7 Wood vs. 5 Wood vs. Hywood vs. 4 Hybrid

- Today I look at the longer approach clubs in my bag. I intend to determine what clubs will stay in the bag. The clubs I test are 3 wood, 5wood, 7 wood, Hywood, and my 4 Hybrid. I plan on keeping 3 of the 5 in my bag. We test these clubs outdoors and Indoors for carry, launch, spin, and descent angle.

I know we’re all different, but I ditched my hybrids and have a 3 and 5 wood, then my irons 5-PW, 50 deg, 56 deg. I’ve just never felt comfortable hitting hybrids.
Great stuff!
Thank you so much! Everyone has to find out what works for them. Thank you!
Great to see the Hy Wood getting some love. I bought one and after the first range session bought one for my dad. Easiest club to hit, great distance and forgiveness as well. Great video.
Thank you so much Craig!
Great video. Thanks! Exactly the kind of thing most of us have to think about with realistic carries for an amateur.
Thank you so much!
Mistah Short Hitter?
I saw only consistent launches!
What a great video! Showing real life comparisons that we all face deciding which clubs to put in our bag. Then to hit the clubs and real life but also inside to get that comparison. As simple as it seems, I don't think I've ever seen anybody do that on a UA-cam video. Thank you very much sir!
Sorry it took me a year to find you but I liked and subscribed. Appreciate your video!
Brent
I was carrying driver 195 yesterday so I guess that's around average for male golfers. It's definitely short for a low handicap golfer. Thank you so much for watching and subscribing!
Thanks for showing your evaluation process. I’ll be performing similar process. I’m gathering as the season progresses there’s a chance that depending on course or how you’ve been hitting them, there could be some exchanges in the bag. I find every once in a while a club needs a “timeout”.😂
@@keithp5568 You got it!
I only hit the 3 wood off a tee, but now that I have a hywood I took the 5 wood out to make room. I'm keeping my 7 wood for now . I still need to test my 7 wood vs my 4 hybrid. your videos inspire me, please keep them coming!
Much more to come! I hope you got a chance to watch today's video. The Hywood is my favorite club. Thank you!
I went to a Cleveland demo event today and came home with the Cleveland Launcher Halo XL 7 wood. I've never had a 7 wood, it was so easy to hit and get airborne. I'm going to take my 5 wood out of the bag and replace it with the 7. Thanks for your videos.
Very nice!
Dropped the 3w. Play 5w, 7w & 4hybrid. The gapping is perfect for me. 195, 210ish and 220-225 w/ 5w. Could only hit 3w good 50%, so got rid of it.
That sounds perfect !
I carry a 9 wood. I love it. Its my crutch. When things go wrong and I cant seem to hit anything, that 9 wood helps me find my way again. I also love it because when I hit it right, I crush it!
I really need to try one of those!
This is my favorite part of my bag so I found this video to be quite informative. With distances slightly shorter than yours, I'm going with 4 wood (perfect balance off the tee and deck), 3 hybrid (my go to guy) and 4 hybrid (most workable and gets me out of trouble) for now.I like the idea of a 7 wood but I'm not sure I could find a place for it in the bag.
Glad it was helpful!
What will help set you apart from other golfers that may be longer than you is your short game. Most other golfers don't have good short games. Concentrate on pitching100 yards and in with 2 wedges, pitching over bunkers, chipping 30 yards and just off the fringe, long putts and 3-foot putts. You will be fine. Drive for show, chip & putt for dough!!!
I've pretty much been concentrating on short game for the past 38 years. Thank you for watching!
I think you need to carry at least one hybrid because they are so good (for me) out of the short rough. But I am buying a hy wood in March. Thanks for putting in the work.
I will keep the 4,5, and 6 hybrids in the bag. The Hywood goes between the 4 hybrid and the 3 wood. Thank you for watching!
Great video.
Just bought the hywood love it for playing off the tee on tight fairways and off the grass .
