Full-frame is a PITA for everything except UA-cam vlogging and portrait photography. Once a camera rig exceeds 3 lbs, it needs more support than you can sustain long-term with your wrists alone. With full-frame, your handheld options are pretty much limited to prime lenses. With MFT IBIS, you can easily use just about any wide or midrange lens handheld. The MFT advantage is even greater shooting video on a gimbal or monopod. Apertures f2.8 and lower are frequently needed for indoor video, and MFT offers many lens options. With full-frame, fast apertures produce such narrow depth-of-field it's a real challenge to keep moving subjects in focus. Both the GH6 and the GH5s can shoot video at ISO 6400 in 10-bit 422 with just as much dynamic range as any full-frame camera at literally half the weight and half the cost.
The comment about a GH5 or this having 0 shutter clicks after years of use is how I got a GX85 to use as a backup/walk around body for stills for a solid used price with like 140 shutter count. I still really like the images I get out of my E-M1 Mark II and GX85, I see zero reason to sell it all and move my primary kit to another platform. I also like the ~16mp spot so much so that I've considered selling the E-M1 and picking up an E-M5 Mark II to get some of those features/slr style body to compliment the small rangefinder style GX85.

I just ordered one primarily for stills. I'll use it for video quite a lot too, but I shoot stills far more often and this is a huge upgrade over my g9 in that department. The video out of this looks at least 2 stops better than the gh5 at high iso. Carried over into photos with all my noktons and I'll be a happy club photographer.
I have a G9 and debating this or the OM-1, which seems to be more stills and wildlife focused, which I do a decent amount of. But I have done and hope to do more video, so obviously this is the better choice in that regard. Not sure which way I'm gonna go and hopefully will get some comparisons on still image quality between the two.
If you're mainly into stills and committed to M43, for the same price you can get an OM-1 with much better stills capability. The GH-6 is very video-centric by comparison.
Why would you pay this money for stills? This is a camera for video dude. Take that money and get an R6 if you want stills. A micro four thirds for stills doesn't make sense
I'm coming from a G9 and also mainly shoot stills. I'd strongly consider this one but I agree with the comments the the OM1 may be better. I love the handling and buttons on the Panasonic cameras but the OM1 may be my first Olympus.
Nah, the OM-1 is still the way to go for hybrid shooting. Phase detect AF will still be superior than contrast detect af. Panasonic might as well have abandoned photography for their MFT cameras.
@@professionalpotato4764 missed the point of the OM-1 aiming to be a hybrid camera. Panasonic shouldn’t have even bothered putting a mechanical shutter in there like kai and lok said. It’s too bulky and heavy to be a stills camera, they stripped out a lot of photo features that were in the G9. Panasonic themselves have even said they’re not making a G9 successor so they already handed Olympus the win on the stills end before they even showed the GH6. I already knew this would happen so I hoped Olympus would bring in a phase detect af system that was even better than what’s in the M1X, a stacked backside illuminated sensor, a relatively compact body like the E-M1, all with a better resolution EVF and more features on the stills end than what Panasonic would put in the GH6. I’ve been using a G9 for 4 years, once they announced that there will be no G9 successor I knew Olympus would throw everything they had to make the ultimate MFT stills camera. And they’ve done so while taking video more seriously but not as crazy as the GH6. So to me of course the OM-1 would be the best camera of the 2.
@Danny _R27 Everything can be a hybrid, but the compromise in each mode is what matters. I think the om1 works well for a 80/20 or 90/10 stills/video type of shooter. The gh6 would be a complete reverse. That compression makes grading tough, even with 10 bit.
@@professionalpotato4764 I was hoping that both the OM-1 and GH6 would be hybrid cameras. 60% stills and 40% video for the OM-1 and 40% stills for the GH6 and 60% video. But Panasonic’s marketing lately has been all video related, like they’ve abandoned stills and handed Olympus the win with in that area. Olympus never truly wanted to get into video so it’s like the just added similar video specs to the G9s firmware 2.0 update with slightly better slow motion and called it a day. But like I said, I knew way ahead of the reveal that they would be ignoring stills with the GH6 and that there will be no G9 successor. So the G9 is still their flagship stills MFT camera. I was really hoping for a G9 successor announcement a year ago but then they said there won’t be one so I knew Olympus would win me over eventually. I won’t be getting the OM-1 until like late September or early October. So I’ll still enjoy the G9 till then. The G9 has all the video features I want since firmware 2.0, so the Olympus OM-1 only had to match the G9 video capabilities to win me over for video. But they blew it away with stills, and it may only be 20 MP res but a stacked backside illuminated sensor is gonna do wonders for stills. Which is what I’m interested in the most. I was disappointed at the GH6 but happy for people that do video as it’s pretty much the ultimate run and gun MFT video camera while Olympus made the ultimate stills MFT camera with better video capabilities than their previous E-M1 Mark. III.
