Two American melodies from Kentucky are widely associated with the lyric Black is the colour of my true love’s hair. The younger melody was composed by Kentuckian John Jacob Niles, collector and performer of Appalachian folk songs, and an important influence on the American Folk revival in the 1950s. In a biography of Niles-I Wonder As I Wander-Professor Ron Pen of the University of Kentucky has observed that Niles created a completely different melody from the versions he had collected in Kentucky in 1916. The melody used for the choral arrangement on this disc is the version sung by Irish singer/songwriter Christy Moore, who learned the song from Scottish folk singer Hamish Imlach in 1968. This modern Scottish song is a rendering of an Appalachian antecedent of Niles’ version collected by Cecil Sharp in Kentucky and published in English Folk Songs from the Southern Appalachians (1917).
No greater instrument than the human voice.
Agreed 110% ! Any mechanical instrument should be an _ACCENT_ to the vocal component of a song. That said, there are SOME tunes that are best as pure instrumentals, Canon in D by Pachelbel comes to mind immediately along with quite a bit of Wagner.
Nam0Bear Howdy what Bear Clan are you in?
Their music sounds like Heaven.
I dunno...the tuba is pretty nice too.
Agreed. We can never create an instrument to rival that created by God Himself.
Now THAT is an Irish Tenor.
whenever i'm piss drunk i end up here and i'm certainly not mad
Know your feeling brother. ditto
My wife is sleeping and I look in awe of her beauty. She is a wonder.
Happy for you. Lovely that you know what you have .
This was heartwarming. 🖤
I sang this in my A cappella group in jr high. That was 1987 and this song is still amazing. I suddenly want to hear Oh, Shenandoah. You all would be amazing at that.
Beautiful in every respect. Y'all could sing the telephone book and leave me weeping . . .
Thank you for pointing this out. So true 🙏
I can’t get over how incredible this wonderful creation of music is. It has brought me to tears. The togetherness, the sense of longing, the choir supporting the solo as though they know his pain, the bass line holding everything in place like glue, the soprano descant. All of it was marvelous.
Heavenly music sung by angelic voices.
This choir is a true gem of Ireland.
I hope to hear them in person one day.
Sláinte!
Surely Ireland is of the Lord…!!!!
Tears brim over the downcast eyes of this old man
'when she and I will be as one' the harmony shakes in the universal sob - for the loss of that one precious life- I hear these flickers of ancient whispers that must have had origin in Irish' Scottish caves and you bring them out into the light. For a second, time stops and beauty hollers out.
What a brilliant choir, hopefully can travel someday to hear a concert of theirs in person.
You won't see the same group of people as they are together for only as long as they are undergraduates. Mark Waters, the soloist here, had been working for the Irish government Dept of Ag for two years when this video was posted.
@@deadsparrow28 Any man working for the boys in Kildare Street is a national hero !
I HAVE AN ADDICTION TO CHORAL SCHOLARS OF UNIVERSITY COLLEGE DUBLIN. I SEE SO MANY FACES OF MY PAST. BEYOND THE SIMILARITIES IN THEIR FACES, I HEAR THE SOUNDS THAT BRINGS HAPPINESS AND FULLFILLMENT...… JUST MAKES ME FEEL GOOD
Ed Greene Say hello to not recognising any faces from your past, with new immigration policies, no one will look like they’re from where you’re from :)
Everyone will be sub-Saharan.
And all this music... will be gone.
Are you just going to stand for that?
These young people are a shining beacon for the best of European culture and spirit
As a Scots-Irish descendant in America, this lifts my soul.
BEAUTIFUL rendition!!
Goosebumps every time I hear this.
Much LOVE, from south Florida, USA. 💚😷💚 (14 April 2020)
Go raibh míle maith agat!
you are not scots-irish. you are 50% cheeseburger grease and 50% saturated fat. go put a mcdonalds out of business fatty!
UCD Choral Scholars have a FANTASTIC version of "The Parting Glass" up on UA-cam, with the same young man as the lead. What an awesome voice, and an outstanding ensemble.
Mo Ghille Mear is great too, same crew!
Theirs is definitely my favourite version, I've heard many but none that are as great as UCD. Love the voice of the lead, and how controlled he sings.
I know , this choir deserves a monetary uplift to the stars.....
What is the name of the male lead singer. Such a great voice as they all do!!
Mark Watters I think.
This is possibly the most beautiful song I’ve ever heard. Goosebumps all over my body and tears in my eyes. Wow.
You just helped me with my anxiety. I suffer from depression and your videos and especially this song with all those many voices, they just made mefeel a lot better. Thank you so much! ❤
I too Anne you're not alone
Hey guys, if this helped try pluck up the courage to join a choir when the world goes back to normalcy. It really helps with depression and anxiety
What a wonderful Christmas surprise so nice to see how some have aged and others joined this magical circle of the human voices. Thank you all!
Best arrangement I have ever heard of this song. Unbelievable what the human voice is capable of. Breathtakingly beautifully performed
*The correct lyrics, as written in the official booklet of the album "‘Invisible Stars - Choral Works from Ireland and Scotland":*
Black is the colour of my true love’s hair,
Her lips are like some roses fair;
She has the sweetest smile, the gentlest hands,
And I love the ground whereon she stands.
I love my love, and well she knows,
I love the ground whereon she goes;
I wish the day soon would come,
When she and I will be as one.
I go to the Clyde and mourn and weep,
But satisfied I never shall be;
I write her a letter with a few short lines,
and suffer death a thousand times.
Black is the colour of my true love’s hair,
Her lips are like some roses fair;
She has the sweetest smile, the gentlest hands,
And I love the ground whereon she stands.
Ive been in ireland for only a week a few months ago. But listening to this moves a specific spot inside me. It reminds me to go back to this wonderful country again soon.
For some reason, “Mo Ghille Mear” popped up on my suggested videos and I’m glad it did. I’ve watched all the videos on your channel and immediately downloaded your album. I only wish I lived in Ireland so that I could see you live.
Art Vandelay - Yes, but can you believe we can actually see and hear such performances whenever we want?
Exactly the same for me!!! In my case I was surprised I didn't get them recommended sooner, as 60% of all my UA-cam views are Irish and Celtic music
@@akkariel8228 me too.
Hello from the United States! You guys sound fantastic, you all have amazing talent, and this makes me excited to see what you do next. There truly is no greater instrument than the human voice. Bravo!
Mark has the best voice ever :-)
Oh my God! The harmony of this group!! 😯 I’ve gotten goosebumps. Superb!!
What a wonderful choir. They sing wonderfully, and convey the stories they sing about with such feeling.
Let me see, so Scottish influence, song of Appalachia, sung by amazing Irish artists. As a Scottish and Irish American, just makes me smile. Many thanks.
this is one of those videos you just keep coming back to, and it’s just as amazing every time
I love the sound of this choir, always looking for more videos from them!
I am not too sure you could get more beauty in one room.