Never liked hybrids until I tried the Cleveland hybrids hit my 4 and 3 a bomb .
Great swing by the way.
Thank you so much!
The Hywood is certainly a great club for you! I actually think it could replace both 5 and 7 wood in your bag. From the videos I have watched you have a lot of confidence in that club and would pull it more often on approach shots anyway. Great video! Jeff
My favorite club by FAR! I just got an upgrade on the driver. Just finished hitting the demo an hour ago. Video coming soon!
it appears that you easily drop a couple clubs. Definitely don't need them all in there since your current distances are overlapping quite a bit. Just mho. I was able to eliminate the 5w and split the difference with a Taylormade SIM2 Max 16.5 HL. My current setup is;
Taylormade M4 Driver 9.5*
Taylormade SIM2 Max 16.5* HL
Callaway Epic Heavenwood 20.5*
Taylormade SIM 2 Max 22* Hybrid (4i)
2018 Titleist AP3 5i - 25*
2018 Titleist AP3 6i - 28*
2018 Titleist AP3 7i - 31* (bent +1* to 32*)
2018 Titleist AP3 8i - 35* (bent +1* to 36*)
2018 Titleist AP3 9i - 39* (bent +1* to 40*)
2018 Titleist AP3 PW - 43* (bent +1* to 44*)
2018 Titleist AP3 GW - 48*
Volkey SM 9 - 52*
Volkey SM 9 - 56*
Ping Sigma II Putter Blade
I didn't carry all of them. I just used all of them to determine which ones I should put in the bag. I have a video on my club gapping that will further the point. Thank you for watching !
After driver I go: 3w 16.5* HL SIM2 Max, 7w 21* SIM2 Max, 9W G425 cranked to 25*, 6 hybrid 30* g425, 7 hybrid 34* g425, my irons are 7/8/9/pw at 36/40/44/48 7/8 are Miura CB801 (LH cavity backs) 9/pw are Miura TB901 (LH tournament blade) then Miura LH wedge series 52/56/60. Love the set up; my 9w is essentially my 3/4i replacements and 6/7 hybrid take place of the 5/6i
I love that setup. Was just thinking about getting a 9 wood to test. I need a 16.5 3 Wood in my bag. Thank you for watching!
I would say keep the 3W and hywood. Great work keeping track of indoor and outdoor
Thank you for watching!
Nice swing! Smooth
Thank you for watching!
Thank you! Leaning toward purchasing a Hy Wood. This was very helpful. Almost wish the Hy Wood was offered in a #2 about 16 or 17 degrees; more like a 4 wood carry.
Ron, I have a link in the description where you can find it. If you decide I'd really appreciate you using the link. It fits the gap perfectly for me. It is my favorite club and I only hit the 3 wood if I have a good lie. Otherwise, I only lose 10-12 yards hitting the Hywood. It flies high and lands soft. Thank you so much for watching!
Not seeing the link. I'm new to this format.

Well, I'm a year late on this as a new subscriber. Love your channel and may dub myself "a few yards shorter than you, but in the ballpark". I'm ordering a used Hy-Wood, hoping to replace my own 5 and 7 woods. They've produced some really good shots for me, but they also like to misbehave a bit too easily. The next task might be to see if a 9-wood can misbehave less than the 4 or 5 hybrids (those darn "late" hooks when you least expect it), but that's a challenge for the summer.
Keep up the great work! Looking forward to vicariously play along with you many more times.
Thank you so much! I hope to get my hands on a 9 wood for testing in the near future. I appreciate your support!
Thorogh and polished presentation, MSH; thank you. Couple thoughts: My SC series launch monitor routinely reports lower numbers than an indoor launch monitor; maybe the nature of the beast. After watching your tests, I did one of my own at the range and opted for the 5w and 4h. So the top of my bag goes from a Callaway Mini 1.5 driver (14*), to a Cobra Speedzone 5w (18,5*), to an Adams Ideatech 4h (22*). I just felt the 5w was more 'workable' off the tee and from the fairway.
