Neil was referred to as "Your favorite drummer's favorite drummer". He also wrote the lyrics for Rush's songs too, which is overlooked by most. R.I.P. Neil Peart.
"overlooked by most? Who is "most"? DO you know "most" Rush fans? Actually the Rush fans from the 70's or early 80's that grew up with them had LPs with lyrics and liner notes and we read every word on them. That was a big part of enjoying an album. Maybe your music comes stripped down from a digital source. Neil wrote most of the lyrics but not all - certainly nothing on their first album.
@@blacklight4460 In general though, most of the early Rush fans focus 95% on the music and less on the lyrics - as evidenced by them being very vocal about abandoning the guys throughout most of the 80's and dissing the synth era. If they were to listen to the lyrics equally, they would appreciate lines like "sometimes our big splashes, are just ripples in the pool" or "Spirits fly on dangerous missions , imaginations on fire" just as much as Alex's solo in La Villa, or Geddy's vocals in 2112.
@@dilligaf6544 You got a problem dude? "Most people in general" have still never heard of them. Rush was panned by mainstream music critics for many years because they didn't "fit the mold". But you knew that, right? Why did it take so long to get Rush into the R&R Hall of Fame?
@Marc Poindexter Right on! Same here - I had heard them here and there but didn't really know who they were until the Trees hit the airwaves in '78. Went out an bought the Hemispheres album and the rest soon after.
You should watch the Hall of Fame induction ceremony with the late, Taylor Hawkins and Dave Grohl inducting RUSH finally into the Hall of Fame epic induction
Neil rode a motorcycle by himself, following the tour…. So he could enjoy the country and reflect. He wasn’t just the greatest drummer of our time…. He was a scholar…. An author…. Wrote just about all the Rush lyrics…. He was a deep thinker…. A special Human being. The world lost a really special one when he passed. RIP Neil
He was the hope for the peculiar guy trying (and in his case, succeeding) to make it in this world and find a way to fit in. As geniuses often appear, he always had that quirky, high-intellect demeanor. Could he really fit in? The bigger question asked was, Did he make an impact? For me, he did and still does. I still miss him as I loyally play my Rush tunes.
The saying was that most drummers paid attention to the metronome but that the metronome paid attention to Peart. RIP good sir, you were and are an inspiration.
This is why he was voted best drummer three years in a row, in the fourth year he asked people not to vote for him, as he said he became to self conscious of any little mistake he was making, which made his mind scream fake. you don't deserve the right to be number one, a very humble guy to be sure. He certainly made me want to better my drum playing.
Almost forgot: Don’t feel bad about not knowing who Neil Peart was. I’m sure most Rush fans will agree: Rush has been criminally under appreciated for YEARS. It’s a low down dirty shame that these 3 exceptionally talented musicians had been overlooked by Rock N Roll Hall of Fame for so many years, despite earning 50+ gold, platinum and double platinum records over the past 47 years. They were only inducted (after releasing their last studio album) in 2013, nearly 40 years after the release of their first album.
@@19DrumFreak89 I hear you, but among the folks with whom I frequently socialize, none can name a single member of Rush?! Personally, I easily consider Lifeson to be one of the best guitarists I’ve ever listened to. I have several copies of “Victor” (Lifeson’s solo project from 90’s) where he just cuts loose, something not often heard with Rush? I’d encourage all Rush fans to check out both Victor and Lee’s solo album called “My Favorite Headache” from 2000. These solo albums were recorded during those tragic years when Peart suffered the loss of both his wife and daughter within 6 months. That six year break led to the release of “Vapor Trails”, one of my all-time favorite Rush albums. Despite the release of the Vapor Trails Remix, I still prefer the noisy, clipped original release. “Ceiling Unlimited” is simply sublime.
@@ToeCutter0 yes great recommendations. I was so happy when Rush finally got induced into the Hall of Fame. And the audience was like Finally! "Is he the GOAT of drumming?" Why yes.... yes he is. No one else comes close. I am privileged that I got to see him live 7 times. 7 best concerts ever.
Neal is one of my favorite drummers.. of which I have at least a dozen.. but.. the goat of all drummers has to be Buddy Rich. the man's been dead 35 years and he's still better than 90% of the drummers out there
I heard that interview. A drum machine would just get in the way and doesn't have a mind for instant flexibility especially when you have a drum machine playing already with a mind
I’m a 60 year old who’s been playing drums since I’ve been 13. Neil’s always been my favourite. Whether playing drums on a church worship team or in a rock/pop/country/celtic band I always bring a little “Neil” with me. It is a testament to how one man and one band could put down their hated and weapons to come together in silence to hear and watch human perfection! I too am delighted to say I witnessed his aptitude and excellence. Forever and only a Neil Peart fan.
I had the privilege to see them three times as well and each time was an awesome spectacule to witness and behold...no one comes close to the brilliance.
@@PNW_Sportbike_Life He said that he would never get tired of playing Tom Sawyer because it was extremely difficult, and if he played it correctly, he said "it pleases me" to reproduce it exactly as recorded. He also said that they played their songs live without changing them with improvisations, because they were plenty difficult to play just the way they were recorded. There's a video someone made, where the audio is the actual song off the album, and the video portion is of Neal Peart playing it in concert, and they match up exactly. I think the song was YYZ, but not sure.

