I have to say, this demo impressed me. Not so much the Work Sharp, but your presentation and production quality in editing. Also, a paring knife is a perfect choice for a first knife, and seems well suited to this tool's capabilities. Cudos!
Thank you very much!! That means a lot!
So I just got my blade grinding attachment today and I came back to this for a refresher! Great video my friend!
finally there's reviews of this thing being made...I took a chance when I bought mine as there wasn't any reviews out there. I absolutely love it, I only use it now, it is so much easier to use, yields far better results, and more versatile.
I hated how the normal attachment would always grind a high bevel. with this I can easily match a factory bevel instead of reprofiling. you can easily touch up convex grind, or a scandi-vex. you can also easily thin out an edge on an overly thick knife or create a micro bevel with ease..
again I absolutely love this machine, and get hair whittling results in minutes. everyone with a ko work sharp should have one.
+bob3326 Yep, I agree. This attachment takes the KO to a whole new level. The Regular KO still has it's place (mainly higher convex grinds) imo but this grinder does take over a lot of the finer work for sure. No matter how hard I've tried the KO will not leave the secondary bevel flat; it always convexes it and I really like that that with this, I can keep that secondary right where I want it. I really think these should be a package deal with the KO. Thanks for the feedback and discussion Bob!
Have you tried sharpening a scandi using the 90° platform? That's about the only thing I haven't tried sharpening with this set up..
I watched pm101's video using this machine, but the way he says to sharpen a scandi on it will turn it into a scandi-vex and ruin a zero scandi. funny thou as he recommended not using the regular sharpening head bc it'll create a convex, but then created one with the grinder.
I was on the edge whether or not to pull the trigger on buying one, but this sealed the deal. Great demo.
Love your first knife -- and especially the Micarta. All is in the eye of the beholder, I guess.
Nicely done! I love how versatile your videos are, from gear reviews to cooking to primitive skills and now blade grinding. Keep up the great work!
+SurvivoTek Thanks Jude, I appreciate that a lot man!
As always you do go that extra mile to show us how good or bad a product is. Pleasure to watch!!!
+A J Taylor Thanks AJ, I appreciate that!
I just finally got around to getting this attachment to my KO Worksharp...I love it, and watching your video makes me love it even more! Thanks so much for sharing, and giving me so many ideas! ;) BTW, I think your first attempt at making a knife turned out really well. A very useful, solid blade it appears to me. Nice work and thanks for the ideas!!
Thank you again, Rick, I appreciate it! I think you'll find the Blade Grinding attachment a very useful tool. I use it all the time.
You video just sold me. Was on the fence between this and a harbor freight belt sander.
i have a work sharp and i now have a belt grinder but if i had seen this earlier man i would have gone for it! yet another great review!
+doomedtroll A regular belt sander definitely has it's place. I think a belt sander for the rough work would be easier but for the finer work this would likely do better. If that makes sense. But then I can't say for sure. My belt sander isn't much bigger then this lol Thanks!
Way to set the bar high Joe ;-). Now I have to rethink my video of sharpening my lawnmower blade
+Survival On Purpose LOL I almost included a lawnmower blade lol Glad I didn't. Thanks Bryan!
I'm glad you left me something to do ;-)
+Survival On Purpose Anything I can do to help my friend ;)
instablaster.
it turned out really nice I'm glad you showed the work sharp I never knew what they look like but I would hear about them
I definitely need one
+84neilbone I honestly don't think you'd regret it. Well. You might regret the sudden bill in O1 tool steel stock lol
I just purchased the grinding attachment, thanks for the tips, live long and take good care of you family
I am going to get one of these next month, I can't wait to try my hand at knife making.
+kantill It's addictive....quick!
Nice video review friend. I just purchased the KO sharpener along with all the attachments. I look forward to all my edges being razor sharp. Thanks again!!
Thanks. I just ordered that tool, and your vid gives me the confidence to go ahead and indulge in some improvements. Keep up the good work.
Awesome! Thanks for letting me know. Go slow and get used to it and you and it can do some great things! Be safe and have fun!
Taking it to a new level brother. Great video.
+Wingman115 Thanks Jon!
