My favorite part was watching the individual guests. If you stalk one of them for long enough, eventually you'll see the thought "I feel like someone's watching me." appear.
I've gotta say, in the years that have passed since this video, my views on the RollerCoaster Tycoon games have changed somewhat. I'm now a much larger fan of RCT1 and 2, and less of a fan of 3. I still think RCT3 did some great stuff for its time, but I'd now say that RCT2 takes the cake as the best in the series and has aged better than 3.
I have to agree with that. I believe RCT1 eases you more into its intricate system while RCT2 is the most complete once you know your stuff. I like them more than RCT3. With Planet Coaster and Parkitect releasing next to ach other, I gotta give faith to the Parkitect devs that seem to value rct1&2 more so tan RCT3
I got RCT2 in a cereal box. I'm a big fan of RCT3, but it feels like that game will age the fastest, especially the graphics. RCT2 has a certain design that makes it very easy to play and look at years later. Other than the water based stuff which were kind of wonky in 2 and 3, RCT2 is just incredibly complete as a game. The park/business management aspect of 2 is also better than 3. The only main issue I have with 2 is the pathfinding of mechanics.
Lazy Game Reviews I agree. I still go back to play RCT2 often, but don't go back to 3. I find the game play so charming and simple. The pixel art and fun sound design have aged so well.
The second game feels timeless honestly. The options were greatly improved upon and everything became not only a lot more accessible but a lot more feasible. The only negative I have for the second game (which is actually a rather large negative) is the inability to speed up time. Thankfully now that OpenRCT2 exists we can do such a thing so there's really nothing bad to say about the game if you play it via that method now. It also has the ability to use much larger scales in land/water/scenery placement which makes the more irritating segments of gameplay a lot less irritating. I'd love to see you cover that port some day LGR, think you might?
hahaha i just posted a comment about loving the 2 the best prior to seeing this comment. the game provided challenges that truly took work and gave the player a sense of true accomplishment. it's customization of landscape, pathways, and rides doubled from RCT1. lastly, you can pop balloons, drown patrons, and see a fiery, fatal explosion on rides even if it was something as simple as a water slide. so great. i wish i could get it on my mac!
You forgot to mention the greatest joy of this game, collecting all of the people who complain, placing them in a fenced in area and killing them via drowning. Ah memories.
RCT is special for me. My big brother lived abroad in the Netherlands, and he came over for a few days. He brought me a copy of RCT 1. We played this game quite a lot. In fact, I still have some habits from the game that I learnt with him - building a Mery-go-Round right in front of the park four tiles away from the footpath. He also brought me a F1 simulator that was really fun. My brother passed away in 2010. We had a lot of fun together - went to nice concerts where we drank large amounts of beer (and had shawarma after the concert). And we played a lot of games. So... playing RTC will always remind me of him.
I remember having RT2 and creating my own scenario. I'd give the guests excessive money and low tolerance for rides and then make a hedge maze 1 square big with no hedges. They'd walk right in, pay a dollar, walk right out the other side and love it. Had 300 mazes running on that park, earning $300 a second. Memories...
ns9559 yep I found my old game I lost most of them but I've still got one from 2010 I think it was or it might of been 2009 and I can't stop playing it I love that game 😍
i am cleaning out my house to move and i found a huge box full of all my old pc games from the early 2k's , I reinstalled rct2 and figured i would waste some time from my priorities to play, i started playing at 9 am or so, Im pretty intuitive at guessing time without looking at the clock, so im playing and i guess the time as being 11 or 12 ish because it didn't feel like i was playing that long, i look at the clock and its fucking 430pm my whole day wasted. i couldn't believe it i have not sat don and played a game for that long in years
ns9559 absolutely! I'll go months without touching it then play it every day for weeks. I've completed this game at least 5 times in the past 15 years.
The core engine runs in x86 Assembly, the only parts that run in other languages are the version dependencies, for example the Windows version of Rollercoaster Tycoon is 99% Assembly, with the rest of the code being in C to make the Window panel and to hook into DirectX Some other fun facts about the game - Using some of the profit he made off of Transport Tycoon Chris Sawyer actually went and rode 600 different Rollercoasters and got design input from industry leaders in rollercoaster architecture to get a better understanding off how the game should function.
When I was a kid, before I even heard of the term "sandbox mode" I took one of my parks that was super successful (made over a billion dollars when I let it sit for a while), bulldozed the whole park, saved it as a new file, and used that as my "sandbox mode." LOL
There were four parks in the Loopy Landscapes expansion that had no money; Arid Heights, an icy forest, an alien lake, and a populated Mega Park. I probably spend more time in Arid Heights than any other scenario.
You were smarter than me, I thought the take loan button was a "get free money" button and I would just max out the loans and build whatever . After interest piled up I just restarted
