Watching this one again, as I'm going to be using these for the first time in the next few weeks. Blum's instructions are confusing as hell, glad to hear how they work in plain English. Thanks dude!
Haha, yeah the instructions are insane. Glad I could help!
Blum and hafele
InstaBlaster.
Same here man. I spend few days with Blum manual to understand how to mount this. After this video everything went clearer for me. Cheers for good work and from Eastern Europe.
Hey, this was great from the top down. Explanations were clear and easy to follow/understand and the production quality was excellent. Thank you
Three things:
A. Great video as always
2. Thanks for the tips
D. Keep em coming!!
Now that is a list I can understand! Thanks Scott!
Planning to use these when I redo my kitchen, great info!
Ah man, you are going to love them!
Nice to see those superb drawer slides used by a youtube creator. And yes, I struggled the frist time, i struggled the second time and finally the third time I installed them i got it figured out! Definitely worth it!
Sounds very familiar! They are a great product for sure!
The only thing better than your videos is that we are probably very close in age and the generational references really take me back. You have a way of concealing a lot of technical information by your laid back delivery. Awesome work, I can't wait to see how much content you're going to be able to push out of the shop. Your transition has felt totally seamless.
That is awesome! I always wonder if my references are entertaining to anyone. And glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching!
Thanks Shaun, I just completed 30 drawers . Your info helped me get stared then after a couple of test runs I had my system sorted and just hit autopilot. Great work and thank you again.
Thanks Shaun! Doing these this weekend and glad that this video existed!
First time installing these slides. Very helpful video, thanks!
Setting the height adjustment to the middle position is a good tip. Thanks, Sean!
This video rocks. I was scratching my head trying to figure out how to install my slides... Thank you for posting such a detailed explanation 🙌
Happy to hear it! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the video, Shaun! This made it so much easier than reading the manual!
Right on, glad to hear it! Thanks for watching!
Great video I just picked up 8 of these to use on a custom closest build and I'm sure I will be watching this a few times while installing them lol
Just installed four pairs of these slides in a kitchen island I built. This video was so helpful! Once you've made one drawer box to fit these slides, it's actually a really easy process. Thanks, Shaun!
Right on, glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching!
I use a no math method for determining the width of my drawers for under mount slides. First, I install the slides. Then I pull out the two slide rails a few inches and carefully measure from the outside of one rail to the outside of the other rail. This is the width of the drawer box front and rear pieces. Easy and error proof.
Great tip, thanks!
Another great video Shawn! Thanks for taking us along with this install. I have been wanting to give these slides a try, now may just go for it. Thanks again
Awesome! Glad you enjoyed it. Once you do it a couple times, they start to make way more sense.
Perfect explanation !! Have installed tons of them. The only way to go. NO klickety klack . True craftsman only use them !!!
Mr. Boyd, I just want to say THANKYOU; for the informative video on how to: I'm a newbie for sure and was able to do 6 drawers!!
Awesome, glad it helped!
When I see the complication of attempting to add or subtract sixteenths etc coming from the UK I am so glad we changed to metric in the 70’s. When I visit my son in Houston and have work to do I always bring my metric tapes with me, the main reason being one measurement only ie millimetres. I was brought up half my life with the imperial system and the rest in metric, and can appreciate both methods, but in no circumstances would I revert back to inches. Great video. Keep up the work pleasure to watch
Yeah, there are definitely aspects of the imperial system that I like, but I think if I had the choice, metric would be the way to go. Just having consistency across everything would be worth the switch, but unfortunately I don't see that happening anytime soon.
This Texan does everything in metric. It just seems crazy not to.
Thank you Shaun, your video is even more useful than the Blum's official one. I ordered some blumotions for our vanity and will install them next weekend, I'm trying to find a good instruction and what a coincidence :) . Cheers
Good to hear! Glad it will help!
Thanks for the video! I'd like to try this among with some dovetail joints
Awesome video, very informative..I really appreciate videos like this!
I know it is a pretty specific topic, so happy to hear you dig it!