I have been debating the 3 wood a lot throughout the years. My new set which I will do a video on when they arrive has a 3 wood. I hit it great in the fitting (off a mat) but we shall see in real conditions. I have temporarily gone to an old 4 wood. Thank you for watching!
Really informational. Well done and helped a lot. Thank you
Thank you!
Id bag D 3w hywood and 4hybrid
A hywood is so versatile
it such a go to club everywhere on field
High launch and straight when I need it and I can cut the height in half and play almost stinger style shot
I wouldn’t play 7 woods and up I get it some people play them because they easier but it’s just a big 4- 5 hybrid with longer shaft
Just using 4-5 hybrid going give you more options and use better you get
7-9 height to close to a 5 wood and draw more
Thank you so much for watching! Your correct the Hywood is great!
i just bought the xl 4 hybrid. my current 20yo 7 wood goes probably 15 to 20 yards longer than my 15yo 4 hybrid. so i bought the new one. not used it yet but first thing i noticed was how much longer the shaft was and the face is twice the size almost. even bigger than my 7 woods face. cant wait to give it a smash. i'll take that and 7 wood to the range and compare the stats on my launch monitor.
Nothing beats side by side comparison. Good luck!
You have a lot of options. I think you should keep them all but interchange them depend on the course conditions you're going to play. Think of it as your arsenal to use and strategize depending on the course and weather conditions.
Thank you for watching!
Thanks for sharing! Really interesting to see how the technology compares to outdoor conditions. I'm just recovering from back surgery so not sure how I'll swing it, but a Hywood or 3 hybrid probably fits me best.
Thank you for watching! May do a comparison of the two!
I just found your channel, I really enjoy your content..keep it coming. Oh yeah I’m a big Cleveland fan too as I love my Hy-Wood and UHX irons and of course their CBX wedges
Thank you so much!! Video on those wedges coming soon!
Excellent reviews!!! Thanks
Thank you for watching!
Just changed all my woods to senior shaft Ive got a Cleveland Hywood a Wilson D9 7 wood and Wilson D9 4 Hybrid plus a Callaway Max Mavrik 9 Wood not been out with them yet and Im also thinking they might be all very similer but time will tell . Love to see you try out a 9 wood as they really do work well .
I like that idea! Thank you for watching!
Great video content. Makes average golfers like me, think about what’s in the bag. I’m a recent convert to Cleveland golf clubs and find their woods & hybrids have both great performance and great value for money.
Enjoyed your vid & I just subscribed. You have a very consistent swing - wish I could do that. We play Cog Hill every week. However, we rotate between 2,3 and 4. I have the same decision to make. I have a nice 5 wood so I will probably upgrade my old hybrid.
Thank you so much!
This was interesting as I'm thinking about taking out my 6i and replacing it with either a 5 hybrid or 7w. My current set up is driver, 5w, 3 & 4 hybrid, 6-GW, 54* & 58* wedge.
Thank you so much! I go back and forth on the 6 Iron myself. Just got a new set ordered with a 6 Iron. Will see how it goes. Look out for the video. Thank you!
I have the Hy-wood - got it with the heavier 60+g shaft. 40+g shaft too light for me - might loose it in the trees. I call it my 'Cheat-club'. Off tee off ground, does the job.
That's great!
Thanks for the video! You remind me of Tim Meadows!
😁😁😁😁
Cool video man, I didnt even knew hywood existed!
Thank you!
Good research!
Thank you for watching!
Thanks for sharing 😊
Thank you!
That was interesting. I’m surprised that there wasn’t much different between the middle clubs.
The gaps get closer the less clubhead speed a player has. Since I don't hit it far it's hard to get a lot of separation at the top end of the bag. 3 Wood, Hywood, 4 Hybrid will be perfect with 10-15 yard gaps. I may experiment with a 16.5 degree 4 wood to replace the harder to hit 3 wood. Thank you for watching!
