- Novo Combo was a power pop and New Wave rock group who enjoyed some popularity in the early 1980s. The initial lineup was Pete Hewlett, Stephen Dees, Jack Griffith and drummer Michael Shrieve, formerly with Santana. Carlos Rios replaced Jack Griffith on the band's second album. The band scored minor hits in 1981 with the songs "Up Periscope" and "City Bound."

Have this on vinyl. Great track. Always thought some municipal transit corporation should use it as an ad song.
This song should have been a smash hit all over the planet...Sadly, 9 out of 10 people, at minimum, have never heard of it...
Well it was a hit in Caracas Venezuela. I remember listening to it frequently as it played over there.
well make that 10 or 11 now;p
I’ve loved it since high school. I still find it mesmerizing.
I had this album!
I first heard this in the early 80s when in high school and I still find it mesmerizing.
me too on WNEW-FM in NYC
@@fasteddie9867 yes exactly. I still listen to it when it’s dark and dreary here in NY.
Out of print. Classic KROQ!
HA " I know exactly what you mean. I grew up listening to that station in the '80s through high school and I used to have this album along with many others.👍✌️
I still have the original Vinyl release...a true collector's item...
got em all as well.., phenomenal band..
Likewise! I have both (dunno if they released more than 2 lps; I'll have to look) and need to record them to digital. Loved almost all the tracks.
I grew up with Jackie in North Charleston,WV. Haven’t see him for many years.
I heard this for the first time the other day on the radio and liked it enough to search for it. Cool song!
NOVO COMBO.........les meilleurs !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nice to hear a drummer paying fealty to the greatest drummer of the recent history, Stewart Copeland! The Rhythmatist will live forever in the music.
A good song with an on the nose The Police influence.
Beeng looking for it for ages❤❤
Heard them at a small nightclub in Fort Collins, Colorado in the 80's.
Later, wore out the cassette tape.
In 80-ties in Poland on "Trojka Radio" broadcasts, DJ Mr Marek Niedzwiedzki played Novo Combo's songs frequently. "City Bound E-train" was among one of my favourites.
Pozdrawiam.

The opening notes sound so much like "Message in a Bottle" (Police). For YEARS I thought this was the Police or...Grateful Dead. I only heard it once on the radio-no one I met had ever heard of it before. After so long you begin to wonder if such a song even exists...I LOVE You Tube!
I agree! Shrieve’s drumming reminds me a lot of Stewart Copeland. Both bands started around the same time. Coincidence? He really bangs the drums on Sorry for the Delay. I always get pumped up after hearing that song!
Take me back to a good time
I had the distinct pleasure of working a show with Novo Combo way back in the early 80's in a now long gone club in Passaic, New Jersey....(The Joker II which became Hitsville)....They were on point and meeting Michael Shrieve made the night!!
My best friend's sister Jennifer dated the Guitarist. Jack. Jack later went into politics. The drummer Mike Schreive (the guy who played with Santana at Woodstock was staying at an apartment. I worked nearby and delivered a set of keys to him. I was 15. A nice regular guy. Tilled
@@robertadinolfi4217 That's really funny Robert. Imagine me a Politician. No, I never went into politics. Too dirty a business for me. I am however working again with Novo Combo and presently working on a new CD. jg 2023
I played in band that opened for Novo Combo in the early 80’s - the club was in Dover, NJ called “The Showplace” - as you said, it was great meeting Michael.
Aaah the golden era of the New Jersey club circuit...& I worked each and every one of them 🎶🇺🇸
I remember this group when I moved to Belgium from California in the early 80s
This song popped into my head, I got to UA-cam, and voila! I haven't heard this song since the 80's!
Same here, only 4 years later!
I haven’t heard this since my band *played* this … in the 80’s. At the Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach.
1st time I heard this song was on a nickelodeon show for teens called "Livewire" in the early 80's... not sure if I've heard it since, just had a memory and took a chance that I might find it 40 years or so later. Thank you!
My Dad turned me on to this band. I put them on a mix tape and played it on my Aiwa personal tape player,( a Non-Sony Walkman)
The first time I heard this it was playing in the background while I was shopping at Backstage Records in St. Louis, I asked the clerk who it was and bought the cassette.
@A.J.St Pierre This is the best of the tight hot 80's shit that ever happened. Very smart sounding. I saw these guys at a Laclede's Landing Club on the St. Louis riverfront about '85. Shrieve broke the bass drum head in the 2nd song. They stopped and he fielded questions for about 10 minutes and then they resumed. It was hypnotic!
SINGLE BEST single of the new wave era...
super love love love love
i have taken the city bound E many times. great song. thanks for the post.
Best song ever first time when I hearths sounds was happy.
I remember this band well....I could swear sharing the stage with them but
Hard to remember everything from the 80's
like this song a lot it brings me nice memories..!!!!!
bit of Stewart and the Police going on here...nice tune!
Michael Shrieve was around before Stewart, so it might be the other way around.
@@mutterslog785 I think the same as you
(Just before black glassed general introduced martial law in Poland).
Wspomnienie z odległych lat swobody. Osobiście - koniec podstawówki akurat wtedy mi wypadł.
Desmond Child worked on that song. One of his first effort as a songwriter. He went on to redefine rock in the eighties (Bon Jovi, Kiss, Alice Cooper, Joan Jett, Michael Bolton, Cher...).
Tattoo also received radio airplay.
Fabulous tune❤❤❤ tattoo
Wikipedia says Novo Combo was planning to record a new album in 2020, which was probably postponed due to Covid. Does anyone have any update on this album? Will it be the original members?
Yes, and Yes. Novo Combo 45W 55 St. 2023
Brings back memories of my youth new wave era dancing to this music in clubs like electric circus The fun house and Underground in New York City
Another lost chart hit not available on streaming services.
Why?
Thamks for posting.
Drumming definitely influenced by Stewart Copeland.
It might be the other way round.
Michael Shrieve (born July 6, 1949) is an American drummer, percussionist, and composer. He is best known as the drummer of the rock band Santana, playing on the band's first seven albums from 1969 to 1974. At age 20, Shrieve was the second youngest musician to perform at Woodstock. His drum solo during "Soul Sacrifice" in the Woodstock film has been described as "electrifying."
Shrieve left Novo Combo after the first album.
Stewart Copland didn't join Curved Air until 1975 and the Police in 1977. I would guess Shrieve influenced Stewart Copland.
