WOOOHOOO - UNBLOCKED :) I want to thank Ixi from Ixi Music for jumping in a helping the video get released form the block!! If you want to check her out and say thank you - ua-cam.com/users/iximusic
Wow what an amazing crossover! And a great result from it 🤘😆
Yeah! Great news! I love APC I wanted to see you breaking in down and enjoying the tunes. Much love form Costa Rica.
LOL hell yeah! ixi is the coolest 😎
Really? So now there's yet another reason why Ixi is awesome :)
Literally just came directly from Ixi's breakdown of Billy Howerdel's debut solo album "From What Normal Was" (Guitarist and creative heart of APC.) Probably another album you should check out. Billy spent some serious time on the production of that album. Kismet!
This makes me wanna listen to all of Thirteenth Step again. It's an absolute masterpiece. Drummer Josh Freese is amazing.
He crushes it on this album. Easily one of the best albums for drums of all time. His sexy ghost notes and hi hat work are amazing.
Never heard such drum play when thirteenth step came out. The noose legit made me addicted.
The production is pristine on 13th.
“There is no perfect album.”
13th Step: “Hold my beer.”
@@quantumastrologer5599 Maynard said on a recent interview I’ve seen with him he told Josh to do the stops in the beginning because he’s never heard that before. But it’s absolutely perfect and Josh knew exactly what he meant and performed it perfectly
The Noose will always be Top 5 all time for me. Nothing haunts me like that song continues to after all these years.
Same, ex-wife feels over here haha
Absolutely love *The Noose*
So Long and Thank You For All the Fish is a line from Douglas Adam's Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. It's what the dolphins say as they're leaving the planet before it gets destroyed. The opening verse is also very much in the style of Hitchhiker's Guide as well and human's priority. Which leads into the statement that the dolphins are the most intelligent species on the planet because all they do is swim around and play vs fretting over jobs, digital wrist watches, and bank accounts.
Also, I'd recommend watching the video for the song. It's very Truman Show / 1950-60's TV feeling. Lots of smiles and everything going mad around them.
Thank you for that .. and the number is 42
@@daggerSLADE 👍😅😂🤣
Also the Title of Douglas Adams' fourth book in the (increasingly misnamed) Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy trilogy.
@@daggerSLADE yep, 42 is the integer (decimal) ASCII value for the asterisk symbol '*' which tends to mean "anything and/or everything", so 42 means: The answer/meaning to everything (the universe) is "anything and everything" lol the whole point is that the meaning of the universe is pointless, just live your life and be happy.
I wasnt about to type this much so thank you for all the fish.
The Noose was inspired by a line Maynard heard someone say in an AA meeting - 'Don't let that halo slip down around your neck and choke you...' - The really juicy part to this story is the legend that Maynard was supporting Layne Staley as a friend by accompanying him there on that particular night. Which makes it so much more imoactful.
Disillusioned is underrated. Powerful and so relevant these days. We all need limited screen time lol
Only today I realized he might be talking about silicone that goes into electric devices and not the one that goes into (mainly female) bodies...
Yeah! He’s talking about the silicone phone cases. Classic MJK
@@burningtheevidence8038 He's absolutely talking about cell phones.
@@MikeCalhoun Yes, as a non-native speaker I wasn't quite aware of the difference between siliconE and silicon.
Still funny/interesting though how you create your own interpretation based on wrong input :)
@@burningtheevidence8038 Watch the music video for the song. It makes it pretty clear. It's also just a damn good video.
FYI, unlike Tool where MJK is backing himself, most of the harmonies on APC are MJK and Billy Howerdel who is a very underrated vocalist
Weak and Powerless: "Tiling my own grave to keep me level." - best line ever
You’ll have to listen to Thirteenth Step from start to finish. It’s a concept album and the linear flow is fantastic.
Totally agree!
For anyone unaware- 'So Long and Thanks' is a reference to the fourth book of the original Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams.
If you're here, you'd probably enjoy the books.
I came here to say this. The dolphins are also directly part of the same (HHGTTG) - after all, they are the ones saying “So long and thanks for all the fish” as they leave the planet.
Don't Panic! The vibe of the song 100% matches the tone of Douglas Adams' books.
He's also singing about all the famous people that died within the last year when the song was released.
Honestly Mer De Noms is a masterpiece
Exactly. Nothing can top that album.
It was a perfect moment and I think not even those who were involved could recreate it.
@@barbarusbloodshed6347 well... they could recreate it with different effects and a wider soundscape... but I know what you mean.
"Man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much-the wheel, New York, wars and so on-whilst all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time. But conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man-for precisely the same reasons."
Love to see you do Brena. It’s such an overlooked song
That's one of Maynards strongest vocal melodies. I wouldn't say there's an obviously better APC tune either.
Yes yes YES to the underrated/ overlooked comment! It's a magical piece and would love to have him break it down. Great song choice!
@@carissa1033 I think he’d like that one a lot. I think he’d like the vast majority of their catalog
I agree! Brena is one of my faves of all time!