Watching a test between 5W 4W and 3W on TXG golf, at our swing speeds the 5W generally goes the furthest on average off the deck. I think a 4W is the best off the turf with our swing speeds.
Yes. 3 Wood is much more difficult to hit off the turf. I have a 4 wood I'm experimenting with. I'll have a video on it soon. Thank you for watching!
Still want you to try a Callaway Heavenwwood!
@@bruceneerhof Eventually I'll get one. Thank you!
Strongly considering adding a hywood to the bag
My favorite club. Thank you for watching!
Great video with good analysis. I'm thinking of the same thing. I recently got a 3 wood and wondering what club do I take out the bag? I got a 5W, 7W, 9W and 4Hy in the bag now. One of them will need to go. Found your channel today. New subscriber. Going to go on a binge watching your videos. Also, never even heard of a hywood. Might look into that.
I've got a link to it in the description. The 3 wood is a tough to hit club. Short term I went back to an old 4wd. Now I'm going 4 WD, Hywood, 4 Hybrid at the top of the bag. I'll have a video coming testing the 4 wood I added. Thank you!
Great video 📸
Thank you!
Good stuff. I have always felt the 3 wood is a club that takes up space. Rarely hit it, so I took it out. 22,19 and 16 deg hybrids and a driver. Wedges next?
Doing this video made me realize how much I need a 4 wood. Only hit the 3 wood off the tee or if I have a really good lie. Otherwise, I'm hitting Hywood or 4 hybrid. I am going to do a full bag gapping soon. This week I have a video starting Superspeed training and a subscriber tip with fairway woods on ball position. 9 Holes next week and Bridgestone E12 review. Thank you for watching!
Thanks for the video very helpful and inspiring following you on the golf course you give a lot of perspective and insight regarding your Club...And man you get that ball straight consistently. if you were to get one piece of advice for hitting driver and woods straighter what would it be? Thanks brother and much success
Thank you for watching. Tempo is king!
i was just looking at the Cleaveland hywood
I have an Amazon link for it in the description of all my videos. My favorite club!
That 7 wood looked as good as any but that 3hywood is just money
Thank you for watching!
I am about to replace my 7 wood and 3h with a 21° utility wood from Maltby called the HyWay. That is, assuming I get better results with it.
Not bad. Sounds like it may be similar to my Hywood. Thank you for watching!
What's in the top end of your bag?
I’d never heard of a Hywood until I started watching your channel. What is the actual difference in it compared to a wood or hybrid?
Also what’s your longest iron you play compared to the 4 hybrid?
Thank you!
@@chizzle3965 7 iron, then I have 6 hybrid, have a more recent video comparing 6 hybrid to 6 iron. Also, 5 wood vs Hywood. Will do another video on Hywood for a subscriber Sunday for you in 3-4 weeks
What loft hywood you using 3 or 4 ?
3
Shoukd be interesting

You hit the hywood consistently. Winner.
It's my favorite club. Thank you!
Nice video. What ball are you using?
Srixon Zstar. What ball do you play? Thank you for watching!
@@mistahshorthitter 2023 I'll be playing vice pro plus red. I was playing warbird yellow but I need more spin to hold greens.
@@cybekgolf I did a video on the Vice Pro and the Vice Drive will be coming out soon. I am yet to try the Pro Plus.
In my bag of nice Adams irons and a Cleveland driver you will see this old beat to hell Wilson Staff 5 wood BECAUSE 190 to 210 it is deadly! I just can't take it out of my bag.
I believe if you have a club that works stick with it! Thank you for watching!
What do you consider a hywood?
Cleveland makes it. It is a combination between a fairway wood and a hybrid. I have a link to it in the description. It's my favorite club. Thank you for watching!
What’s loft of Hywood?
18 degrees
Is that a 3 hywood
It's a 3+. I have a link in description. Thank you for watching!
