How's this for a history lesson!!!??? The Civil War, metalized!!! This album, The Glorious Burden, and epic three part song, Gettysburg 1863, will never get old!!!!! I just played the song for the first time in a while, and it is as beautuful today as the first time i played it, in 2004!!!! One of the best metal songs ever!!!! This was such an epic moment for Iced Earth. Been a fan for a long time, still a huge fan, but wasn't sold on Ripper filling the void after Barlow left. Aside from a handful of tracks, I don't feel Tim was the right choice as a vocalist in general, but this trio of songs was perfect for him and is one of the best pieces IE ever recorded in my opinion.

I agree about Barlow a lot he just has the powerful dramatic sound but Owens also does well just differently. Barlow was not a song writer and was not at all a metal head haha so that plays a part in his departure.

*sigh* …….even in this epic series of songs the trend of forgetting the existence of General Meade rears it’s goggle eyed snapping turtle head.
This absolutely overlooked chad of a general took 4 wounds during war, was a brilliant aggressive division and corps commander. He lead the assault that broke through at Fredericksburg and ran around cussing out officers sitting safely in the rear trying to get support for his men to no avail.
Spends chansolersville screaming at Hooker to press his advantage to no avail.
Then gets handed the command of the recently defeated army of the Potomac THREE days before the biggest battle in American history and friggin wins just when the nation most needed a win. In spite of common belief he does pursue Lee in spite of taking huge casualties and massive officer losses, bad weather, and again, being in command a whole 5 days by this point, and wisely chooses not to throw his men at Lee’s fortified positions on the Potomac.
He beats Lee in the Bristoe Campaign handing him a series of small but humiliating defeats in a row.
Then when Grant comes in to take over the guy has the balls to look Grant in the eye and be like, this sh*t is too important, if you want your own man in this position I will step down. And Grant chose to him there.
He wasn’t perfect (looking at you cold harbor) and he wasn’t there most charming or eloquent. But the guy got the job done Time and again and died shortly after the war due to his wounds. His rep git shanked by Dan Sickles who for some reason got to live into the 1900’s and Meade’s rep has just never really recovered. If you ever want to see something sad compare Mead’s grave to Lee’s Tomb. If you knew nothing about the two guys except that they were generals that faced off against each other I don’t think you’d guess the guy that was the victor…………. Also my dude invented a freaking lighthouse lamp that became the US standard for a long time.
    Oh…..dope songs btw.

I doubt Jon Scaffer would've participated in an insurrection if his side had won, even if there was evidence that his side won by cheating. He also took a deal ratting out other insurrectionsts to avoid jail time. Really putting his money where his mouth is, eh? You may want to consider that maybe the insurrectionists were not brave patriots, but rather entitled morons that attempted a coup, because things didn't work out as they wanted.

Have you read the lyrics? It's simply a re-telling of the Battle of Gettysburg. Some liberties were taken in the narrative of how the characters might have felt in the heat of war on both sides, but it's an artistic expression, and a damn good one. "if I ever draw my sword on you, may the good Lord strike me dead". If anything, that is sympathizing with human beings as a whole.
All-in-all, this is a more accurate and detailed look at what happened during those few days in 1863 than any half-assed history book you'll find in a school.
There's a reason that Jon Schaffer wrote a song about this particular battle as opposed to others. It might be the single most important battle in American history, along with Lexington & Concord, and D-Day. To put it simply for you, essentially, whoever won this battle would win the war, and that's exactly what happened.
Hundreds and hundreds of thousands of Americans died in the Civil War, nameless and forgotten. They were tortured on both sides. Ruthless murder... FIVE TIMES more Americans died in one day at Gettysburg than on September 11th, and there were three days at Gettysburg, not to mention the rest of the war. For you to compare some old ladies and cosplayers walking around a building to THAT is, honestly, completely fucked up.
There's no sympathy to either side, the whole war was an absolute tragedy, and that is what these songs portray.