Just rebuilt kitchen drawers using standard full extension slides. Turned out great but my wife wants pots and pans drawers next and I think these will be great
Yes, first time struggling. Thanks great info.
If your being lazy and feeling a void.. have no fear .. here's comes a new video made by Shaun Boyd!!!.. Good stuff .. Thx for sharing Shaun
Solid rhyme! Thank you!
Amazing. Thanks for the clear description and great pacing.
Thanks for watching!
Love the "Home Alone" reference: A, 2, and D
😜
Came for the music, stayed for the Katz-Moses clips
Came here because you told me to Jonathan.. Now I have to buy more stuff.. thanks a lot!
Music was decent, but that JKM clip was on point. And thanks for stopping in, Keith!
Music is just a bit too loud. Detracts from the overall video when talking.
Shaun! Your videos are fantastic! Thank you! :)
Very helpful! Especially since I am about to install three drawers in my wife's new built-in bookshelf. Wish me luck!
Right on, glad to hear it. Good luck!
Great Video Shaun! very helpful thanks!
Thanks Jon! Glad to hear it!
Love that you share your knowledge but also that make us giggle with your rhymes 😂
Glad you enjoyed it! Got to have a little fun with it!
Great video! I appreciate the help. The dresser I am building is going to have these slides
Just about to do some drawers again so come back for a refresher
Excellent tutorial 👌🏽👍🏽
Many thanks, this was really helpful
after i got confused by blum sending me german instructions I couldnt make annything out of, you explained it pretty well, thanks!
Glad to hear it, thanks!
I loved these slides 🥰
They work like a charm!
These are all I use on all of my cabinets. They're more expensive than other slides but screw cost. If perhaps several hundred dollars on my kitchen cabinets is a deal killer than I really don't want to deal with these people as clients.
I have used Chinese knockoffs before with both side mount and undermount slides and have regretted it.
I've never had any problems with any Blum products, hinges or drawer slides. They have done the R and D on their hardware so I choose to honor their integrity buy using their product.
Thanks for the video
Shaun, you are a born teacher! Thank you for all you do for all of us. Best, @HoneyOnWales
Really appreciate that! I really enjoy spreading the knowledge I have gained over the years from so many other people, so I am happy to hear people are enjoying it!
I like these! Nice clean look!
Yeah, I love that they are completely concealed.
Great explanation and presentation of a great slide. I use them exclusively on my custom cabinetry and my customers love them.
There's also another adjustment point you didn't mention. At 5:35 you can see gray cams on the back of the slides that will allow the back of the box to be adjusted up and down. This comes in handy with a bank of full overlay drawer fronts to get them all lined up so the top of one drawer is on the same plane as the bottom of the drawer above it. Sometimes one drawer slide can be installed a degree or two off from level and won't be exactly parallel to the one above/below it which will cause the drawer faces not to be flush. This adjustment solves the problem without having to remount the slide.
Yeah, I probably should have talked about the rear adjustment, but I use it so rarely, I left it out. At most I do a couple drawers, so it often isn’t an issue, but you are right it can be very useful. Thanks for watching!
All of a sudden I am glad I was born in a country that uses metric...
Haha, fair enough.
100%
@@shaunboydmadethis is there a special ruler or measuring tape you can get 1/32 or you just did it by eye?
Because these were engineered in Austria, using metric. If they were an American product, the Europeans would be the furious ones.
Me, I switch to metric when dealing with Euro-designed hardware. Canada, best of both worlds.
Thiago Locatelli not needed, most rulers show tick marks at 1/16, 1/32 is between those and it’s so small marking width will influence it so at that size time for micrometer if that level of accuracy is needed.
nice explanation. I've always felt their catalog is one of the most daunting out there. I liked the arrows... J
Thanks Jay! Yeah it definitely feels intimidating the first couple times.
Nice table saw sled
Shaun, thank you for the video. I love how you explain things in detail. I am a beginner and I want to do all my cabinet? unfortunately here in Guam we have lots of termites so I am using a composite material from home depot. Do you have any videos on a beginners level?
