I like this performance, but I also like the audience. They know when something special is happening, and they know how to let the quietness resonate. Seems like that is pretty rare these days.

Thank you for posting this song...I'm in tears.
1969 is after the rise of the Civil rights movement... Any white man that wouldn't do that at this point in time is a very public racist in a world where it is no longer an openly defensible thing.
She's a performer who was invited to play at the venue, of course there will either be venue staff or a technician of some sort around to set up the equipment for them, regardless if who the musician is. Nobody would have come to set up the chair if it was some nobody artist at a random open mic or something, regardless of who the musician is.
Her melody that starts 4:00 until the end with the guitarist isn’t on any recorded version of this song is so beautiful and jaw dropping, another piece of proof that Nina Simone was a Classical Pianist and a Composer. Every song she made it her own as well as adding flares from every classical era of music.
Actually it's on the record black gold, I have it. The song is split in 2 section on the song listing on the back of the record , a1 by Nina et a2 by latimer.
Being a grand pianist was her dream. But the almost insurmountable racism and segregation of that time kept her out of Julliard(?). Her anger and bitterness informed her singing and her whole life, eventually. Towards the end of her life, that's all she talked about. Tina Turner remained bitter about not gaining the popularity of Madonna back in their day.
@@paulinewalker1221 nothing to do with ireland. it,s an american rework of a scottish ballad. introduced to ireland by christy moore who learned it from scottish folk singer hamish imlach.
ISN'T SHE BEAUTIFUL ! The setting - Nina Simone's Hair, her skin tone, the perfect makeup that brings out her Perfect... facial features, her outfit, the piano, NINA's graceful, elegant manner as she performs, the bare lighting...the still silence .. Is AN AWESOME piece of Artwork. Then ... Emile Latimer delicately, delicately ... frames it.
This is the song that began Nina's performance i saw at the Beacon Theater in NYC in 2000. From her first note i shattered into a million goose bumps and tear began streaming down my face. I turned and looked at others in the audience, not a dry cheek, as we shared the same pain and exultation. A thunderous standing ovation followed every song.
I saw her in Central Park, live about 50 years ago. Her venues were almost always affordable. Because, I believe, she never attained the stardom of someone like Lena Horne. But that hadn't been her dream.
Such fearlessness, such fear, such vulnerabilty, such strength, such meaness, such generosity, such musicality, such soul. No one to compare with the great Nina Simone, any one could only be a reflection, Thankyou for your time here on earth, and allowing your light to burn so bright, so fierce
she was always ahead of everybody else. her style, her melodies, the singing! everything is so unique and fascinating, so fresh, so powerful. people nowadays cannot even produce music like this anymore. shivers.... just shivers! Nina Simone - you are a true diamond!
ohh my God! Nina was a GODESS! i can't even put in to word what her songs do to my soul when she sang. I am going to Paris and the one of the first things i am doing go put a rose on her grave to thank her to opening my heart to real music, passion and heartbreak.
I just love how she plays the piano so beautifully and effortlessly. Her whole essence is divine. I love Nina simone and wish i could mimic her divine gift

was reading the comments, kinda unsure why people were freaking out so much about her- then she started singing, and my entire body erupted in goosebumps.
She had a really hard life but I think that's the reason she could put so much emotion in a song. I never found someone who can stand comparison with her.
Hard life.. I guess that is relative. I think she grew up in a pretty stable home. Two parents..Parents weren't poor and destitute...they supported her playing. I think she was very in touch with what was going on in the world and expressed it through her playing the piano. She wanted to study and play classical...but I doubt there were many prestigious (white) schools that wanted to admit her. I think she was so proud of her heritage and hated that people couldn't see how racism is stupid as f*ck. Like ..RESPECT ME. I am playing some good stuff. I am black.I am a woman. I am proud. I am great.
Yeah, You're right. But it isn't just about the environment and the condition she grew up in. She had many mental health problems like a bipolar disorder and was later in a unhealthy relationship with her husband who forced her to become famous. And you can have a hard life even if things are going well. I think that Singers and all kinds of artists with mental illnesses are superior in expressing feelings. For example Van Gogh, Munch or singers like Amy Winehouse and Nina Simone.
Tchasa don't forget Janis Joplin she had quite a bad childhood a disappointment to her parents bullied so bad worse than you'd think at school and never being loved she put so much emotion into her songs both her and Nina do a great rendition of little girl blue
Listen to how subtly she adds those notes to the guitar piece at the end... Such humility doesn't exist in today's music; the artists' egos don't allow for them to be anything but selfish

This is wonderful rendition of the original Scottish folk song of the same name. Nina Simone's voice and piano playing are amazing and give this great song such a different and wonderful feel.
I listen to this often. It is ancient. It is resonant today and tomorrow, I am certain. I sing it to myself in quiet moments. (It is within my Limited tenor range.) I love that she shares it with the young man and it reflects back to include her.
WOW! I haven't listened to (heard) Nina's extraordinary and unique expression of music since I was a child! Awesome performance. My sister used to play her all the time and I would just drift into another realm of enjoyment.
Only a couple of words were changed- it's predominantly the original Scottish lyrics barring the few references to Scotland missing. The tune is the same too- although she has clearly taken her own exceptional spin on it.

This is pure art. And something extra, a white man lifting her piano chair, in 1969. Best video ever.
I would have gladly adjusted her chair... Would have relished the opportunity, absolutely, Nina has a soul of gold!

This is wonderful rendition of the original Scottish folk song of the same name. Nina Simone's voice and piano playing are amazing and give this great song such a different and wonderful feel.
Nina is the music and her songs are the truth
The Lady who Showed me that Passion and Deep Feeling are MORE Than a Legitimate Expression. So Love you Nina, Bless YOU....xxxx
I listen to this often. It is ancient. It is resonant today and tomorrow, I am certain. I sing it to myself in quiet moments. (It is within my
Limited tenor range.) I love that she shares it with the young man and it reflects back to include her.

Speechless!
Amo tudo de madame Simone!!!!!!
WOW! I haven't listened to (heard) Nina's extraordinary and unique expression of music since I was a child! Awesome performance. My sister used to play her all the time and I would just drift into another realm of enjoyment.
Wow! Beautiful! I love how they keep the haunting quality of this beautiful Scottish folk song.
This is a wonderful wonderful version but it is a Scottish song- the words have been changed here
Ian Buchanan If the words have been changed in America it is an American song. Song= lyrics + music. Perhaps it is a Scottish melody?
Only a couple of words were changed- it's predominantly the original Scottish lyrics barring the few references to Scotland missing. The tune is the same too- although she has clearly taken her own exceptional spin on it.
Nonetheless, I love the haunting quality of this song no matter which side of the great pond it is sung.
Absolutely- she makes it her own and I think it has a different significance- a different meaning/intent the way she has sung it
So beautiful.
Black is her body, so firm, so bold
Black is her beauty, her soul of gold
I carry my love in my heart
Every... everywhere
And no matter where I go
She is always there
I remember how she came to me
In a vision of my mind
I remember how she said to me:
"Don't ever look behind"
She said: "Look ahead", and I would see
Someone always loving me...
Her picture is painted in my memory
Without a color of despair
And no matter where I go
She is always there
