Cullen surprised us. And it wasn't just the soup.

- It's a train and a bus (and a lot of hours) to get from Montrose to the wee village of Cullen on Scotland's North East coast (thankfully a bit before the area was hit by some pretty severe winter weather!). We have never stopped here before and the place was quite surprising to be honest. After building up an appetite with a wander around town, we ended up in the Rockpool Café sampling the famous local soup. I think you'll see by the thumbnail and title that we quite liked it! We also really enjoyed the journey to get here (especially the bus bit) and there's definitely some unfinished business in this corner of Scotland. We will be back for sure.

Hi, I’m Steve, a travel reviewer from Scotland. Join me on my adventures as I discover my own country, often visiting places for the first time, so hopefully it's as much of an eye-opener for you as it is for me! Don't expect expert opinion, just a very honest journey of discovery. Sometimes featuring my intrepid sidekick Alicja, sometimes featuring adventures beyond the borders of Scotland. Enjoy!

I was only just told about this video today from a colleague of mine and I was your driver on your trip to Cullen. Glad you enjoyed your trip and would be more than happy to see you both again for more journeys in the future ☺️
As an Englishman l admire the Scots and their canny knack of making mouthwatering and hearty soups. I would say the soups in Scotland are world class. I visited Edinburgh Castle a year ago and the soups and bread there were absolutely beautiful. The second best place for soups is Poland, they can turn a turnip into a Al la carte cuisine of soups. Praise be to Scottish food. Plus you both showed us some stunning Scottish scenery. For that l bow my hat in respect to you.
Hey thanks so much Colin, and tend to agree - ALWAYS look for soup on the menu up here :) And Alicja makes a mean Polish soup :)

Ma maws soups the best for real
@@bigtoelittlefinger6133 They are braw that's for sure, but there nowhere near as good as her breakfast.