    • @Femaiden
      @Femaiden Рік тому

@@shure81 this is, indeed, a masterpiece. it's just that Jon being at the Capitol on that day made me stop and listen to this in another way.
I get it. The guy is super patriotic. he cares about his country.
      .
and then you are sitting there calling me "effed up" for trying to read between the lines and make a connection of what's being said in these lyrics to what happned at the Capitol.
      .
JON WAS THERE! He was at the Capitol alongside all the "old ladies and cosplayers" and white supremeacists and the militants with zipties trying to break in and kidnap government officialts and go God know what they would have done to them if they had actually breached the inside and got at them. . .
      .
maybe i was ignorant of Jon's political views. but then we have the other song on the album "Valley Forge" (another awesome song BTW), says to close your eyes and imagine one of the soldiers at valley forge and then ask whether or not seeing us today if he would look upon us with anger and disgust because of our ignorance and complacency and that almost sounds like he's bringing in the Oathkeeper's ideas into the music.
Jon was wearing an oath keepers hat to the capitol, and yet the oath keepers disavow any connection to him, but then why does he wear that hat.
I never realized how far right Jon's beliefs are, but then again. . i just realized that having radical political views is Metal.
it's Metal to be political. .
      .
back to the whole Gettysburg epic.
the civil war was a dark time in history.
I see that about a third of the song seems to be POV of the North and then the rest feels like is from the POV of the South. especially High Water Mark, the part with General Lee ordering the men to charge and his second in command is advising him not to and he says there's no choice, we have to do this and then he sends all those men to their deaths and then his like "all this blood is on my hands, thousands dead is this god's plan. .all this is my fault" . .etc. .
like it's really trying to get inside the head of the rebel general and what he might have been thinking. like, we are supposed to sympathize with him. The Union General did not get the same treatment in this epic.
again, i get it, as you say, history is written by the winners and i can only imagine what might have happened if The South won the war. .
      .
in all fairness, the song does seem to give a somewhat neutral take of what both sides might be thinking.
obviously, both sides thought they were right. both sides thought God was on their side.
TBH, i don't believe in actuality that war was fought for the noble reasons history wants us to believe.
I just really hope Jon is not a hater, because I used to idolize him and now i feel betrayed, like one of my childhood heroes is not as nice as i thought they were.
      .
      .
      .
i will also say that this album is better than something wicked 2. all that stuff about aliems and stuff and humans being the aliem invaders and i dunno, kind of gives me a scientology vibe, except not really. it's not really scientology, but it kind of has those same vibes, like the kind of secret lore and conspiracy theory that only high level cult members might have access to(?)
      .
i sincerely hope that it's meant to be just a fictional story Jon came up with and not something he actually believes

    • @Femaiden
      @Femaiden Рік тому

and loo, i respect opposing viewpoints. I also get it. the metal scene is full of opposing viewpoints and often it's like "oh, you like such nd such band, but don't like this other band? eff you, a-hole!" and whatever. i respect it if someone thinks differently than me.
      .
i read about what happened to Jon in jail, other inmates death threats and throwing poop at him and he doesn't deserve that.
      .
i feel sorry for him that the record label dropped him and his bandmates quit and Hansi Kursch and Blind Guardian disaccociated themselves.
i mean, that was such an awesome team up. we might not ever get to hear more of that again.

I’m a huge fan of this album and think this trilogy is some top notch stuff but I’m guilty as well when it comes to recontextilizing lyrics after the events of January 6th. It’s more for me like playing devil’s advocate because when it comes to politics I wish that we could just get the good ideas from both sides and actually get stuff done as opposed to the bickering and posturing in Washington these days. (If you want an example I’m for a lot of the budgetary ideas the right has about keeping budgets balanced as long as it isn’t tied to any social agenda and I like to actually see “freedom from religion” when discussing law.)
So I guess I’ll start by saying that it kinda disappointed me that Jon Schaffer would fall for one of the many cons of Donald Trump. I live in PA and republicans voted for the mail in ballot bill. Hell in 2016 Trump voted for himself by mail. Our election process is far from perfect and a solution of having free voter ids would be fantastic and something both sides should agree on. It proves you are who you say you are and makes sure you only vote once while it’s not a poll tax and can be used like any idea helping the poor get over the hurdle of finding cash for identification. I’d even go a step further and say the cards should have unique QR codes so people can vote from anywhere and only do it once. (Though this idea would need many security measures so it could not be hacked or manipulated.) If someone stole an election in this day and age there would be a lot more proof and Trump knew this could be a nice cash grab since he took donations on his website that hardly was used for legal defense. With that being said I admire Schaffer’s patriotism even if it was so wrongly placed. He thought this was his generation’s Boston Tea Party and instead it was an American version of the Reichstag Fire. And now that I said that I’ll mention that I’m no Joe Biden fan and his party used a pandemic to get rid of their “Bernie Problem.” “Hey Bernie you’re down 100 electoral votes even though there’s still thousands left to go, you better quit for the good of the party!” And don’t get me started with Kamala and her work in law enforcement locking up minorities for non violent drug offenses to further her career and then pretends to champion minorities after filling jail cells with them. Let alone the suspicious circumstances on how she became the Vice Presidential nominee in the first place. See my hatred of politicians is bipartisan!
Now some lyrical analysis: I’m gonna be a smart ass and mention that the word “slave” isn’t mentioned once. And throw out the line “…their cause is just.” You could make the argument on those two things alone that this is Lost Cause propaganda however historians will point out this battle had a lot to do with the formation of Lost Cause ideology so do with that what you will. My friend used to joke with me that end of “High Water Mark” was General Lee crying. I wouldn’t go that far as funny as that mental image maybe but it does humanize a man who is still immortalized throughout the south. I feel like not mentioning slavery would be a lot like writing a song about the “March to the Sea” and not mentioning the hundreds of black people who followed Sherman’s army that drowned in the creek. It could be viewed as disingenuous. But like I said I’m just being a bit of a smart ass and playing devil’s advocate. I’m a huge fan of the history that the lyrics get right and how the story is being told even if there are some embellishments. And it’s only after January 6th that Schaffer’s playing the events down the middle seems a bit more damning and that’s not 100% fair to do either because his ideology when writing this song could’ve been much different at the time. And I hate cancel culture and don’t want to get wrapped up in any of its trappings. I just thought it was interesting to see a conversation like this here in the comment section and just wanted to add my two cents.
And no Schaffer doesn’t deserve the treatment he is allegedly getting in jail. Now if only someone like a certain president that had the power to pardon the people that fought his battles would’ve done so maybe he wouldn’t be suffering in that jail cell today.

