Thanks for the in depth review! I hadn’t heard the title was different in Japan, makes a lot of sense, I was actually quite disappointed at how small a part the Heron plays in the overall story
Great analysis, in some aspects Miyazaki is Mahito, the Heron is Toshio Suzuki and the Great Uncle, Miyazaki’s mentor Osaka Yasuo (who passed away during production of the film). Another possible interpretation on the film is Miyazaki with Suzuki as his reluctant guide taking on the animation industry and Miyazaki beating out the upstart producers to carry on Otsuka’s legacy.
The heron could also be Isao Takahata, Miyazaki’s Ghibli co-founder (Grave of the Firelies) who also passed in 2018 which could explain the Heron’s intermittent absence. I left the movie feeling like there’s so much to chew on. I instantly loved it.
1:25 oftentimes siblings of the deceased were married, simply to keep any business ties and money inside the connected families. Sad they did things for fear and money, rather than out of love. Sad that any of us have to do so so often that it becomes normal, a tradition... Okay, only a minute and a half in, and I can tell you GOT the movie, unlike a few other creators.
Best review I found so far! Thank you! This movie made me think for a while about the many cryptical messages in it & it shure is intended that way by Miyazaki. Maybe it is ment to be something like a Koan, what do you think? However, I could not get so close to the main character as for example Kiki. He stays quite uncomprehensive to me to the end. This is very often the case in Stories where the main character is only there to lead you through a phantastic environment that is the story, but a character you clearly sympathise with helps a lot to lead you through an environment that is mostly confusing, like Chihiro in Spirited away. Also Chihiro obviously learns something in this magic world, what is a bit vage in Mohito´s case. At least to me. Nevertheless I loved the movie & will probably see it again.
That's a really interesting take on it. The sudden insights expected through a koan may be what the viewer experiences, placing them at the center of the experience instead of the main character? Mind blown...hoping to see it again as well.
I think that the confusion I felt after leaving the cinema was a good thing in the end; I felt as if I didn’t have the whole picture and I was right. I think that because of the english title I went into the theater with the wrong idea in my mind, idk why they changed it from the japanese one, a massive mistake.
Yeah probably, when I went to middle school I was so happy when I broke my arm because that meant I didn’t have to see all those people that hated me for no reason.
Finally, someone who actually understood the film. This analysis is incredible! Thanks for sharing your insight about the movie 🔥
Thank you. Much appreciated.
This is one of the best reviews/analysis I have seen about this movie! Thank you for that

Thank you for that perspective. The Ghibli history is fascinating in itself and I'm just starting to grasp it.

He never said this would be his last film or that he'd retire after it. Closed the video at 0:13.

I'd love to catch it again before it leaves the theaters. The awards it's won may keep it around a bit longer, I hope.
This was one of the few films I actually enjoyed in Cinema
High praise indeed. It's a wonderful film.
Could it be that he bashed his head so he doesn't have to go to school?
I know some kids who would agree with that, yes!
