On saturday I took some of what i've learned on this channel and shot my best score yet. Most of my success maybe from switching out my bladed wedges for cavity back wedges to match the irons i play. I went with one cleveland cbx 50 degree. A week ago I shot 10 over through 9 holes, this week I shot 3 over through 9!!! unprecedented and hope to repeat my success!
Love the channel !! I am 65 yrs old and I have found that a 5 wood and a 7 wood give me the best options for a smother swing with much less effort and much more accuracy than my hybrid clubs.
Earlier this year I had a 5 wood in the bag and a 3 wood, I didn’t really see a huge difference in the distance so during the off season I went out and did a few test for different 5 wood but was recommended a 7 wood. After hitting the Cobra F9 7 wood, I decided to pick it up and put it in my bad along with a 3 wood. It’s better for me as a sort of mid handicap player. But at the end of the day it always comes down to what will help your game and what you prefer
I love my 5W! It's easy to hit of the deck and fits perfectly between with the distances I get from my driver and my irons.
Callaway Maverick 5 wood is some club guys easy to use, high launch lands soft. Great club all round. I have to agree with Matt on this one. Happy golfing from Ireland lads 🏌️⛳🇮🇪
I agree, using a 15* 3W and 19* 5W. Love the versatility and of control that the 5W adds.
I actually have a 4 hybrid, 5 wood and a 3 wood. Recently dropped my 4 iron for the 4 hybrid since I was hitting it much more consistently
I been thinking about doing the same thing
I love my hybrids ....3,4 ,5 b21 big Bertha
I use 3 wood 3 hybrid and 5 hybrid. Don't know why but it works for me
I've got the same setup going. It was time for the 4-iron to kick rocks haha
Same here. 3 and the 4 hybrids are so much easier to hit than the 3 and 4 irons.
3 and 5 wood are great also.
I played with 5 Wood for years and loved it off the tee. I've switched my setup ( Driver: Ping G400 MAX, 3 Wood: Titleist TS2 @ 14.5 degrees, Mizuno CLK 3 Hybrid @ 19 degrees and Cobra F Max 4 Hybrid @ 22 Degrees. Hybrids offer so much more versatility, especially out of the rough.
Got a trusted 7 wood and love it!
Love your channel Matt!
I am now using a Ping G430 2 Hybrid, 4 Hybrid, and 5Hybrid. 5-PW TaylorMade P790 irons, vokey 50,54,58 wedges.
Inside on trackman, I was only hitting the 3 Wood a little further than the 2 Hybrid. I love the 2 hybrid. It's a GREAT fairway finder. And I can hit stinger type shots with it. Also use it for punch outs from bad lies. Works great. I feel very comfortable with it compared to a 3 wood, probably due to the shorter shaft. I play 99% at my same local course, so it works for me. I did consider ditching the 5 hybrid for a 3 wood, but the 5 hybrid proves to be very valuable from bad lies, and when I need to get the ball up over a tree. So for rest of this year, I am sticking to this setup.
Hey Matt. Love the channel. I'm surprised more people haven't mentioned going with a 16.5 deg. 4 wood only, then a 21 deg. hybrid. I bought a demo Titleist set with that set up and it seems to work. The TS 2 16.5 goes almost as far as my old TM 3 wood and is far easier to hit off the deck.
I use fairway woods on the fairway only highbrid in the grass
I replaced my 3 wood with my 5 wood a couple of years ago. I replaced the hybrid with a 7 wood and I've got the combination that works for me. Now, if I could only lag putt. Thanks for your video. Great stuff.
This channel is awesome. It has rocketed up the ranks and is now my favorite golf channel. Keep 'em coming!
V happy for u now u r getting sponsors for ur vids. U deserve it bro
I agree nice guy doesn’t come across cheesy either like some others
All my woods have a useful time and place. They are staying. The minute you remove the wood you'll tell yourself, I need my 3 wood for this particular shot.. Been there done that.... Oh, by the way I love watching you play golf and your approach to each and every shot. I've learned a lot from you, even in my old age..
I do the same. 3 wood off the tee when I want to make sure I’m in the fairway and 5 wood from the fairway or rough from deep. Love the insights.