@@freeparking301 sorry for making this political. I did say, i still love this album.
i discovered Iced Earth in the early 2000's and was hooked on them right from the start. the first song i heard was Slave To The Dark (no pun intended, with the civil war thing. i know that the entire dark saga is about Spawn comics).
i felt a connection with Iced Earth, because it was the first metal band that i found on my own, as in, that someone else didn't tell me about or that wasn't the obvious well known stuff like Metallica and Iron Maiden and you can tell by my screen name that i am definitely an Iron Maiden fan. . as well as a Gwar fan.
      my list used to be
      #1 Iced Earth
      #2 Blind Guardian
      #3 King Diamond/ Mercyful Fate
      #4 Iron Maiden
      #5 Nightwish
and many more, Metallica, Megadeth, Gwar, Sinergy, Hammerfall, Manowar, Children of bodom, Siebenburgen, Cradle of filth,
      .
I loved Demons and Wizards, the collab of Schaffer/Kursch,
I'm also a fan of Twisted Sister, Dee Snider has some of the most rock hard integrity of anyone music artist ever.
and whitesnake (yes, i said whitesnake. the song Here I Go Again helped me through a tough time in my life)
      .
i like Deceased, especially Fearless Undead Machines.
      .
      .
but back to Iced Earth. Glorious Burden came outa bit after 9/11 and I know why Barlowe left the band on good terms to pursue a career in law enforcement, because he thought that was how he would do good.
The Glorious Burden is among the best albums IE has produce, alongside Horror Show and Dark Saga.
Declaration Day, about the first US patriots before US was even a thing prising themselves out from under the heel of England.
Greenface, about the ferocity of US military soldiers.
      their 9/11 ballad. . .
I even own a vinyl record of Glorious Burden, despite not even owning a record player.
also have a picture disk vinyl of Fearless Undead Machines by Deceased. I paid $6.66 for it. how could i pass that up?
I'll admit, i did not care for the albums that came after, like Framing Armageddon as i said it kind sounds too sci fi scientologyish. like schaffer is trying to send some message about humans being the true alien invaders of Earth and that we all need to die out so Earth can heal itself or something, i dunno. maybe i totally misunderstood the Something Wicked lore.
I still have it in my collection.
      .
when it comes to me not knowing about Jon's political views, I guess thats on me for my ignorance.
Dave Mustaine is super political with his band Megadeth as well. i mean, the name Megadeth is referring to the killing power of nuclear weapons. . .
I'll also admit i don't follow politics much. i did not vote for Trump and it is hypocritical of Trump to urge his followers not to vote by mail , while doing so himself. I mean , the president is a citizen as well, and has the right to vote for himself, i get what you mean that it's messed up because he told people not to do it by mail and then cried foul saying that the only reason he lost is because so many Dems voted by mail and tried to get their votes invalidated.
Trump is a despot. if you analyze his tactics, you would see he took it all straight from the pages of the Fascism Rulebook.
      .
I now believe that schaffer is just a guy who really cares about his country. he understands that the govt is corrupt and full of selfish liars only in it for themselves. . but while the oath keepers think the govt has strayed too far from what the founding fathers intended, i think it's still as it always has been. the founding fathers were not as noble as history books want us to believe either. i mean, they were all rich white landowners, half of which engaged in the chattel human labour trade. . .
in some ways, Trump is the embodiment of the original ideals and that's why he can't be allowed to win. .
      .
      .
but then, the US govt must be doing something right, because after almost 250 years, they still haven't imploded in on themselves, despite still not having equality and freedom for everyone.
      .
