Why do you ask the question "Can Cholesterol Get Too Low?" and then at the end of the (otherwise interesting) video tell us that it will not be answered here but in the next one? Really!

After a heart attack and a 98% blockage at age 56, I lowered my LDL from 135 to 35. I have been able to maintain it for nearly 2 years. With moving to a plant-based diet I have lost 60 lbs too. It can be done!
are there any plant based foods that you avoid that might raise cholesterol? e.g. sugar or coconut oil etc.?
You dropped this low also with drugs right?
@@rinkuhero None that I can think of off hand. I do not consume any foods with coconut oil, palm oil, hydrogenated oil. I am careful about reading labels and try to limit fat intake to 9 grams a day.
Wow, that's amazing! :D Yep, any plant source of saturated fat like those you have listed will raise cholesterol and are best avoided if doing a WFPB diet to reverse CAD.
Nice job!! :) I’m 41 doing sport regularly and went completely on vegan diet 2 years ago, but I wasn’t eating that much animal products even before I went vegan. I liked yogurt though and cheese with time to time. Anyway after 1 year on vegan diet my LDL level was 75. Now it’s been 2 years on vegan diet. Super happy!!! :) I use sometimes olive oil even though trying to cut down on oil too. I’m in super shape and growing my muscles without much problem! :) I was junky eater when I was younger hopefully is not too late for me to reverse all the damage I did in the past. :)
Wow. First 2 minutes are shocking, especially those maps. I wish more people knew this!
I'm 25. I've been vegan for two years following Dr. Greger's recommendations. My HDL is 40. My LDL is 51. Relatives/friends have asked why I care so much about cholesterol at such a young age - this is why. Stroke, heart attack, alzheimer's, etc - those problems don't start when you're in your 50s, they start when you're in your 20s, when saturated fat starts to build up in your arteries.
However, HDL must be higher than LDL
Are you able to have an erection with those low numbers?
@@synsynsy why wouldn’t he?
@@kata0812 you can do it with exercise, but when ldl is that low, it’s not that important. Generally HDL levels are not considered that important anymore.

The content is good, but I feel disappointed because I thought I would discover if cholesterol can get too low. Could you please change the title to something more descriptive? Maybe "Cholesterol: the surprising benefits of lifelong choices"?
Cliff hanger ending. 😂
Yes, this is a very irritating technique he often uses. Tease good info in the title, and then say "next time."
I agree. Awesome eye-opening content as always. I understand click bait descriptions are proven to work and drive more traffic but there's a line between click-bait and deceptive. Indeed there is a lingering feeling of being robbed when realizing the reason I clicked this title is not in this video.
My suggestion would be "Lowering your LDL's might not be enough" / "You're lowering your LDL's the wrong way". Both are click-baity and relevant to the content while the cliff hanger would still be there at the end.
@@phreak074 It is frustrating for sure. He does ask the question in the video, and given that, it's not deceptive really. If you look at it though, he does two new videos every week, they have to be in the 5-7 minute time range, and the content is all free and super high-quality. For all of those things I'm willing to wait two days to get the answer. Honestly, all of the other info in the video was very valuable.

