Tip - if you're doing patchwork and you have slightly different weight fabrics that you'd like to use, it's possible to interface the lighter one to make them more similar

Oh wow, this is such a clever tip. I am pinning this comment so that other people can see!
I had never thought about using interfacing for the lighter fabrics, but that is genius. Thanks for the tip!

Using your scraps is such a great idea for a way to do Sew Frugal this year. I love how you broke down the different categories/approaches to piecing together your scraps.

Your video came out at just the right time. I have a huge stash of fabrics, at least 2,000 yards. Some are over 40 years old and a couple tubs go back to when my granddaughter was in grade school. She is now a sophomore in college. Every time I sew down my stash, someone gives me a significant amount of fabric--the last was about 250 yards at least.
Most of my sewing is for charity. I make simple garments such as shorts, pants, fleece jackets, knit and woven tops and dresses for our county schools and 2-yard dresses that our church group sends to Africa (not pillowcase dresses but just front and back with cut-on sleeves and elastic in the middle front and back). Our schools furnish free breakfasts and lunches for all students and send home food on the weekends. About 1,000 children in our county are homeless. Most jobs are in the service industries and in the $10-15 per hour range with a huge senior population.
I belong to a state-wide sewing group and our chapter makes clothing as our community service project. I try to use as much fabric as I can when cutting out this clothing and anything leftover goes to a group that uses it for dog beds at the animal shelter.
I hadn't thought about color blocking for the garments I make but am going to start focusing on it. Many times it's hard to make a matching outfit even with a huge stash but I am seelin possibilities so more items will go together. Mosr skirts and shorts take around 1/2 to 3/4 yards but could take advantage of color blocking to make them less boring.

My goodness, that is a whole lot of fabric! It sounds like you are able to do some amazing things with your hobby. You will have changed so many lives. Incredible!

Thanks for all the great inspiration! I'm eager to use up a lot of older clothes by cutting them up.
One really big benefit about piecing different fabrics is the ability to accentuate and decentuate parts of your body. If you want to decentuate broad shoulders, then use darker and/or smaller prints there. If you have narrow hips, you can add lighter and/or bolder prints there.

I am lost in admiration of how neatly your scraps are stored! I have a ton of scraps just jumbled together in a zipped under-bed storage bag... 🤪
I like to keep scraps in case I need to go back into an existing garment and create a new facing or ruffle or something. As I've developed my sewing skills I have looked critically at some garments that don't quite work and altered them to fit better, so I've been really glad I've kept those scraps!
However, I have a vague notion that "one day" I shall make a patchwork item of some kind. I have seen in a "living museum" a bed cover made out of literally hundreds of strips of different fabrics, and it looked absolutely amazing! Necessity can sometimes be the mother of beauty as well as invention 😍 Even just a cushion cover or a tote bag would be a good candidate for similar treatment.
I remember seeing a woman wearing a patterned skirt with a 4" band around the bottom in a complementary solid colour, and thought that would be a great way to lengthen a garment was too short, or as a way to put fabrics together where there isn't enough of either to make a full garment... You've really got my creative juices flowing this morning, Theresa, thank you! I can't wait to see what you create in the end! 😊

    • @LostMyThread
      @LostMyThread  6 місяців тому +1

My scraps did not use to be this tidy! It has taken work to get here, but that hasn't necessarily meant that I use them up. This is just the kind of challenge that I need.
I do also want to make up some wall hangings, cushion covers, etc. Those won't be for this challenge, as it needs to be garments, but I'm going to need to tackle this scrap problem from different angles.
I hope you can find some fun surprises in your own scrap bag!

Sometimes it's hard to spot the fabrics that go together, unless you spend some time with them. I've looked through my scraps and felt like most of them seem totally mismatched. When I pulled one piece of fabric out at a time, it was easier to see the possibilities.
You may be onto something with the patchwork peppermint pocket skirt. Haha. One for me to think on.

🤩🤯I’m very impressed with your research and organization of items. You’ve definitely refined your color palette so almost all of your scraps coordinate, now you have so many choices! I love all your choices for projects- the aubergine w/the Liberty cotton lawn was such a great combo! I'm wondering if on the fabric that you suggested for the tiered skirt you could include godets of the solids w/the multicolored fabrics to incorporate the fabrics into a secondary design? Just a thought, my brain always heads for the most complicated ideas....

I'd love to bust some scraps, but I am really not a fan of the patchwork aesthetic 😔 thanks for the awesome pattern overview though, I often upcycle old clothes and what works quite well for me is to take a piece of clothing and turn it into something smaller, e.g. a dress into a skirt, a men's hoodie into shorts etc and its always great to use free patterns

I don't think Peppermimt magazine patterns are free anymore. You have to pay something for them. Just in case a new sewer goes there, I haven't been able to find any of the patterns you mentioned for free. Shame cause some are really nice and I will buy but won't use for Sewfrugal.

If you have a big enough piece left from a dress, skirt or blouse, you could make a small matching purse! I made this one (ua-cam.com/video/pxfBorbtrmM/v-deo.html) before, but there are so many free ones!
