liter more oil out, plus when I fill the oil it stays clean on the dipstick much longer. I don't care how long it takes to drain, I just set the pump and walk away, in my view more dirty oil is taken out and more clean fresh oil is put in. Happy if you Dis-agree 🙂

    • @GeorgeAusters
      @GeorgeAusters  Рік тому

      I think if there is any debris or or sludge though, it may stick to the bottom of the pan as you won’t have the flowing affect like you do when draining it.

      @@GeorgeAusters Fair point. it's one of those things where there are pro's and con's. I will be changing the sump gasket at one point so will see how it looks.
      I just mentioned it as I'm always told people warm the oil up to assist flow rather than making sure the sump is clean from debris as I feel the oil filter keeps the oil clean in the engine. I will do some more research on this, thanks for your comment.

      I just bought an oil extractor for my 2008 Mini. I have some mobility issues this year and I can’t get under the car to drain it. I’m curious about your practice of extracting it cold after sitting for awhile. You feel that extracts the oil better? I am going to use my extractor for the first time and trying to decide whether to warm the car up or just start extracting as it’s been sitting for the last few days.

    • @ianbarnes961
      @ianbarnes961 2 місяці тому

      Depends where you live; there is probably a chart for recommended oil in your handbook, or certainly on the internet. Or ask your oil retailer.
      In the 5W/30 oil spec, the W refers to the winter viscosity.

      Use it all the time on both my Audi (diesel) and wife's Mini (petrol)- as long as it has the necessary ratings and viscosity - no problems at all. Minis would probably like a C3 oil to minimize carbon (direct injection issue) build up.

    • @leiflillandt1488
      @leiflillandt1488 Рік тому

      @@derekgb3780C3 isn't against carbon build up, it's against ash build up in the DPF. That means that the oil have less additives that not "burns" but have been put in the oil to increase the lubrication efficiency. I think one of these additives is zink. Not fully burned carbon is soot, the rest is CO2 and CO.
      If you sometimes want to clean/wash the DPF, you have to know that one detergent with low pH value is for one, and with high pH value for the other. Unfortunately I don't have in my mind which is for which of them.

      @@GeorgeAustersNow in my 2011 X3/F25 30d with 251,000 km I seem to have about 0.5l too much "oil" according to the dipstick after 5,000 km... I think there is at least 0.5 l diesel in the 5W -30 oil.
      I must try to find a level place to make another chec. This time oil temperature was 90°C.
      I know that in some Volvo diesels there was a sticker saying don't fill to the upper mark...