This is now my neck of the woods. A retired Brummie who now lives between Forres and Elgin, the 35 bus has been a regular day out for me for the last few years visiting all those wonderful little villages from Portgorden onward. Cullen is especially beautiful and yes, you need to return to take in the view from Castle Hill and visit the Kirk, so much history. The organs of the wife of Robert the Bruce were buried there after her death and Robert was so grateful he made an annual payment to the village in gratitude for the treatment of his wife's body and it's return south for burial. Apparently, this sum is still paid although the government challenged it in 2000 and the subsequent enquiry was settled in the village's favour! By the way, the bus driver on your return journey was Charlie, he's a bit of a local character, always ready for a chat and very supportive of his passages, he's also a staunch Liverpool fan but I don't hold that against him!
Superb comment Stephen, thanks so much! Awesome info in there and now need a trip back up - hopefully getting Charlie for the bus run!
Bostin ay it! 👍
Are you glad you escaped the 'diversity' of Birmingham?
You are very fortunate to have a partner who supports you in making these videos. I can imagine the reaction I would get from my wife if I suggested getting up before dark on a cold winter's morning to catch a train to make a video for UA-cam. I remember years ago during a Scottish holiday, we stopped for something to eat somewhere near Inverness. I had a bowl of soup called Cullin Skink made from smoked Haddock; it was wonderful. Take care of that lovely lady she is something special.
Also, it’s “Cullen Skink”.
@@janehobson2355 Ahh' thank you for that.
Another amazing adventure. I have never seen so many communities so "Neat and Clean", no trasj or rubbish any where. Shows the pride the people have. Oh another thing I have noticed is how polite everyone is. Hello's and good bye's and thank you. Wonderful.
It's the same in Canada. You must live in the USA?
Charming, unpretentious, authentic... thanks!
Thank you!
Brilliant video as always. As a resident of Buckie this one made me feel very proud of my local area. You should consider doing the “Six Harbour Walk”. A stunning coastal walk - Portsoy, Sandend, Cullen, Portknockie, Findochty, Buckie. Highly recommended.
Peter that is an excellent idea, and was hoping to come up with a theme to bring me back up - this might just be it! :) Thanks so much!
Came up to Buckie to work years ago and I bet apart from locals nobody could pronounce Findochty . I remember saying what !!! 🤣
@@DNW28 A few of the local towns / areas have unusual pronunciations.
Findochty = Finechty.
Sandend = Sannine.
Portessie = The Sloch.
Great idea They would enjoy that walk👍
I love the official ‘weather stone.’ Hats off to you both for the ten hour trip!
A lovely video, Steve. I used to drive for Stagecoach on the 35 and absolutely loved it. I couldn't believe they paid me for driving such a pretty route 😁
You guys are the best drivers anywhere!
Much Respect 🙏
That would be a dream job, driving buses on that route, seeing all of that gorgeous landscape and scenery everyday and getting paid to do it. On another note, the minus 1 celsius is just about normal for a high temperature here in the state of Massachusetts. It gets down to well below freezing at night. Great video as usual Steve.
@@scottie2636 it certainly is a great job but as an ex driver, driving a 14 ton double decker with passengers in the winter is a huge responsibility especially at £11 per hour which is one of the reasons I quit
Could feel the warmth from that soup! Another great video with the welcome bonus of Alicja! Merry Christmas to you both.
Cheers Andrew from us both! Thanks for coming along :)
Steve you have a sidekick! I have a traveling sidekick too....she and I have been together for almost 26 years and it makes our trips 9and life) so much more fun!
Last week I found out my great great grandfather was Scottish that’s where I get the love for Scotland from. Great video Steve. Scotland beautiful
Thank you both for a really fabulous trip once again. Every video I have watched that you have made has been well made, entertaining and very informative, yes indeed.
My step granda was a fisherman and used to stink out the house every weekend by making his own Cullen Skink soup. Could never stomach the stuff after enduring the stench of it being made. Top man he was. Rest easy
I love these nook and crany places
Thanks for yet another shared trip! I have a nerve issue in my legs and I'd never be able to do as much walking as you do, so i appreciate coming along on your journeys. I do have to say that 0°C doesn't seem all that cold to me, but I've lived a good part of my life in the northern tier of the US (in Omaha, if it got UP to freezing in the winter we'd be out in shorts and t-shirts to shovel our driveways!).
😂👍
What a wonderful trip. I didn't realize that I'd been smiling the whole time until we got to the end and I quit smiling. My face felt funny then. I am a huge fan of soups. I love soup in the summer in the spring and the winter in the fall. It doesn't matter to me. My favorite type of journey. Feed on the ground most of the time! I want to convey my gratitude to the two of you Steve and Alicja for doing these videos for us. Some of them, like this one, I feel we're made especially for me though I know it wasn't. I want to wish you the merriest of Christmases. Be well, stay safe, travel far, love from Texas.
Aww Kate thank you so much!!! We're both really glad you enjoyed this one, and we're also both very much with you on soup! :)
Oh oh, ya got me thinking, it's clootie dumpling, stovies, tatties and neaps time of year! Thanks man!!!! Nice to see Alicja again, hope you all have a great Christmas!
Cheers George! Hey, one of those will be making a short appearance in next weeks video too :)
I have memories of making this in home economics (back when schools taught basic household skills) in Aberdeen in the eighties... I remember the haddock all falling apart.
I never made it to advanced home economics :D
It's a lovely part of Scotland and slightly off the beaten track.
So true Colin, often passed by, but well deserving of more adventures

