the #1 tip for the application letter is: don‘t tell them what you already did (they can just look at your resume for that). in the letter you need to tell them *what you can do for them* for example: based on my experience with i can take responsibility for in your team employers have problems. employers have tasks that need to be done. tell them you can solve their problems and take the responsibility for those tasks
That an interesting take. I was a hiring manager for a large international bank for many years. I never expected job candidates to tell me how they could serve the company. I would simply assess their skills and personality attributes and form my own ideas about how I could use that person. I would not expect outside candidates to know what “problems” I have that they could solve. Like the old Blues son says, “You don’t know my mind.”
Software engineer here. You're doing great. Sooner or later will get there. Remember it's not about a job but the journey. Keep learning, humble as you are and enjoying present time
If you're open to advice from someone who is actually established, businesses don't just want to see how you can flex your code slinging skills. They want to see how you can practically apply those skills to suit their needs. A good example would be taking a database, and creating sql scripts to groom and export the data to another table and then displaying said data to demonstrate some sort of BI. I give this example because it directly targets any business you might be applying to, and through the short synopsis of the app you already created, it's not too far off. It is important to know your target audience and speak their language though. HR? The hiring manager? They won't know the finer details of that app no matter how hard you try to explain it. By no means am I saying stop doing what you're doing, it's absolutely important to maintain passion, and expand your skillset.
Dude I feel your pain. I'm glad that you're getting interviews. I've dropped about 300 apps since the new year and haven't gotten a single call. I've passed my resume to hiring managers I know and many say things like "If we had an opening I'd interview you" so idk if they're blowing smoke or if the resume is fine I'm just lower on the list for some reason.
I had to apply to bunch of jobs to get those 2 interviews honestly. I really think the key is just to keep applying. You only need one offer letter to be successful. I wish you the best of luck!
I'm a senior/lead programmer with 3 pages long resume at font size 7; and I can't find a new job either. (My current employer isn't treating me well so I'd like to leave.) If I apply to a position I am overqualified for, I am declined without an interview. If I apply for a position I am well qualified for, I am ghosted like you said.
@@JordantheComputerScientist sorry to say it’s probably gonna be another year at the minimum before things start to get better. Interest rates have to go down, the election needs to be done, and companies need to start hiring again, and that will take some time. Most we can hope for is that layoffs stop in 2024, which will mean less pressure on the small number of jobs
I'm also a Bachelor Major in fall 2023, Graduated in last July. Unfortunately although a bit different than your story (working freelancing atleast once every 2 months... a lot right?) and working as a senior for couple of months once... I'm still not financially stable, nor work environment stable... I hope that changes soon. I have so many dreams and projects that i need collegues and time and money to support and create - so i could change life...
I have been thinking about freelancing while applying but I thought I would be in the same position. “Why would I hire you to build my project when you just graduated?” I guess I could still look into it. I hope things change for the better for you

Maybe as a community, we need to come together and create our own opportunities. We need good ideas for software, and then us junior devs could come together and work on it together
I agree with this. I remember when I decided to major in CS, I thought “i can get or job or create my own company “ and now is literally the best time to try to become an entrepreneur if you don’t have your career started yet. You either succeed and have money or you fail but created a hopefully impressive project to put on your resume. I’ve been working on small projects and planning others with friends.
Same problem here as a software engineer. I already applied for 7 jobs, and 6 of them sent me an automated mail telling me they aren't in need of programmers at the moment
I'm in the same position. Fall '23 grad, not located in a major city so tech jobs are rare in the area. No remote jobs for junior devs. So its relocate or try freelance stuff. I'm currently working an entry level job in a FinTech company, but doesn't have anything to do with CS. Still looking, still learning, still struggling.
Yeah, I really don’t want to move but I am seeing a lot more of opportunities in other states than my area. Opportunities as in job descriptions closer to my YOE and title requirements.
Hang in there! Market is super tough currently but you will find one. Just keep applying everyday. I spent hours every day applying for months. What tech stack are you looking to get a job in specifically?
Thanks I will. I am looking for testing positions or developing positions. I would like to work with a tech stack that involves react js. I have experience testing in java and js so I am open to roles that involves automated and manual testing.
All I will say is if you have your own LLc why couldn’t you be a software engineer for your own company. A lot of people myself included lack experience in the computer science field. Sometimes you have to improvise on your work experience
In 2023 I took my Computer Science degree and I'm still unemployed (in Greece). The only positions available, are those with hard coding tests and even if you pass them, the salary is a joke. Awesome. 😅
When i saw a friend going for his driving test i told him, 'wear a uniform, it helps.' It did. Anyway, not saying you should wear a uniform, but maybe you should say you're only doing this part time unitl a full time job is available. Get your foot in the door then keep looking. Good luck.

Best advice is to go back to college and grad school for a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering.
@jordanthecs Any tips on how to get a get understanding of CS without going back to school for it?
Learning a low level language and doing data structures and algorithms in that language does wonders in my opinion
