I went as Maverick for Halloween as a kid. The haircut, aviators, bomber jacket and all. This was the first movie that ever made me cry when Goose died. That wasn't in my range yet I can't lie. "I think she's lost it. "I hate when she does that..." Lets see if she spots Andy Dufresne before he goes to Shawshank at the end...such a classic. Kick the tires and light the fires!
My folks took me to see this in the theater. Supposedly for my Dad's birthday, but I was totally obsessed with fighter aircraft. We all enjoyed the movie. The next morning, Dad woke me up while it was still dark. We drove to NAS (Naval Air Station) Oceana, where Dad was stationed. Dad took me to the Air Operations building, right on the flightline. He sat me on the back porch, handed me a cheap camera, two rolls of film, and a pocket full of change, for the vending machines in the building. I spent the whole day watching planes, taking pics, and even scored a couple of squadron patches from pilots. Greatest day of my teenage life! I still have those patches.
In the military, there is no room for breaking the rules or disobeying orders. Maverick knew that.
Watch this a few times and you realize that Iceman is the good guy; he is correct the entire movie.
@@Rallarbusenabsolutely
Nothing says BLOCKBUSTER like a movie about a guy under hack for 2 hours. Lol
1. An old shipmate of mine was onboard the Enterprise when they filmed this.
2. Gooses death was not Maverick's fault. Iceman was bogarting his LOS approach and they got caught in the jet wash. Everything that could have gone wrong, did.
3. I spent 24 years in the US Navy. 6 on "bird farms" (Carriers). I have seen 1000+ launches and landings without a single crash. These men, women and the men and women working the flat tops are doing the most dangerous job in the world (for the good guys). Shout out
4. Kelly McGillis/Charlie was in a movie with Harrison Ford "Witness" that's seriously worth a first time/share HINT HINT
5. Tom Skerritt/Viper not only played Dallas in "Alien" he also played Strawberry in "Up in Smoke" with Cheech and Chong.
6. Val Kilmer/Iceman has a long list of movies including but not limited to: "Willow", "The Doors" and "Tombstone"
7. The officer(Goose) is the RIO (Radar Intercept Officer) radar, communications and navigation.
8. Onboard the ship the Squadron leader would not be smoking a cigar in that operation space.
9. Meg Ryan is my honey. A great overlooked movie with her is with Tom Hanks called "Joe vs the Volcano" She plays 3 parts. HINT HINT
10. Onboard the ship/aircraft all the perspiration is Hollywood (not the pilot). There is AC onboard.
11. The TOP GUN school is no longer located at Miramar near San Diego. It's now at NAS Fallon, NV.
12. In 1991 I was stationed on the USS INDEPENDENCE (CV-62) and they made a movie onboard called "Flight of the Intruder". It was seriously cool. Brad Johnson, Willem DeFoe and Danny Glover. I'm actually in it for a very brief period of time. HINT HINT.
13. Watching/sharing the new "Top Gun Maverick" is a must. The ariel work in that movie makes this one seems like they were practicing. Better yet, it has a plot. (besides Navy recruitment).
Flight of the Intruder is a wonderful book and film. I like it more than Top Gun, mainly because bomber pilots make history....
@@gregmitchell2257 IMVHO "Flight of the intruder" is better, because it has a plot.
Nox has wandered into the “Danger Zone!” 😂
I was the AWWD (Above water warfare director) for the 5th fleet when this was filmed. Basically the air boss for the whole fleet. They filmed it aboard the USS Ranger and Enterprise. Trust me. It was not an easy job to manage all these aircraft all at once!
4:15 About Cougar "freaking out" after the encounter with the enemy planes--- It was *extremely* rare that US pilots engaged with enemy aircraft after the Vietnam War, so Cougar had probably never been in this situation his entire career. Unfortunately you can never truly know how you are going to handle it until you actually go through it.
So for the 1st time in his life, he was in an engagement with a hostile aircraft, and barely got out of it by the skin of his teeth. Cougar lost that engagement quickly and handily by the enemy plane who could have ended Cougar if he wanted to. Cougar couldn't handle the fact he never had a chance and had a panic attack afterwards.
Think of it like a guy who trains in Martial Arts his entire life, but freezes when someone robs him at gunpoint because it's the real thing this time and he's never had a gun shoved in his face. And then has PTSD afterwards.
Loved this movie since childhood. So many great quotes. And somehow the sequel is even better.
🙌🙌
In the military Air Conditioning is NOT for the comfort of pilots, sailors, soldiers, etc. It's to keep the electronics cool(er). No pilot has ever complained that his cockpit air conditioner worked too well.