I haven't had a 5w in years. However, I did just replace my Taylormade 3w and 3hybrid with the new Ping 425s' and swapped my 4 iron with the crossover utility iron. LOVE THEM! 💖
I have the EXACT same issue. For now I decided to drop my Lob. I can shape my Sand fairly well. I wanna keep the Lob, I just need to get better with it. Then I'm probably gonna drop the Hybrid.
Great video as usual. Been a fan since you were hitting in your backyard. Keep up the great work.
I have the mavrik max 5 wood and love it! I don't own a hybrid, but I'm glad to see someone else uses the same bag configuration I use. lol..... thanks for the video!
I hardly ever carry/use a 3W anymore. I totally love my Titleist 5W. Enjoyed the discussion here!
I love my Mavrik 5W but the 7w is outstanding too.
I appreciate your personality and character in your videos Matt. The set I’m using, which I only have about 15-20 rounds with, I can’t say I’ve ever pulled the the 3 or 5 wood except at the range. But I haven’t been out in about 5 years now. Maybe time for a change as I do rely on my wedges more (probably cause I miss so many greens LOL.
Hi Matt, great channel. I believe I am a little goofy, but I use a g425 Max 5 wood set at 16.5° with a 3 wood shaft. Choked down I hit this 210ish and full swing 250. The second is my g425 Max 7 wood set at 20° to fill the gap after my g425 5 iron. These two clubs are easier to hit than any other’s I’ve tried. Keep up the great content.
I got a whole bag of PXG's this year-woods and irons. When they were fitting me for a 3W, they ran into trouble finding just the right head and shaft combination for me so after trying several things, they ended up putting me into a 5 wood head on a 3 wood shaft, creating essentially a 4 wood. That worked perfectly in my gapping and I've been very happy with it. I recently picked up a 7 wood (Taylormade Sim Max) that I love and it put me in the same situation as you except trying to decide between that and the 3 hybrid. I've taken it out once since I got it and THAT was the easiest club I've ever hit and is extending my range from the hybrid and filling a gap I had just below that 4 wood. Problem solved! Hybrid moves to a spot in my garage bag and the 7W goes in the gamer bag. BTW, I'm a 4 wedge guy myself-PW, GW, 54 and 58 but this time of year here in Georgia, until the grass comes back in, I can leave the 58 in the garage. I just can't hit it consistently off these bare lies we have so I remove the temptation and stay out of trouble. Looking forward to putting it back in play in two or three more weeks.
I liked your customizing "the bag" for a particular course. one with deep rough may be best served by a hybrid, while one with only light rough both 3&5 woods, no hybrid. I find that a hybrid is easier to control using around greens vs. a 5 wood
Smokin them fairway woods Mr SG! I'm a Driver, 3 wood, 5 wood guy. All I need.
I have a Ping G410 5 wood that I’ve changed the loft on to be almost a 4 wood. Then I have a Ping G410 7 wood standard loft and a G410 5 hybrid. All matching shafts. Never had that in my bag before and it’s very consistent. I’m happy I spent the time and money to switch things up. 5 iron to U wedge Ping i210 irons and ping Glide 3.0 54 and 58 degree wedges.
As a new golfer (first round was end of May) I'm fairly decent with my irons as that's what I practiced with off the bat. My driver and woods are what get me in trouble the most. Pouring up a can of SLICE. Hybrids allow me to get some extra distance without losing my ball to the woods
What kind of shafts do you have in your driver and wood. Quick fix without looking at your swing put stiffer shafts in. X stiff shafts completely eliminated my slice
@@TheBooze13 currently using regular flex shafts but my swing speed is not that fast at all I'm hitting like 85-100 depending on how much sauce I put on it. I think I may have identified my issue since I commented that. I have a tendency to bend my lead hand wrist back instead of keeping it flat. There's about 2 feet of snow so I haven't hit a ball in a couple months so can't tell for sure. I'll definitely try out that stiffer shaft thanks for the tip man!