Finding Dr. Gregor put me on the right path and I’m so grateful. Fully vegan for 1.5 years and down 60lbs from diet alone.
Looking forward to spending many more healthy years with my family!
Looking forward to the next chapter! My son (11)had to prepare a healthy full day of eating for his nutrition class (his teacher is a paediatric doctor). Since we eat wfpb at home every meal he suggested was vegan. I told him, when they ask, tell them you used the Harvard plate as template (don't mention anything with vegan). And his teacher/ paediatric doctor said she didn't like it, because the Harvard plate is too low in cholesterol (there was none at all in my sons menu). Hence my son encountered "but it is not essential, our bodies can produce cholesterol" to which she explained him that eating no cholesterol could harm the liver because it would need to work so much. Can you believe that? She teaches children that low to no cholesterol consumption harms the liver!
Ah damnit with those cliff hangers, still love em though lol
Awesome eye-opening content as always!
It's know that click bait descriptions are proven to work and do drive more traffic, sure that is fine, but there's a line between click-bait and deception.
Some suggestions for titles: "Lowering your LDL's might not be enough", "You're lowering your LDL's the wrong way", "Decreasing LDLs may not decrease your risk for heart disease". Hi 👋, you follow the medication too?
Do you have any stent or bypass?
I have a question: I am 54 years old man, I have a stent for 9 months, I am not following the medication, I am on plants based diet for 4 months now, I followed keto diet just for 2 months and I increased cholesterol to 275 , now with plants based diet I decreased in 3 months to 166 , but my doctor said: you decreased your cholesterol without medication but is still high.. so, if you want to lower your cholesterol you have to take statins because if you follow only with the diet your cholesterol doesn’t go lower. I am asking you Howard it’s true ?
Thank you for your help
@@gabriel65304 no statins- my blockage was identified in an ekg stress test and then by a scan with contrast media injected trans-radially. The 20% blockage was not enough to stent and I refused statins because of the side affects and found myself researching diet and stumbling on Dr Gregor (and other diet focused physicians).
Regarding your situation if I were you
I would want to know a few things. 1)What are your HDL levels? once you know your HDL level then you can compute your Total Cholesterol/HDL ratio. This is a more meaningful measure in some ways than total Cholesterol.
Also as you may know there are three differing (maybe more) types of LDL. There is large bouyant LDL (LBLDL) and intermediate sized LDL (ILDL) which carry a low risk of atherosclerosis and small dense LDL (sdLDL)... of the three the risk comes from sdLDL.. and there are inexpensive test whereby you can determine the level of sdLDL. See link:
www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5441126/
I would hesitate to override the advice of your physician... however 160 is a low level; especially if your Total Cholesterol/HDL ratio is good. Statins have many side effects- so you may want to pay for additional blood work (measuring the types and levels of LDL) and get a second opinion. I will say I also exercise (moderate- walking, yoga four-five times a week and resistance training 2 days per week).
It means that: more you go on plants based diet.. you get lower and lower the cholesterol ❓or ?
My doctor told me that if I follow plants based diet will decrease my cholesterol in around 2-3 months up to one level and then is stopped, if is still high the cholesterol I have to take statins.
It’s TRUE ❓
Thanks 🙏🏻

I've asked myself this question before. My cholesterol is 40 mg/dL. I probably have genetically low LDL which combined with a plant based diet makes my LDL super low.
this level is super healthy and actually 35-70 are the levels we are born with. Low-fat (6-12% of calories coming from fat) plant based diets will usually mantain LDL levels at this range.