+Feral Woodcraft Thank you for great instruction. I just bought one, and used this for instruction on how to use it. Meager instruction came with the blade grinding attachment. Thanks again!
+Dean Antilla Ditto with Bill K on the music review. Have you ever listened to classical? Some new classical that's pretty cool: into the trees by Zoe Keating. Just a suggestion, ha ha.
Haha, thanks! Yes, I am a fan of "classical" classical, if that makes sense. Unfortunately I am limited to what UA-cam has in their music library. I've been dinged a couple times by using free domain music from elsewhere and then the artists change their mind so then I am breaching copyright laws so I just stick with music straight from UA-cam. I wanted a more "rock" type tone so that's what I went with.
Anyway, thanks, I am stoked you found it helpful.
+Feral Woodcraft Yes, of course it makes sense! Your clip was fine, and well made, I might add. I thought you did a great job! Thank you. Say, I used mine today sharpening knives, and some of the belts just barely fit on, a little short, I thought, a struggle to get those on. Others fit well, have you run into that?
Awesome video I'm hoping you have a video coming up on your heat treat oven/ furnace set up looks really cool.
+Popacan ofNOS I will do it! I've made some changes to make it more efficient then what you see here but I'll go over that as well. Thanks!
good review. thanks for sharing. I haven't seen many reviews on it so didn't really know what all it was capable of.
+Michael Laird Thanks Michael. I was aiming to highlight the potential of this tool. Someone with more skill and experience I think could come up with a really professional quality knife with it.
Yeah I think so to. At least it gives us knife guys options to play around with lol.
You know it's going to be a good video when you drop "a plethora" in the first minute! EL GUAPO!!!!!
+CoastalBackWoods I have an odd vocabulary at times, I admit it. LOL Thanks!
Great video as always, Joe! I've been thinking about picking up the KO model of the WorkSharp and the blade grinder attachment for just this purpose.
It's expensive, but nowhere near as much as an actual full size belt grinder lol. Can't wait to see how your skills progress in making knives.
+kpw528 Oh man, it's addictive and I learn something new every time I make one (I am on #4 I believe). You can't go wrong with either the KO or this in my opinion. Thanks!
Epic review brother! Those knives are fantastic.
+Blue Mountain Bushcraft and Outdoors Thanks Mike!! I really appreciate it. The second one turned out fairly well imo...but the first....fugly man. just fugly.
Great job. I am in the midst of a lengthy process of profiling a blade using the Gough blade grinding jig. It is a slow process. I think I will invest in a small belt grinder for my next knife project.
Impressive! You did a hellofa good job making your second knife ever. I wish you went into a little detail about your homemade forge. I think it's a neat trick to build one from bricks and a propane torch from the hardware store. I'm looking forward to seeing you complete the knife. Was that an old circular saw blade you used for the blank? Thanks
just bought this setup. it really is bad ass
done a great job on both knives brother well done
+heath conley Thanks! I appreciate that! I need to kick the forge back up, it's been too long.
Interesting device. Seems useful for other hobbies as well.
+TheAnnoyingThingOutdoors Yep, I would agree. Just as a point of reference, there was 39GB (about 4 and a half hours) of film recorded for this video 3 to 5 minute clips at a time. There is so much I didn't include in this video. Axes, lawnmower blades, wood projects, cleaning up rust, etc. It's pretty versatile. Thanks!
Nice video - easy to follow. Thanks!
Awesome demo!
I've saved up enough reward points with my local outfitter to get the Ken Onion Work Sharp, I think that I'll pay the extra for the Blade Grinding Attachment. I've been trying to put an even 90 degree spine on my Habilis SRT by hand, this would speed up and make the spine an accurate 90 degree.
great video. nice to see people making knifes with it.
That 1st knife u made is a nice little very functional knife I'd be very pleased if that was my 1st
+Radical Rob Thanks Rob, I appreciate that it. It is still in use in the kitchen even if it is an ugly duckling lol
I have several knives to sharpen, a couple of Bokers, an ontario and spiderco, looking into a sharpener to handle all. Many filet knives as well
What a sweet machine :) I´we been using traditional stones but maybe this is worth looking into.
