Segrest Farms Breeding Facility and University of Florida Aquaculture Lab-Traveling the fish scene-
Вставка

- I have had the great pleasure of staying in Tampa Florida with my very dear friend Sandy Moore, the President of Segrest Farms. I got to present to their sales staff, as well as to the Tampa Bay Aquarium Society. While here, I had the unique opportunity to visit the facility where most of the Neon Tetras and Cardinal Tetras are captive bred for the American hobby. I also got to visit one of my favorite places, the University of Florida's Aquaculture Lab and see some breeding projects that got my inner geek smiling- Rainbow Shiners and Polypterus Senegalus.

Rachel .Loved the tour worked at Segrest in the 1990s they have come so far and led the industry to what it is today and a leader in farm raising once wild captured species of fish Bravo Sandy Moore you have carried Elwin's dream farther than he ever imagined
+Angela Kirk I got to meet Elwin this last trip, a very impressive man. I will make sure Sandy sees this :)
Only 6 people? Wow.
Dory!!
This was awesome to show people. Those fish farms looks crazy. But I'm happy they take care of the fish.
Rachel.....TREMENDOUS, video! VERY well done. You are a fish Goddess, baby.
+Aquamojo Thanks Mo!
Wow. That was a cool trip. Thanks for showing us. Those African cichlids at the end look great.

Hay. You are a boss. Thanks for al the content
I'm so glad that they're trying to spawn blue huppo tangs my biggest issue with salt water aquariums is over fishing so it refreshing to see this.
Awesome Video.
Awesome Video, I loved to see some of there other facilities.I recently got accepted to the university of tampa and I had no idea segrest farms was in or close to tampa!
Cool video! I am a big fan! (BTW I saw you at the aquatic experience :P)
Can't wait to see the plant farm
we actually ran put of time so I will have to do that next visit
This was so cool! I'm the aquatics specialist at a PetCo, and it was really cool to get a glimpse of where we get some of our fish!
I don't suppose you could get a tour of Coast Tropicals? 😉
that's who I get most of my fish from, here on the west coast.
I dont' spend much time on the west coast, as I am in PA.
that's really cool to see the tiny polypterus
Класное видео про ферму!
Но запомнилось совершенно другое.
Тату есть на морскую тематику ? Парусник ? Якорь? Или роза ветров? Кольцо вообще класс!
Cool video about the farm!
But I remember something completely different.
Tattoo is on the sea theme? A sailboat? Anchor? Or the wind rose? The ring is generally class!
I'll share the video with my friends.
Welcome to Florida! Keep up the vids
Awesome video, thanks for sharing!
Awesome! This was a very good video!
Excellent. Thanks for sharing.
So cool! Great video!
that is so cool and I am so jealous a school so close to me teaches that. I'd be in heaven!
Hi Rachel! Great video! May I request a video? I'm looking for nice colorful fish small fish like small cyclids. I found one pretty interesting, the Mikrogeophagus altispinosus, but I'm not sure if they are easy or difficult to keep. I have read some things, but I'm not sure, so I would like an expert comment from you if possible :).
In my opinion, there are two kind of behaviors in fishes: hiccup and curiosity. Families like tetras are nervous and they all seem to hiccup when they breathe :). They breathe and swim exactly at the same time, and they use to be shy. And the other kind, the relaxed and curious fishes, are bettas, cyclids, gouramies... Fishes that seem to be more intelligent, curious, and they can hover and swim independently from breathing. Those are my favorite ones! :). But I've had bad luck with bettas (all die because of intestinal obstruction, because I use and want to keep using flakes to feed my fishes). Any ideas about what can I do?
The main facility is amazing, I had the pleasure of touring before.
Wow love it nice video
I loved seing the lionfish, they are so awesome!
This was awesome.
Thanks for sharing. Love you gorgeous one.
Seriously , is she a gorgeous one ?
What a joke 😆
Great video thanks for sharing.
awesome video
Hi Rachel great video, like you to use old styros great idea. If I am going to transport fish one of these with battery powered air pump best for fish. Less stress also. I just subscribed. CichlidChip from UK.
That is a crazy amount of fish.
hey can do please do a video on breeding neon tetras?
go to Mark's Aquatics
Nice video,,👍
Great Video Rachel ;)
only 6 people run that? i can hardly run my 6 50 gallon tanks
+ilikewasabe The key is automation.
How did I miss that you were in my town >.>
I could drive there, love to see any and related. Thanks! Any information greatly appreciated, other similar operations, not just 🐠 fish. Can use my yard!
Love this video!
Love seeing this stuff
hey Rachel awesome video as always, nice trip you took there :D keep up the good work on your videos. what do one has to study to learn all that? I'd love to study that. ty
My stomping grounds!!! How cool!!!
Awesome vid! You should do an update on your gar/monster tank
I need some help for that one, a set of eyes on look out for me to scrape algae before filming. They bite
Hey rachel! I noticed you visited a lot of fish farms in the past, Just wondering do a lot of them allow visitors? And how would one get to visit them? Are they publicly open, invitiations, etc?
id like to hear what you have to say about apistogramma. go from general to specific aabout your favorite. also im lovin the fish farm stuff, my parents are snowbirds and ive been to florida manytimes, u should see the size of the clown loaches at the florida aquarium.
I can't say I'm a fan of Segrest anymore. My store was forced to switch to them and we've had nothing but issues since then. Multiple shipments coming in with ich, both freshwater and marine, fish coming to us with genetic deformities, receiving incorrect fish, and poor packaging with leaking bags. We've only been using them around 3-4 months, and we get this kind of stuff pretty regularly.
Any chances to come overseas and to learn & work with Segrest Farms? @Rachel O'Leary
Love the cichlids at the end of the video
Why are cardinal tetras harder to breed than neons ?? They are both egg scatterers from soft acidic water and have photo sensitive eggs ????
Rachel whats the scientific name for spawing grass? or which plant is it???
Very informative thank you
Finding like blue gill and channel cats was a problem. Once you find a supplier that's half the battle. It's hard to get fish when it's 105 degrees here in Arizona.
Hope you feel better:)
Aqui quem fala é um brasileiro que mora no Brasil e me escrevi no seu canal e gostei muito do video.
Do they sell gold fish
Awesome video keep it coming
I am going into the career of aquaculture :) i have been in all but the segrest farms warehouse place.
Can you do a species spotlight on green neon tetras?
Absolutely
Thank you!
What class was that with "HOW to make a living selling tropical fish"? I'm interested in going to FL for my PhD (a professor's name would be GREAT so I can check on possibly emailing them about being my PhD adviser), and that's something I'm going to do (without any formal education on selling tropical fish) so I'm definitely interested in that (though I'll also be helping conserve wild populations of fish and inverts in the hobby, which includes releasing them back into their original pop if need be). Cool video, and looking forward to the next one!
+Jacob “GreenGo” Green talk to segrest they will tell you all founded to know
Angela you posted this a long time ago, but if you still need any info, I can hook you up with some researches at USF here in Tampa.
@@dockelly4082 I'm interested much appreciated.
ah...so that's where the big box stores get their neons from...always wondered if they were importing them...glad to know they're not.
You mentioned native species. I saw a speaker recently talk about that. What I got from him was, the laws tend to make difficult. Shipping native fish from one state to another can be hard to navigate. It seemed like the legalities fall under the rules of fishing, not collecting. I really wish that, some day, I can see behind the scenes like this vid. I'm sure they only accommodate authors and big UA-camrs.
+Fish Behind Glass Yes, and generally collection is limited to research. And honestly, a lot of the farms open their doors to clubs/members. Segrest does a LOT of tours, which is not typical to the industry, but they are very open with their main facility.
+Rachel O'leary There are a lot of states that allow collection of natives with just a fishing license required. Though selling and shipping those same fish is a different story. I am currently working on a guide of sorts that will state the legality of collecting, keeping, selling and shipping for each state. It will be in laymen terms and have each states legal codes describing so. Also I would like to say I love your channel and have been a fan of your work for years. Like you I also collect what I need for my tanks. Though I think I take it a step further and collect everything for my tanks. I'm talking substrate, rocks, driftwood, plants and fish.
Predation on those outdoor ponds must be a concern. Wonder how they keep birds from flocking to ponds
They use netting as well as hoops.
Beast mode to the maxxxx
nice vedeo
Maybe I missed some vats in the video, there aren't #2000 vats, maybe 250.
pretty cool, what did you like the most at that fish farm?
sounds silly but the reprising of styros for breeding space tickled me to no end
Its like pulling teeth trying to find juvenile shrimp to buy