This man is such talented musician. His drums were always tuned so close to perfect. So clean and sharp. He must have spent hours rehearsing before a concert. His hand and feet movements were well above normal. Outstanding
Yeah that was so ridiculous. I saw some Buddy Rich videos on here... that guy did more with a 5 piece than anyone else. He was incredibly fast. Watch one you can tell he influenced a million drummers and very possibly Neil Peart.
CentiMorgans (cM) refers to the length of a chromosome after Thomas Morgan. It’s measured as % so as you said we can start rating drummers on the centiNeil scale from 0 to 100.
Neil Peart isn't just THE KING of drumming, He is THE GOD of drumming!!! No one can rip through a drum kit like him. He was THE TEACHER'S teacher of drumming. And, I am a very grateful disciple of Neil Peart, a drummer, who is now 65 years old, and started drumming when I was 5 years old. Let the beat go on!!!
Neil Peart was the drummer God picked to show ALL other drummers how it is done. He was 'The Professor'. His drumming has been called superhuman. The world became a better place when he was in it.
If you are interested in watching this solo without pause, you may do so elsewhere. This video consists a reaction to that drum solo. It is stated very clearly in the title.
At least he didn’t have to live through 2020. I’m being serious. 2020 was so bad. 🙄🙄Losing Neil was one of the musician industry’s biggest losses, imo. Even though it may not seem like it, Neil was a pivotal part of the music business.

Neil Peart was the primary lyricist for Rush. He was an avid motorcyclist. His bus pulled a trailer for his bike. He often rode between gigs, and would only sleep in his bus at night. Very humble and mild spoken man.
I liked how he would hang out and read books and chill by himself then.. yawn grab his sticks.. amaze the world.. go back stage and pick up his book again till the limo took him to the hotel.. always thought that was kinda neat.