@@Doctoberfest hell yea man I’m dealing with the snow too. But yea those swing speeds definitely warrant stiff shafts. I swing about 115 driver I put x stiff shafts in all my clubs and it changed my life lol. Good luck man
You are my favorite golf UA-cam channel. By adding a 3 and 5 wood, I’ve gotten rid of my 3 hybrid but still use a 4 hybrid.
Love my TS2 3-wood off the tee. I hit it consistently in the fairway around 260 yards, and out-drive most of my buddies hitting driver. I also carry a 3 hybrid that is easy to hit in a lot of situations. I hit long irons well, and I think that's why I like the hybrid over a more lofted fairway wood. I tend to struggle with fairway woods off the deck. Great stuff as always, Matt!
3 wood & 5 wood for me too. Love the 5 wood off the deck and it´s good for long par 3s. I was very good with 3 wood off the deck, until last winter on holiday, when I tried out a TS2 set to 16.5 degrees (so technically a 4 wood I guess), that thing was a beast! booming it! so I got one for Christmas this year and matched it with a TS2 5 wood to replace both my old clubs, can´t wait for the courses to open here again :)
Definitely going to have to look into the 5 woods when I try some clubs out at Carls Golfland!
I feel a lot better about taking the hybrid for the 5 wood in my bag now. Thanks Matt!
Matt, I am an older golfer (77), and I still hit the ball long. I am usually 255 to 260 off the tee with driver. I carry both a 3 and a 5 wood. The 3 wood is a strong 3 at 13 degrees and a stiff shaft although Taylormade is proposing I move to the new SIM2 Max 3 wood which I will likely do. The 5 wood is an old M1 model and I will be getting the new SIM2 model soon to go with my new 3 Wood. SIM2 Max Driver came 2 weeks ago and I love it. As you can guess, Taylormade has my specs which haven't changed much in 5 years. I am lucky to have good genes and be able to do what I do today. But I have never loved the 4 wedge system. DOn't carry a 60 degree as it is a club I never hit well. I learned a lot iabout hitting a sand wedge when I lived in Europe and can do a lot of fancy shots with it. So I have 2 hybrids for the 3 and 4 irons, 5 - SW for irons. With the current 3 wood, off the deck isn't easy for me. That all may change with the new club, we chall see. But I want to thank you for the video, kind of confirmed my idea of the 3 woods staying in the bag.
I just bought a new Taylormade M2 (2017) 3 wood yesterday and so far I’m loving it
Your knockdown video done for Golfers Rx was brilliant. I've spent the last 2 weeks hitting every shot from 110 yds to 80 yds as a knockdown using the technique, just to get accustomed to the mechanics.
My hybrid is the best club in my bag, feel so comfortable using it, its a 3 hybrid so that rules me out using a 5 wood.
I can smoke the crap out of my 3 hybrid....but....I can also pull it way left...so I don't use it on the course
I dropped the 4 iron and kept the hybrid. I use 3w, 5w and 4 hybrid with 5-9 with 4 wedges!
Exactly same.
Like watching when you are on a course. Watching you hit into a screen and being read a bunch of numbers, well...you know what I mean. Great advice, thanks, Matt.
I'm a huge fan of the four wedge setup as well. Currently using G410 Driver, Woods, Hybrid and G425 Irons - new setup, but am debating swapping out the hybrid for a 4 iron, will see how this setup goes going forward.
Setup: Driver (9°)
, 3W (14.5°), 5W (17.5°) , 4H (20.5°) , 5 (23.5°), 6 (26.5°), 7 (30°), 8 (34.5°), 9 (39.5°), PW (44.5°), UW (49.5°), SW (54°). LW (58°), Putter
Great topic Matt thanks! I’m going through this very thought process right now.
I think I will replace my hybrid with a 5 wood. So my lineup will consist of my driver, 3 wood and 5 wood and 4 iron down to 4 wedges 52, 56 and 60 degree wedges. I like your videos, keep them coming.
I'm still old school hitting Ping G20 5, 3 and driver. I purchased an Adams Golf hybrid (22 degree I think) about 10 years ago and never really adapted my swing to play it consistent. I finally gifted it to my golfing mentor and he loves it.
Yes!!!! I use 3 wood as dual purpose. Tee and long fairway. Then 7 wood. Same reasons you gave. Great video. Love the sense of humor. Keep up the good work.
