For Answer is definitely one of the most beloved in what is a very niche series. From a gameplay standpoint, it is probably the most fast-paced, frenetic game that From Software has ever put out. For a big change of pace from the same game, I'd recommend 'Someone is Always Moving on the Surface'.
Armored Core has some amazing bangers and it's always great to see it getting attention, here's to hoping AC6 will be back to its roots when it comes out!
AC :For Answer is easily my favorite AC game. Mostly because if you prove to be a heartless civilian murdering monster on your second playthrough.. (Yees, you can join the bad guys and do a lot of fucked up stuff, like, say, destroying a bunch of civilian colony ships fleeing the planet for fun with an unhinged member of the enemy faction. You do this, your operatorr quits, and in the next mission. (It's the only option) She'll sic 3 of the most powerful, and iconic armored cores at you at the same time. And it's an INCREDIBLY difficult fight.

You have spotted the exact reason I got into Armored Core in the first place. I've known of the franchise through FromSoftware being what it is today with Dark Souls and what not, but it was only when I listened to the completely unpredictable soundtrack that I decided I wanted to get into it. I am so glad you did Cosmos and Remember before Mechanized Memories - I wish I was exposed to the songs in that order.
For such a diverse set of soundtracks, there sure are a whole lot of leitmotif you can pick up on throughout Armored Core. Which kinda tracks with the overarching theme of history repeating itself on an endless river of conflict.
That's so fitting that you mentioned PS1, because that's what AC debuted on - right around the same time as FF7 I think. I only stumbled upon it because it was part of a demo disc that had samples of like 20 different games and it caught my eye (and consequently also got me interested in Gundam Wing and Mecha as a whole) My sincere hope is now that so many more people are fans of FROM because of the Souls games that they will give AC 6 a shot when it drops. The franchise has always been a hidden gem and a big favorite of mine and yeah, combat is typically at a breakneck pace it's so much fun.
@@Malacite man, demo discs were fun stuff. I got introduced to several of my all time favorites through those things. PC Gamer sent out some pretty good ones, too.
I haven't listened to any Armored Core music until I watched this channel so this will be a treat. The guitar tone gave me an apocalyptic feel, there's this tinge that's seems like a pain that's being ignored. It does feel like there's a sliver of hope in the song and the vocals give this some nice intensity. It almost seems like whoever is fighting is doing it for someone, these are just some random thoughts popping into my head. Another thought is that the protagonist maybe? Or the player character is barely holding on. Very nice ending and I was jamming to this the whole time, it's an odd sounding song but it's still in the range of being likeable for me. I'll listen to this a few more times after this video since it sounds great and I like the rhythm and melodies. I'd be interested in learning the context for this since the comments don't seem to give many hints atm.
This is going to skim a lot, and I recommend going through the games to learn yourself. AC4 and FA take place on an Earth that has been ravaged by nuclear radiation and especially ruined moreso by the implementation of Kojima Particles, which might as well be even better nuclear reactors in exchange for salting the world. The mechs you use in these games are special ones that use KP as power called NEXTs with regular mechs being called Normals (on par with previous game Armored Core mechs). NEXTs are usually piloted by company elites or lone mercenaries, and only a few can even exist at a time because their system is so complicated that it has to nightmarishly link directly to the nerves of the pilot to use and there's not many who can handle that without their brain frying. In exchange, NEXTs are so powerful and self sustaining that they could annihilate an army of older generation armored cores on the regular, let alone how many infantry vehicles. The only thing that feasibly opposes a NEXT is another NEXT. In AC4, you basically get rescued from a wreckage and serve the people who helped you as a hired mercenary due to their lack of defense against the big corporations, and end up becoming the best mercenary by the end at the cost of the city you're helping being recognized as a threat and annihilated, all thanks to your success and danger. In FA, humanity has moved 100 million people to the skies in giant ships called Cradles due to the land being uninhabitable. You're another mercenary who manages to outlast and defeat even the original AC4 character in skill, destroying several giant fortresses meant to oppose NEXTs. Your first run is locked to helping the League of Corporations basically prolong the inevitable and keep the Cradles safe from a terrorist group called ORCA. In a second run, you can choose to help ORCA who reveals their plan is to use all of the energy in the Kojima reactors of the Cradles to fire a beam that will clear the atmosphere of deadly remnant Kojima weapons and hopefully pave a way to move to space, but it means humanity has to suffer by adjusting to the irradiated wasteland of Earth again with no power to the Cradles. In another run, you can choose to annihilate all the Cradles yourself and become the last NEXT standing, defeating *all* of the remaining top pilots at once, essentially being the murderer of almost all of humanity with no one left to oppose you. Remember plays in most of the climaxes, but notably in the mission where you destroy all the Cradles. It adds a chilling contrast to no longer being a heroic theme. 4/FA were Miyazaki's directing debut and he pretty much repeats these kind of endings for all of his games with no clear cut good endings. My personal favorite song from 4 and FA is "Fall," a song that plays for the final mission of 4 where the town you're protecting is basically being melted while you fight the boss, a sub plot where another rising mercenary is being used as a blackmailed pawn to destroy your town even though he doesn't want to.
@@kylele23 I know I'm late but man this is chilling when you think of the context, the vocals make me think they represent humanity crying out. That gives a whole new feeling to the song.
I loooooove AC For Answer. My favorite of the ones I've played in all aspects. This series is definitely more of a cult classic, but the next installment is coming up and now that the dev has blown up since releasing the Souls series we can probably expect a boom in interest. Something a bit more specific to this title is the ethereal quality to it, both in terms of sound and visuals. I've always felt like "ascension", in one way or another, was a major underlying theme to the game.
The quintessential Armored Core song is probably "Shape Memory Alloys", it was in the first 3 games, and got remixes in later games. Hopefully, one day you get to listen to it lol
Ah, tackling Armored Core For Answer, nice! The music in this game is absolutely awesome as this is placed during the most intense parts of the game for which i won't spoil. I've been an Armored Core fan since the ps1 days and For Answer is my favorite. It's an exciting time for Armored Core to make a grand return!!!
I “remember” listening to a gaming podcast review this game and say these was the most annoying song they heard and the game was bad I stopped listening to them
So on your note of being able to imagine how good this song sounds in game compared to the video you're watching, there's actually a fun little detail with that: It actually sounds worse, lol. For some reason, when playing For Answer (at least in my experience), the sound mixing is kinda jank, so you can actually barely hear the music a lot of the time, even with the in-game music volume maxed out. But if you listen to it on the 20th anniversary soundtrack disc, it sounds amazing. Probably my favorite song in the series, actually!
It'd be fun to watch you take a dive into Armored Core gameplay. And all of them are varied in their individual flavor. But Silent Line is a great way to enjoy the PS2 era, AC4/For Answer is much higher paced, kind of like the Dragonball Z of the series.
As much as I respect Cliff Burton (and his influence), I think you made it sound like there weren't influential bassists before, which I quibble with. Chris Squire in particular, had a tremendous influence on later bassists, including Cliff Burton. I don't have anything to add other than that though, since I've never played an Armored Core game before, but I will probably try 6 when it comes out.

4, and in hard mode she apparently cocks a pistol and says "Fine, I'll do it MYSELF" and it's a 5 on 2..
Shit was rough.
The entire Armored Core franchise is a goldmine of bangers. The PS2 era games have great OSTs.
Artificial Sky goes hard!
The bass guitar feel of the songs is always what I remember with From Soft's mecha games.