I mean go on a UA-cam video of Keith Moon or John Bonham and you will find a ton of people who will declare that each of them is "easily" the greatest. I really get annoyed in particular with the people who end their proclamations with the word "period" as if it's not up for a debate. You might be able to say that about Simone Biles or Usain Bolt in their respective sports, but about artists it's rarely that clear cut.
Will truly miss being able to watch him perform live. Watching Neil and Rush live was something else. I used to get tingles up my whole body from the first song until the end of the final encore.
My heart broke the day he died. To know I will never be at a Rush concert ever again for the rest of my life is a feeling I can't describe. How lucky was I to grow up with this. This first album I ever bought when I was a little kid was Moving Pictures. YYZ is still my favorite song. R.I.P. Professor.
I missed one of their concerts when I was about 15 and I've kicked myself in the ass, over that ever since. And it was a real heart breaker when, I found out he passed away. I'm a young guy compared to most rush fans, but they are in my top 5 favorite bands of all time still.
It broke my heart too. I didn't even know he was ill. I don't think anyone did. Brain cancer is one hell of a nasty way to go. He didn't deserve it. And at my grand old age of 22, I am beyond upset I never got to see Rush/Neil live in person. They've been added to the ever growing list of bands I'll never experience. Rock In Peace Neil Peart 🤘🥁
With you there friend, albeit i was there a bit earlier than thee. Lucky to have seen RUSH 7 times since 1981, watched Neils solos grow, they were the soundtrack to my life.
If I may, I recommend his book, Ghost Rider. He was a real, whole person. It’s possible his drumming wasn’t even the most exceptional thing about Neil Pert. We’ll be awhile seeing his kind again.
@@TheMonsterRain quick to being a dick? How very UN Peart-like. He may have just had a typo. As YOU did, with breaking tense with the misspelling of pronounceD, and the superfluous comma. Ok, go to edit, we'll wait.
He wrote all the lyrics man, if you've an ounce of intellect read the man's lyrics. Lakeside park, tom Sawyer, ghost of a chance, roll the bones, new world man, the fountain of lamneth, the temples of spyrinx, tears, lessons, I could go on for days. As awesome as his drumming is, the man was well read, poetic, socially conscious, and in general a deep person with compassion for the world he lived in. That's his real legacy. He married one woman, stayed with her until her death. Was not a drunk or druggy like so many rock and roll musicians of that era. And you seriously belittle and insult him calling it "drumming" the man was a percussionist. Perfectionist. In later interviews he mentioned he hated playing tom Sawyer live for the fans because even for him it was so hard to do it right every time, and he felt he cheated his fans if it wasn't perfect every time. That gentleman is the mark of a professional percussionist that loved the craft more than his ego.
What’s the level *above* “Greatest Drummer of All Time?” Oh yeah: Neil Peart. This is amazing and if you ever got a chance to hear it live in person…unforgettable.
I know this is a year old but yes, Neal was the GOAT of drumming. I really hate that acronym being thrown around so much but it truly fits Neal Peart. Man was a genius.
My 6th grader is a solid drummer for his age; when he started drumming with a full kit (two years ago) the first thing I did was tell him about Rush and the legend; Neil Pert.
Neil would say he wasn’t, I would say he was. But more importantly he was one of the greatest people to ever live. He truly lived a complete life, after having suffered complete heartbreak.
Geddy and Alex gave him the nickname “The Professor” due to his love of reading while on tour. His nose was constantly stuck in a book. He was quite content to sit on the tour bus and read while the other guys met with fans, his lyrics in Limelight allude to that, “I can’t pretend a stranger is a long awaited friend”. For his drumming skills he was called, “The Master”. He grew up in the city I live in and I go to Lakeside Park a lot, it reminds me of their music and Neil’s impact.
It's neither. Neil wrote on his website (Neil Peart.net) he got the name nickname because he reminded Ged & Alex of the character The Professor on the TV Show Gilligan's Island.
The greatest drummer the world has ever seen, he saw buddy, he saw bonham, he saw baker and he said, “yeah let me play that but in 7/8” the absolute god of the drumming world, RIP the professor, one of the most gifted musicians to ever pick up the sticks

Had been a fan forever but never go to see them live until around 2004(I think?) in Portland OR. The entire concert was amazing but the drum solo was jaw dropping. I swear he had 6 arms to do that.
I was gonna suggest to this reviewer to read Peart's lyrics. KISS (sucks) toured with Rush long ago. I watched some of "The Decline of Western Civilization Part ?" where Gene Simmons made fun of Rush members because they were reading rather than getting laid and partying. obviously Rush is more technical as musicians than KISS (sucks). guys have followed them around the world for decades. with the same fans in the front rows they watched each other getting older like receding hair lines and some fans gained weight lol. seeing Rush 100 times is not out of the question.
Niel was definitely the greatest. He lived a moment of great depression himself after the loss of his wife and daughter at the same time and had to get away from the band for a while but eventually got back into playing and still killed it. May he RIP and fly high with his wife and daughter.
@@RobertMJohnson as a drummer of over 35 years and a huge Bonham/Zeppelin fan and student, I have to disagree with you. I did once hold that view though. Bonham was at one time the greatest rock drummer and in some ways still is but only in his style. Bonham didn't have the technical expertise or ability of some of today's best rock drummers. What Bonham did have that most don't is a particular style of feel. Thats what hooks people into his playing and so few can duplicate. The title greatest of all time is too subjective to be put on any one drummer. They're all the greatest in their own ways. I'm sure Neil included Bonham as an influence. And if Bonham had lived long enough he would have considered Neil an influence too.
Not only Killed it.. .went back to school and developed entirely new skill sets and techniques. To have the resolve and strength to move from the nadir of ones life to then start over almost literals, and then reach his own personal skill and performance zenith once again is truly remarkable, and noteworthy on a purely personal level.
All 3 members of Rush have their Doctorates in Music and music theory. he was not a drummer but a percussionist. In my opinion he was and always will be the greatest

