When I lived in the UK I went to buy a hybrid. Hit quite a few balls and was trying to decide which I liked the look of. The professional asked me to try another club and not to look what it was. Needless to say it was a 7 wood. Yes, I bought the 7 wood.
I switched from my 3 hybrid which was my favorite club to a 7 wood four years ago, what a difference. I also got rid of my 3 wood for a 4 wood, i can get my 4 wood in the air all the time compared with the 3. A real game changer for senior golfers.
Love my 7 wood. I cannot stress how much I love my 7w. Have never liked the shape or performance of hybrids, so the high lofted fairway woods have been a godsend. My bag goes 7W, 9W, and I even sometimes put in an 11 W. Happy holidays to you and yours
I picked up a TM M6 7W at the end of the season (for me it was October) and it was the perfect 175 yard "point and shoot" club. I had tried a 3 hybrid with the same loft in the past but didn't find it nearly as easy to hit. Thanks!
Interesting video. I first bought a 3 hybrid and I had trouble hitting it consistently. Consequently I took it out of the bag. Thereafter I got a 7 wood (and a 9 wood) and had immediate success with it. Recently I took my 3 wood out of the bag as I found I rarely used it and the results were no better than my 5 wood. I replaced it with the 3 hybrid. Consequently I have both clubs and use them for completely different purposes. 7 wood for fairways and good lies, and three hybrid for more distance out of the rough (the key to me was to treat it like an iron and not a small fairway wood) and punch shots and sometimes chipper around the green.
Awesome video! I am in the dilemma whereas I was fit for clubs but confidently carry 13 clubs. I love my driver and use a 16.5* fairway metal (great club for my aging swing) and my next lofted metal is a 21* hybrid (love it for dispersion) Hit it 190 plus whereas the 16.5* is longer but the dispersion isn't as tight. Love the hybrid for the rough as well. I would LOVE* to add another metal for length and I am in-between a 18* hybrid and a 18* 5 wood... I got my handicap down this year (2.6 strokes) but learned to hit that hybrid and a slightly longer short iron into par 5's and my numbers improved... I'll have to do some research as there is a 5* gap between the fairway and the hybrid however wondering if a 2* gap would make much of a difference.... Thanks again MSH and HAPPY NEW YEAR 2025
New subscriber, enjoying your content and watching your great swing. Looking at replacing my 19* hybrid and 22.5* hybrid iron for clubs I can hit higher. I hit my 19* straight but far too low and I’m inconsistent with my 22.5* and only use it for punch shots. I’ve been teeing off with a 17* 4 wood because I haven’t figured out my driver. The more utility clubs to gap between my 5 iron would be a great help…
Good stuff MSH. I go back and forth on hybrids vs. fairways. I'm surprised to see the fairway wood tackle the rough so good as I always thought that was the domain of the hybrid. I'm a slow swing speed player.
I've been thinking about switching to a 7 wood. Hybrid is hit or miss "some pun intended" for me. I hit my 5 wood very well, so it stands to reason a 7 wood might be something to try.
I have had a 7-wood in the bag for years. My first one was the Callaway Steelhead Plus (the blue one) and it was replaced only about 2 years ago by the Sim 2. It is just so much easier to hit, I am confident with it, I can shape it and I can change the trajectory if I need to. I have experimented with a Callaway Rogue ST 3-hybrid and I struggled to get confident with it. It's a personal thing for sure, because I hit the stuffing out of my Rogue ST 5-hybrid with so much confidence. The 7 wood gives me what I am looking for so I stick with it.
I recently bought myself a 5 wood, still busy working out if it can replace my 3H. It's longer from the tee, but equal on fairways. From rough the 3H "feels" easier, but haven't gotten enough stats yet from my lovely shotscope watch to determine if it's a less risk option for real. Still keep both in at the moment, like you said, the second argument would be the lower launch of a hybrid in windy weather.
Love your videos they are amazing! Question so i have a 4 hybrid that i hit inconstant its either a well struck ball or a chuck. I have a 5 wood in my bag that i hit so pure everytime and that goes about 210 so should i replace my 4 hybrid for a 7 wood? I hit my 4 hybrid about 185 would i get that yardage from a 7 wood or should i get a 9 wood?? Or do i need a hybrid in my bag and is it stupid to carry both a 5 wood and 7 wood? Sorry for this long question i just need answers lol
I would look at the next club down and the gap your are filling. If you hit your 5 wood 210 what is your next longest club outside of the one your are replacing? If you hit it 175 that is a 35 yard gap and a good club may be a 190-195 yard club. If shafts etc are the same you are probably talking around 5 degrees of loft difference between your 5 wood and the next club. Personally, I would look at what shots do I need more often? If it's closer to 195 I would get the 7 Wood and if it's closer to 185 I'd look at a 9 Wood. Hope this helps!