Hello Eadig!😊 Great to see you finally get to this 80s classic. For "Top Gun: Maverick" they hired the Navy to do the flying with specially mounted cameras on the planes. The results are excellent. For many people the sequel surpasses this film. I have seen the "Blue Angels" in person a few times when I was in the Air Force. They are very impressive!🏆 You should definitely react to the sequel. You won't be disappointed. Great reactions to your very first Top Gun film, Eadig!!!!🎬👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Great job! Navy vet myself.
Thanks for the reaction. I know you have been back for awhile but it is great to have you back on UA-cam again
Aww thanks!!
Tom Cruise was NOT flying anything in this movie but that motorcycle, that one time. But, you have to admit the the directors open credit shot was, and still is, the most epic credit shot ever. Sadly, Tony Scott passed away in 2012(?), he jumped from the Vincent Thomas bridge in Long Beach, CA. Im from San Pedro, the other end of that bridge. It was sad! RIP Tony Scott
Love your breakdown and analysis of how people should treat each other. Two things you need to know.
1) You watched The Blue Angels ... the actual Best-of-the-Best in aerial stunt flying ... something that is NOT applicable to combat fighting. That was a disservice ... to you, because it made the impossible seem kind of normal ... it's not !!!
2) Fighter Pilots have to put losses out of their minds, even when a friend dies, because they still have to continue fighting ... everyone's depending on them as the 1st line of defense. There will be plenty of time to mourn later ... but even in flight training (i.e. Top Gun) school, that's not the time to do that because they need to keep their minds on their very dangerous jobs. It's imperative that they learn that they cannot mourn WHILE they are up there.
Great reaction though !!!
One of the coolest movie intros. Danger Zone!
You now have to wait 36 years to react to TOP GUN Maverick 😂😂
😛
Dear Madam, thanks a lot for your next video and perfect, brilliant reactions! Warm greetings from the Central Europe. God bless YOU. God bless America. Have a great time and take care.
In battle theres no time for cuddly moments.
They used the same formula regarding an enemy who they left as a question mark in the sequel which still works because it leaves the politics out of it. And yes, please react to the sequel. ☺
Top Gun Maverick is a must ✌️
No, it really isn’t lol
6:20 "Guy helping out gets chewed out."
And broke numerous safety regs. In reality, he'd be demoted to the lowest enlisted rank and made to clean restrooms on Diego Garcia until his bad conduct discharge would be processed.
Definitely understand that after seeing how dangerous it can be!
The UA-cam channel 'Legal Eagle' did an episode on this movie, asking "How much legal trouble would Maverick be in if he did this IRL?"
The answer: If in war-time, at least two court-martials with the possibility of the death-penalty.
One of the actual navy pilots in the movie is actually from a town state of Louisiana called Houma Louisiana
Please react to “Top Gun Maverick “! You will ❤ it! A great sequel to the first Top Gun! One of the best movie sequels of all time!
Not a lot of people react to it but you should react to 'Risky Business' 1983. It's a cool film and the one that made Tom Cruise famous.
You’re doing so freaking awesome, keep it up.
Aww thanks!!
I remember when this came out. It was in the later part of the 80's and they were flying Mig 28s. So the enemy was the United Soviet Socialist Republic (USSR). At the time if you said enemy everybody knew it was the Soviets. That was during the cold war. Everybody seemed scared of a nuclear war. They wrote songs about it, made movies about it, and wrote books about it. For a lot of people it was a scary time. So that's why who the enemy was wasn't mentioned. During that time you knew.
Being in the military requires putting of emotions until later. You are told that right away. If they didnt, you would be speaking a foreign language. Therapy is overrated. Lol
You should do "An Officer and a Gentleman", with Richard Gere, it has lots of silhouettes😉
Your awesome eadig ❤
Aww thanks! 🥰
That was the pick up line of the 1986
Jets have rear weaponry to answer your question
What? Lol
You can fire an off bore aim 9, but it can not fire 180 deg behind the jet, also that generation of f14 did not have that capability nor an aim 9 that had the needed maneuverability, i would love to know what rear mounted weaponry the F-14A/B Had, or admit you are making shit up you have no knowledge about
@aviator2252 apparently they removed my response so I'll say it in a more polite way..uhm..no I dont know jack Dempsey about jets my comment in which maybe I should've put in quotation marks was a quote from a buck Roger's movie that a character quoted in a movie on her list..but one thing I do know is how to respond respectfully nobody asked about your knowledge unless you just wanted someone to know..mine was all in fun I'm not a pilot couldn't tell you the wing from tell but doesn't mean in my profession if someone doesn't know something to come off with disrespect....next time tell the young lady you're a pilot don't tell me it is an impressive job but your knowledge you display of that gift nobody asked for nor was it appropriate..that's. Y pg version of response and apologies to young lady who saw my first response I just hate people d I respecting people.
