Short story about my own introduction to this car. A couple years ago I went to a man's house in my local area to buy a used polisher I found on FB marketplace. After paying him I was about to leave, when I realized I'd under-payed him $20. I knocked on his door again to make things square, and he appreciated my honesty enough to open up his garage to show me what he had. And a Vantage V550 was sitting there, dark red with cream interior and wood trim. At the time I didn't really realize what I was looking at as I wasn't yet familiar with the Vantage V550 model, but when I went home and did a quick google search on it I couldn't believe how rare and amazing a car I'd stumbled upon. So butch and beautiful at the same time. He let me sit in it too. I've been fascinated with this model ever since.
That's exactly what hooked me nearly 30 years ago, that video when the shutters raised at Newport Pagnelland this thing rolled lut like a space ship.. It's been my dream car until I managed to buy the car above. I wanted someone skilled and qualified like James to bring it back to the masses. Glad you enjoyed my car 😊
Walking across Oxford Circus many years ago, I heard a sound like a dragon breathing. It was one of these sitting at the traffic lights. What an incredible sound!
Hi Kristian, I totally agree with your comment and that's why I bought this car in the video. If you're ever near Yorkshire in the summertime let me know and I'll take you for a spin in it.
@@CraigMcB68 that’s a very kind gesture, as you don’t c the v550 on the roads, I don’t recall ever cing one. It’s my favourite super car, my dream car is an ls3 vxr8, or an lsa, again cars you never c on the roads. Also more important they all are manual transmissions. I hate driving automatic cars they do nothing 4 me. True driving enthusiasts will always prefer manual cars. I don’t care about 2.5 0-60 times. Knock a second or two off that and give me a manual every time..
What a glorious automobile! In the day, I thought that these were the shizzle, the ultimate Brute in a Suit... In all the years that followed, nothing has come close to the sheer majesty of these cars. Thanks for the review, and congratulations on the 300k. Day made...
In the early days of Top-Gear magazine they did a head-to-head of the Vantage vs the the Bentley Conti R - the Aston was always the one for me. I pored through that article over and over until the copy literally disintegrated. Every bit of it is seared into my brain for eternity and now the sound of the engine under heavy load in your video has joined it!
I remember seeing a V550 at the Motor show and the NEC. I was in awe just looking at he engine bay and wondered how Aston Martin managed to shoehorn in those two huge superchargers. To me this is one of the most iconic Aston’s every produced in my lifetime. I really want one !
Stumbled upon this in a mayfair dealership as a lost 19yo wandering around London some 25y ago. The sheer size and muscularity of the thing stopped me in my tracks. It felt like swimming next to a whale shark. Proper British monster this thing. Up there with the Bentley Turbo R for presence!
Without doubt my favourite all time car. Can't think of anything that screams "Made in England" louder than that. Utterly glorious...... Great video - thanks....
Glad you enjoyed my car being revisited. All these comments from 40 and 50 years old like myself who fell in love with Clarkson's video make me really happy that I got James to feature it.
I remember a red one if these adorning the pages of a "supercars" book I had as a child......I fell in love then and this video keeps me just as smitten
These are practically perfect looking, I've always felt. The only change I would make would be to leave the Scirocco lights from the Virage on it, which I felt fit the car far better. I saw that Clarkson video where he test drove the prototype Vantage that was cobbled together by Aston from a Virage that was exactly that and it was just as great looking as I thought.
Congratulations on 300,000 subscribers, James! So glad to have been along for the ride for some years now. Also, I didn't really know much about this old Aston, but needless to say, the V550 line oozes classic British charm, just with some 90s sauce. Not a bad thing at all, mind you!
This has been one of my favourite cars since I was about 10 when I saw it on a Clarkson VHS in 1996, it’s easily still in my top 10. Saw one in London in the late 90’s and the dude driving it wasn’t sparing the horses! 🐎
That's the same Clarkson video thst got me hooked. I saw those shutters go up at the old Newport Pagnell factory and the V550 rolled out, it was like a space ship compared to older models. That video was with me until I managed to buy the car in the video. I'm so glad I got James to review it. So many positive comments and people quoting that Clarkson review. Seems it wasn't only me who was obsessed with the old girl all these years.