@@danny_r27 I feel you. They both went too deep in either direction (for better or for worse). I think Panasonic really need a G9 successor. I felt that the G9 was in more was a successful hybrid. Perfect price point, great features, even if there were limitations. Most people serious with video already have a Ninja V so that unlocks the full potential. I would love to see a G9ii or G10 that's basically a scaled down stills first GH6. No fan,3 way tilt but more compact would be nice, LongGOP for all recording modes and dual SD slots with a larger buffer to allow for 5-10s bursts. And it cannot be priced more than $1,500. The OM1 has me excited for some features like the better AF, the possibility of having good AF while vlogging using the Pana Leica 10-25 f/1.7. And the crazy weather sealing. I can see myself looking at an Olympus if I ever join my (pending) father-in-law for multiday hikes.
I love my GH2, GH3, GH4R and my GH5 but I finally switched everything over to Sony. There's still a little niggle I've made a mistake (for video) but as I shoot stills I wanted a great hybrid. I also didn't want three different manufacturers (I had Nikon too) with all their different lenses and batteries. This way I can streamline my bags, great for my aging back.
Imho the C-AF is really quite good, if it can stick to and track aircraft properly. I think a camera's Autofocus is only great if it can track really fast moving subjects. Without rolling shutter in video mode (like on my Sony A6300).
looks awesome, had an S1 and although loved the images that came out of it, the AF was very inconsistent for both stills and video and I now learn they have ditched the S1 to go along with the S1R leaving only the S5.
I have full frame and micro 4/3 cameras. Each have advantages and disadvantages. Most people never use the high mp size of large sensors. I have wonderful large prints from my old 12mp nikon D700. I think I will add this camera to my collection. I think it might well do wonderfully in blended modes of normal with the high res mode of 100 mp for landscape photography.Nice and small and light. I think the high res mode would also work on family outdoor portraits for the really big prints.
I just bought an old D200 because the way that CCD handles skin is so unique and beautiful :-) I have M43, APS-C and FF cameras in my kit. Use the right tool for the job.
V-Log is just plain good looking. If all of those nice changes from the 5, 5ii to the 6; you will see the next generation of full frame really do some big leaps. They're just too many of those full-frame cameras that are overheating that that fan is indispensable. The fixing of face tracking and the stabilization on the software side they're just going to be able to roll that into the next camera and everything else they produce.
I got the GH4 new and later a GoPro Hero 4 Black and wanted to get the GH6 and GoPro Hero 6 when they came out together... Funny how life works XD I will end up getting this camera eventually as I love it and would love to use some of my current lenses and shoot some 4k60/120p I wonder if the 4k60/120p will be 4:2:2 amd able to record on the SD card?
For my work, M43 is best. I shoot live theatre, concerts and dance shows. Keeping more in focus with a deeper depth of field is better for me. I use two GH5’s a GH5 ii and a GH6.
OMG - 1:13 they've actually DEDICATED a record button next to lens - have been running GH5 since 2017 and remapped the button on opposite side, front of body for focus pulling/record ergonomics
So a "Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 100-400mm f/5-6.3 IS Lens" would give me more zoom then my 20X? RIGHT? I think my old HXa1s is 600 mm equivalent, and you double the mm's with micro 4/3s... RIght?!?! IDK... IMHO @10:46 Whats that little color fold out thingy? A "Color Checker"? Pretty expensive!!! There must be a low tech option, like a painters color wheel... imho
As someone who did paintings as a hobby, no the low tech stuff will be more expensive. The good paints (dyes are cheap and will not be lightfast) are already $10-20 a tube. And the weeks you'll take to make your own while matching to the industry standards is pointless. They arent that expensive really.
it really comes down to lens weight. no not the hulking lenses u chose. I mean the pana 42.5, the 12-34, the leica 15. What's missing is a small cheap light 10mm-xx for vloggers. hulking leica beast 10mm no good. I did a trip with 10 lenses and cam in a mini bacpack. the s5 is tempting mainly if not only for the chance to have 18mm and 16mm.