You just witnessed a Master Class in percussion. There's a reason that after Buddy Rich died, jazz musicians wanted to play a memorial concert and asked Neil Peart to play the drums. RIP Neil (the Professor) Peart.
The band Neil played in was called Rush. He came from a time when EVERY instrument in a band was considered important and not just a backup for the vocalist. That attitude REQUIRED each instrumentalist to be as good as they could be. Neil was the personification of that attitude
@@johnwhisman1323 every member of rush is among the very best of all time in their main insturments. there is just no way they could have done what they did, lead the world in progressive rock for 45 years, without all being able to challenge each other to be among the very best of all time. i play bass, and Geddy is my hero, but Neil is easily in the top 2-3 drummers of all time, while Geddy has a few more challengers, Les Claypool among them. but you cant discount Alex. there are a lot of very talented Guitarists out there, but Alex really should be counted among the top 10-20 of all time. Rush simply could not have worked without it.
I forget where I heard this, but I quote it often. If a musician wants to keep perfect timing, they will follow a metronome. If a metronome wants to keep perfect timing, it follows Neil Peart. Seen him and Rush several times, and it's always been my favorite concert. RIP Professor 😪
Neil Peart (pronounced pEErt) was nicknamed the “professor” since he made a series of instructional videos for drummers. His career spanned from the late 1960’s to 2018. That’s roughly 50 years! During that time he spent countless hours perfecting his art, and worked with/mentored under numerous drumming greats. The solo you just saw (and his set) is the culmination of years, and years of study. Neil said he was always trying to improve, and perfect his solos. Is he the greatest drummer of all time? That’s pretty subjective. I would say that their are other solos by other artists out there that are comparable to Neil’s, but they’re different in style, feel, and sound. I’m sure if Neil were alive today he would say that his playing is a recipe inspired by generations of drummers. Personally, I think he IS the greatest drummer of his time, and will be remembered as a legend for generations to come. I’m glad you had the opportunity to be exposed to his art. Thank you for the video. Stay safe.
Small correction, Neil had been called the professor since long before those instructional videos. On the All the World's a Stage live album, Geddy even introduces Neil as the Professor when he starts his drum solo. He also retired in 2015 when they finished their last tour. You can never have too much Neil!
From what I've heard, Neil recognized the greats that he learned from, that he stood on the shoulders of giants. This particular solo give homage to the jazz drummers like Buddy Rich. This solo, while awesome, isn't his best work- his best work was with his bandmates Geddy and Alex, and the amazing music they produced for 40+ years.
Neal Peart is the GOAT of drumming. I have seen him several times in the 80s and 90s. His kit, his patterns, his thought process is all next level shit. His immensity cannot be touched.
Meh. He was a great drummer. But I'd hardly say he was anywhere near Neil's calibre. Solid. But Neil totally outshines him. Which is why we talk endlessly of Peart but we don't seem to talk much about Palmer.
That’s something to be totally proud of. I’ve never seen them live. I just listened to Rush since I was 4 because my brother adored Rush! Lol Neil is a King.
Neil never stopped learning, he sat with people learned their styles perfected his technique. For those of us have listened for 40 years or 5 years you appreciate the sound of these 3 guys. To appreciate the ability of other styles is the best thing any of us can do.
@fartpoobox ohyeah Enough with the posturing you two. However, your statements are not well supported. Rush was not an in-pocket type of band. It's more a metal version of lord of the dance. NP never got to chase the band, threatening to run them over like a steam roller, like Bonham. Or explore strange new rhythms that threaten the meaning of the word rhythm, like Bruford. But NP has a right to emulate his heroes (Buddy Rich) night after night and avoid his villains in his solos. Are you really surprised that he took no great influence from Charlie Watts? But there is really very few bands that are less blusey, less jazzy than Rush. And to conclude that NP is not a good drummer on the basis of that sample seems myopic. It also suggets that you don't value the opinions of significant numbers of the greatest drummers in my lifetime who say he was an influence or inspiration , and yes partly due the endless learning. They know its a show, some kiddy pleaser splashes and razzle dazzle but I never heard them say he was anything less than masterful, and I have to believe them. Have you heard NP's when the Levee Breaks or Dyer Makr. Most people haven't but it's not (wasn't! s**t) Lord of the Dance all the time.
Neil Peart is the GOAT. I have seen him play drum solos live from the late 1970s until the end of Rush, and he delivered the goods every time. RIP Neil, I and countless others miss you and continue to offer gratitude for the music you made.

