    Mood directions are pretty difficult for beginners, so if you're going to use them, see if you can find a sew-along for either the pattern or the specific technique/piece you're trying to sew. Tiana's Closet is a FABULOUS resource of advice and free sewing patterns from a professional pattern drafter. She's relatively size-inclusive too (though not as inclusive as Mood).

      I agree.. They tend to be sparse. . And the same goes for many of these free patterns. There's nothing more discouraging than directions with no details.

      As a follow up to the comment about mixing and matching sleeves, it's really important to keep the original sleeve cap from the original pattern to get a good shoulder fit. You could expand this for a puff sleeve, etc., but I would recommend keeping that sleeve cap from the original and merging it with any new sleeve type to make for the best fit.

    Love the encouragement to try out more complicated patterns even as a beginner, this is how I was able to actually find the motivation to keep learning! It was so much more rewarding to figure out all of the details of a pattern that I would actually love and wear vs making something “simple” that I didn’t love as much

    I would sew a muslin for any new pattern that is completely different from anything I have ever made before or the outfit is for an event that is important for me or whoever I am making it for. There is one other instance where I would make a muslin and that is if the pattern is from a company that is new to me. It is far less expensive to make a muslin along where you make all the adjustments required than to do those changes to your good fabric.

    • @MaddieLynn
      @MaddieLynn  8 місяців тому +4

      I’m always lazy and skip the muslin part but need to be better about it! I wholeheartedly agree though that with new unfamiliar patterns a mock-up is a good starting point

    • @deedeedussard
      @deedeedussard 7 місяців тому +6

      I do the same. I use old sheets for mock ups as I have lots of fabric for adjustments and lots of mock ups (sometimes it just takes 3 lol) I would recommended new sewists use sheets then they don't have to panic about running out of fabric when making mock ups.

    I made the Wide Leg Pants by Peppermint Magazine in a few days as my first ever sewing project once I learned how to use the machine, I found the instructions very clear and thorough to make very nice finishing touches and I made another pair for my sister later. I still use the pattern and instructions for the pockets for most other pants I made since because I love them so much! 10/10 recommend 🥰

    Peppermint is an Australian sustainability, recycle, makers & indie magazine, similar to one called Frankie (you might find some patterns on there also).
    A brilliant list, returning to sewing after a long sabbatical so I am all about floaty cotton print dresses RN but I also have a decent collection of Vintage Vogue 50's style. Last week a store had a '4 patterns for $20AUD sale' so 12 patterns fell into my basket, probably two way past my capability yet but you gotta strike when the iron is hot -- I saved $170 on buying the second batch of 8 & made sure there were a couple of exy vogue patterns in there, alongside the basics that will get my wardrobe looking happier.
    Thank you for such a brilliant list!

    I've used patterns from Mood and The-Thread. From The-Thread I've printed two dresses patterns and one pants pattern that I've used and modified to change the style and make a couple of dresses and pants. Actually, during my Christmas break I made 2 pairs of pants with the pattern from The-Thread. They also have very clear and detailed instructions and a glossary of sewing techniques that have helped me tons when doing other projects.

    Sure... anyone could sew if they don't mind wasting fabric... but it's a lot easier to start with easier projects, and cheaper. It's also much better to start with an instructor.

    • @MaddieLynn
      @MaddieLynn  7 місяців тому +2

      Everyone has their own way of sewing! Some like to dive right in and learn as they sew and for some smaller projects are a great place to start…I also highly recommend using thrifted sheets as fabric because it’s so much more budget friendly for sewing💕

      When I learned in high school, I didn’t know you were supposed to use a difficulty level that matched your skills. I just picked whatever I liked, and sewed. Before going to college I bought a bunch of 100% wool plaid in two patterns and colors. I made a lined blazer, skirt with 26 pattern pieces for all the boxed pleats, lined slacks, lined jumper, a couple hats, and a lined cape. I also made a puffer style coat. I did this while my mom was in the hospital and couldn’t help at all. If I’d only chosen patterns that matched my level I would have ended up with a couple hats.

      Trust me, I’m the last person who would ever change names to be “woke”. I’m sorry you don’t like the work “sewist” the only reason I like using it is because it’s a fun word! Thanks for watching

    • @gailfelker5005
      @gailfelker5005 7 місяців тому +3

      "Sewist" is contemporary. It's totally acceptable now and has been for about ten years. I like it! "seamstress" implies that I can be hired to sew for you... And that's not me. I sew for the pure enjoyment of it .

    • @mandycarroll3516
      @mandycarroll3516 7 місяців тому +2

      Seamstress does not imply only that I would sew for another. It is the female version of a woman sewing. As seamster implies a man sewing. Sewist removes all gender as so many stupid things do now. Adding new terms to it doesn't make it real. There is nothing wrong with the terms, definitions from my childhood.
      Not once when I have said I'm a seamstress has anyone said..oh you see for people. Nope..they usually asked where did I learn..which I reply..home ec. Which I probably now have to make that a gender free title..God knows how.

      I persevered because I was interested to see the patterns, but please can you tone down and slow down. Not meant as a rude jibe, bet a helpful crit. So sorry to hurt your feelings but I'm sure your program will be good, once I get to see it and more enjoyable for others too.😢
