The guy making the sound effects is Michael Winslow. He's more iconic in the Police Academy series where he started showing off his sound talents. He quit the acting business to support his family like Rick Moranis (Dark Helmet) did for his. Winslow then participated in America's Got Talent with his sound stuff. A lot of people recognized him off the bat, including Simon.
My dad loved Michael Winslow, and he introduced me to Police Academy as well as Mel Brooks. He didn’t let me see Blazing Saddles until I was 17 😆, but I was curious about it from Robin Hood Men in Tights. And I can say with honour that I have continued my own quest into comedy and discovered the Marx Brothers on my own.
Not sure why she is not posting on YT anymore, but I noticed a small amount of more recent activity on her Letterboxd link in the description. I hope she comes back soon.
Mel Brooks was a genius, he doesnt break the 4th wall, he shatters it lol. Michael Winslow the guy that did those sound effects is one of a kind, he really hit it big in police academy. I just love the fact you couldn't stop smiling lol 😆
8:34 "It's kind of a lot more slower-paced than I expected, but I like it. It gives us a little bit of time to, like, digest what we're seeing and hearing." That used to be the case a lot more with movies.
I am extremely happy you kept the Kafka joke in, not many people get it or leave it in. Also, your laugh had me smiling with you the entire reaction! Great job and thank you!
I've seen a lot of reactions to this movie and this has to be my favorite. Most other reactors don't understand all of the references or fully appreciate the humor. You did both... and sang the theme to The Transformers. Bravo! 👏 BTW, there's another reactor, Jay Bond, who recently mentioned in a comment that you're one of his three favorite fellow reactors because you're "chill" (as in genuine and not overly dramatic). Just thought you might like hearing that.
One of the funny parts is how they pushed the merch in the movie but a deal was made with George Lucas that he wouldn't sue for copyright infringement but Brooks couldn't sell any merch so of course Mel went right over the top with it in the movie but there wasn't a single piece to found in the real world. I hope the film crew or actors were able to steal some of the merch created for the movie because it would be worth a fortune now.
The deal was actually that mel got to borrow Lucas arts wfx and models from the star wars for free under the condition of there would be no merch from spaceballs. But Mel Brooks is mel Brooks, so he made it into a huge gagtheme instead. And George Lucas loved it.
Thank you Rick Moranis, for sharing some of your life with us and making our childhoods that much more special. Ghostbusters, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids and on and on. That wasn't meant to sound like an obituary... 👀
You are spot on with your hunch about the twins being in a commercial: see e.g. 1991 - Double Your Pleasure with Doublemint Gum. The other guy you asked about with the sound effects is none other than the brilliant "man of 10000 sound effects" Michael Winslow, most famous for staring in the Police Academy movies.
There's an old '80s cartoon where a construction worker finds a frog who sings but every time somebody else is around the Frog won't sing that's where the Aliens parody comes from
Honestly, it's the same for me every time my parents misplaced something and asked me if I found it is say I ain't found Spaceballs because I couldn't say the actual word and they would laugh and say we get it.
Doublemint Gum had commercials featuring identical twins and the ads were inescapable, so everybody would have been familiar with the joke. They were so well known that David Letterman's Top-10 Rejected Ad Campaigns included "Bob Guccione and the Doublemint Triplets in a Hot Tub."
The Tesla model S Plaid is named after "They've gone to plaid" moment in this movie, it's their fastest model. They also have a "ludicrous speed" setting on all their cars.
The gum comment with the twins was referring to the Double mint gum commercials back in the day. Tesla cars have the Ludacris speed option because of this movie, and I heard they have a Plaid speed coming soon? You should do History of the World Pt. 1 by Mel Broooks next.
Also, when Mel Brooks contacted George Lucas to make a Star Wars spoof the only stipulation was that there be no merchandise to compete with Star Wars merch so that is what that part in the movie is about. You couldn't really get any merch for Space Balls.
2:20 No but there's a country in Europe where *no one* was surprised by the big twist in Star Wars because Darth Vadar means 'dark _father.'_ I believe it was in Dutch but I could have that wrong. (and I'm too lazy to check)
Yeah, "Wrigley's Double Mint Gum" was a popular product from I guess the '80s-'90s, back when gum came in 'sticks' (flat strips, bought in packs of 5 or 20).
There is no official Spaceballs merchandise, as part of Mel's deal with George Lucas for the rights to parody Star Wars. So he mocks George ruthlessly in the merchandising scene (if you don't know, GL made his fortune off merchandising Star Wars because Fox gave him the merchandising rights in lieu of pay). And the alien's song and dance is from an old Warner Bros cartoon called One Froggy Evening.
Rick Moranis & John Candy both came from SCTV : Second City from a Canadian comedy sketch show back in the days . Also : History Of The World Part 1 - The Producers - Life Stinks . All by Mel Brooks . And he also produced " The Elephant Man " under another name. In that movie Anthony Hopkins was in it and based on a true story. Bill Pullman was also in a horror movie called " The Serpent And The Rainbow ".
Chapter 11 is also used when someone files for bankruptcy, and the song the chestburster sang is from "One Froggy Evening", a Looney Tunes short where Michigan J. Frog keeps performing vaudeville numbers for a construction worker... but whenever he tries showcasing the frog's act to *anyone* else, it immediately reverts to being a regular frog. Though one thing I realized - depending on how many uncles Lone Starr had, he and Dark Helmet may have been roommates! "I am your father's brother's nephew's cousin's former roommate", after all!