One of my favorite gaming memories is with my brother and this game. He kept getting guest complains that the park is untidy. He pans the camera up and down the park and we both search hard. We find no problem. Complains still come in. I suggest searching again from another camera angle. We see the previously obscured exit path from a ride... Well actually, we don't. It's still obscured, every inch buried under a river of vomit.
One fateful afternoon while I was still in primary school my family went to visit a good friend of ours. When we arrived he was playing roller-coaster tycoon 1, I was mind blown. That was the day that I become a massive fan of RCT games, still do this day my all time most favourite game
back in middle school i would day dream all day about what coaster or theme i wanted to build next. when i got my first pc (specifically to play this game) i would get up early before school just to play RCT. just one of those games i could always spend 8-10 hours straight a day on and not give a damn! lol
Sometimes, even after so many years of UA-cam, I get impressed by how the internet has given such talented people the space to create their own shows with often better quality than those of the mainstream media. Thanks for the upload.
This is why so many "gaming shows" have fallen out of fashion. Independent channels create far better quality/far more in depth/far less artificially promoted gaming videos for a fraction of the cost
Actually, you're wrong about there being no sandbox mode - there IS one in the form of the "Mega Park", but it only becomes available when you have completed EVERY LEVEL IN THE GAME. In fact, the actual park map scenario file doesn't even manifest itself in the level folder until this happens.
Specifically, you unlock Mega Park after you clear the game's original 21 scenarios. I believe that was done to ensure you wouldn't get access to such a big, empty park until you were completely comfortable with the game.
Old school LGR, I played RCT1 so much I never watched this video, now I have. You've gotten a ton better with your delivery and I love all your stuff man. Finally subbed.
I always loved the simplicity of the graphics in the first two games. It feels more like playing with a model than trying to build a real-life park, which also adds to the nostalgia.
There is a park in the Loopy Landscapes Expansion (I think) called Arid Heights. It doesn't have to be unlocked, is fairly big and most importantly you have unlimited money. It makes for a pretty good sandbox.
By far my favorite park. I started on vanilla rct1 for a couple years before getting deluxe. And I was amazed at the fact that arid heights had unlimited money. By far my favorite map to play on. It got to a point where I stopped progressing through the scenarios and just played arid heights for months straight
I grew up with THIS game, and I was a toddler when it came out. I have never even played Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 because I never did everything there was to do in Roller Coaster Tycoon 1, let alone Roller Coaster Tycoon 2, and I spent probably multiple weeks of my life just playing this game. I remember I would name parks or my favorite rides or what would have been their favorite rides after my best friends or family (geez, I was a sentimental kid). This game means so much to me, and I'm glad you did a review on it because now I'm going to go back and start playing again.
I grew up playing RCT1, and recently got back into it, after finding it on Steam. Its a great nostalgia trip for me, and it was nice seeing a review of the game, since I haven't seen anyone talk about this game on the internet before, (although I was never really looking...), but I've watched several of your videos, and stumbled across this, and it made my day to hear you talk about this game, especially after having an emotional breakdown a few minutes ago. And even though I love the game, all the windows that open when you try to do anything is pretty dang annoying. Thanks for this!
This video brings back soooo many memories. My mom played Sims religiously and my sister and I played Roller Coaster Tycoon even more. Thats how a big part of my childhood time was spent. I especially liked making amazing parks just to get tons of people and then open an unfinished coaster to throw hundreds of tiny people into a fiery death. Goooood times.
And now there is even an OpenRCT2, an open-source rewrite which improves everything about this classic game. There some of the things mentioned are addressed - screen resolution is one of them. Speed up mode. It totally rekindled my passion for this game.
Used to play RTC1 at my aunts when I was a kid. Bought a copy on steam years back, hopped back into it for a bit then started playing RTC classic on my phone again and I’m addicted. The game’s graphics give it a nice 2000s charm that keeps me coming back and its just so fun having to manage your park and prices and succeed
All I have to say is this game aged really well. Considering how old it is the graphics are quite good even by todays standards and it still hours and hours of entertainment any time you load it up.
RCT and The Sims 1 are the reason I am now, as an adult, addicted to simulation games. I don't need a big story, I just need a large sandbox and you can leave me for the next few weeks with a fridge and a toilet and I need nothing more.
After all the talking, the last few seconds where you just...HEAR the game, is instantly showing you why it's such an amazing game. It's just so calm, so chill, perfect sounds to to ehears. I would love a ASMR of just RollerCoaster Tycoon in the background.