Thanks Shaun for this great video! An acquaintance of mine works for the company blum, so I get these wonderful drawer slides at a very reasonable price! 😍 Unfortunately I discovered your video just now. Because I built two drawers wrong (they were my very first drawers!). Only the third one was correct. 🤣
Nice! That is a good friend to have. The third time is a charm! Thanks for watching!
Thank you for your video
Ahh...math, math, math! Makes my heart happy my life's work is not wasted :-)
It always validates me when you enjoy my math-heavy videos! Thanks, man!
Thank you!
Nice video - thanks! In final install for overlay drawers, should drawer box front be slightly inset, flush or slightly proud of face frame. Manual says 1/8" setback, which is probably good for 1/2" stock. But mine are 5/8" and sit slightly proud. I'm guessing to slide back another 1/16-1/8" and make flush. Thoughts?
Love the Home Alone reference!
Thanks for the nice info
Thanks for watching!
I think I might need the Special Ed Class on this one !!! Excellent Video !!! Lol.
Haha, I felt the same way the first couple times I used them! Thanks for watching, Steve!
Nice video Shaun. Why not cut the recesses in the back before you assemble the drawers? That's the way I was taught to do it.
Thanks Guy! Yeah, I know a lot of people use drawer designs with the back panel shorter than the rest and that pretty much eliminates the need to cut the notches. This is just how I have always done it, I don't think I really have a reason haha!
Will these stop my wife and kids slamming the car doors like they want to break them whenever we go anywhere? 😎 Nice vid man, will try these one day🥓
Somebody needs to get on that! There must be some fancy car that has it. Thanks Rob!
Great video
Thanks!
I want to use these for my computer keyboard tray on a deal I'm building. Wonder if I can make them work.
Helpful. Thanks. Mine will be 18". Wish me luck.
Now I feel less dumb, and I’m ready to try these drawer slides from Blum.
Nice - Thanks
Thanks so much for the video! Super helpful. Question for ya: I just ordered a bundle of the 21" tandem slides (h series, for 5/8 max drawer box thickness) for a kitchen island I built. The center compartment of that island is ~30" wide and will house two deep drawers and one shallower drawer. Do you think I should build those drawer boxes using 3/4" material, rather than the 1/2" I'd been planning on?
If I ever think there is going to be an issue, I always tend to go thicker. Those sound like they will be fairly large drawers, so going with thicker material will definitely help. That being said, using 3/4" material with the H version of the slides might cause a bit of a headache, but it is doable. Thanks for watching!
Great video! Thanks so much for sharing such helpful insights. A quick question. At 2:34 into the video you discuss drawer box width. When making a drawer for a cabinet with a face frame, do you measure the carcass inside width or use the inside dimension of the face frame. Thanks again!
Thanks! I don't often do face frame cabinets, but as far as I know with these slides, you are always measuring the opening width of where the drawer will be installed.
Thank you sir 👍
Thanks for watching!
Thanks Shawn for the video, I'm making new kitchen cabinets and the Blum undermounts are just super smooth. I got to cheat a little with no countertop on yet so I could do little tweaking easily. My question is a little different. I bought some big box brand soft close hinges and they haven't got enough adjustment to bring the door nice and close to the cabinet frame, with your experience what do you feel is a good choice soft close hinge for a face frame with 1/2 inch overlay? thanks for the great content you put on you tube
Nice! They are great slides, for sure. I also use Blum for all of my hinges, they make a bunch of different versions for all different cabinet applications.
How do you know how far back from the outer surface of the face frame to set the slide. Depends on false front thickness, but how to figure the amount of setback?
do you mind sharing the measurements of your jig used for the locking pins?
thanks for this information, I'm ready to install it in my new bathroom cabinants....rofl. had to. nice vid!
Hi Shaun. How do one install runners onto an old-fashioned desk drawer that was made without - just sliding wood on wood?
“A)....”
Got it.
“2)....”
Wait, what?
“And D)....”
LOL!
