When I actually got to go to a Pentatonix concert, (which I knew I NEVER WOULD) His voice ACTUALLY deeply shook my entire chair and went through my whole body! I was seven rows behind the pit even!
I feel so bad for Peter. He did such an amazing job in this song, but everyone is gushing over Avi. Avi is an amazing singer and a wonderful, rich bass. But let's not forget Peter can sing tenor and his voice is clean like a bell. They both killed it in this song.
Songovstorms15 The baritone line is written in the bass clef. It's labeled B2 (bass 2) on sheet music. Baritones that can sing the tenor parts do so and call themselves 2nd tenors, like myself.
One of the things that makes Avi so incredible is that he’s got such a smooth sounding voice AND he’s a bass. Usually basses have rougher and bigger voices (which isn’t necessarily bad) but Avi has this sweetness and relaxed sound to him that makes him so great to listen to
Niko Porter YES EXACTLY. I personally don’t like the sound of the regular bass voice, but Avis is so gentle and soothing as well as low and deep. It’s perfect :)
That's partly because a lot of the guys who people think are basses are actually baritones - and it's kinda pushing it for us to get our voices that low so it gets that kind of breathy, growl-esque tone to it (it happens to me and most of the other guys I know who try to go lower than we are technically able to). There's also a darker harsher tone present in the lower range period, so it's just naturally present when guys who have that really low range. I have to assume that Avi is classically trained, because he can hit notes a lot higher than many basses (and that only comes with training and years of practice) and he has learned to smooth out that natural grit that other basses tend to embrace (for example Tim Foust legit sounds like a cross between thunder and a wolf's growl).
Jo Wolf Avi is classically trained and also majored in opera in college. I think one thing that helps him have such smooth, relaxed low notes is the fact his talking voice is very low as well, so the notes are comfortable
This song is basically a hot shower for the soul. Coffee in the early morning. Clean sheets for mid-summer nap. These two singing this song is the epitome of soothing.
My duet with Avi Kaplan from Pentatonix is finally up! - Please give this a listen and share it with your friends and family! :-) All sounds made by the human voice. ---> Black Is The Color Of My True Love's Hair - Peter Hollens & Avi Kaplan
I think that Geoff Castellucci would be a bit better suited for that. His speaking voice is lower and more intimidating, but he has the low smoothness that Avi has.
I think a solo album may well be on the way perhaps this year... He's hinted at it a few times on twitter... I love to hear him sing in PTX, but likewise, would appreciate a solo/collaborative album from Avi. In the words of the Wicked Witch, "I'm melting..." [but in a good way ;o)]

Hi Peter, I don't know if you'll ever see this comment, but I just want to say that this cover has changed my life. Ever since I moved from my home of 12 years, I've felt empty and out of place. Every time I listen to this, I feel secure. This is my go to song if I'm ever having a bad day or even just wanting to listen to the beautiful harmonies. Thank you for everything you do and thank you Avi for joining Peter.
I've never heard a bass voice sound so amazing. Avi's voice literally sounds like a bow being pulled across a double bass' strings. So much body and resonance.
@@leaarinwarkentine I’m not sure why I used that particular wording. So many months ago. Thranduil Oropherion He hits a low Db in Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, and it's absolutely beautiful. At the last note of this song, however, is a 4th below that. An amazing Ab. It's very hard to hear, but with headphones you can make it the growling that the note produces. Maybe with better headphones I'd be able to hear it more clearly..lol
Waldgeist And 4:01 I'm just finished. I think it's because this piece is originally a lovely Irish celtic piece (at least from what I know of it). Somehow, simple harmonies just work so well. :)
Avi's deep voice influenced how I sing. I tried to copy his voice during the video the first time I watched and I realized I sang A LOT better with a deep voice.
i started out as a baritone with no way to get deep.... but my deeper voice sounds way better and feels more comfertable than my higher voice, so ive been training... LITERALLY TRAINING every day for like 1-2 hours to get deeper, so far ive made progress, i went from being able to hit a F with like total ease and have to work to get lower, Then down to a G and now i am able to go down to a E with ease. but still training... and when i say training, im talking like rocky style training lol.
ive also hurt myself trying to train many times lol, from my voice, to my throat, to my chest itself. or even my vocal chords or lymph nodes.... but if my lymph nodes hurt, then thats a good thing, it means im making progress.
your lypmh nodes have nothing to do with your voice. It's all about the thickness of your vocal cords and the amount of a particular type of testosterone that is released during puberty from your testes. That's why boys with good soprano ranges were castrated during the renaissance, to keep their voice from dropping in range. Training can help with lubrication to somewhat expand your range and in particular shorten the gap between head voice and chest voice, but unless you are naturally at least a second baratone, getting truly into the bass range is going to be extremely difficult.
Jorie Von Ohlen well ive also been sick so that might be why my lymph nodes hurt lol, but ive been doing SO much practice (from military push ups to strength my chest and neck) to humming meditation, each night for an hour or 2, because....well. when it comes to choral things, i love the bass the most of all, like i have nothing against tenors/sopranos, or any of that, but i just love the bass.
Wow Peter Hollens & Avi Kaplan together what harmony! I miss Avi Kaplan in Pentatonix but he's doing absolutely wonderful as a solo singer. And to have Avi & Peter together in perfect harmony is heavenly. Thank you gentlemen for giving us such a beautiful sound.
The precision in Avi's voice is one to admire. Every vibrato, every riff... Speechless. His tone as well... Huge inspiration. EDIT: Done talking about the bass (Avi speaks for himself), Peter is my favorite tenor in the community. Best version of this song on the internet indeed, and my favorite acapella cover of all time. I've listened to this for at least 30 hours cumulatively, no exaggeration. Great job.
Peter Hollens and Avi Kaplan this makes me very very happy. Went to a PTX concert and his voice shook my soul. Love this duet. Definitely need more duets
I love these two voices together. Both have such great range, both are smooth and clean, and both have such awesome control, not to mention the fantastic blending. At LEAST 11/10.
At the time, I had seen this video the first time when I was a teenager. I had my tablet, the dog next to me, and everything was so good. Now my mother has been dead for a year, I’m working, but I’m having a hard time smiling. My friends have all gone their way. When I see this video, it’s a lot of happiness that comes back all at once. Thank you