The voice of an Angel
This is now one of my favorite songs. I just connect to it.
Who could possibly dislike this piece? The thumbs down are really beyond me...
One of my fav choirs 😱
Stunning. Beautiful. Congratulations to the choir and the director for another wonderful performance.
So happy to know that in the making of this album, the Appalachian music of the Scottish settlers was not ignored.
Yessssss... I was so happily surprised to see the inclusion of evolved traditions that were carried over from the homeland. 💚💙
More! More! More! absolutely gorgeous
You're in a class of your own. Thank you, each one and, all of you.
The first song what i hear from this choir was Mo Ghille Mear and it was amazing. greetings from germany
God bless Ireland…!!!!
Both the choir and the lead have other worldy voices. Amazing sound
haunting and evocative. Fabulous arrangement of harmonies weaving in and out of each other like a filigree layer of finest gossamer lace.
Such a beautiful song, and so magically rendered. Brought tears to my eyes. Fantastic work!
Stunningly haunting descant ... just beautiful. The same goes for Mark's soulful tenor.
As an American musician and singer I love the ties, musically, between our not-so-distant parts of the world. Our heartbeats are inextricable, one from the other. Christy's version is indeed the mark to hit, emotionally. You all have done quite nicely and thanks for the share!
Angels are singing...
Oh my goodness! Extraordinary tone, control, and pitch!
Just listened to this through a great set of headphones, sublime, really get to hear the men.
This deserves a Grammy
Would love to come to Dublin to see the choir in concert...please post a seasonal schedule.
dont go. as a fellow american, let me tell you that they dont make doors wide enough for our xtra heavy duty mobility scooters, and they do not allow the consumption of mcdonalds in the concert hall. 2/10 experience, would not do it again.
Love ole blue eyes....brilliant performance
Love this! A very beautifully written melody. The melody lines are so pretty from the very 1st note ,it pulled me in!!! I believe I've heard this one a few times at least before & a famous tune? The male lead vocalist did a real good job on this one than the other one I just saw/ watched/ listened previously to this! Well done! All sounds good!
One of my Top 5 Lovesongs ever in a brillant Performance. Greatings from Germany
Incredible arrangement. And so beautifully performed, as always!!
Hauntingly beautiful. What it must be like to be a singer in this song , i would never be the same again.
How can something be this good? Seems unreal
Greetings from house Jessie of house Gaillard, long time fan
This soloist is excellent, such sensibility!
Praise be to God
I got chills…
Y'all are truly amazing singers. Y'all didn't just sing a bunch of words and notes, although that probably would have been faster, but y'all took the time to understand what y'all were singing, and I could hear that. Keep up the good work, Choral Scholars of University College Dublin!
The music that you all produce is heaven to my ears. Brings back the most amazing feelings and emotions ! I hope to view you live one day !!
Holy smokes... that was so good. The singing... oh the singing. Mark Waters was awesome. The camerawork was great. The choreography was superb... it all fit the song so well. I have a favorite video song file and this went in it. I have to listen to more of your group's work. Thank you all so much!
What a beautiful surname you have. :)
@@helenaville5939 Aww thank you!

Wow, this is absolutely brilliant. Great voices, and the solos are outstanding. thank you very much.
I think the other part is called a descant
Beautifully done

Beautiful!
Can't wait!
Wow! Incredible performance as always!!

Welcome back. Amazing as always!
Meraviglioso e commovente.
Hauntingly beautiful!
Exciting!
Wonderful!!!
I love everything they do!
What is somewhat unique about Rewecisu, which means Yellow River in Cymric- also was once called Kentucky, which means "Unguent"- is it has the small Sign Ruis, where Ruis Gort is the Sign of the continent here- a Deception named "America" obscures the land's true Hierarchical Over Sign, Gort, that of Alba or Celtic. This region is Luis, although everyone in the land has the small Sign Duir, Water Elder tree at present.... A moving Pathotism is evoked by the presentation here...
I just happened upon this channel. And then this video. Omg! So so good. This one in particular I love so much... The reverb is so powerful. Thanks for all your hard work to make these videos and share this beautiful music!
Absolutely Brilliant.
Wow! I got chills down my spine! One of the most beautiful interpretations I've listened!
Brilliant. Every time I hear them sing my head buzzes for minutes after.
Magnificent
Stunning. Timeless.
You're incredible.
Greetings and best wishes from Ukrainian Kyiv Polytechnical Institute Choir.