Hi Steve paul from Kent another great video merry Xmas to
You both.
And to you mate! Look out for another wee video on Christmas Eve :)
Hi Steve and Alicja. Thoroughly enjoying the channel. Apologies if someone's already mentioned this, but I wasn't sitting through 800+ comments to find out. If you both go back in tourist season, there's a life-size (approx) figure of a man in a suit and hat, who sits in a chair outside Cullen Collectibles (the wee blue shop across from where you had your skink). I arrived in Cullen from the south side and the view of the wee stacks on the beach took my breath away. Very unexpected. Keep up the good work guys.
I have had many holidays on The Morrey Firth coast and I believe that it is about the most lovely coast in the UK, all the way from Fraserburgh to Inverness, wonderful towns and villages, and some of the most lovely and uncrowded beaches and really nice people! Thanks for showing us some great places!
Couldn't agree more Neil!
'Moray'.
Keep up the good work
Thanks Sandy!
Thanks. Another great video. Lovely scenery.
Catching up with your back catalogue as it were. Wonderful video and the concept is right up my street - all day trip to sample a delicacy. The stuff in the tins doesn't even come close!
So good to see this as it’s one of the places I’m hoping to get to when I got to Inverness in May. It’s so helpful to see you travelling there by public transport as that’s the way I’ll be going.
I love this. It was worth it to me also. Your films go along perfectly speed. Gosh that soup looked good so good I think I was drooling. I 'm looking for a recipe. Hugs to you, Merry Ann from Minnesota
Thanks Merry Ann! I still think about that soup.... :D
About 12 years ago I travelled for 13 hours just to taste this soup in Inverness! Well worth the trip it was delicious!!
Another smashing wee trip Steve, don’t remember much about that part of Scotland 🏴 I do remember visiting a ‘BAXTER’ factory & shop that was rather splendid, I briefly noticed as the bus passed! the nearly empty train & bus is a sign of the times, or was it that people knew better than to go out on such a freezing 🥶 cold morning! I’m Surprised living in Scotland Alicja didn’t wear a quilted onesie on the top of her clothes! at least the hearty Soup 🍜 looked worth the trip I was practically dribbling at the sight of it! the views from the beach were astonishing, Scotland is full of endless surprises round every corner, a fabulous place to live! Thanks 🙏 so much for entertaining us again, Happy Holiday to you and Alicja, Slainte x🥃
that soup looked just great, cream of smoked haddock soup mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
Tasted as good as it looked!
Thank you for sharing your journey.
Lovely trip and I also like the background music on your videos.
Thanks so much! You wouldn't believe how long it takes me to find a suitable track in amongst all the normal UA-cam soundtracks, so especially appreciate your comment! :)
While I was born in Montrose and lived in Brechin, my Grandparents lived in Buckie so we would always visit them in the holidays. Love Cullen Skink as well as visiting all the little fishing villages. Findochty is actually pronounced "Finechty" by the locals! Bowfiddle rock is amazing to see in Portknockie. We would travel to Buckie from Montrose over the Cairn o' Mount road (you'll need to do that in the van some time!) I'm in Australia now and these videos are great reminders! Keep on posting these great videos, Steve and Alicja!
Another great video Steve. I have holidayed in that area many times and I have eaten Cullen Skink in that Café and recommend it as a must, it is beautiful and definitely the best I have eaten.
I love Cullen skink! Another fab day out thank you so much, really enjoyable.
Was there 2 weeks ago 1st time. Lovely place. Great area Portsoy fantastic too saw Peaky Blinders set and stayed in Durn House Portsoy where Blinders stayed fantastic hotel and food . Make great vid 😀

A fantastic watch as always. Cullen is a beautiful wee place, we’re truly spoiled living where we do. You really got the weather and what a difference that makes too.

I am from Staffordshire and I absolutely love Cullen Skink, i first tried it from a tin, Baxters but have since had it made fresh and it is delicious, just the right thing for a long walk on a very cold day, warms the very cockles of your soul, great vid... had my mouth watering watching you scoff that yumminess
Cullen, lovely place 70s & 80s used to go on holiday there in summer and play in the local golf competitions loved it and the golf club did great Cullen Skink. revisited in 2017 not changed a bit .