"Little angel go away
Come again some other day
The devil has my ear today
I'll never hear a word you say
He promised I would find a little solace
And some piece of mind
Whatever just as long as I don't feel so
desperate and powerless" - weak and powerless
I'm SO glad you finally heard The Noose. One of my favorite tracks of all time. Hard not to get emotional when I hear it. Loved your reaction.
I always get goosies when Halo hits heavy in the middle of the song ❤
It was my 21st birthday when this album was released. September 16th 2003, I’ll never forget coming home and putting it the CD player for the first time
Bought 13th Step on release day and also got goosebumps listening to the Noose. Still do!
Bought it on release date too, but earlier because Europe, 12th September 2003
Released on my 19th birthday. Absolutely earth shattering album.
@@heistkev we're same age
Oh, God yes...'The Noose' is one of my favorite tracks, not just by APC, by ANYONE, ever. An absolutely, beautifully gut-wrenching masterpiece.
Mer de noms is one of the most beautiful albums ever written imo. It's perfect.
Disillusioned is one of the most beautiful songs ever made.
Thirteenth Step is the prettiest record I own. It’s mood music but when I’m in that mood nothing else hits quite like it. Howerdel is the master of knowing exactly what note to play and when to play it. That record hits feelings for me that nothing else does or will.
I’ve always liked Tool and Perfect Circle, but I’ve been OBSESSED with Down By the River (I know this isn’t the actual title)I LOVE that line “Til the tide betrays you and your empty elocutions”
“By And Down The River”. Also obsessed.
Geebz - If you haven’t already, you should check out the Interview that Rick Beato just released with Maynard. They discuss his approach to song writing and how that dynamic differs with each project. It’s an hour long and well worth a watch.
So glad to see some Eat the elephant songs. Such a brilliant album
Nope.
@@ndnd2023 It's not a bad album. I rather listen to Eat the Elephant over their Emotive album.
@@ndnd2023 Nope to you.
Hourglass is their greatest song. Not to mention, Hourglass the sounds the closest to a fusion of musical elements from all 3 bands Maynard contributes his vocal, tonality, and lyrical genius into.
It went from my least fav Maynard album to second favorite after just a couple of listens.
I absolutely love So Long and Thanks for all the Fish. I can't explain why, it gets me kind of teary eyed. The combination of the music, the way Maynard sings and the lyrics all combine to really hit me in a way that makes me feel reflective while also pondering the future of us as a people. Maynard just hits different, man.
idk why, but for some reason this one feels like a cranberries cover
I have exactly the same reaction
100% with you on this, it has exactly the same effect on me
I just love the layers. It's both a serious track and a self reflective satirical track. It holds the mirror up to society and the ephemeral, superficial things we value that essentially have little to no meaning. The composition is so great but there's an intense straighfaced humour and wit going through it. It took me a few listens to catch the vibe of the track. It seems a bit more of a departure for them APC, it has a pop edge to it but don't be fooled it is nourishing pop music. It definitely has substance to it like you'd expect from Maynard Keenan and Billy Howerdell. The lyrics are so scathing, darkly humourous and brilliant.
Isn’t Billy singing on “Thanks for all the…”?
Great choice of songs for the slow burn. Gawds, I don't know why but there is something in the musicality of Disillusioned which just makes me cry every time.
The original meaning for "The Noose" is about an anonymous alcoholic member who cleaned their act up and is on good terms with himself, but what about all the people that person hurt with his behavior, is he on good terms with them too? That's was I read at least
'So Long and Thanks for All the Fish' is a reference to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy when the dolphins all left the earth because they knew the world was doomed. I would guess that the name drops in the song are referring to the folk that died the year around the song's writing.
Well, Willy Wonka, Major Tom, Marilyn Monroe didn’t die the year this was written, but they’re all pop-culture icons and call back to what‘s often perceived as a better past that the song suggests is dead and gone.
With regards to dolphins 🐬: Well, humans are only the third most intelligent species on earth 😂
@@BirdBrain0815 Muhammad Ali (Ali), Carrie Fisher (Leia), Gene Wilder (Willie Wonka), and Tom Petty (Major Tom) all died around 2016-2017 when this song was being written. Marilyn Monroe's name drop wasn't in the same verse so I don't think she's one of the dolphins that the song refers to.
@@dbatch2826 Major Tom is probably a reference to David Bowie.
@@NIN2277 Oh, damn... I forgot he died and just focused on an actual Tom. You're absolutely right. He passed around the same time.
@@dbatch2826 Oh, wow, I didn't realize the real people behind some of those characters died around that time. That's interesting, thanks.
Happy to see “So Long and Thanks…” on here. Such a great song and one that usually brings me to tears, with the horrifying thought of “my God, what have we done?”
Really? I always thought of it as a corny soundtrack to like a video yearbook. I even think I read the music was a parody to deliver a bleek message. 😊
Love that song. Such a cool dynamic in lyrics vs instrumental.