I`m a lot older but I fell in love with it then too, with Pink Floyd`s Welcome To The Machine playing as it rolled out .. I have to disagree with Gem though , the pale metallic green looks better than the BRG.
I've been watching a ton of videos on the channel. I think what I appreciate the most is just the delivery. Don't get me wrong, the content is awesome, but Jay's presentation thereof is second to none.
The seats are Recaro CSE (or similar) which had the switches on the lower bolster so it's not really an Aston thing. Those style of seats are a real highlight for me on the older upper end stuff, mostly German, real genuine retro chique!
What a car! Even taking into account the interior parts bin mish mash, the engine is a work of art and like most Aston's, it looks gorgeous. Thanks for sharing.
The thing is by the time Clarkson reviewed this his work was already starting to become more about his creative thought processes, and less about the actual cars. This review is excellent, thank-you.The Vantage 550 (being 43) was my childhood dream car.
I'm sure I remember reading/seeing when I was a kid that one of these was the chosen steed of a certain Prince Charles? Yes Mercedes, we were building a 500+hp supercharged V8 before the madcap R230 SL55 AMG. An absolute classic Jayemm and I really enjoyed the video!
I remember knowing about Vantage back during the GranTurismo 2 days. Back then I really don't understand why would I pay a lot more for Vantage than the prettier DB7. I think now I have grown out of that phase and found new appreciation for these British bulldogs.
I'm so glad that you enjoyed the review of my car. I thought that I was only one of a few people who have beenobsessed with this classic Aston. So many positive comments and so much love for the V550. 🙏🏻
Truly an amazing car - I remember going to see this at the Earls Court Motor Show and was blown away not only by the car, but also by the engine that was on a separate stand... It was HUGE and looked like something stolen out of a very big truck! Just everything I thought and still do, that an Aston should be - a true great and as you say, at the moment, great "Value".... LOL
I remember going out in a Le Mans back in about 2005 when I worked there. Lovely thing. It was about 0 degrees in December and putting your foot down in 3rd at 100 was scary as the back kicked out. A fantastic, beautiful, most memorable car. I'd love to own one.
This car was featured in one of my first car magazines, Buckinghamshire green with magnolia leather. Been my all time favorite since then. Still have that magazine. Thanks for the review!
I want to say a huge thanks to you! There seems to be no coverage of this gen of astons anywhere. I saw almost every gen of Astons in the flesh, certainly on the videos, but never this one. Only few pictures of it in one of my kids cars book and thats it. You just uncovered a mistery to me! This car exist and its as great as I imagined ❤
Glad that you enjoyed my car! Half the reason that I invited James to feature it is to remind and bring it back to the attention of the masses. It really is a phenomenal car. All these postibe comments have made my year.
Funny, a few days ago youtube recommended me the review of this car by Clarkson in 1993 and loved the design and sound. Now your doing a review of maybe the very same one. What a noise and design, great to see it in decent video quality and in this much detail!

My daily Jaguar S-Tyoe 2.7d, my MGF and my Rover 200 BRM. A little cult car. That is the beauty of British cars, there is something to enjoy for every budget.
My friend used to work for Murray Aston Martin in Edinburgh. His boss had a V600 and let him drive it. Let's say it was a memorable experience. What a car. I have only seen one once in the wild and though we hadn't met we pretty much figured it was my friend. Same colour combo as your V550. Beautiful.
OMG you finally got your hands on this beast!!! I remember a car mag at the time said it made 60s American muscle cars seem limp wristed. It is an awsome car , and V600 I remember reviews and price was huge. No driver aides , no silly tech and touch screens.
i'm afraid I can't offer you anything exotic to drive as the cars you drive but GOD I just cannot get enough of your videos . As a nation we are and were extremely good at producing automotive masterpieces . Excellent work yet again 👊
Congratulations on marking it to 300,000 subscribers. I've been watching your channel for 3-4 years and it's one of my favourites and I look forward to the next video always. Onwards and upwards to half a million now?
There used to be a guy who lived near me that had one in a very similar colour scheme. He traded a Countach for it. He took me out in both and I fell in love with the AM.
Back in the late 90s my boss had one of these (in blue) and I had the chance to drive it on a number of occasions... absolutely magnificent if a little intimidating in the wet!
