Hi Teresa, I have a papercut pattern where the instructions are formed into a booklet by being stuck together concertina style. It’s a bit irritating tbh as It all unravels when you drop it, hope this helps.

I love the Pietras! I had to adjust the rise but I practically live in the three I've sewn up and am getting ready to sew up the other two views for colder weather - this is the first pattern where I fully plan on using all the views! Definitelly worth the purchase!

I recently made the seamwork shorts & I was exactly the same as you about the circles and especially with the fly construction. I also had a slight bump/ nudge and didn't like zip coverage. I thought I'm not going to use their method next time I make them as I have done many flies so will use technique I prefer. Interestingly I was watching Tilly and the buttons fly instructions video & looked similar 🤯 after the fly I decided to do waistband the way I prefer & I also had done same thing of putting interfacing on & cutting with pattern facing up. I sewed the inside waistband first then topstitching back down putting in elastic at seams and stitching in ditch then leaving safely pins on elastic continued topstitching waistband leaving a 2 inch gap where it needs to be attached & continue with front and round doing same for other side. This enabled me to check & adjust elastic length which was a good job.i did. The hardest thing I did was making pattern adjustments to pattern pieces before I started. As I have a full belly but a very short rise at the front. I also fall between 16 & 18 and the hip & thigh ease difference is very significant. It's also 2 different blocks so you can't grade between these sizes. I do like my test pair but still need to do a little tweaking. Thanks so much for your honest informative reviews as I was wondering about how these patterns differed. 🤩

Great job Theresa! I’m rooting for the Pietra’s - a bit biased perhaps as I haven’t tried the other two patterns, but I find the Pietra’s a really lovely comfortable fit on my body and they look so stylish.

I really like what you did with the neckline facing on the March Dress. Personally I was a bit disappointed when I looked into that pattern and discovered the design lines weren’t princess seams as I had thought: I love the shape and was hoping to put invisible zips into the princess seams for nursing my bubby. Naturally that’s my own personal use case. It makes way more sense to me, as it is simply an oversized neck facing, to put it to the inside and use top-stitching to create the design lines, as you have done.

Thank you for your unbiased and thoughtful pattern reviews. I vote for leaving the faux fly out of the Palisades shorts. It interrupts the vertical lines, so perhaps it will have a more slimming, streamlined, clean look without the faux fly.

It's so validating to hear that you also struggled with the seamwork fly construction!! I tried making the seamwork Weston (?) shorts as my first pair of proper bottoms and the fly was a disaster! They looked terrible and I wrote off fly closures entirely lol

I've only toiled the Palisades but I didn't think the faux fly was loose on the front, I thought it was stitched down, huh I'll have to go back and see. It seems odd that the interfacing would be visible from the inside. Love this comparison! Thank you!

Huh. I just checked my Palisade shorts and the fly interfacing doesn’t show. But I made them so long ago I can’t say-I might have corrected that on my own. I actually don’t mind a serged and stitched hem as it’s less bulky. But to each their own!

I agree about the seamwork zipper being close to the edge, it does seem odd. I also really struggle with sizing with seamwork patterns, it’s always way too large despite studying the finished garment and ease.

Hi Theresa, love the smack down. I love learning from someone else WTH,😊. I was going to tell you if you love nice finish, i learned a trick from Whitney, over on Tomkat. Go to the second hand store and find a man's silk tie, wash and dry it first, and take it apart, and use the bias cut silk to make bias tape. Mens ties are cut on the bias,, I use it on denim short hem and take the abuse. I just used it on a top, which hada bias tape neckline.

I bought the Pietra a couple of years ago but haven’t gotten around to making them. I love your review of the instructions and sewing details (for all of them). I agree about hems, I like them deep and have been known to add facings to pants and shorts when the hems weren’t deep or when I needed more inseam length.

Good eye!! The online photos/diagrams show that the Palisades fly is opposite to the Dorians. Technically, in RTW, women's trousers have the fly right over left, but women's jeans are left over right. Go figure!! I sew all my pants with left over right because it's weird undoing the zipper with my left hand. 😂

I love your battle comparison videos 😁 I went into this one a little biased, and am kinda rooting for one of them. CC patterns are high up on my list, and I've generally not had a good experience with Seamwork for construction or fit. I really like the color you've made up the Pietras in, too 🥰🥰 Thank you for such a thoughtful series! I have started using my laptop for digital pattern instructions since I discovered that many contain the links, etc. [And pattern instructions keep getting longer and longer 😆] I like making notes, too, and in most cases my tool bar has active draw/text/highlight buttons on it that allow for taking notes and highlighting (or even just keeping my place) on the pattern. 😁 I agree about your Seamwork editing problem and in this case, I think that second "press..." instruction was probably supposed to be attached to the bit above it for the non-serger users. Looking forward to the final results video!

Feels like nerding out with a friend 😜 I def agree that the Pietras have really lovely inside details but I like that you were able to pick a pocket lining fabric with the Dorian. I'm kind of shocked that for the Palisades, the interfacing is just out there exposed to your skin! That just seems thoughtless and lazy!

Hi Theresa, thank you so much for this very informative series. So far my favorite is the Pietra pants because of its clean finish and lovely pockets, however I might want to put a side zipper in the Pietra. I tend to fluctuate between sizes so I would be concerned about stretching the waistband. I’m currently in the middle of experimenting with a few shorts patterns as well, but using the Big Four. Since I live in Chicago and so close to a JoAnn Fabrics, I tend to take advantage of their frequent $2.99 sales, but I have to admit, I can’t find a Big Four pattern similar to the Pieta. Your series is convincing me to buy the Pietra pattern, but I will reserve my final decision after you’ve completed your series. Finally, I just want to say you’re doing a great job! Thank you for sharing.

As a fellow sewist that usually uses the big four patterns (and still does!) I wanted to share that a Closet Core pattern was my first toe dip into Indie patterns. I bought the Cielo top. I was very pleasantly surprised by the instructions and final garment and I wear it all the time. That said, I think with ANY pattern it all depends on the person and fabric….I like to try lots of different options and sometimes the inexpensive patterns are the way for me to accomplish that!

  • @chlomo2618
    @chlomo2618 4 дні тому

For me, the proof of the garment is in the wearing, so I'm going to reserve judgement until you're modelling them and we hear your final thoughts, but so far, they all look great! I'm with you on the interfacing visible on the inside of a garment. I don't even like it when you can see a small sliver of interfacing around the fly, so I really wouldn't enjoy the Palisades for that element. I'm not a huge fan of faux flies anyway. Unless it really seems as though the front of the trousers needs some sort of detail, I just skip them.

Those are all great makes, and you are doing such a good job with your analysis. I'm finding it interesting -- I own both the Pietra and Palisades patterns. I've gotten as far as a toile on the Pietras, but something about the crotch curve and rise was definitely off (on my figure) and I had a lot of material bunching up and pulling in front of my lower abdomen and down into the crotch. Will be very interesting to hear any of your comments on fitting notes.

Regarding the instruction about pressing to the wearers left, I would have read it as an additional mention, in case the people who aren’t using an overlocker skipped that part in the instruction and therefore missed the pressing instruction.

The Pietra pants/shorts will likely be the first proper pants I ever sew, because that's one of the patterns included in their beginner sewing course. It's pretty cool, I think, that they use a pattern that has some interesting detail. Yours look quite nice, but all of your shorts do, and I'm looking forward to seeing the next installment of this series. These pattern clashes are really interesting and informative, and I really like the way you break things down and discuss them.