S5 or gh6? Is there any way to mod phase detection or lidar detection to the gh6, maybe by salvaging it from a different olycamera? Most will gladly pay 2-400 dollars for it, the market is huge if it also worked with other fh series?
Man, why couldn't they put that style of display on the Xt4? All this arguing over which has the better screen, xt3 or xt4 could be put to rest if they just used this screen.
Yay for Dan! By the way, A&W Root Beer doesn't taste like Sarsi at all! Pour it into a chilled beer mug and toss a lump of vanilla ice cream into that!
I believe some people avoid Panasonic partly because of 2 reasons: 1) autofocus not as good as Sony, Canon and Nikon 2) smaller sensor camera with size bigger, weight heavier than other brands' bigger sensor camera

Many times I use zoom lenses for planes, ships, and birds .... and M4/3 is great for that .... plus I do not need to buy new lenses .... and M4/3 tend to be cheaper than full frame.

You are wasting your money
I'm coming from a G9 and also mainly shoot stills. I'd strongly consider this one but I agree with the comments the the OM1 may be better. I love the handling and buttons on the Panasonic cameras but the OM1 may be my first Olympus.
And Kai is back, that so good :)
What kind of reasonably priced camera do you think would give a better cinematic look than the GH5?
It cannt use 4T TYPEB card , It only read 2TB.....So bad....What can I do ?
Small m43 cameras is what I want to come back
8:13 whats up with that wobble? Was that the focus breathing?
Nah, the OM-1 is still the way to go for hybrid shooting. Phase detect AF will still be superior than contrast detect af. Panasonic might as well have abandoned photography for their MFT cameras.
Not with rhe crazy compression in video. 77mbps is waaaay too low
I never dikm very fast moving subjects, most people dont.
The A6300 has terrible rolling shutter... Though I'm a Fuji shooter so I'm spoiled
How well does the AF work with a speedbooster is my question :D
I wouldn’t count on it
looks awesome, had an S1 and although loved the images that came out of it, the AF was very inconsistent for both stills and video and I now learn they have ditched the S1 to go along with the S1R leaving only the S5.
Hmm how would this compare to the BMPCC 6K?
Kai, will you do a gh6 vs a7siii comparison?
Can you please share us what arm is this? Looking great! Thx in advance.
Did you review a Panasonic camera in the Grays of Westminster shop?
Awesome video, well done!
Can someone tell me which zoo is this?
Kind regards,
Barry
Just ordered this, just came across your channel too, I chose this to mix with my drone footage ✌🏼
Wow!! What is battery life when shooting full go? Or do you have to have external power at that point? Can you heat a burrito from that side vent?
Great to see you Dan! Andy D
So I’m guessing this is more for video and less for photo?
V-Log is just plain good looking. If all of those nice changes from the 5, 5ii to the 6; you will see the next generation of full frame really do some big leaps. They're just too many of those full-frame cameras that are overheating that that fan is indispensable. The fixing of face tracking and the stabilization on the software side they're just going to be able to roll that into the next camera and everything else they produce.
the slowmotion now have correct autofocus? on my G9 there is only manual focus for that option... and cropped 4K is bad...
I got the GH4 new and later a GoPro Hero 4 Black and wanted to get the GH6 and GoPro Hero 6 when they came out together...
Funny how life works XD
I will end up getting this camera eventually as I love it and would love to use some of my current lenses and shoot some 4k60/120p
I wonder if the 4k60/120p will be 4:2:2 amd able to record on the SD card?
4k120 is 4:2:0 H265 at 300 Mbit/s. But at least you can write it straight to the SDcard also.
Can this nice cam be used while external battery is charging???
What can the Panasonic GH6 take pictures ?
Video on the camera arm/mount👀
Great work. Great to see the af of GH6 actually works more reliably if not perfect. Kai, are you gonna review the OM systems OM1 ?
Do you think a Autofocus Update for Lumix S- Cameras like S5 will come ?