A true 86 classic!
You need to go back to Tony Scott's first movie - The Hunger (1983), a moody vampire movie with Susan Sarandon.
Oh thanks for the recommendation! I’ll check it out 🙂
Second this recommendation. Dont forget a smexy David Bowie.
Bravo.
it was the 'cold war' times, the enemies were the USSR.
I agree with Hollywood lol. 😉
If you liked the original, you're going to like the sequel even more! 😁 Loved your reactions, by the way!
Never been in any kind of organization where you follow the rules or people could get hurt huh?
What a beautiful woman❤
You had a lot of questions and comments regarding Maverick's behavior and if you're curious about what a real military lawyer thinks of the movie, this is a great video from Legal Eagle: ua-cam.com/video/sTx_qZL3tqM/v-deo.htmlsi=WOPnXXv4N7BlndDb
Oh awesome thanks for sharing this!
Hello
Chicks.
Good reaction. You can see the sequel now, and while this first one was pretty good, the new one is way better👍
Nice! I’m excited 😄
Bro it wasn’t even close to being as good as the original! 🤡
[29:13] "We don't see their faces, so we can't connect with them in any way. They're just the enemy."
👉 Welcome to War Propaganda 101.
Dehumanize "the other". You can then justify _anything_ .
Now would be an excellent time to react to "Full Metal Jacket", to see where this leads.
Also, remember, this is how the police view civilians.
The sequel 'Top Gun Maverick' is even better. Top Gun and Tom Cruise are topnotch.
The sequel is not even close to the original lol 🤡
Too short
"It's fun in the moment, but like what are you doing dude?"
I feel that Top Gun is wildly misunderstood. And by that I mean people think Maverick is the hero because the movie follows him, when he is the villain of the movie. Iceman is the voice of reason, laying out to the audience why Maverick is dangerous to his face, but most people just brush off his words of warning.
Maverick disobeyed orders at every opportunity, gets his RIO killed by being reckless, and is only able to save the day in the finale because he abandons his squadron when they needed him most and is unharmed when he finally calms down.
Even in the end, when Iceman pays him a compliment "You can be my wingman any time", he has to throw it back in his face "Bull💩, you can be mine"
I will agree that Iceman is the better pilot in general. I think Maverick is that type of pilot that is more at home in wartime when their instinct and skill are a little more valuable compared to their discipline. Look at a number of WWII pilots for examples of that.
Saying he got Goose killed by being reckless is neither fair nor accurate. He was trailing the lead but Ice could not get the shot and pulled off. The F-14a had a propensity to suffer compressor stalls in various airflow disruptions and a number of pilots both test and duty were lost as a result. Even knowing what to do did not mean you had time to do it or it would work. A flat spin can be induced quite quickly at high angle of attack and excessive yaw in the -14.
What I always found less impressive is the idea that a handful of pilots fresh out of an advanced training program are rushed halfway around the world to fly air cover for a disabled ship, as if the Big E didn't have multiple fighter wings of skilled pilots of her own to deal with the situation.
@@chrismaverick9828 Instead of covering Iceman at a distance *like he should have *like Goose was telling him to, Maverick jockied up behind Iceman to try and get a shot...
He never should have been close enough to catch Iceman's jet wash in the first place.
100% preventable and Maverick's fault.
@@chrismaverick9828 That bothered me too. I saw that they returned to their carrier which is fine (and brought additional pilots Iceman and Hollywood), but its not like the carrier was void of any more pilots. Also the situation they were referring to was already taking place while Maverick, Iceman, etc were at graduation. I doubt they contacted the enemy to schedule the battle at a later date. It all boils down to "Hollywood reasons."
These guys don't have the luxury of taking time to explore and discuss their feelings - they wouldn't anyway - alpha males doing a job even many other alpha males couldn't do - they're not supposed to let emotions get in the way (or even admit they have them - on the job)
Yes, it can get a bit cheeezy, but that was actually part of the fun. This wasn't meant to be anything other than what it was - lots of hot guys, testosterone and a tragic backstory for our hero to overcome. It was a lot of fun and even those of us who sneered at it back in the day have a fondness for it.
Way to try to marginalize one of the greatest movies ever. 40 years later, and it still stands the test of time! 🤡
While assessing what the movie was mean to be, you left out one major aspect: the visuals.