Do you know anyone who sell's pet breeding pair's of flying fish from the ocean , & the address , & how much they would cost to Southern ppl. in the U.S.A . , if allowed to sell them there ? .
👍👍👍👍
Pls put up your texts for some more seconds each - for me as a german it is hard to listen to your voice and to read and to understand them both in short time - I need to stop the video, which is a little inconvenient.. Great vid!
I don’t get why they are breeding lion fish, you think since they are a pest in the America’s they would just get them from the wild to help decrease the numbers
For people's personal aquariums
So far just women? Awesome!
Much to see ...this girl looks tired
Lol I need to transfer colleges
I literally can't pay attention to anything other than her hair.
Sell to who? I think you need to be in a club..because there are not enough small LFS to buy all those Angel fish you are raising in the basement in old bathtubs like the good old days. But,some people are smooth and maybe can find buyers.
It's always been that LFS would rather pay more for fish wholesale then to the home breeder. Several reasons but that's the way it is.
Those lion fish
what happen your Hair .? 😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃
do bumble bee gobys!
I was really born in the wrong state, I want to take that class...

not much of a fan of these huge fish production fasilities. those lion fish almost made me cry, not even enough room to fully submerge them self, they need way more space than that. so many of them neglect the fish, I feel like it's the reason so many fish species are becoming weak.
Lion fish are invasive fish and they have no natural predators and they destroy reefs they are Beautiful fish but they need controled
Those fish are definitely positioning themselves for food, not over crowded.... it’s a Pavlovian thing to believe you will be fed when your owner walks up to the tank...

Great video
