Such a beautiful song. We had it played at our mother's funeral. For us the perfect way to say good bye softly and kindly.
UA-cam PLEASE for the love of all things sacred, take the ads off the middle and end of this video! Some of us actually use it as a lullaby to get to sleep, and nobody likes being jarred awake by the sudden loud jammin tune of a promo for FB messenger! Thanks! 🙃
UA-camrs PLEASE get an adblock and stop complaining. You are like people who just walk across the street getting hit by cars and complaining "ban cars!" instead of looking around for crossings. Adblockers are those zebra crossings, install them, end of conversation!
@@gaiaakatheearth5604 you need to stop being an a$$ and copping an attitude!
They don’t need to have ads in the middle of a song. That’s not nice!
Pretty sure it's the choice of the channel whether to allow ads during the video or only at the beginning/end. You could always buy the album and support the singers....
@@bethmcmullan9872
If I wasn't broke I would consider it. But yeah, there's no need for ads at the end or in the middle. Plenty of white noise vids on here that are 10 hrs and only have ads at the beginning.
Haven't sung this song in decades--not since my boys were wee. A lovely reminder, although I doubt that the full choir would have put them to sleep :)
LYRICS
Sleep, O babe, for the red bee hums
The silent twilight's fall
Aoibheall (1) from the Grey Rock comes
To wrap the world in thrall.
A leanbhan O (2), my child, my joy,
My love and heart's desire,
The crickets sing you lullaby
Beside the dying fire.
Dusk is drawn, and the Green Man's Thorn (3)
Is wreathed in rings of fog:
Siabhra (4) sails his boat till morn
Upon the Starry Bog.
A leanbhan O, the paly moon
Hath brimmed her cusp in dew,
And weeps to hear the sad sleep-tune
I sing, O love, to you.
Faintly sweet doth the chapel bell
Ring o'er the valley dim:
Tearmann's (5) peasant-voices swell
In fragrant evening hymn.
A leanbhan O, the low bell rings
My little lamb to rest
And angel-dreams, till morning sings
Its music in your breast.
(Chorus)
____________
Notes
(1) Aoibheall is the queen of the northern fairies.
(2) Leanbhan means "little child".
(3) The Green Man - "They say if you see him in the morning, 'no ill follows'; but if at night, death or some other terrible misfortune will surely overtake you." -from "Songs of Uladh"
(4) Siabhra - Generic name for any type of Irish fairy.
(5) Tearmann is the village of "Termon" near Gartan in Donegal.
Thank you
Mile buiochais. 1000 thanks. My 'phone is not yet multilingual!
grMma!!!
Listening to this at 12:30am after a very long day of online work. I'm going to fall asleep very quickly and have peaceful dreams tonight. Thank you sweet angels. ❤️
For me, the mark of a great song is its ability to both buoy your spirit with pure crystalline joy and thump you with melancholy so deeply that erratic breaths are a precursor to tears. This is wonderful music.
When I was little my mom used to bring me to choir practice. I learned how hard a choir works at rehearsal and how much care is put into a piece like this. This group obviously has worked very hard on their performance and it definitely shows.
Amazing everyone here is amazing. The soloist omg her voice filled the whole room every crack and crevice.
What an amazingly beautiful song sung by what sounds like angels here on this earth.
* the song came on a portable radio I was channel surfing on while sitting in a storm shelter awaiting severe weather.
The song was so beautiful that it put tears in my eyes & gave me a peaceful feeling.
These young people are so extremely talented....as is their director, of course! Their sound is ethereal.
His arrangements are also sublime which makes these singers shine like bright lights.
This is a brilliant group of vocalists, but Hazel Conway's voice in her solo makes the hairs on my arms and neck stand on end -purity, clarity and strength.
Beautiful! What a talented singing group - this and your videos on UA-cam performing "The Parting Glass" and "Black is the Color of My True Love's Hair" are on my favorites list! It's great that students there are keeping these great old songs alive for the new generation!
If you don't love this choir and Irish music you have no soul. This stuff is all perfection.
Transported me to a magical place where my joy chills were found. Thank you.
I felt the same. Let's invent time machine!

I'm absolutely in love with this choir, you all do a fabulous job! Kudos from the US!!
Yep, wish them to keep that deep joy of collective singing
As another American I second this! Fantastic job! Your music soothes the soul.
I think also the same.
This is so beautiful that I want to listen to it nonstop instead of sleeping.
UCD Choral Scholars Rock. What a delight.
From an American; as a non-person in your art; it, your work, is Heavenly !! From my observation, naive, I heard: you, as, clouds over earth; blown by breeze - between selves; with souls, exchanging conversation with harp; meriting sincere praise !! Bravo !!
Well done ...a bit better than we were in the mid 1960s!.....but I suppose we were part of the foundation..great to hear it so good. Gaudeamus igitur ad astra!
Beautiful as always. You guys need to do more songs in Gaelic, Mo Ghille Mear was absolutely amazing.
I second that statement!!
i´m from argentina but completly love with all celtic irish gaelilge culture, even i went to the beautiful green island and also here at patagonia, the lenguage is very conserved with the comunity. loveeee young people in ireland conserving it ! - ERIN GO BRAGH
Yes it is!
I second this. More Gaelic songs! So beautiful! Miceal O'hUigen
Yeah, that 'Mo Ghille Mear' is outstanding. When I listen to that, I feel as if I'm visiting ancient times. We need to invent a time machine soon.

Me great granny would softly sing a verse of this (or something quite similar) on rare occasion, tho hardly so beautifully!
Spent a week in choir camp with the soloist. My favorite memory of that time is when 4 of us snuck off to a corner of the ancient church we were rehearsing in. We sang songs to each other from our home nations and she introduced me to The Parting Glass. Pure magic.
What a treat and a great memory.
Harp solo for the win! This choir is fantastic!!!
I cried so hard, thank you for all you do as a choir. You're a true gift to the world!
On my fifth time listening to this gift from heaven. Thank you for the peace you give.
Wonderful talented voices God has blessed us with. A joy to hear.
Everything you people do, and the way you do it, is amazing.
I would be listening for UCD choir for hours. Hazel your voice is pure jewel. Grettings form France
What a lovely video from my lovely Ireland. Beautifully sung and played!

Glorious, haunting, fabulous choral work. Only hearing them for the first time. Look forward to many, many more heavenly performances. Mile buiochas diobh uilig. Eugene Quinn, now in Western Australia.
This makes me feel like I'm in heaven. A momentary escape from the serious world.

A gorgeous song; beautifully sung. Thank you.
Y'all are so beautiful it hurts, the music and the fact that you have been called to it is just utterly, painfully beautiful.
Fabulous, on every level.
Thank you for the amazing song. The singers were outstanding.
I remember this from the Irishmen singing it in Lonesome Dove....love it in this setting
Simply magnificent. Thank you!
Absolutely gorgeous. The animation in the video is a very, very nice touch.

Thank You For This Beautiful Gift Of Music🎵
Beautiful... I love it! Greetings from Poland

Love your productions!

The silent twilights fall
Aoibheal from the grey rock comes
To wrap the world in thrall
A lyan van o my child my joy
My love and heart's desire

Simply Magic
Somewhere from so deep inside, through I've never heard this before, I know this song. Somehow, somewhere, someone sang this to me. As she held me in her arms. I swear it's so.
Perhaps it's genetic deja vu..
Most likely just the Guinness bubbling back up LOL
great video as well as singing and music