Roughly 6 months of winter here. But i love it here. And i love Scotland. Love the accent. Thank you
Great, now I'm hungry despite having had a big lunch. 🙄😉 What a perfect day to be in that place, hardly any visitors will see it in that light as not many will come to visit around that season. Absolutely stunning! 🤩
Cheers, aye, we caught some nice sunlight, pity it didn't hang around for long :D
Thanks Steve what a beautiful place undiscovered by me at least ,,,, Me staying in Aberdeen with old timer bus card 😀 I should get out there jump on the bus what a beautiful run from.elgin I currently watching clips again local hero a fantastic film.partly filmed Pennan just up road cold I know just now but didn't your trip too Cullen look beautiful thank you and nowt like a bowl of soup In winter great video thank you fantastic loved it Steve I think you both remember day out for ages fantastic
Amazing.I love a good bowl of Skink❤❤
Was well worth the journey Alan :)
Another fantastic film. Love the 2 of you. We also had Cullen skink in Cullen, best ever soup. Haven't tried making it yet but do make my own bread. Love train journeys so might just do this one.
🤣, when we first moved to Australia I drove 2 hours each way for an Indian meal at a decent restaurant ( my only local options were ‘curry in a hurry’ and the ‘handy Ghandi’ - subsequently sued by the Ghandi family over the name use…….where the curry options were ‘ meat curry, vegetable curry, fish curry 😵💫😞🤨) for my wife’s birthday. In northern NSW, it’s Woolgoolga, for a decent curry - lots of Sikhs living there 😊👍. Some lovely frosty scenery in this one, well done you pair 😎🎥👍‼️
Brilliant Billy! :) I guess over there, 2 hours drive is nothing :D
@@steve-marsh foodies be travelling for good food. That Cullen skink must’ve been magic on a cold day 😍😛😋👍.
what a great rosta, drive Elgin to Aberdeen break 45 mins by law, then return Aberdeen to Elgin and finish. or vice versa. Cullen looks a typical fishing village, still with many old fisherman's cottages in tow, lovely display of heritage. a 4 hour bus ride wow that is a massive route though. can only manage 2 hrs locally, but great to see stagecoach have reached out to that distance, they have to be the UK's biggest travel operator now. ahhh the memories of soup roll and butter as a kid from the end of pier café, its all gone now a ruddy eyesore zipline ride replaced it eventually after many years of closure and decay, surprised they kept the dilapidated old end of pier theatre running its just as old.
Cheers mate, can be a rough old road that one, but great to get to the coast. Might have to try the full Stagecoach journey sometime!
I recently discovered I have Cullen boatbuilders in my ancestry. Maybe that's why I'm so drawn to the soup - although the cake drew my attention too. That was a treat of a video, many thanks and Happy Christmas to you both.
No way! How cool is that!? And happy Christmas to you too!
Really cool video Steve! I enjoyed watching this adventure! 😃
We are from Germany and have been to Cullen last year in June. Cullen is really nice, and "Cullen Skink" is delicous! Thanks for sharing the video!
Fabulous review the two of you. Gorgeous weather. I love cold, crisp, sunny winter days. Keep moving and you keep warm. Keep them coming guys

American here. I enjoy your videos, particularly since I have never been to Scotland. Some of my ancestors came from there, though. They were called McDuffie or some version of that, and I understand that they originally came from the island of Colonsay. A well-known American writer did return to these roots to write, The Crofter and the Laird, byJohn McPhee ...
Beautiful scenery, thanks.
Wonderful.to see such old towns and the rugged coastline im not much of a fish lover but id eat that soup it look e delicious 😊