- Martin
+NorwegianWoods For touch ups and regular maintenance, I would (and still do) use regular stones. For reprofiling, fixing chips or nicks, this comes in soo handy. Thanks!
Pretty cool sharpener
+The_kid Thanks for watching!
i have really been thinking about getting one of those things! ! great video
+keifer225948 Thanks! I use this attachment quite a bit more then I do the regular Ken Onion attachment
Great Job, Brother Joe, I am wanting this myself cause I want to try to make a knife for myself. and test the Ken onion to see what kind of abuse it will take. hopefully Soon I can get one to put a good punishing on it Myself.
+Galen Long Thanks Galen. Knife making is so addictive, be careful! ha ha
I know I have been watching allot of video's on the subject, and am getting the bug.
It's an easy bug to get!
Great review man.
That’s a fantastic video great work mate.
Haven't tried MAKING one yet. Hmm...
+PREPAREDMIND101 lol, give it a whirl bro. Fair warning, it's addictive ;)
@@feralwoodcraft great review but the machine is not designed to shape metal. Are you sure it can handle it ?
@@jcdupuy4809 I've made probably 10 knives with it over the years and will be making one over the next week or so for my daughter's Birthday coming up. It handles it just fine. Granted, I wouldn't make a 10 inch bowie with it...
great video and review brother love the blade grinding attachment myself :-)
Cool video, and knife, will this attachment fit the original Worksharp or just the Ken Onion? BTW, I don't own either and this may make up my mind on which one to buy, because I dont want the original if this attachment won't work on it. Thanks a lot.
+JJw650 jones It only fits on the Ken Onion model. If you get one, let me know what you think. Thanks!
F.W.K.W.
Feral Woodcraft Knife Works, sounds pretty good. I'll be looking forward to it.
Can you do more knife making videos on the work sharp?
I can't wait to see the next reviewer. Who are you sending this one to?
+Mick Bator I am not sure. Worksharp sent 1 to everyone who had a Ken Onion model. Follow this on www.thegauntlet.tv to see the next one. Thanks for watching!
Great music too
Awesome video! This really helps my buying decision.
Did you stall the motor at all when grinding? How hard were you able to press into the belt? Did the motor seem to get hot?
Not a bit. Obviously you can tell when there is a load on it but it handles it very well. As to getting hot, not that I noticed but I wasn't specifically paying attention. More then likely I would have noticed if it were as the handle was pointed away from me so I have to grab the motor housing to turn it off.
Nice video!!! The ferro rod you used threw great sparks. Could you tell me where you got it. Thank you
Donald
I am pretty sure I got that one from firesteel.com. If not there then I got it from Ben's Back Woods. Thanks Donald!
that's awesome! I've really wanted to make some knives but the huge bevel grinder is exspensive! but this is way less. great knife to
Thanks bud!
So when can I put my order in for a Feral Woodcraft Signature Knife By Joe ? I would absolutely love to own a knife that was designed and made by you.
Instead of relying on a steady hand to maintain the angle for your edge make a free standing plate that you place near the belt. From there you can keep a precise angle.
+Brian Park That wouldn't have highlighted the guides and provided angles WorkSharp has included into their device. When I do this on my bigger belt sander, I do use angled guides to remove my "whoopsies" lol Thanks Brian!
Have you done bevels using this attachment? If so, how easy or difficult it is ?
Great video!! Have you tried to see if there are lower grit belts for profiling? You may find it a lot easier going to something lower than 120 for that job👌
This is a great tool! Great review too! Cheers, Marc
+Scouting Free I appreciate it Marc. Out of curiosity, are these available on your side of the pond?
Feral Woodcraft
To be honest I guess they were promoted in on of these homeshopping channels on TV. But you can get them here via Böker (knife manufacturer) for 126,00 Euros.
LOL Home shopping channel? Now that is funny! Cool though. Thanks man, I hope you have a great day!
Excellent video. On my 4th blade. Oh, where did you get the flint rod/size?
so there is room to put a piece of material between the paten and the belt if you want to add a sacrificial layer? Is the paten fixed?
Good job..
Any chance the motor is still running? Would you buy this again? I wish the made the attachment for the v2.