Firstly, congrats on the 300k! Secondly, you’ve no idea how much I’d like to take those superchargers, port and polish them and reinstall them with blitz intakes, the noises would be biblical!
This could well be the vantage I queued up to sit in at the London motor show. I waited what seemed like ages to ask for a closer look and a sit within the cordoned off zone and the Head salesman could NOT have been more welcoming even giving me a brochure and answering my prying questions-especially as I stood out as a 15yr old amongst the vip would be owners in their saville row suits! I will never forget the view of that vast bonnet and the red and gold flake in the deep green paint!! I hope I’m right in thinking this is that car?? ?? It was incredible
Omg. I really think it is. Love it And thank you for doing my childhood memories justice Top Man Jay 👌🏻 And of course a big thank you to the new custodian- Top Man Sir

This is the definition of " brute in a suit" ! Love everything about this V550....This and a late ( 1989 - 91) Aston Martin v8 Vantage are more desirable than the modern day v8 vantage to my eyes. If I was forced to pick one it'd be a 1991 v8 Vantage.......Great cars one and all.......Bravo Aston !
Thank you for your comment. It's all the comments like yours that make me so happy that I got James to review my car. I thought that it was only me who was obsessed with this car all these years 😂
One of my favourite cars from the late 90's. I remember Clarkson saying it only needed 6th gear because of the huge torque you could pull away in sixth and just leave it there. Think the only thing more crazy at the time was a Lister Storm and good luck k finding one of those to test 😅
Brilliant video - fantastic subject matter! This and the 355 were my two absolute dream cars throughout the 90s!!! Thank you sooo much for this one James!!! Would love for you to get chance to drive a manual V8 or ideally a V8 Vantage (70s/80s). The manual box transforms this series over the auto you’ve driven already.
I really, really enjoyed watching you drive and all the discriptions. I saw first prototype at Birmingham NEC in 1992. Had a photographe with one of the Chief engineers. This car and the Aston Martin V8 Vantage V600, just before the LM was introduced. It's undeniablely my favorite. Later, the Vanquish models and DB7. Some how, the X pack Vantage also. I bought many Car magazines in which these models appeared. Nice for sharing your awesome videos.
At last, you get this gem of a car on the channel Jay. Many thankyou's. The V550 is absolute class and nothing has come close since then. Looking forward to a possible V600 vantage video this next 12 months.
Really happy that you enjoyed my car being featured by James, he was 100% the right guy to review it. All these positive comments about my car have made my year. Thank you 🙏🏻
What a spectacular car I would put the noise this aston makes up with the Maserati v8. Massive hats off to the owner for bringing it over and actually driving the like its meant to

That is the beauty of British cars, there is something to enjoy for every budget.
Congrats with the 300k. You've earned it. Great review. I want one.
Congratulations on the 300k subscribers. Well deserved 👍🏻
Beautiful.
Mad, I just watched something on this car this week and hadn't seen anything since clarksons unleashed video. To me, my absolute favourite car
Oh my god Jay, this is my favourite car of all time! I have been waiting for years for someone to review one! Thank you!
It was my absolute pleasure
@@JayEmmOnCars I still have the Unleashed on cars and top gear supercars VHS videos because of this car lol!
Thank you for your comment. It's amazing how much love there is out there for the old girl. I'm so happy I got James to review my car. Thank you 🙏🏻
This was my dream car and started my love of Astons. Thanks James ive made my son watch it too and he is in awe. Congratulations on the 300k 😁
Happy that you enjoyed revisiting this amazing car. As the owner, I can say that it's absolutely lived up to the dream.
OMG you finally got your hands on this beast!!!
I remember a car mag at the time said it made 60s American muscle cars seem limp wristed.
It is an awsome car , and V600 I remember reviews and price was huge.
No driver aides , no silly tech and touch screens.
So happy with all the positive comments about my car. Thank you 🙏🏻. James was absolutely the right guy to review it.
Been waiting for this one. Thanks Jay.
My favourite all time car. The sound and looks are beyond anything else, a true British bruiser!
One of my all time favourite Aston Martin's, an amazingly beautiful car.