I say it the same. "I wouldn't let you sleep in my room if you were growing on my ass."
Or sh*t Buzz says. From Home Alone.
Hi there, have a quick question can you add soft close drawer slides to existing dresser drawers?
The drawer/cabinet door fronts look fantastic and very unique. Could you please do a video on how to make those? Thanks.
Thanks! I go over making them near the beginning of this video: ua-cam.com/video/3DWvjWrk0co/v-deo.html
Sean, great video and demo; best I've seen on blum slides to date. I'm trying my first tip on's today and am struggling with bottom clearance. These are floor level blum movento drawers, recessed into the cabinet platform and meant to sit flush with the kick. So, a little toe touch and a drawer slides out at floor level with flat pans and such. Have you done a tip on/movento set up and if so, do you know the clearance from the bottom of the drawer?
I have not done something like that, though it sounds pretty clever! Wish I had some info for you, good luck with it!
Thanks! nice, clear video and presentation style. One question: The slides look like they connect to the box walls so why do you have a shelf underneath the drawer? I'm looking to use these for a walk in closet and I don't want drawer fronts so it would be nice to skip the fixed shelf under the drawer.
Thanks! That cabinet was just for the example. They can definitely just be connected to the cabinet sides. That is actually how I usually use them.
An idea I had,but I’m sure someone else has done the same thing is this. I put a little spreadsheet together and all I have to do is plug in the drawer opening height and width and it spits out the sizes of the front and back panel and sides sizes. I use a 1/4 in lock joint so that’s added in as well .... I find that it prevents screwups ..... I don’t do these that often and it helps. Thanks for the video
That is a great idea! Might have to do something like that. Thanks for watching!
Hey Shaun…. How do I know what height to deduct from my 4” face frame height, when I build my drawers. I am using these slides.
Can Drew still close smoothly with soft close hinges if the drawers themselves are not actually square? I have a 70+ year-old bathroom vanity I’m working on and I’m having problems.
Clear, concise, info dense. I need a wide and shallow drawer under my workbench top to store measuring and marking devices. Also need the skills required to do it. Much closer now as you’ve cleared a good bit of my fog around drawer installs with this one. A fog that months of watching other creators vids on the subject hasn’t made a dent in. Bravo.
Question: at the 4:00 minute mark you used a hacked Irwin clamp as a stop on your 48” wide crosscut sled? Love it. Want it. How’d you make it?
Thank you! That is really cool to hear, as sometimes I wonder if I am making any sense when explaining stuff like this. The clamp is actually a Dewalt tracksaw clamp, but I use it all the time as a stop, here is a link to it amzn.to/2XEIDqO
Thank You
Thank you!
I want to make pull out kitchen drawers. I am repurposing old drawers. Most are flat bottom. Also, some cabinets don't have a side. I cannot find one video for my project.
Blum. Best drawer slides and hinges you can buy! 👍
Btw how on earth can you measure with inches?? 🤪 Use milimeters man, will save u lots of headache... 😃😃😃
They make a great product! And yeah, living in the US kind of makes it mandatory, unfortunately.
I know! Just kidding...
so what if the box is already made, and you are wanting to convert the drawer from side mounted slides to a bottom slide? My Drawer bottom is flat and flush so there really isn't a place for the notch in the back The drawer front does have a lip that appears to be about 1/2 inch. I assume that would allow the soft close mechanism to attatch like shown in the video. As long as the back can attach somehow, I see no reason why it would not work, and I could simply screw it into the flush bottom piece. Does this sound doable?
Good informative video. At 3.43 marker - I see the carved panel doors. Can you pl. tell how you build it? Or if a place to order it? What's it called?
Thanks for watching! I make those doors in this video, ua-cam.com/video/3DWvjWrk0co/v-deo.html
Makes it look easy and it is IF everything is square and the wood is not warped (same can be said for any drawer assembly). If the wood is warped the drawer may be torqued
and slightly off square which will make face flush assembly a nightmare. It can be corrected after the glue up by squaring the inside bottom. This is done by using pipe clamps or
similar to square both sides of the bottom inside where the Blum snap hinges mount and the opposite end, then glue the bottom of the drawer to the four sides and leave overnight.