Oh man I have so much work to do but just got a notification that a new video dropped. Work or video? Video it is 😅
Why did Lok move to the UK? No work in HK? Or did he really miss shooting weedeos with Kai?
Freedom?
Just watch his video: ua-cam.com/video/DqkkbnE-ymo/v-deo.html
Dude... super excited about a new flagship M43 from Panasonic. Solid upgrade!
How does the gh6 compare to the fx30?
For my work, M43 is best. I shoot live theatre, concerts and dance shows. Keeping more in focus with a deeper depth of field is better for me. I use two GH5’s a GH5 ii and a GH6.
What is the best lens for POV on Panasonic Lumix GH6?
I was thinking about picking up a secondary camera....
Which mic are you using
This is one of the few channels I watch on x1 speed instead of x2
OMG - 1:13 they've actually DEDICATED a record button next to lens - have been running GH5 since 2017 and remapped the button on opposite side, front of body for focus pulling/record ergonomics
No trolley lady test?
So a "Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 100-400mm f/5-6.3 IS Lens" would give me more zoom then my 20X? RIGHT? I think my old HXa1s is 600 mm equivalent, and you double the mm's with micro 4/3s... RIght?!?! IDK... IMHO
@10:46 Whats that little color fold out thingy? A "Color Checker"? Pretty expensive!!! There must be a low tech option, like a painters color wheel... imho
As someone who did paintings as a hobby, no the low tech stuff will be more expensive. The good paints (dyes are cheap and will not be lightfast) are already $10-20 a tube. And the weeks you'll take to make your own while matching to the industry standards is pointless. They arent that expensive really.
What LUT is Lok using? His footage looks 👌🏼
The IBIS is amazing.
it really comes down to lens weight. no not the hulking lenses u chose.
I am sure autofocus is working so well because they trained it with your goofy videos or similar.
I believe some people avoid Panasonic partly because of 2 reasons:
1) autofocus not as good as Sony, Canon and Nikon
2) smaller sensor camera with size bigger, weight heavier than other brands' bigger sensor camera
I am going to buy this camera. I shoot exterior under the sun video clips for Pond5 .... I do not need a large sensor .... Many times I use zoom lenses for planes, ships, and birds .... and M4/3 is great for that .... plus I do not need to buy new lenses .... and M4/3 tend to be cheaper than full frame.
35sec you got lens cap on - still excited :D
Please do not park on the pavement, not only is it illegal but it causes issues for the partially sighted and blind. Thanks 😊 Enjoyed the review
I can't believe people would buy the GH5(2).
But the fan got me worried. How long the fan going to last?
Fans last forever these days!
Been waiting for your review of this camera ma boi ❤️
I sold my GH5S and almost all my m4/3 gear a few years ago to go full frame (for various reasons I won’t go into) but I just bought a GH6! (though I’m not selling all my full frame gear). Gotta say it feels like coming home again… there’s just something about the picture I still adore in the GH lines I’ve always loved and the GH6 just improves that even more, particularly the colours and not to mention the added features and resolutions/bitrates. Can’t wait to see what comes in the first major firmware update 👀
You have GAS bro
what AF settings?
@Kai W please do review of Leica 35mm APO F2 with M11 please
Sarsi !! Malaysian drink 🤩
exciting release
I've been tempted to pick up one of these up.. since the gh5. now I'm even more tempted.
If they ever get this centuries focus type I’ll get one
Who's going to vlog with a 823g M43 camera? For M43, I'd expect sub 450g.
This camera is bigger then S5 Full frame from the same company.
Please, bring back GARCIA!!!!! You guys make great videos.
I love my Lumixes, especially the ZS-50 and bought a ZS-70 because it had more pixels. Well, more was not better, the ZS-70 takes lousy photos. Putting more pixels into the same size sensor for me is now a warning, not a cause for joy.
damn this is super different than gerald's vid lol - kai a bit more optimistic on this one
Nice review! Nice camera but how it fill in the marketing now!?
It is my understanding that nobody can do RAW yet because of the RED patent but it's only a matter of time before that runs out.
Really like this kind of real review
another great video :) but did you had a lensecap on in the short clip, in the start..... hahaha awesome video from you two :)
Never thought you could get canned A&W from Malaysia over in London. My fridge has a stack of those!
100mp stills not enough?