Crazy, you dropped this video the day my new mavrik 5 wood was delivered. Playing my g410 3 wood at 13.5 degrees as more of a tee club or a long par 5 club and the 5 wood at 18 degrees. That mavrik is so easy to hit.
Really interesting Matt. I am off 25, driver goes 220 yards. I have always kept a Taylor Made 2 Rescue 16 degree in the bag, plus a 5 wood. 2 weeks ago I bought a 3 and a 4 Callaway X-Hot hybrid - so easy to hit, super straight and I get 200 and 180 yards respectively. So enough yardage to reach every par 4 and 5 in regulation if I hit straight. Great for punching out from under trees and I use the 4H for bunting up on to the green. It's an old man shot but who cares. So for me I came to the opposite view - no rescue/fairway woods, 2 hybrids. I'll trade a few yards from a 3 wood for straight with a hybrid any day. Off scratch or 1 - I agree a different story. Cheers
I've never been able to hit a long iron so I have always kept a 3 & 5 wood in my bag. Been hitting Cobra F8's for a couple years and love them. My wedge game needs a lot of help so I keep clubs in my bag that I can use to get yardage to take a full swing into greens. Keep the videos coming Matt hackers like me love the input!
Glad I waited till the end to comment - was gunna say BOTH! i've replaced my 4iron with a hybrid (similar loft, easier to hit) then play Driver, 3 & 5 wood (different brands, what works for you) then 3 wedges and a putter
I've also had a 3 and 5 wood in my bag for a couple of years. Great advice!
Great Video Matt..i have a hybrid and a 5W in my bag....i use 5-pw plus a couple of extra wedges and putter. and driver...
Hi ...I’m in England and have to say I love your content and your style. So easy to watch , great advice and always look forward to your new vids. I’m glad I don’t see snakes on course like you had recently !! Keep up the fab work ....Rich the English Golfer
Snakes ! You should play in Oz mate! Then you will see snakes on the course, and Roos, emus the occasional deer.
Got a tsi 4 wood and it’s awesome. Well worth a try Matt.
Bought a Maverick Max 5W last year. It is absolutely AWESOME!!! Broke 100 almost immediately and very close to break 90. This year I added a SIM 2 MAX driver. What a powerful combo!!
Got fitted last spring. I was set on a 3 wood. Walked out of there with a TS2 5 wood. way more control and confidence with the 5 wood.
Interesting thoughts! I personally like having both in the bag, allows you to play different kinds of shots. Nice video 👌
Play both! I use Driver, 3W, 5W, 5hy, 6-P, 52-56-60 Best setup I've had so far. Super versatile and confidence inspiring from top to bottom.
Why no 5 iron?
@@xSRGxJake I have a tendency to get steep and transitioning too fast. Having that wide hybrid sole and the weight being back of the head gives me the turf interaction I'm looking for while providing extra forgiveness. If it makes sense, I'm a steep sweeper of the ball.
That's only 13?
@@atone1855 I keep an orange whip in the bag for warm ups and tempo training. When it's not there I put in a 4 hybrid.
Never got behind the idea of taking the 5 wood out the bag and replacing with a hybrid. 5 wood is my best hitting club!
That’s me my 3 and 5 are me go too clubs I have them dialed them in 50 yard increments in case I just need to hit my safety valves on a mentally tough hole the ten yard gap in my wedges honestly isn’t worth fixing over having two fairways
I have the mavrik drive, 3 wood, 5 wood and just invested in the 7 wood as I did not have a 3 iron. I find the 3 wood not so easy to hit as the 5 wood, but I can usually guarantee I draw the 3 wood off the tee and that helps when I do not want to go too much right.
I compromised and went with a 4-wood and with my new set (T200's) not having a 3-iron, I get to put in my u500 2 iron as an everyday. I too go with 4 wedges, 43 W from the set, then 48, 54, 60 sm8's. Got them all towards the end of the season here north of the border so I'm really looking forward to the upcoming season.
Agreed, I have both in my bag as well for the same reasons. Great vid!!