What about cholesterol needed for hormone production such as Testosterone and Estrogen?
I’m wondering the same thing
The cholesterol values that you get from a blood test do not represent all cholesterol inside the body. There is no proof that you would struggle producing sex hormones when you have ideal levels of LDL cholesterol (35 to 70).
@@CharlieFader Yeah I was vegan for 6 years and I had high progesterone, so that sex hormone wasn’t lacking lol, but the progesterone-estrogen ratio was off. Since adding back yard raised hen’s eggs back into my diet I’ve balanced that issue. There was a correlation to consider, but I wouldn’t know for certain if that was the cause. Just some food for thought in case any women come across my comment with the same issue and want to give it a try.
@@babianna5609 ok, let's suppose that the value of cholesterol on the test is what matters for your unbalanced hormones (although you didn't mention what your cholesterol levels where at the time). You can easily raise cholesterol without eating eggs, since saturated fats raise cholesterol more than dietary cholesterol.
@@babianna5609 There is no evidence that eggs balance hormones. If that were true, egg companies would be advertising that nonstop. My partner had open heart surgery last year to replace a valve. His arteries were good. He is on a statin as a preventative and is now vegan, so his LDL is under 30.
Your partner should not take too much statins once he is following plants based diet, or to take less or to take every second day. I am not taking at all, only plants based diet. I have a stent for 9 months
On a largely unhealthy, mostly vegetarian (with some fish) diet, with a low dose of a statin (Rosuvastatin 5 mg), I got my LDL cholesterol down to around 50-60 mg/dl. I recently (as in starting on Easter 2024) changed my diet into a diet heavily focused on whole food and plant based food, with a large variety of vegetables and greens, legumes and cruciferous vegetables, berries, nut and seeds. And mushrooms on occasion too. My diet has now drifted into maybe 95% vegan, as with all the things I'm eating now, I don't really crave cheese. The remaining 5% is some occasional dairy products. Just last week I had a blood test, and, still eating my low dose statin, my LDL is 27 mg/dl. 😲😂
I might not need the statin, though I've gotten no side effects from it, and I don't mind at all having my LDL that low. 😎
My diet now looks nothing like the diet I used to still eat just three years ago - which was a Western diet, with way too much meat and processed foods. My health has greatly improved - it improved already by switching from that very unhealthy diet to a mostly vegetarian diet, and now that I've cut out the unhealthy stuff, and included all the good stuff, I'm feeling great, and all the measured values in my bloodwork have moved toward optimal values. I also find myself having more energy, and much less stress and anxiety. I wish I'd have known about this diet, and switched to it years ago. Better late than never, I say.
Can you please do a webinar on this topic.

I qualified for a clinical study for the drug Repatha, a biologic injectable, because I had had both a heart attack and a stroke in my mid-50s. I was already taking Atorvastatin. Right at the start, despite it being a double-blind study, my doctor and I knew I was on the drug because after my first blood work following my enrollment and receiving the "drug," my LDL had dropped to less than 10. It was barely measurable! My cardiologist began to wonder if that was too low. So we gradually started to reduce the Atorvastatin. It wasn't until I had completely stopped taking the statin that the LDL then rose to a range from 20-30, where it has remained since. I've been on Repatha for about 10 years now.
I don't know that much about Repatha, but apparently it was developed after discovering that despite the high fat and cholesterol diets of Inuit people, they had very low coronary disease rates. It was related to an enzyme I think genetically inherited. So the enzyme was synthesized and a study launched, of which I became part of. When I came out of the study I had to fight my insurance company to get it covered so I could continue to receive Repatha. It was covered by my plan, but I didn't meet the parameters to qualify for the drug - I didn't have any measurable plaque or calcification of arteries. But of course I didn't meet the parameters because I had already been taking the drug for more than 6 years! My cardiologist prevailed and now my insurer covers it. I inject the Repatha once every two weeks. I wonder if this UA-cam channel has any videos about Repatha?

For lunch and dinner I have either lentil soup, chhole, rajma made of white or kidney beans, or lentil pasta - no oil and no salt; only spices (including annatto, turmeric, black pepper, and whole ginger, garlic, and onion). 250 grams dry legume weight.

Great simple video to share with people. But I agree with others that the title is Clickbait and a irrelevant to the subject…
So......is LDL more important than HDL?.....or is there a synergy between the two that is more important to maintain than just keeping LDL low?
I believe so, as some say HDL is not as protective as we once thought. As LDL falls, so will HDL, but raising HDL will not lower LDL. Unless we find otherwise, it's all about the LDL. If you focus on that, you'll be just fine. In other words, if you do the good things you need to lower LDL, diet, exercise, and yes in some cases even drugs, then you'll be rewarded with good health and longevity.
We shouldnt care for HDL but only LDL value.

Not all plants are good for everyone. I have been WFPB for 7 years and have joint pains when I eat tomatoes or strawberries. I have other food sensitivities also and just avoid them. You may have needed to sort out what foods work best for you. Just be sure to avoid added oils and have some raw foods every day too. I feel great on a plant based lifestyle.