What makes this one of my favorites of your videos to this very day is all the hilarious names you keep giving all of your rides. Every time I watch it, I keep finding a new joke hidden in all the scrolling signs. XD
This game was everywhere when I was growing up. It showed up on school computers and at the Scholastic Book Fair for years, and kids bought copies en masse. I played this all the time in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades, and I still do to this day. It's just one of those games that remains timeless and a fantastic experience to revisit.
I was kinda disappointed with RCT3 when it came out. Being able to use the rides was awesome tho. I'd say RCT2 is the best one in the series, as it's an improved but definetly same-playing sequel. With a sandbox mode.
I didn't understand this game at all as a kid, I watched my dad play it. The sound effects and visuals of this game bring back so much nostalgia. I love it.
Things I loved that you didn't mention here: 1) Whimsical food stalls. I loved those designs! And everything was exactly one tile square, so it was very satisfying to drop a booth into a tiny spot. 2) Underground and nighttime gameplay. I don't think either of those made it to RCT3, and I was very disappointed. 3) I preferred the art style for the characters in RCT2. They seemed a bit too cartoonish in RCT3. 4) Discovering the joys of near-miss pathing and track placement. Free excitement with no nausea! On the other hand, it was great to be able to rotate the map in RCT3, because some things were very frustrating to place, in this game. All in all, I'd say Planet Coaster is the ultimate, but it takes a mighty rig, if your park gets very large.
I love the scenarios of 1, and the improved mechanics and options in 2. I wish you could import the scenarios from the first one with some extra stuff from 2.
I remember picking this up back in '99. I was obsessed with it for a good while. And then I picked up the Loopy Landscapes (includes Corkscrew Follies) Expansion 2 Pack a while later down the road. I still love the first two games, and RCT1 will even run fresh out of the box on Windows 10, as long as you enable the DirectPlay feature.
6:40: Watch out for those lateral G's! Use banked turns so you don't go over 2.5. This is what's causing your intensity to go through the roof, which is killing your excitement and keeping everyone away from your ride. I liked the window driven interface, and didn't like the new UI in RCT3. In fact, I didn't like RCT3 at all. I played it for a bit and then went back to RCT2. If you want to get the best RCT experience, I strongly recommend playing OpenRCT2, which is a source port of RCT2 that is also compatible with all of the RCT1 content and runs well on modern systems. You can't find a better theme park management game than that.
me too. It took a long time before I could find the original in a magazine that came with CD-rom back then. The full games for the price of the magazine!
this was my childhood man. it was awesome when i figured out you could make buildings by raising land and stuff and using the brick wall sidings and such. i just wish there would have been more options for themes.
This is definitely one of my favorite games... I remember getting it out of a box of cereal and sending hours on it. Eventfully I got the GOG version, which I got on sale for 99 cents. I find it really relaxing to play, and it always lifts my spirits.
RCT2 should be treated as a glorified Expansion Pack to 1. A very good one in fact, since it includes EVERYTHING from 1 (minus the RCT1 scenarios, but they've been remade by fans for RCT2 and can be downloaded), but on top of that adds quite a bit. RCT3 is quite different from RCT1 and 2, both with good (you can ride your coasters, 3D and the landscaping included in it, customizable scenery, etc) and bad points (can't kill guests, long load times, buggy engine). I think both are worth having though: RCT2 for the scenarios (download RCT1 scenarios with it), and RCT3 for sandbox.
The thing with RCT2 for me is, that you have so much stuff there right at the beginning. I am not as happy if i get new stuff because i already have anything i need to build a big park. I still think it is an Awsome game but the scenarios in RCT1 have a much better Gamedesign
RCT without any expansions is actually pretty different than RCT2. The expansions really add a lot that make it more like 2, with music, more options for queue lines, path signs, etc. I personally like to play RCT without any expansions just because when you add them to the game, it's essentially RCT2 without some of the rides and parks.
If I remember right, cause it was a long, long time ago, but I used to just go into the game files and lopen the mega park file to play sandbox. I never even beat the first 5 levels.
Man, I need to make it a goal to beat this game. I couldn't complete some of the later scenarios even after re-visiting this as an adult a number of years ago, lol
I played this game back in college. Spent hours designing and tweaking rollercoaster rides. Loved and certainly enjoyed the game. After watching the review, I don't think the game is old even nowadays. 🙂
Ugh, don't remind me... although, they've said there's a "PC experience" of RCT4 coming later this year. But honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if that sucked too. EDIT NOV. 2016: Yep.
My favorite part was watching the individual guests. If you stalk one of them for long enough, eventually you'll see the thought "I feel like someone's watching me." appear.
i use to find a gust just entering the park. and put a tracker on them. and follow which rides they went on and everything they did
LonelyAssassin96 and when you could make them throw up and fling them around ❤😍
LonelyAssassin96 - YES! 😄😄😄
You could rename them too. :)
😂 I never knew this!