Yes, I struggle with this often. I have both the 7W and 3 hybrid and use both depending which course I am playing. I prefer the 3 hybrid because I like the smaller head. I have an old Tight Lies 7W I still like. I am 64 and swing speed is 87mph, as I get older it will drop. Can you review the reasons, benefits of a 9W and who & why one should play it.
Good video! You know I made the change to a 7 wood from a 3 hybrid. I lose a few specialty shots that I now need to do with 4 hybrid, but i think I get a little better from the 190 to 200 range. Your Hywood might be the best of both worlds in one club.
Thanks for posting this.. I have a competition tomorrow between my 3 iron, 22* hybrid, and 19* hybrid. Each are vying for than one spot between my 3w and 4i. But now I'm seriously considering getting a 5w or 7w. Maybe it's just because I want to shop more 😂
Really interesting and important for the amateur golfer. I think of what types of ball flights suit me and my golf course the best. I then write down the design characteristics of the golf club which will help me achieve this and what suits my eye. I take this information to eBay and buy some cheaper second hand older clubs to test my design hypothesis. From there I either have a cheaper club or clubs which work, or at least I have some good testing information to take to my PGA professional. The journey of testing and self learning is valuable for improving technique and understanding. Good video 👍🏌️
I have a Cleveland Haywood. What difference performance-wise is there between the Haywood and a 7 wood? Unless I'm mistaken they seem to serve a similar function. Thanks for your videos and happy holidays to you and yours.
I carry neither. There's a 15-20 yard gap between my 5w and my 4h...with room for only 14 clubs in my bag, I'm more concerned about gapping in my wedges than fairway woods and hybrids. It's also important to keep in mind that hybrids are not all created equal, and some designs are only slightly smaller heads than the fairway woods they're overlapping. If you're good enough that you're fine-tuning your hits at that range, more power to you. For myself? The rules only allow you to carry so many clubs. You will never have enough slots in your bag to carry "the perfect club" for every shot you find yourself having to take. On the three or four courses that I regularly play, I ~might~ use a 7w/3h once a round. Much more likely that I'd try choking up on my 5w or hitting it at 60-75% than reach for a club that I almost never use and therefore have almost no confidence in.
There are different designs of all clubs even fairway woods. The video was more general in nature since I can not test all models. I may go into different types in the future but have to have access to the clubs. Thank you for watching!
Greetings my brother, I thought that a 7w was more like a 4Hybrid, this is very personal, I just learned something new!!! Tnx for the information and for the video☺🙏
I actually carry both. I like the 3 hybrid off the tee on tight driving holes, especially in dry conditions. I get much more roll out with it. But I love the 7 wood when I’m trying to hold the green or go over trouble. ⛳️
Per ShotScope, I hit my 3 hybrid 182 yards average, and my 7 wood 181 yards on average. That only tells a part of the story, however. The 7 wood always flies higher, and lands softer, plus it goes straight, while I hit the 3 hybrid left all the time. The bottom line is that I hit the green 18% of the time with my 7 wood, and 0% of the time with my 3 hybrid. The 3 hybrid left my bag months ago, and won't return. I use my 7 wood from tees, from the fairway, from the rough, from deep weeds, and from bunkers, and I almost always hit it well. I wouldn't trust the 3 hybrid for most of those shots, and I don't miss the 3 hybrid at all.
Great subject: I have golfing buddies who can hit hybrids and not fairway woods. For me I am the opposite, I can easily hit a fairway wood but cannot do anything with a hybrid. The hybrid clubs that I have are extremely heavy to me.
I like them both 7wood are easier for most golfers to hit ,but not when it is windy that's why I keep them both in the bag ,3hybrid from the tee and fairways on windy days
Dropped 3i for 7w and haven’t looked back. You can do a lot of things w/ the 7. My game has changed for the better when I dropped 3i, 4i, & 3w and replaced them w/7w, 4hy, & 5w.
Interesting. I'm the opposite. No confidence with fairway woods off the ground. 4H gets me 190 carry, 3H carries around 205. Thinking of getting a 2H to replace my 3 wood.
@mistahshorthitter Not particularly. I can get through some rough pretty good with them. If the lie is really bad and I'm still 200 or more out, it's most likely a par 5. I just punch a 5i as far as I can and go from there. You know golf. Sometimes, you just have to take your medicine.