I thought that cholesterol is important for brain and hormonal function. Too low may not be that good. Plaque I read can be cleaned from the arteries with a plant diet and changed lifestyle. Nathan Pritikin at his autopsy had clean arteries when early in his life they were clogged.
The idea that typical plaque can be cleaned from arteries is far from proven. Yes, I have read the published studies of Dean Ornish and Dr. Esselstyn. However if you closely examine the work and pics, you will come to have a healthy skeptisism. BTW, Pritikin did not go from clogged arteries to "clean" arteries. That is completely unsubstantiated.
Read the extensive controversy about who did his autopsy and what was their agenda.
But, just go read the main Ornish study and you will see how over rated the idea of physical removal of plaque is.
The Ornish study was very small. Only 20 subjects in the experimental wing. Further divide into tertiles (1/3, 1/3, 1/3)
1/3 got zero removal of plaque. 1/3 got 3% removal of plaque. 1/3 got 7% removal of plaque.
Overall average was 3% removal.
So if you had a 80% blockage, you would only expect that to lower to a 77% blockage over 5 strict years.f
Hardly the kind of "clean arteries" that the Pritikin autopsy purported to show.
Much much more on this subject. But all in all, if you take your diet down to less than 10% fat and less than 10 mg cholesterol, then you might get a 3% reduction over 5 years., Far from having clean arteries.
Safe prudent assumption is that if you do everything right, and add in a statin, that you can halt the progression of plaque and improve the condition/thickness of the walls of your dangerous areas.
Both good goals.

Can you please have an open discussion with Ivor Cummins or Dr. Malcolm Kendrick on your show ... I trust all 3 of you, but you guys seem to have come to opposite conclusions about LDL, which is driving me nuts. Ivor is a trustworthy engineer who has done extensive research, and follows a high fat diet, which appears to have served him well, according to his calcium (CAC) score, even though his LDL is high. I think their argument is that atherosclerosis is an inflammatory disease, that the arterial plaques are a result of clotting/inflammation, and not LDL buildup. You guys do overlap a lot - they advocate natural whole foods, and bash processed foods. My hunch is that you're vegan for ethical reasons, and that biases you against animal fats.
#BoycottMeat and all other animal products of cruelty and exploitation in any way possible!
Mice died for all that grain you eat.
To reduce lung cancer risk, all one had to do was stop smoking. One item. To reduce heart disease, one has to stop eating virtually everything SAD provides. And for most people having a plant based diet is an incredibly difficult prospect that one has to stay on top of day in and day out. I’ve been a vegan for 5 years; eliminated a few diseases like diabetes and heart, but I struggle every day to stay a vegan. I won’t pretend that I don’t like meat, dairy, fast food and the rest. It’s very, very hard.
I’m lucky that almost everything is easy about eating plant based for me, except keeping the fats low. I like olive oil and fatty snacks more than I wish I did.
@@sidilicious11 Eating healthy is really easy for me too. It’s not eating unhealthy in the meantime that’s hard.
@@Anarcath It's because you still think of animal products as food. Try to think of the animals, not just your health. Watch some factory farm footage. You have to de-program your mind of carnism. Watch the TED Talk by Dr Melanie Joy to understand carnism.
Yikes! So glad I went vegan almost 4 years ago
A vegetarian diet with high quality eggs is healthier than plant based vegan.
Nope. But please explain the difference between a high quality egg and a low quality egg.
@@jussilahteenmaki3475 the nutritional value is far lower in eggs that come from unhealthy chicken. The food they eat needs to be organic with no chemicals and they also need to be happy chickens.
Even if thats true, it doesnt change anything because both eggs are oxydized cholesterol bombs, this is the real problem.
@@LincolnClay98 Do you have a source? But eggs are full of cholesterol. That is never healthy.
@@jussilahteenmaki3475 yes I do, the source is called common sense.
Meat eaters dying makes me smile