+Lazy Game Reviews whoops didn't notice that! :)
+Rebecca Moffatt haha glad to see I wasn't the only one
+Gryffindor44 It wasn't on PS2, you must be thinking of Xbox.
Gryffindor44 huh, weird. Are you 100% sure it was RCT and not something like thrillville?
RCT is special for me. My big brother lived abroad in the Netherlands, and he came over for a few days. He brought me a copy of RCT 1. We played this game quite a lot. Oscar Scheepstra Great story dude. I hope that playing the game will continue to bring you all of those memories about him.
+Oscar Scheepstra ;-;
Did he die on a rollercoaster
may your brother Rest In Peace
Eating shoarma after a concert is a must or a patatje oorlog.

I'm gonna do that except hide them in buildings, so my Realistic Park Meter doesn't go haywire and I can make serious bank.
Srsly amazing
WRITE THAT DOWN WRITE THAT DOWN!!!
Yes, sir, the ultramegasuperduper fat burger costs only ten cents. But, mind you, the toilet admittance fee is 25 bucks.
If that happened to me I'd probably just take a shit next to the restroom's wall
Leopoldo Aranha ah RCT, the gane where you can be mr krabs
I'd buy the burger to take a shit in
You're asking for people to be taking a dump wherever they want.
I'd buy them, take them home, and eat them there :3
This game was my 12 year old self's meth. You never recover from the addiction, you are just in remission.