Neat job man. Check out the blum intivo push to open
Really appreciate it! I’ll definitely check those out.
Great video I have a question as to whether you think that the pull of these drawer slides is strong enough to use in a conversion van build out. I don’t want them to fly open on turns. Lol thanks
They are pretty strong, and take a fair tug to get them to come out. Though if it were me, I would probably include some sort of latch or lock to ensure they don't fly open while driving.
Thanks Shaun
I could watch the first 2 seconds of this video over and over. I’ve tried several other slides due to the shortage and NONE slide or maintain momentum like the Blums, it’s not even close. How have other companies not figured that out?
When Shaun takes his hat off... you know it’s all business
Haha, that is very true!
Deducting 13/32 from the opening is not the size of the outside of the drawer is it? It’s not the simple for 5/8ths think material? I thought you had to take the opening, subtract 42mm then add in the thickness of the sides. If I do it this way I don’t get the same size front as you.
Being English I converted from imperial to metric decades ago, and believe me, it simplified mine (and everyone's else's) life no end. I know America is a strange hold out against metric, but I also know American woodworkers who have converted because much of the ironmongery they use like Blum slides and hinges are imported and therefore metric. They have gone wholly metric for consistency and because it is so much less arcane and so much more straight forward. What are your thoughts on this?
i agree metric system is simple and easy and makes more sense
Yeah, there are definitely many days where I wish we had converted to Metric. Honestly for me, it is more about just having one system, whether it is Imperial or Metric, and I actually like aspects of both. I really like the concept of thinking of measurements as parts of a whole with Imperial, but the math with Metric is obviously so much easier. Either way, I try to at least have Metric in my head, so if we ever do switch, I will be ready! Thanks, Dave!
@@shaunboydmadethis In the construction of Metric is less convenient. In Metric one part 10 mm(cm) can to divided by only 2 or 5, as an inteder. In Imperial you can to divided by 2, 3, 4, 6. The math with Metric is easier, it is true, most people use Metric system. About Blum it is high quality furniture fittings, German brands are still widely used - Hettich and Hafele. Do these brands exist in US?
I prefer metric because mm in general are precise enough to almost entirely eliminate decimal and fractions both. Fractions are evil. Even in USA we do all engineering in metric to avoid unit conversion errors. At least my company- not so much NASA.
Thanks man! Just a quick question what software/application you were using in the time stamp 2:15
That is Fusion 360.
Nice one mate. You’ll have to give the Moventos a whirl. They’re perfect for inset drawers as they allow back to front adjustment rather than messing around with the elongated slots on the slide jtself.
Thanks! Yeah, I have definitely been wanting to try those!
More shots of the band saw, lets go!
This one had a serious lack of band saw shots.
@@shaunboydmadethis get you sh*t together boy
My drawers don’t fully close. Any adjustment for that.
Drawer length confusion. It looks to me that the fitting instructions say the drawer box length should be 10mm less than the runner. I’ve seen people saying both on UA-cam I can’t work out what’s correct
Bravo - I wonder how the SAWSTOP can be sold in Europe? Not having the CE mark. Who is the UK retailer of the SawStop?
Thanks! Not sure, but as far as I know, they aren't available in Europe. I live in the US.
Which plunge router do use ? i like your work good video...
There's a link in the description. Great router
Yep, here it is: amzn.to/2x6odyz
Your workshop is bigger than my whole house
Is it possible to use these blumotion undermount glides to retrofit onto existing kitchen face frame drawers that have only a 1/8” gap between the frame face and the side of the drawer?
Probably, but the main thing is making sure the drawers fit the slides. Like I showed in the video, the drawer box needs to be built to very specific dimensions to get these slides to work properly.
LOL! OMG! Imperial is ridiculous! What a disaster. Thanks for the effort. Those drawer fronts at 3:30 are freakin wicked man!
Haha, thanks for watching!