15:57 "All the jokes are just _woven in_ to all the conversations as if it's just, like, whatever, and nobody _reacts_ to it." And that _last_ part makes it even _funnier, doesn't_ it? There's something totally absurd going on and everyone reacts like it's normal, and that makes it _ten times_ as absurd. This, I've noticed, is an enduring element of satire. You _really_ want to make your audience laugh, make your whole movie like _this._ There's this skit from the _Monty Python_ sketch comedy show called _Ministry of Silly Walks,_ the main character of which, every time he walks anywhere, employs this totally absurd walk. You _might_ suspect he's drunk or crazy. What makes it _funny_ is that, from the waste up, he carries himself like a self-respecting English gentleman. The expression on his face is _just_ the kind of expression you would expect from someone who's off to a day at the office. "Keep calm and carry on... and have a silly _walk."_
8:00 That is the incredibly talented Micheal Winslow. He was in a few things but two big things, Spaceballs (obviously) and the Police Squad movie series. After that he had kids and quit acting to focus on his family. (actually the guy who played Dark Helmet is similar. He is mostly known for Spaceballs and 'Honey I Shrunk The Kids.' He ALSO stopped acting to focus on his family) Micheal Winslow recently started doing standup after his kids pointed out that while it was awesome he stopped for them, they're all grown up now and he can and should get back in the game.
8:41 "You thought you could outwit the imperious forces of Planet Spaceball. Well, you were _wrong."_ 😆 Ha! I don't know _how_ many times I've seen this movie, but I just now caught this joke for the _first time._ See, he's not referring to _imperial_ forces. He's referring to _imperious_ forces; _overbearing, domineering, haughty_ forces.
Okay, folks already covered John Hurt, merchandising, One Froggy Evening, and even The Wizard of Oz. I would like to point out that the Dink Dinks were doing a rendition of the march from Bridge on the River Kwai. Also, to expand, the trooper who "haven't found shit" was Tim Russ, who later played Vulcan Tuvok on Star Trek Voyager and had a guest appearance on The Orville along with many other roles. Great reaction, lots of fun and you caught a LOT of the references.
Ohhhh man, made some dinner, sit down for some UA-cam... And see my UA-cam Crush doing one of the best comedies EVER???? What a friggin great Saturday!!!!
The alien chest burster singing "Hello My Baby" is a reference to an old Warner Bros cartoon where a construction worker finds a frog that performs the song for him but not anyone he tries to show it to.
I just noticed for the first time. After colonel sanders is named theres a sergeant ricco. Didnt get that refrence till now as ricco is from starship troopers.
It's funny because Spaceballs had no merchandising dealer would only let them make this movie spoof about Star wars but he said they could sell no merchandise
The robot guy with Pizza the Hut was Max Headroom Twins used to advertise Doublemint gum. The alien was doing Michigan J Frog from the Warner Bothers cartoons.
7:34 Michael Winslow is known for his sound effects and voices. He is most famous for his role in Police Academy as Jones AKA Moter mouth Jones 13:00 The Wizard of OZ.
To "give someone the raspberry" is to stick your tongue out and make a fart sound. Mel Brooks does often play a character in charge. It's good to be the king.
"Giving the raspberry" is an old Vaudeville comedy term...when an audience didn't like the act, they's stick out their tongues and blow, to make a flatulent sound, as is still popular today. That's called a raspberry. I remember watching an old "Little Rascals" short, where doing that on film was considered too obscene, so instead they just had the kid throw a fist across his chest and say "Aw, raspberries!"
Just had to mention first and foremost that I LOVED your reaction to this movie. Especially how you got the jokes that were laid out. This is by far my favourite movie of all time and I love it when other people experience it for the first time and also enjoy it.
The alien singing with the top hat and cane was reference to Warner Bros. Looney Tunes singing frog singing the same song. Love your reactions. honest and fun. I think you would like High Anxiety. It's Mel Brooks tribute to Alfred Hitchcock movies.
I got so much joy watching you laugh at this silly movie. I saw this movie as a kid and even to this day, when something is out of order, I still say to myself “Fuck! Even in the future, nothing works.”
Same! That's one of those movie quotes that I always find myself saying. Another one is, "You have to know these things when you're king, you know." Sadly, the reference is lost on most people.
I wonder if Dark Helmet's voice was inspired by the original on-set voice of David Prowse, who physically played Vader but was dubbed with James Earl Jones.
Darth Vader is quite close to "dark father" in several north European/slavic languages. John Candy's costume had an off-screen stagehand controlling it. So when Barf tells the waitress "it.has a mind of its own", that was true. A secind stagehand controlled the ears. Since it took three people to make Jabba work for Lucas, Brooks wanted it to take three people to make Barf work.
The twins, in case it hasn't been said already, were the Doublemint Twins. known for selfsame gum commercial pretty famously back in the 70s-early 80s timeframe.
This movie is so much fun! I love seeing you laughing at all the jokes! I remember watching this as a kid in the 1980s. When my mom heard the guy say, "Oh shit! Not that!" before getting his nuts Schwartzed, she exclaimed in her Filipina accent, "What?! They don't say that on Endor!" Hahaha...
I've seen Spaceballs 1,000 times but gladly watched again just to see Eadig's pretty face, hear her melodic voice and girlish laugh. Now I see how much Yiddish she's picked up and am impressed.
Should check out Mel Brooks's original 60's movie of The Producers, Young Frankenstein, High Anxiety, History of the World, part 1, Robin Hood: Men in Tights & Dracula: Dead & Loving It.
lol man you're so fun, i love your reactions! subbed :) edit: also it would be sick if you reacted to Tommy Boy with Chris Farley, one of the greatest comedic actors of all time
Hope you are okay
"We aint found shit" has been lodged in a corner of my brain since the 80s and every time I think of it I still chuckle. Great reaction.
But why does the black guy have a pick? 😂😂😂😂
If you are a Star Trek fan the guy that says that line is Tim Russ who plays Commander Tuvok on Star Trek Voyager
😂😂😂😂😂
Hellooooooo.... are you there?
I hope she's ok. No reactions in seven months. I liked her.
Moranis quit because he's a self-important prick who thinks himself better than the characters he was expected to play
Awesome
Now I need to check to see a clip from the show. Thanks for letting me know.
@@eskreskao he's still got it is all I can say.