True plus in misty mountains the regular version by peter he hit some very low bass notes
I think it's mainly cause the last time he worked with a tenor (pentatonix) Avi was more underated lol
I love when Avi goes from really high pitch, to the lowest point, that voice range
I love that Avi has two different ponytails going on
Emelia Kate thx, thought i was the only one who noticed! Now i‘m glad someone else did as well 🙈

Welp, time to dye my hair black.
im with you
Unnötig TV Lol!
bro same!!
me too lmao
Grace Bales Peter wishes he was as good looking as Avi
I upgraded my sound system and had to come back to hear this!
I showed this to my mom today and she absolutely loved it. Her eyes got so wide when Avi sang. She also thought Peter you were amazing
Damn ... Avi has such a deep voice.
You should hear his note he hits in Dance of The Sugar Plum Fairies off of PTX's Christmas album
Thranduil Oropherion
I shall try to find it and listen ot it, Your Highness.
Thranduil Oropherion
He hits a low Db in Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, and it's absolutely beautiful. At the last note of this song, however, is a 4th below that. An amazing Ab. It's very hard to hear, but with headphones you can make it the growling that the note produces. Maybe with better headphones I'd be able to hear it more clearly..lol
Peter Hollens, I love you to death for this!!
I keep coming back to hear Avi
I've been repeatedly returning to this song for the past eight years. Mesmerising. Chills every single time at 2:28
3:37 the perfect moment, love the harmonic play. Instant chills :D
I adore that part too! Thanks Waldgeist
***** It sounds like from a medival chant, or choral.
Waldgeist And 4:01 I'm just finished.
I think it's because this piece is originally a lovely Irish celtic piece (at least from what I know of it). Somehow, simple harmonies just work so well. :)
i love how the soft voice of Peter and the voice of Avi are SO GOOD together
One. Of. My. Absolute. Favourite. Songs.
LIVIN' FOR THIS VERSION
Avi's deep voice influenced how I sing. I tried to copy his voice during the video the first time I watched and I realized I sang A LOT better with a deep voice.
Does not mean I am a good singer now though. :(
i started out as a baritone with no way to get deep.... but my deeper voice sounds way better and feels more comfertable than my higher voice, so ive been training...
Shivers up my spine. Kaplan is so AWESOME :D
They both have fantastic tones and phenomenal ranges, I'm just astonished at how gorgeous their **blend** is! That's tough to do!
My ears have been blessed
4:04 I forgot how to breathe. Avi and Peter are so perfect.
Black Curly hair... Don't think there is a better thing in the world, really.
Until I heard this song, that is.
Phenomenal!!!!
Two of my favourite singers in one video. My life is complete.
Great job.
Who else cried when they first heard this song? This is so beautiful. I am in love with Avi Kaplan!!
There is not a superlative, yet unsaid, that can adequately honor the sounds of these two men. Bravo!!!
I love Peter's voice! I think I could listen all day to him sing! And together, Peter and Avi...I could never get tired of that sound!
I love how Avi changed his hair for his different parts, that's attention to detail
Peter Hollens and Avi Kaplan this makes me very very happy. Went to a PTX concert and his voice shook my soul. Love this duet. Definitely need more duets
Avi! My love!
when two legends cooperate this is the result. this video gave me chills
I love these two voices together. Both have such great range, both are smooth and clean, and both have such awesome control, not to mention the fantastic blending. At LEAST 11/10.
Could there be a sexier, more gorgeous, goosebump-inducing Baritone/Bass duet ever?
Probably not,
At the time, I had seen this video the first time when I was a teenager. I had my tablet, the dog next to me, and everything was so good.
Now my mother has been dead for a year, I’m working, but I’m having a hard time smiling. My friends have all gone their way. When I see this video, it’s a lot of happiness that comes back all at once. Thank you
This was like a deep-tissue massage for my soul. Thank you so much for putting this into the world, Peter and Avi!
I'm so thrilled to hear that our version of this song resonated with you and provided some soulful relaxation. This means a lot to me and Avi! 😍
OMG. How perfect is this? Two beautiful voices. Perfectly offsetting each other! Wow. Thank you.
Like a dream!!! Your voices are Heavenly!!!! Avi's low register, together with Peter's soothing notes, is pure bliss!!!!
Two incredible singers, one amazing tenor, and an incredible bass.