My new setup is a Driver, 3W, 3H, and 4H, whereas my old setup was just a driver and 3 Hybrid. Just chatting with my dad the other day about a 5 wood and how easy it is to hit. I’m gonna test my new setup first to see if I’ve got the right variation of big clubs to consistently hit the 200-210 plus yard shots.
Very helpful to see if I want to go for a 5W later on in time.
I play with a 15-degree 3 wood which I mainly use off the tee, but also on those long par 5s. I pair it with a 19 degree hybrid which plays similar enough distance-wise to a 5 wood for me, but a bit more versatile.
Great Putt! Immediately hit the like button!
Good Call!!! Getting rid of the Hybrid and getting me a 5wood:)
Not played golf in about 2 years until last weekend. Was delighted to find a 5 wood and 7 wood in my bag I had bought and forgot about. And boy did they come in useful.
I kept the 3W tossed the 5W and replaced it with a 3H. Why? Same reasons, 3H is easier to hit from the rough or the fairway. It's a personal choice. ✌
I have same setup for the same reasons. I like my 19degree 3h. It’s easier to hit than a 5w and if goes a similar distance
I got fitted for a Mavrik fairway yesterday. Due to the increase in loft and spin I actually ended up hitting the 18* 5 wood further and with tighter dispersion than the 15* 3 wood or the 13.5* 3+ wood. A quirky little anomaly!
I used a 4i off tee most of last year, also bought my 1st chipper to use and love that thing, picked up an Epic flash 3hy to try off tee this year, if I could find a 3wood in 3hy shaft length I buy it in a heart beat
I have a 3 and 7w, and 5h. But can adjust the 3 to be a 5 which is usually how I play it. My hybrid is used more like a punch out rescue club and as a "putter" off the green.
I have a 3 wood and a 3 hybrid in my bag. The hybrid is the same loft as a very worn 5 wood I had so it works out for me. I think I would like to add a driving iron to add another option in the future
I use the both. 3 wood off the tee and on long approach’s. 5 wood on shorter par 4s or long par 3s. 5 woods are good for getting over trees on long approaches as well. Got that Mav 5 wood and epic speed 3 wood. Love ‘em both.
Jeff, you low a low handicapper, your rotation thru the hit and eye coordination makes you good as you are. I'm still a high handicapper and my 'work in progress' is weight transfer so a 9 and 5 fairways are in my bag. My swing speed is slower so no 200+yd shots for me so I need 1 more stroke .... but thanks to the video as it reinforces the consistency needed.
I do enjoy the videos! It's good info and the humor makes it fun to watch.
Love it! I would never not have my 5&3 wood !! Great choice my man!
Loved the video; I’m able to get by with 3 wedges 3 & 5 wood with a hybrid
I recall going to a course with my dad and uncle as a kid, back in the days of persimmon drivers. I saw a golfer who had mostly woods in his bag, just a couple wedges and putter besides the woods. I have always been curious how that would work out.
I'm a high handicapper and i got a package set with driver, 3 wood, 4h, 5-sw irons.
I really struggle to hit the 3 wood and the 5/6 irons. My golf pro at my course suggested to get a 5 wood as it is easier to hit. It's perfect for me, good for long par 4 and 5s at my course to get further down the fairway. It's good for long par 3s where a driver is too much.
Love my mavrik 5 wood as well very dependable, gotta epic speed 3 wood learning it so far so good
Not being a long hitter I say 5 over 3 all day. Very easy to hit off the deck! If it’s down in the rough just get out 1st advance 2nd! Great video!
Did you move out of state?
Great analysis of the two clubs. Something to consider
Always look forward to your vides. Great to see you have a sponsor
Keep up the good work
Exactly!! Great video my man!!
I am similar to you, will roll with either 3w/5w or 3w/2i. My hybrid is a 4 so it's either 4i or 4h depending on the course. If I need to hit that 4 range (200-210) off the tee a lot it's the iron, if it's more just for hitting long approaches I'll go hybrid.
Enjoy and learn a lot from all your videos , thank you!
What degree have you set your five and three woods at ?
I have the Titleist TSi2 3wood in a 16.5 degree. I love it and hit it off the tee almost all the time.
