  • "There are no style points in golf." This is a lesson I learned early on in my career and one I like to be reminded of. I was able to sit down with old friend Phil Blackmar to talk about competition, scoring and teaching new players.

I love the comment " I wasn't there to socialise with you and pat you on the back - I was there for me." I also remember someone saying it came as a shock when they first joined the tour to find out these guys are mostly selfish. And some of them are complete jerks. Only the score keeps you on tour; a wonderful personality isn't part of entry.

Hey Phil, in this interview it seems like you still have a bad attitude.

I always say that the score card just wants a number not a story, Seve was the best at it.

Mike can you please do a video on what you think of how Tiger’s playing lately and what you see? Seems like he’s swinging great and having some fun with his game

Another fabulous video. Let’s play golf, not golf swing. A lot of ways to get it done - that’s the beauty of the game.

I just can’t get kids to understand this and it’s driving me nuts as a coach

That's because the kid should go with what their personality is! They don't necessarily have to be a filled blackmar or a Lee trevino. They need to be themselves. Sure Phil Blackmore has this competitive vibe in this cold Vibe or whatever it is but it's not like he went out and tore up the tour or anything! I wouldn't consider him an elite golfer. Obviously he would be elite amongst average players or somewhat better players but he is definitely not Elite with the world's best. There are a lot of ways to get it done. Some people like to talk some people don't some people would rather socialize some people rather be in their own little bubble whatever it is. But if you're trying to get kids to fit into a box because they should be more competitive or more Cutthroat that's very unhealthy especially if it's a sensitive child or someone who's a lot more team oriented or considerate. Maybe they like commending their playing Partners maybe they like watching their playing partner shots or enjoy the camaraderie of a high five or whatever it is. Each person is going to be their own individual and should play that way. So two extreme contrasts would be Tiger Woods and his prime fist pumping all intense no mercy and then Rocco media strolling around talking to people hanging out with his caddy smoking a cigar etc.
