@@MonarchMKUltra yes really, look up the 165th US Infantry and the 69th US Infantry, the regiment still exists and I've met members of it. The history of the Brigade is traced through that regiment. Also the Iron Brigade still exists. As does the Stonewall Brigade. History is not traced through the Brigades so much as the Regiments of the Brigade. The 32nd IBCT was made up of regiments that made up the Iron Brigade. The Irish Brigade New York Regiments were consolidated down into the 165th US Infantry Regiment in WW1, later retaking the 69th number and still exist. The Stonewall Brigade is now the 116th US Infantry Regiment.
The Irish in New York didn't support the war for several reasons. One was they didn't want to lose their best men for the real war, freeing Ireland from the English. Two they didn't want to get undercut by cheaper labor, (ie freed slaves).

The Battle of Fredericksburg. Another Civil War meatgrinder battlefield where the Union decided to charge across a barren field and up a hill. The Confederates were defending from behind stone fences and held the commanding heights (Marye's Heights). The result was yet another Civil War slaughterhouse. I've been to the battlefield and the Irish Brigade figures prominently in the history of the battle.

@@joedicicco6124 From 1641 to 1652, over 550,000 Irish were killed by the English and 300,000 more were sold
as slaves. As more men were transported, leaving their wives and children behind, they too were
also rounded up and sold as slaves. Irish women and their daughters were of lighter complection
than the black slaves and were considered more valuable as domestic slaves.
In 1649, Cromwell began a campaign of terror on Ireland. All captured soldiers were transported
to be sold into slavery. A few months later, in 1650, 25,000 Irish were sold to planters in St. Kitt.
During the 1650s , over 100,000 Irish children, generally from 10 to 14 years old, were taken
from their parents, and sold as slaves in the West Indies, Virginia and New England. In fact,
more Irish were sold as slaves to the American colonies from 1651 to 1660 than the total
existing “free” population of the Americas! In1652, Cromwell ordered that the Irish were to
be transported overseas, starting with 12,000 Irish prisoners sold to Barbados. The infamous “ To
Hell or to Connacht ” proclamation was issued on 1 May 1654, confiscating all Irish held lands,
and the native Irish were to relocated west of the Shannon or be transported to the West Indies.
To expediate the process in 1657 the law was further clarified to read: : “Those who fail to
transplant themselves into Connaught or Co Clare within six months… Shall be attained of high
treason… are to be sent into America or some other parts beyond the seas… those banished who
return are to suffer the pains of death as felons by virtue of this act, without benefit of Clergy.”
It was not a crime to kill any Irish, as soldiers were encouraged to do, but the slave trade proved
too profitable to ignore. As a result 52,000 Irish, were sold to Barbados and Virginia alone.
Another 30,000 Irish men and women were taken prisoners and ordered transported and sold as
slaves. In 1656, Cromwell’s Council of State ordered that 1000 Irish girls and 1000 Irish boys be
rounded up and taken to Jamaica to be sold as slaves to English planters. Still there were more as
little record was kept of this activity.
Few people realize from 1600 -1699, more Irish were sold as slaves than Africans

Clear the way, faugh a bheallch, was a battle cry that was used by numerous different Irish regiments in different armies, the 87th prince of Wales Irish who later became the Royal Irish fusiliers was recorded first in the battle of Barossa ,and it is still the motto of the Irish fusiliers,.also used by the Australian 5th and 55th during the First World War , it was the battle cry of numerous units during the American civil war the fighting 69th , 63rd 88th New York volunteer infantry who were part of the army of the Potomac’s Irish brigade, it was also used by the confederate side by the 8th Alabama infantry regiment , some of the comments here are getting a little pissy about religious backgrounds, I say fuck that, these were men who despite sectarian background, joined the armies of their new country and answered its call in its time of need, and bled and died together on battlefields thousand of miles from their birthplace , and were known for their bravery and tenacity . Irish units even to this day have catholic and Protestant in the ranks who together form some of the most elite military units in the world.