Cobra F9 5 wood set at 17.5 degrees. I follow that with a Cobra OS 3-4 hybrid at 20.5 degrees. It's like a mini fairway & hits the yardage number I need. Most recreational golfers will struggle with a 3 wood. Too hard to hit off the deck & not enough club head speed to get a decent trajectory.
Ditto. Slower swing speed golfers are better off with the 17-20 degree wood off the deck. Arcoss told me that my distances with 3W and 5W were too close to warrant carrying both. That, and I hit the fairway more often with the 5W off the tee. Why try to use a club that you lack confidence with?
I went with a Ping 5 wood head and the three wood shaft and it is absolutely awesome and does the trick instead of two clubs. The 5 wood head is super easy to hit any time and the 3 wood shaft is long enough for any type of shot
I am a fan of 4 woods...it is the tweener fairway wood.
I had one I liked until I broke it, now replaced with a 5 wood I like even more.
I agree. I just added a TS2 4 wood (16.5 degree head) to the bag last season. When we did the testing, the 13.5 degree head blended too close to my driver and I had trouble hitting the 15 degree off the deck. The 16.5 degree head hit the sweet spot. Love the ball flight and easy to hit off the deck.
I have the 4 Mavrik. Without a doubt, it's my favourite club. It's a rocket.
I never carried a 3 wood. I use a karsten 1 or 2 4 and 5 wood.
I carry 4 wedges and locked in on a 17 degree 4 wood to remedy the indecision of carrying a 3 or 5 w, and it has worked well. My other wood is a 21 degree hybrid - if less yards are required, then go to a 4 iron.
I used to play driver (1 wood), 1 iron, 2i - PW, SW & LW. As I got older I lost the 1 & 2 irons and added a 3w and another wedge. Even older still, I ditched the 3 iron and replaced it with a hybrid. Now, I'm struggling with the 3 wood off the deck (off the tee is fine) so I'm looking to replace it with a strong 5 wood. I may even loft the hybrid up a little and garage the 4 iron too. Don't let anyone tell you that getting old doesn't suck. For golfers, it does!
the music ... it's like watching the A-Team or some series from the eighties :-)
Man your videos help because you don't really bs around stuff awesome content!! I'm in love with my Taylormade R15 3 wood not the easiest but when you get it down thing is a rocket!
Hi Matt, I live in England and especially during the lockdown here have loved your video's. My chipping hasn't got a load better, YET, but that's just me, not you 🤷♂️. I use 4 woods; D, 3W, 3Hybrid & 5Hybrid and have 4 wedges, although sometimes I wonder why!!. Keep it up, stay safe.
Great video 3 and 5 wood for me all day long I find the 5 wood much better for confidence and consistency than a hybrid for those 190-200 yard shots I'm thinking about dropping my 4 and 5 irons for a 7 wood I'm in my early 60s and think this would take out the negative thoughts I have hitting those irons keep up the great work greetings from Bonnie Scotland
I go strong 3W (13.5*) and strong 5W (16.5*) and just roll w/ 48/54/58 for wedges and I have been fine. Mr SG the TSi3 4W/5W are money as well. So easy to hit and are long.
My set up is 5w and 2 hybrid with steel shafts trimmed to irons length.
I haven't carried a 3 wood for about 10 years now so it's a 5 wood for me all day long. I can't hit a 3 wood off the turf if my life depended on it, and my 5 wood off of a tee is almost as long as my 3 wood... so it's a no brainer for me. This leaves room in my bag for a 7 wood. :-)
Same here
Just bought the same 5 wood per your suggestion. Thanks for clearing this up for me.
4 Wood, and 7 wood for first time this year. Got 7 Wood and ditched Hybrid. Loving it. Nice Vid.
Got new Ping irons (i210) on order & I've decided to drop my hybrid & I am going with a Ping G425 3 iron crossover, It's a beautiful club to hit. I also carry a Ping G410 3 wood.
I use a titleist 3 wood and I absolutely love it. I’m currently deciding between a hybrid and a 5 wood. I’m probably getting a 5 wood
I think a hybrid is more versatile. You can hit out of the rough easier, use it for bump and runs around a green too, and its easier to get the ball in the air.
That’s also a good reason why I want to have a hybrid