And I can say with honour that I have continued my own quest into comedy and discovered the Marx Brothers on my own.
The fact they actually got John Hurt for the Alien bit makes it even funnier

Mel Brooks was a genius, he doesnt break the 4th wall, he shatters it lol. Michael Winslow the guy that did those sound effects is one of a kind, he really hit it big in police academy. I just love the fact you couldn't stop smiling lol 😆
Mel Brooks is still alive, 96 years old - thus he IS a genius. Right?

The Dolls part was ad-libbed by Rick. And it was brilliant.
The maid was holding the handle to the vacuum. We know where your mind was!
Right where I like it
6:27 Yes, the Doublemint gum commercials always had twins.
I hope you didn't abandon your channel.

"One Froggy Evening" is/was a 1955 short: ua-cam.com/video/80UjzxfNugs/v-deo.html
Maybe you saw it in the 80's, but as Otokichi pointed out, it's much older than that
I simply love your laugh. Fantastic. Here for it.
The sound effects guy was Michael Winslow. If you like him, he had a bigger role in the first couple of 'Police Academy' movies.
Merry Christmas to Nox So Subtle
"We ain't found shit" never fails to make me laugh.

I also wonder if this inspired Musk's "flamethrower".
I literally just realized they got John Hurt for the Alien reference.
Always enjoy watching your reaction to these classics. I used to love showing new friends movies like this and seeing their reactions.
The gum comment with the twins was referring to the Double mint gum commercials back in the day. Tesla cars have the Ludacris speed option because of this movie, and I heard they have a Plaid speed coming soon? You should do History of the World Pt. 1 by Mel Broooks next.

The stunt doubles bit was so inspired. I love movies that break the 4th wall 😂
Stephen Tobolowsky's delivery of "You idiots! You've captured their stunt doubles!" is simply fantastic.
"Spaceballs": Mel Brooks did to Space Operas what he'd done to the Hollywood Western with "Blazing Saddles" (1974).
"Spaceballs"?!! Oh shit, there goes the planet!
Fun reaction yet again! Thanks!👍