ns9559 - Exactly. 👍
The most impressive part is he coded this from the ground up in assembly. That's why it runs on nearly everything.
'Limitations of the Game Engine', there isn't a game engine, it's your processor

And the actor of Aragorn _really_ broke his toe in that one scene
My favorite part is that if someone in the park is in a bad mood, you can literally pick them up with a giant pair of tweezers. And *murder* them.
I'm scared to let my little brother to to Disney World now... stupid little crybaby.
Edit: Maybe he actually deserves it.
If you hold onto them with the tweezers for a long enough time they get angrier and angrier too
The calming voice you speak in while saying and doing the most hilarious things ever makes these reviews the best ever in my opinion.
I remember buying a box Captain Crunch with a copy of RCT in it. Cereal companies aren't half as cool as they used to be.
Man...those days were the best.
I got mine the same way, both RCT and RCT 2 from Post cereals.
I think I did, too. The best decision I ever forced my mum to make.
Burger King's kids meals had games like these too.
I got corkscrew follies from a cereal box
Ah yes, the childhood game that introduced me to sadism.
10 years ago? This video is timeless. What an incredible review.
Excitement: Low
Intensity: Very High
Nausea: Up to the Sky
My whole childhood RCT experiences XD

Some maps don't require money.
Asher Pinson good question, I don't recall come to think of it, very similar ha
There were four parks in the Loopy Landscapes expansion that had no money; Arid Heights, an icy forest, an alien lake, and a populated Mega Park. I probably spend more time in Arid Heights than any other scenario.