It dosen't seem like the red tension clamp dosen't doe anything but go left or right. How do you use it to adjust?
is that a note 3 with a zero lemon battery in the background?
harbor freight sells the 1x30 belt sander with 40 up to at least 4000 grit belts for bevels and shaping it is much better and cheaper it also is good for sharpening
Very cool
Fun! Have you figured how to sharpen flat grinds with 20 degree secondary?
Outstanding!
+Steven Boyd Thanks Steven.
When your sharpening doing take the top of the blade past halfway across the belt kr you run the risk of rounding the tip
great video man--thanks for taking the time
Thanks Anthony!
Great job, man!
Good review Joe !! Do you think it will last pushing it hard enough making knives as opposed to just sharpening them ?
We need to get together one of these days
+BigUglyOne Yes we do Grant. Are you still working at the same place with the same schedule?
I don't think you could open up a knife making shop with it but I've made 4 with it at this point and it's showing no signs of wearing out. So I would say for a small time hobbiest that does it every once in a while but for someone more serious, probably not. Thanks man!
+Feral Woodcraft Yup, I still work there. If you're up this way maybe we could catch lunch.
Hey, Did you ever get a forge and anvil set up ? If so, I have some semi truck leaf spring for you to play with LOL
BTW, great job on the editing... pretty damn professional :)
Sold me on the grinder / attachment. Thanks for sharing. (However, the background music was horrendous.)
Old video I know but.... I recieved this attachment today for sharpening axes, tomahawks, hatchets and such. Did I make the wrong purchase? Should I get a different attachment?
Liam Ireland Not at all. I've refurbished several axes and customized many machete grind angles with this attachment. In my opinion, you made an excellent purchase :)
Feral Woodcraft Thank you kindly not just for responding on an old video but quickly! I talk a big game with the guys but I'm not skilled/knowledgeable enough to reprofile edges (yet I hope). Will this work for mere sharpening? Thank you my friend!
Liam Ireland My pleasure sir. Yes, it works great for sharpening. I would suggest you practice in a blade/axe or two that you don't care about. Free hand with an electric sander can get out of hand quick if you're not careful ;)
Thank you Joe! I planned on practicing on old beaters anyway like I did when I purchased the base Ken onion worksharp. I have decent hands but get slightly (very just want to sound manly) with a regular bench grinder. You made me feel better with my expensive (for me) purchase and I thank you dearly! God bless you and your family brother!
what kind of ferro rod you using? great video by the way
I think that was from Firesteel.com. I filmed that a long time ago though. Thanks!
Thanks for the video
+Eat Carbs Thanks for watching Mark!
WTF was the sparky thing lol. I also want to do Dumbledore tricks lol. BTW nice vid
How long did those belts last you for?
Two minutes of making out of 15:39? It looked like you were making a Scandi, yet the heat treated knife was fully flat ground. How did you do a flat grind with the attachment?
+Scott Selby it's actually pretty close to a full height convex. That said, you can easly do a flat if you want. And I didn't time the break down. It's pretty clear the focus is in the tool and what it can do, not the entire process.
Liked the video, loved the demo...the music, not so much.
+Bill K. Thanks Bill! Yeah, I decided to branch out and get kinda rocky on this one. It just seemed fitting for some reason. Anyway, sorry you didn't like it but I do appreciate you watching and for taking the time give some feedback, I am grateful.
I loved the music. Different strokes.
Cool video I've been wanting to buy one. Did you do you own heat treat or send out?
what did u use to cut out the blade blank?
An angle grinder. Not the cleanest job, I know lol Thanks!
Sweet!
Thumbs up, but could have done without the music. I'd rather hear how the tool is working itself versus a music overlay.
I have the standard Worksharp system. I opted not to get the Ken Onion because of some issues with the height of the guides for thicker stock. (Great explanation offered around the 5:40 mark in this video ua-cam.com/video/shx_H58jX3w/v-deo.html.) I like the system and use it frequently. My real objection to this tool is the process where you lay it flat on the reference block, and then "lift it and hold it at the exact same angle while sharpening." Let's face it, if most of us could do that, we wouldn't need the system.