One of the best videos of yours and an all time old favourite car of mine
Love it
It feels like you put out a new video every day. What a channel. Have recommended you as the new host for Top Gear. They need you and Savage Geese
Great review Jay. I have a new Vantage, but I sure would like to add an older Vantage like this to the collection!
i'm afraid I can't offer you anything exotic to drive as the cars you drive but GOD I just cannot get enough of your videos .
That's the plan! Thanks for being a part of it
I remember this was a car mod for the original Test Drive Unlimited. I fell in love with it in an instant.
There used to be a guy who lived near me that had one in a very similar colour scheme. He traded a Countach for it. He took me out in both and I fell in love with the AM.
Dreamt about these astons as a kid. The last true astons.fully hand built... Incredible craftsmanship beyond engine considerations.
It sounds absolutely glorious! Amazing car!
Absolutely agree with your review btw I had requested that you do a review of this rare beauty in the comments last week, so imagine my surprise!
Wow. Never heard of this car before. That’s a badass power unit.
Back in the late 90s my boss had one of these (in blue) and I had the chance to drive it on a number of occasions... absolutely magnificent if a little intimidating in the wet!
What a car, thanks for taking us along for a ride! 🙏🙏 Congrats on the 300k!
These medium old Aston's have real presence. Kind of like driving a Victorian sitting room around but looks super cool.
Firstly, congrats on the 300k! Secondly, you’ve no idea how much I’d like to take those superchargers, port and polish them and reinstall them with blitz intakes, the noises would be biblical!
I might take you up on that 😂
This could well be the vantage I queued up to sit in at the London motor show.
It's very possible!
Omg. I really think it is.
Love it
And thank you for doing my childhood memories justice
Top Man Jay 👌🏻
And of course a big thank you to the new custodian- Top Man Sir
Boyzee, it was my pleasure. Likewise, James was 100% the right guy to review my car. Glad you enjoyed it. If you're ever up in Yorkshire in the summertime give me a shout and you can relive that view and I'll take you for a drive. It's comments like yours that have made my year and so happy that we did the video.
@@CraigMcB68 I’m still chuckling through the adrenaline of reading your kind reply. It really was a fantastic review especially as I believed I knew of the car. They are so very rare and special they just aren’t seen unfortunately. I say with great pleasure I would naturally be a fool to not take you up on your gentlemanly offer so I’m counting on you keeping her!! At least until next summer please!
That really would be incredible so thank you. That has made my whole week.
Sean
Thats really nice of you to offer him a ride. Top bloke.@CraigMcB68
Congrats James on the 300K well earned, and well deserved. Thanks.
I just watched the V550 and V600 concidentally Jay Emm uploaded
Love, love, love this car. You never see good videos on them. Thanks for changing that James!
So happy that I let James review my car
It's all the positive comments like yours that made me happy we did the video. So much love out there for the old girl. Thank you 🙏🏻
This is the definition of " brute in a suit" ! Love everything about this V550....This and a late ( 1989 - 91) Aston Martin v8 Vantage are more desirable than the modern day v8 vantage to my eyes. If I was forced to pick one it'd be a 1991 v8 Vantage.......Great cars one and all.......Bravo Aston !
lol there was no Vantage in 89-91
@@RoverWaters You sure pal ?. ..have a Google.
At the time I never knew it had so much; power, which even today 30 years later is still impressive
Yes Yes Yes thank you for featuring this, money no object one of my very favourite, sounds wonderful
OMG!!!
My favourite Aston Martin ever built!!!
Thank you soooo much!!!
Thank you for your comment. It's all the comments like yours that make me so happy that I got James to review my car. I thought that it was only me who was obsessed with this car all these years 😂
Congratulations on the 300 subscribers James 🎉
Clarkson thought the same
I really, really enjoyed watching you drive and all the discriptions.
Thank you 🙏🏻
A long time petrol head but this is a first for me. What a beauty.
Dunno who you bribed to get hold of my (currently) favorite Aston, but well done Jamie!
Now on to the video!
I offered her up. I just thought that it was about time we brought her back to the masses. Hope you enjoyed the video.
Gracias senor Craig!
What a beast...I want one.@@CraigMcB68
Congratulations on 300k! You so deserve it James. You are a great You Tuber and a thoroughly nice chap. 👍
What a spectacular car I would put the noise this aston makes up with the Maserati v8. Massive hats off to the owner for bringing it over and actually driving the like its meant to