What an awesome video Steve. We've never been along that coastline but added it to my wishlist after your wonderful NE250 video. It looks a stunning part of the world and Cullen? Simply wow! What a gorgeous looking village. Thanks for the heads up 👍
Tell you what mate, so much more to see up there, can't wait to get back! Have a great weekend!
Cullen Skink recipe from Banff just along the coast from Cullen, You need 1 onion - sliced and chopped, crushed peppercorns (3 or 4), butter, water, 1 medium Finnan haddie ( salted smoked haddock), 500g / 1ld potatoes, 600ml / 1 pint milk, salt & pepper. Fry the onions with some butter and crushed peppercorns. Add fish , cover with water and cook until skin becomes loose enough to remove. Lift the fish from the broth. Remove the skin and break the fish up into chunks. Remove any fish bones that you find. Set the fish aside and return the skin and bones to to the broth and simmer for an hour to make the base stock. Meanwhile boil and mash the potatoes - keeping a few aside to loosely chunk up. Strain the fish stock and add to a large pan. Add the milk and simmer. Add as much mashed potato as you like to get the soup to a thickness you prefer. Add back in the flaked / chunked fish and chunked potato. Season with salt and pepper and a knob of butter. Serves three to four depending on how generous your serving.
Hey thanks so much for this! :)
Lovely video Steve!
What a fantastic video. Such a beautiful part of the country. Spent many happy holidays camping in Portknockie and played golf on Cullins course which is partly on the beach and partly on the cliffs. As you said the villages haven't changed since we were there in the 60s and 70s.
Only one thing you can keep the soup lol

That soup looked the business, nice find Café too, looked a perfect day without any tourists, temps have been crazy lately, was showing -9 here in Ayrshire last week, I was 2 long buses up to visit my old mum last Thursday and 2 long buses home cos of the rail strikes, I was only home about an hour and started hearing water, yip burst pipe behind the ceiling in my downstairs toilet, a little bit of luck that I was in and was able too turn off the water and electrics as it was pouring through the light fitting, heard some area gossip a few nearby had the same issue but sadly the damage was more severe, been in this house since 2001 - burst pipe is a first.
Massive Thanks again and hope you and the Mrs have a nice Xmas, not really my time of the year IBH.
Cheers!
Absolutely beautiful video again!!! Steve, you are my hero for showing me all of these little towns and villages in my homeland. I miss Scotland soooo much.
So glad you enjoyed it David!
Concur! The only fly in the ointment for me was the pet cemetery @ 18:10 as it made me miss so many of my guys. I even made my wife promise that she would place the ashes of my Lil Bit [one of our cats] in my casket so neither of us would be lonesome.
That soup looked delicious!! Every time we go shopping, we look for the Baxter's one to be on offer but it never is. Good to hear that Aldi do one
Oh good shout, I'll be looking out for the Baxters one too now!
@@steve-marsh It's pricey for a tin (well, it is in South Wales where there probably isn't the demand for it). I found it maybe a tad salty.....still good though. I've been inspired to try making my own now instead. Just need some chunky bread to accompany it. Yum!!
@@steve-marsh Aldi's award-winning Cullen Skink is made by Downies Of Whitehills, fwiw.
Good time of year to try as many as possible to compare! : )
I wouldn't lose any sleep over missing out on the Baxter's tinned version, it's decent enough as tinned soup goes but for the high price the few times I tried it I found it lacking a bit in the 'solids' content. Haven't seen it on offer for years now, wouldn't dream of buying it otherwise.
very picturesque - a slow journey through those parts would be heavenly
On our first trip to Scotland a few years ago, Cullen Skink was on the menu at the first restaurant we visited. I had no idea what it was, but the word 'Skink" didn't sound appetizing (like a combination of skunk/stink!) But I kept seeing it on menus so just had to order this local dish - it was amazing! We didn't visit Cullen for it (I think we were in the Oban/Connel area) - will have to add that stop to our next trip to Scotland. Great video, as always. Happy Holidays to you both!
Haha I have always thought that about the name too! :)
Skink brings other images to my mind. Apart from the gecko-like lizard, the main image is that of my son's Warhammer Lizardmen army with regiments of Skinks!
Such beauty, great viaducts, sweet little houses, narrow streets, beautiful sea shore and you two. Who could ask for anything more. Thank you
We had a great time in Cullen, as part of our two-week northeast Scotland trip this past May. We enjoyed walking in the old and "new" parts of town, including coastal trails, streets, and hillside restaurants. Keep making your fun and interesting videos. You should visit South Padre Island some cool week in winter--lots of birds, a great beach, plenty of restaurants, and even a tram to get around the fairly compact (for Texas) town.
Loved the music, I can smell the soup