@@mistahshorthitter Hmm, Genuine question, if woods are better from rough, what is the point of hybrids then?, just use irons and fairway woods like we always used to. (especially now that we have 7 and 9 woods)
There are many factors (different spin rates, launch angles, descent angles, etc.). Everyone is different. Some people hit hybrids better than woods and vice versa. Whatever works for you.
I wouldn't necessarily make that decision. I'm shorter and would choose a 7 wood over a 3 hybrid for certain. If you have more trouble with longer clubs and fairway woods that would be something worth thinking about.

I think for a 90's shooter the Takomo wedges are more than good enough at a price a lot lower than the big name brands. I hope to review some wedges at an even lower price in the future. If you have a 50 degree you may be able to save yourself some money and just go with a 56 degree. I'll see if I can come up with a video to help. I’m surprised that the ball speed is so similar. I would have guessed that the 7 wood with the longer shaft would have had a little bit higher ball speed.
I've been curious MSH, what is your current GHIN handicap, if you carry one? What was your lowest? And, when is the last time you sss.... mmm... shanked a golf ball? LOL
Another topic to explore. I just learned (late) that the Mizuno JPX 921 hybrids are the same length as the iron they replace, meaning club length. Most hybrids shaft lengths are longer. Would be good to get your insights or thoughts. I actually think the ideas is a good one by Mizuno.
If I can get them in hands I will definitely do that. Clubs are tough to get but I'm still working on a contact to make it easier. It would really help the channel. Thank you!@@galemurphy4914

If you have a 50 degree you may be able to save yourself some money and just go with a 56 degree. I'll see if I can come up with a video to help. In my set I play 48, 54, 58 but will be making a small change in the Spring. @@Treyz44
@@mistahshorthitter Thank you! I will start looking at those now for a 56. I will be watching for those videos too.
Thanks MSH. "Hit'em straight "
Thank you Arnold!
I’m surprised that the ball speed is so similar. I would have guessed that the 7 wood with the longer shaft would have had a little bit higher ball speed.
I think the loft makes up for it. 19 deg vs 21 deg
If you like a 7 wood, you should check out a 9 wood.
One day I'll get a chance. Thank you for watching!
7wood all day long, me and hybrids don't get along.
Thank you!
I bag a 7w and a 9w. Best decision I ever made
Nice!
My problem is: keep topping woods, including 7 wood. Help!
Will do!
@@mistahshorthitter Thanks!
I've been curious MSH, what is your current GHIN handicap, if you carry one? What was your lowest? And, when is the last time you sss.... mmm... shanked a golf ball? LOL
I have to start tracking my handicap again in 2024. My lowest was +1.6 but I didn't spend to much time under scratch. I can't remember that !
Real videos or real lies! Thanks! Great content.
Thank you!
Very nice comparison video MSH!! I have a 3 Hybrid with 19° but if I had the option to get a 7 wood I might of gone that way!! I have only used it a couple of times on the course since I bought it. But it has done it's job when I used it!! Will you be doing a review of the Kirkland irons and driver? 🏌♂⛳
I'm not sure. Those are tough to get but it would be nice!
@@mistahshorthitter I will keep my fingers crossed for ya!!
I have a 7 wood in my bag. For me, it’s a better launch angle than a 3 hybrid. I do have a 5 hybrid in place of a 5 iron. It gives me a higher launch angle than a 5 iron. I hold more greens with both
Both of those are great clubs to hold a green with and get out of the rough! Thank you Jason!
Good Morning MSH,
Are you going to enter the GoodGood tournament February 7th in Tempe?
It’s open to all content creators.
Hope you decide to participate!
All the BEST!
I haven't heard of it. I'll look it up. Thank you!
You ever tried a 9 Wood ?
Not yet. If I can get my hands on one I will.
Every time I hit a 7 wood I want to duck, seems like I hit it straight up
Wow. Defintely, not the club for you!
And 7 wood is more equivalent to a 4 hybrid not a 3
Great!
3 hybrid, the small head let's me use it in more situations and lies 7 wood can't do well! I hit a very straight ball down the middle as I have been playing since I was 9. Love the Tour Edge 700 series hybrids!
Very nice! It's possible that you have a naturally steep golf swing.
I find that I play out of the rough better with a Hybrid over my irons
Normally that works for players who are either steep swingers of the club or fast swingers. Two other possibilities are you don't like longer shafted clubs or you are just a really good golfer. Thank you!
@@mistahshorthitter steep, real steep lol