13:57 yes. Yes, he was, my friend. He was the greatest of all times. Canadians are eternally proud of him. You should see what his bass player and guitarist could do. Happy New Year.
People often say that things are 'AWESOME' but Neil truly filled people with Awe. As gifted and accomplished as he was, he NEVER stopped learning his craft.
@@blacklight4460 Most people in general, not only Rush fans.
Chill out.
@@blacklight4460 In general though, most of the early Rush fans focus 95% on the music and less on the lyrics - as evidenced by them being very vocal about abandoning the guys throughout most of the 80's and dissing the synth era. If they were to listen to the lyrics equally, they would appreciate lines like "sometimes our big splashes, are just ripples in the pool" or "Spirits fly on dangerous missions
, imaginations on fire" just as much as Alex's solo in La Villa, or Geddy's vocals in 2112.

He wasn’t just a drummer, he was a full percussionist, a true, full musician.
And a lyricist and storyteller
don't forget insane brilliant lyricist
And wrote the lyrics!
every good drummer is a full musician. There are two types of musicians: good and bad. Neil was good.
RIP Neil
Nothing to add well said 👏
He was the hope for the peculiar guy trying (and in his case, succeeding) to make it in this world and find a way to fit in. As geniuses often appear, he always had that quirky, high-intellect demeanor. Could he really fit in? The bigger question asked was, Did he make an impact? For me, he did and still does. I still miss him as I loyally play my Rush tunes.
RIP Professor

Neal Peart didn’t move the needle when it comes to drumming excellence, he was the needle.

Of course he is.
He’s awesome but John Bohnam is the best.
I miss him!!!!!!
Laughed when I saw your comment because that's exactly what I was doing. lol!
Peart and Lee get recognition all the time and are consistently ranked as one of the best at their crafts. It's Alex who is criminally underrated.
Sad but true

@@RobertMJohnson as a drummer of over 35 years and a huge Bonham/Zeppelin fan and student, I have to disagree with you. I did once hold that view though. What Bonham did have that most don't is a particular style of feel. Thats what hooks people into his playing and so few can duplicate. You just witnessed a Master Class in percussion. There's a reason that after Buddy Rich died, jazz musicians wanted to play a memorial concert and asked Neil Peart to play the drums. RIP Neil (the Professor) Peart.
It looks as though you had no idea what you were getting into, lol.
Your correct to mention Danny. But he was influenced by someone. Neil???
I’m so lucky to have seen this performance from the 10th row !!!
The band Neil played in was called Rush. He came from a time when EVERY instrument in a band was considered important and not just a backup for the vocalist. That attitude REQUIRED each instrumentalist to be as good as they could be. Neil was the personification of that attitude
It's amazing that Rush had only three members!
I know Geddy Lee played Bass and keys and lead singer.
I Think Neal Peart May Be THE GREATEST DRUMMER EVER!!!!!
@@sirjorahmormont3448 They were all multi-instrumentalists.
@@johnwhisman1323 Agreed, up there with Bonham.

He also taught courses in modern poetry at the University of Toronto, I believe. I think this was in the mid 80’s or 90’s.
@@tzmcneill By all of the lyrics he wrote, definitely sounds right up his alley.
I heard the professor was kind of an insult
Neal Peart is the GOAT of drumming. I have seen him several times in the 80s and 90s. His kit, his patterns, his thought process is all next level shit. His immensity cannot be touched.

Neil never stopped learning, he sat with people learned their styles perfected his technique. For those of us have listened for 40 years or 5 years you appreciate the sound of these 3 guys. To appreciate the ability of other styles is the best thing any of us can do.
Fact! I love Rush.
@fartpoobox ohyeah Imagine talking this much crap….Please go educate yourself son 😂
Awesome....2112 got me through alot of chit.....thx Dr.Neil and staff

I watched more Buddy Rich solo videos than any other drummer. I think simply because he probably has the most solo videos. He was definitely amazing! I would have loved to see him play Neil's set!
Another observation is that Buddy didn't have a whole lotta respect for drummers who didn't use the conventional grip.
I was lucky enough to see Rush in concert 4-5 times. No one comes close to Neil Peart.