It seems that it wouldn't be too difficult for them to offer an optional base or attachment that achieves this. For putting an edge on blanks, I still set the initial bevel on a jig for my belt grinder, then move to the Worksharp for finishing. I guess everyone has their own system.
People have a good ability or a knack at holding things in a horizontal position. Ever watch a food server bringing you your drinks, a coffee or a beer? It's not as difficult as you think. I was under the same impression until I tried it.
does anyone know if I can make a balisong with this grinder and attachment
Well that is a bit beyond my skill level but I am sure someone who knows what they are doing probably could. Thanks Dillon
Well crap! I just got a WSKO for Christmas. Guess I need to add one of these now..... LOL!dcr
+Dcr 72104 haha! Sorry bud but I sincerely don't think you'll regret it. I use this attachment more then I do the regular Ken Onion Attachment...exponentially.
Fortunately, my birthday is only 7 weeks away........dcr
tried the leather belt yet brother?
+Modernbushcraft Not yet lol
+Feral Woodcraft ok dont try it it sucks big time
Is that a nuclear shelter in the background? :)
You're probably seeing my kid's trampoline through the patch of trees.
What fire stick was that?
+Florida Freedivers I made the handle but the rod is one from Firesteel.com. I think it's what they call the Armageddon. Thanks for watching!
+Feral Woodcraft thanks for your quick reply
You betcha. I try to answer as fast as I can. Sometimes it takes a day or two but I aim for ASAP. Thanks again!
+Feral Woodcraft if you get a chance check out my page facebook.com/groups/182693478785154/
Just joined, thanks for the invite bud.
Anyone else notice the music being A Lot louder than the parts where he is speaking?
Yep! Major difference. I really, really wish I wasn't wearing headphones.
Огниво просто огонь !)))
ive blown up 2 making a knife on this machine.
you know what I thought that thing was just a gimmic but you might have changed my mind
+Adventure Time Outdoors It has loads of potential. I mean, you're not going to start up a knife making business with it but for a hobbyist, it's serious tool.
Music loud enough?
I try to cater to all my friend. I am sorry it was too loud.
great video...now gives me more ideas ...I have it but still haven't used..now after watching ur video I have an itch to buy some metal stock..lol
question gave u had the chance to use any of the aftermarket belts...would something like a 26 grit ceramic belt be useful in making a knife from stock??
check out econoway.com I think that's the site I had seen.
again great video..ty for putting in the time
I have seen the official video for this system and your version does not have the additional guides that allow you to do a no brainer, just run the knives at the angle and sharpen it. There was no need to use the guides and then hold it to the belt. Did some of the parts go missing as part of the Gauntlet? Here is a video that shows the guides. ua-cam.com/video/4I4sGdIE27Y/v-deo.html
Hey Joe. That's interesting. That's all that came with it on mine and the instruction set also outlined it's use how I've been using it. I'll watch that video and see where things aren't lining up. Thanks for letting me know! If there is an easier more precise way to do it, then I'm all for it :)
+Joe Feser Hey Joe, I checked out that video and that is just part of the tool I was using in this video. The motor behind it is the video you shared, but the actual tool I was using is an attachment to it. There are no guides with this one aside from the 90 degree shelves. Thanks again!
Feral Woodcraft Cool man. Yeah I don't have a steady hand so I would use the guide that has the angle built in. Looking at getting a few kitchen knives this weekend.
I like to use Ballistol as a lube for about everything in my shop. It's great on leather strops and any leather except rough out leather. Check it out at Ballistol.com .
I've learned through bitter experience that giving your wife knives for her birthday puts you on the road to disaster.
+joe McGee LOL! Hmmm...Well, I bought her an electric pressure cooker that she's been wanting too...
...anyone else just naturally do a safety squint when he started to grind?
Love the channel! I shouldn't sub though. I can't afford all those Bark River knives. But I did🤦♂️
The work sharp seems extremely underpowered to be used to make knives
It's for sharpening knives
That knife is never gonna work, you should make a utility blade that will cut rope but not paper. :)
+Gary Lawson I know. I aspire to be the master himself.
You title the video "Making a Knife" and yet the whole video is on sharpening? Not really Kosher sport.
Scott Selby apparently you didn't watch the whole video :)