In France, we have the "Ronarc'h Brigade" : six thousand men, mostly "marines" used as regular infantrymen during WW1. They were all from the region of "Bretagne" (far west of France, its most celtic part). From september to november 1914, they were sent to Belgium to hold the advance of the Germans. They were expected to hold for a few weeks but keep their spot for almost one month, losing only half of their men, while killing four or five times more Germans soldiers (in french, we say that us, Bretons, we are "stubborn" ^^). Finally, in november 1914, they were relieved and send back to France. True fact : one of my grand-grand uncle was among them (Joseph Lézin, 1889-1914), he was injured at the end of the battle and died at the military hospital. He have had his 25th birthday two month prior, just at the begining of the Great War, and get a medal for "great courage during action".

In America we usually make fun of the French for surrendering, but I actually know my history and the French have had their badass moments. Let's not forget the French actions in WW1. And not to mention after surrendering in WW2 to Nazi Germany, the French Resistance kept fighting as guerillas.

    • @Liopot68
      @Liopot68 4 роки тому +9

@@ericolsen5592 The idea to make fun of the French for surrendering stems from the refusal to follow Bush into Irak. There's never been any allusion to "surrender" before that time, to the contrary the USA were revering France for their help in the American War of Independence. The surrender concept is a pure propaganda tool invented to ridicule an ally who didn't want to roll over when told to do so.

@@Liopot68 False, it was actually the French surrender in WW2. However I agree that it's still highly misleading as the French are much more effective than we make them out to be. In WW2 were using WW1 era tactics and had very relaxed command structure. The French guerilla resistance kept the fight going well until their liberation in 1944. And let's not forget about their actions in WW1, especially at Verdun.

Damn, _Gettysburg 1863_ is easily one of the best discs (or final three songs, depending on what version you got) any metal band has ever released. This first disc of _The Glorious Burden_ is ok, but goddamn, disc 2 is amazing. tbh, I was never a big fan of Matt Barlow, not that I dislike his vocals. (time to piss off a bunch of old school Iced Earth fans >_>) To me Tim Owens is what really made that album truly great. The writing and music would have been pretty good with Barlow (interesting to consider what it would sound like with Block on vocals tbh), but Owens is amazing on vocals there.
(I have been a fan of his since Priest's Jugulator. I grew up blasting stuff like Screaming for Vengeance from a record and while Jugulator is only a decent album, his vocals were great and he only got better in later years imo... and seriously, he replaced Rob Halford, even if it was just 2 albums, stepping in for Halford and doing a good job of it is testament to his ability)
If you can't tell, my loyalty is to what I think of as good, not a particular lineup or whatnot.

To all the negativity: It's suppose to sound like it came from "The Glorious Burden," but with their modern sound. Not about the length either. It's about war. So, yes, their melodic intros & choir would be in a song like this. Musicians do that to give you a sense of story within a song. Esp if you close your eyes or take out the vocals. It's not really about the lyrics. It's how they play it that gives you a realistic feature. Iced Earth has always been that way. They've always been a more melodic & prog approach than your usual thrash & power metal bands. They've always had their own sound. Makes them unique. Also, they changed drastically when Tim Owens took over, and have continued on that similar sound since "Horror Show." And if you noticed, each release under Stu Block has been heavily experimented, because of what he brings with his singing talents.

John Katsoudas -- Brother I feel yah. I was there when Metallica got their start and I like to think I made a substantial contribution to their future fandom. Iced Earth to me belies so many common sense things. They are basically the best pound for pound straight up US power.thrash metal of all time yet very few people even have a clue who they are. I don't get it. I even strategically pick certain songs out like I used to do with Metallica way back in the day. Doesn't work with IE. I've listened to this song and watched this video many times, but just realized this message is much deeper than initially realized. "Your courage defines all you are" applies to us all, not just those in battles of physical violence. Our true values, which are more a conclusion of our selves matured, mature through the exercise of courage throughout the test of mortal life. Great courage would not carelessly risk life and the ability to procreate or provide for one's family just to test valor. A person of virtue must carefully consider values and personal role in serving higher purpose, and courage is exercised when that conviction is tested, to measure our willingness to sacrifice what matters less for what matters more.

Great atmosphere IMO, the live performance was brilliant when I saw them perform it. It was their only encore and the fans were so into the song...and this was in Canada too!

The intro and middle make the song! It's not exactly doom, but like something is on the precipice and about to happen big time, for worse or better. You don't know till the tempo picks up. Then you know it's awesome! And you get that twice, what more could you ask for? "Storm of lead", "The hills alive with murder" Two examples of fantastic lyrics. I love this tune!