$10 to take a dump in Clint's amusement park. Yayyyy XD
literally my favorite game of all time.
“I WANT TO GET OFF MR. BONES’ WILD RIDE!”

RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 is my favorite still. It improves on one and still has that nice charm.

Its sort of like a model railroad. Watching the whole park work can be so mesmerizing.
2023 and this game still hits hard 😩
It will hit hard as long as there are computers and electricity
I loved that game. It was my childhood.
Subbed, love these 'nostalgic' game reviews
Thank you!

You get a million dollars and the scenario goal "Have fun!"

@@childalpha6954 You can do that in 2 as well, by just making your own scenario.

This made me want to go play RCT3. When I was a kid, it was my second favorite PC game after Zoo Tycoon 2 (because I was obsessed with animals).
Wow someone in this comments section that likes RCT3. That's great! Nice to see someone who likes it here
@@childalpha6954 i like too, even tho PlanetCoaster is E.X.C.E.L.L.E.N.T

The Gold Tycoon Series
I always loved the simplicity of the graphics in the first two games. It feels more like playing with a model than trying to build a real-life park, which also adds to the nostalgia.

Yes. Later on in Loopy Landscapes, you also get Megaworld Park, which can make for a good sandbox once you've completed its objective.

Probably because it's a 2D game, 2D games aged very well imo, more if it's mid 90s or late 90s 2D.
I remember replacing a lot of the audio files with Joe Satriani songs lol. Being greeted with Crushing Day at the main menu really got me in the mood.
I remember when I got that game back in 2000 or so. I would set up food and beverage stands to be free but charge $50 to use the restroom!! LOL
My god the AMBIANCE.
The sounds of an amusement park sends shivers down my spine.
Remember this game, good times. Still have the 2nd one I think.
This game was a significant part of my childhood, I spent MANY hours building successful theme parks, and I still occasionally come back to this game.
I remember I used to play this all the time when I was little. Once my roller coaster crashed and killed some people and I threw a fit and cried.
RCT and The Sims 1 are the reason I am now, as an adult, addicted to simulation games. I don't need a big story, I just need a large sandbox and you can leave me for the next few weeks with a fridge and a toilet and I need nothing more.
I remember playing this game. Can you review RCT2 and RCT3, please?
After all the talking, the last few seconds where you just...HEAR the game, is instantly showing you why it's such an amazing game. It's just so calm, so chill, perfect sounds to to ehears. I would love a ASMR of just RollerCoaster Tycoon in the background.
I just found my sister's old copy of Roller Coaster Tycoon Gold and I've been playing for 2 days straight
Older sister or Younger sister?
Shinx Plays Older
@@actuaiiyyou Oh... Perhaps maybe you can play together again sometime! 😄
What makes this one of my favorites of your videos to this very day is all the hilarious names you keep giving all of your rides. Every time I watch it, I keep finding a new joke hidden in all the scrolling signs. XD
this is by far my favorite game of all time
This game was everywhere when I was growing up.
I love it.
Even the Retrospective is now over 10 years old.
Retrospective on Retrospectives?
My favorite LGR quote thus far: “if someone really needs to take a dump...” I could not put it more eloquently myself.
8:37 10 bucks to use the crapper 🤣
This brought back great memories from my childhood. I loved this game and other building/management games. Thanks for this review!
Oh man, I miss this game.
Thanks but it's literally impossible because I have a Mac. :(
Excaliber DG11 Haha no I don't want to kill myself
+Lauren Hannah A Mac? my condolences.
+Lauren Hannah there is a free program called winebottler that enables you to run windows applications, it might work.
+Lauren Hannah For the adventurous, you can run Windows on your Mac directly via boot camp or in a virtual machine via something like vmware
All in all, I'd say Planet Coaster is the ultimate, but it takes a mighty rig, if your park gets very large.
this video is 11 years old. can we get a retrospective Review of this video?
RCT was 12 years old when the video was dropped
Here in 2021! Still love the look of this game and have great memories playing it as a young teen when it came out waaaay back in the day
I'd say skip 1 and 3. 2 was the best
it has a sad theme song though
Yes I agree. 2 was always my favorite.
I love the scenarios of 1, and the improved mechanics and options in 2. I wish you could import the scenarios from the first one with some extra stuff from 2.
B5429671 XJ the IOS “RCT Classic” puts both 1 and 2 together into one app. It really is an amazing app, you should check it out if you haven’t alread
@@og3171995 I got it on Android and I didn't really like the changes because this is a classic. I'll download it on my new Chromebook, though.
oh my gosh, this appearing on my recommendations and now I'm hit with memories of this game. I loved this game when I was a kid
Played this on steam yesterday, still an awesome game!
That one is basically rct1 with some elements from rct2
Aw man, I loved this game so much. Thanks for enlightening me that a fellow Scot was the man behind a childhood favourite.
I always enjoyed picking up my employees in the animal costumes and unceremoniously dropping them in the nearest body of water.
"This park will give you aids".
man LGR has been been delivering high quality content for years now. Thanks for recommendation youtube
"People dying, so inconsiderate of your profit margin."
LGR predicting 2020
Just seeing and hearing that nain screen brought back so many wonderful childhood hours.
6:34 Lol there is no engine, the game was created completely in assembly coding which is insanely impressive
I hadn't realised LGR had been making videos for this long
Since 2006!
@@LGR you should try Open Roller coaster tycoon 2! It has multiplayer and bug fixes
It's funny because RCT2 fixed most of the problems with RCT1
I love that OpenRCT2 fixed virtually every complaint in this review.
It's not causing high intensity level, but high nausea level
Holy shit i cannot believe how your video/ editing quality was even 11 years ago!!
Never actually got the original... But I played the hell out of the demo version.
me too. It took a long time before I could find the original in a magazine that came with CD-rom back then. The full games for the price of the magazine!
this was my childhood man. it was awesome when i figured out you could make buildings by raising land and stuff and using the brick wall sidings and such. i just wish there would have been more options for themes.
I don't know about you, but when I quit I do it like a boss.
I put some epic music, press alt+ tab, ctrl alt del, alt f4 and close process
The production quality of this video is remarkably great considering how old it is.
i find that rct2 is my favourite out of the three with rct being second and rct3 being 3rd
This is definitely one of my favorite games... I remember getting it out of a box of cereal and sending hours on it. Eventfully I got the GOG version, which I got on sale for 99 cents. I find it really relaxing to play, and it always lifts my spirits.
"That's life"
Ayyyyyyyyyy
One thing that sets the original apart from the sequels are the scenarios, they’re so much better in the original 👌🏻
Is it just me, or does the original look EXACTLY like RCT2?
On the contrary, it's that the second one looks almost exactly like the first! Both use the same basic engine.
Most of the changes are in the technical section, like larger maps, more rides, etc
Some rides has been changed even, for better or worse.
Easily one of my favourite games of all time. Masterpiece
Too bad you didn't know about the Mega Park, this is essentially a sandbox that is unlocked after you beat the game
If I remember right, cause it was a long, long time ago, but I used to just go into the game files and lopen the mega park file to play sandbox. I never even beat the first 5 levels.
omgwtfbbqxD it is quite possible that strategy works
Man, I need to make it a goal to beat this game. I couldn't complete some of the later scenarios even after re-visiting this as an adult a number of years ago, lol
I played this game back in college. Spent hours designing and tweaking rollercoaster rides. Loved and certainly enjoyed the game. After watching the review, I don't think the game is old even nowadays. 🙂
Luckly with openRTC we can speed up the game and complete everything in few hours :)
I spent so much time playing this on my best friend's computer when I was younger. Such a fun game.
Too bad that the 4th game in the roller-coaster tycoon series is only a watered down pay to play pile of shit on a fucking mobile phone.
Ugh, don't remind me... although, they've said there's a "PC experience" of RCT4 coming later this year. But honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if that sucked too.
EDIT NOV. 2016: Yep.
I read the PC version of the 4th game will be out in about 6 months or so.
I know what you are talking about, I have high hopes for it. This better not be another Sim City 2013
Lazy Game Reviews This ever come about?