@@kentrey the whole point of the composition.
I love the almost uncomfortable silence during 'Disillusioned' Kinda matching the theme of the song. That we're so constantly stimulated by technology that stopping and self-reflecting and deeply connecting with other people is a skill that is atrophying for so many. Best song by APC in my opinion. 🤘
FUN FACT: The first Perfect Circle album was made on Guns'n' Roses studio time when they were making Chinese Democracy but the band was never there to come in and record so the engineer was waiting around bored so he brought in A Perfect Circle and engineered them instead and made their 1st record and the rest is history.
This is a false rumor.
Not one single note of any Perfect Circle album was done on Guns N’ Roses studio time!
I was working as an engineer for Guns N’ Roses (my day job) during the making of the first APC record. I’ve heard this rumor before, but figured I’d come on here again clear the air.
All recording was done at my home studio in North Hollywood, Scott Humphrey’s home studio in Hollywood Hills or sound city in Van Nuys, CA
@@billyhowerdel123 if this is really Billy H, holy pants, you're great!!! Your music's meant so much to so many, thanks!
@@billyhowerdel123 Thanks for clearing that up! So cool that you found the Geebs! And thanks for all the fish!
@billyh can you give any more insight to the making of the album? Also would love to ask you more questions if you're even willing to answer
Dissolutioned is probably one of the deepest and most important songs of our time. Take a deep dive into the lyrics.
Still here! Weak and Powerless actually has way more going on in the mix than you can tell even with awesome headphones. Beato does a great job pulling apart the tracks and his video is worth watching to hear all of the different things happening in that song. It's ridiculous. Great video!
He farted on that video and then edited it out after 24 hours because of comments
Still here, watching a reaction of 'disillusioned' on my phone...or the silicon obsession
I do wish APC had more albums, but I'm perfectly content with Maynard having two other insane bands lol
it's probably already said..but the phrase so long and thanks for all the fish is from the book hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy. where all the dolphins left earth because of our impending destruction.
The Noose has become one of my favourite songs. So freaking powerful stuff
Rick Beato does an awesome breakdown of Weak and Powerless. Such a well written song
Such an amazingly unique band in a sea of 'regulars'...Have always LOVED A Perfect Circle, so many great songs across their discography!
I was driving in my car when I first listen to this track. I went to school in western Pennsylvania, which is more rural than it is suburban and urban, so to get to the music store took me driving to a different county. So I bought the album when it came out and spent the evening driving, listening, and smoking cigarettes.
A Perfect Circle is my #1 Favorite Band Ever!❤
Disillusioned is extremely depressing, knowing how truly addicted to our electronics we’ve become.
I often catch myself wasting precious time staring into my phone at utterly meaningless things, and completely disconnected from the world. That song is a masterpiece.
It’s insane how well the lyrics capture just how disconnected from each other we’ve actually become, thinking that we’re all separate and alone, unable to relate, and off in our own fantasy worlds propped up by the digital screens.
You need to watch the video for So Long and Thanks For All The Fish...... Reaction or on your own it's a must watch
Ye gods, Disillusioned hit as hard as it ever did.
Thirteenth Step is probably my favorite album of all time.
Thank you, you are the first person that I've ever heard acknowledge ghost notes & the comping from the drummer
Easily my favorite slow burn yet! Great song choices , excellent video.
Still F***ING here!
So when's Devin Townsend's slow burn happening! Wink wink, nudge nudge.
One thing I think that GLUES every Maynard's work is the tone, quality and good taste of the bass! The timber is always beautiful, the instrument is very present, with so much personality and, of course, very well writen!
Mer De Nom and 13th Step are masterpieces. Eat the Elephant is growing on me. Emotive is meh probably the most forgettable.
I'm still here. Love APC. Maynard always has purpose in his lyrics and there frequently is simultaneous cheekiness to it.
theres something about "The Noose" that i just cant help but sing along to it. also weak and powerless is probably one of their best tracks. its the song that made me want to learn bass the most.
These slowburns are kickass!!!
Perhaps albumreactions as a next step?
🤘
Hearing The Noose always brings me back to when 13th step came out. The Noose is about someone who gets into recovery after a long, terrible addiction and is like “look I’m all better now!” but forgets about all the horrible things they did to their loved ones while in active addiction. Maynard is saying, “that’s great but we need time to heal too, all those atrocious things you did to us were still you, not someone else. Not that we arnt proud of you, but keep that halo in check for a while.”
Noose was engineered like a brontosaurus, quiet at one end, loud in the middle, and then quiet again at the end. Really a wide variance in dynamics. Any other band and this song would have been compressed and squashed and easier for the everyday listener. I remember listening to it on headphones and jacking up the volume only to pay for it later when the song gets loUDER!!. Big admiration for utilizing and playing with headroom as another way of engaging the listener.
You mean a Stegosaurus then
Its easy being original (like yoko ono yelling for example) but being original and good is something rare and a perfect circle is such a great and unique band. Their songs always have a very specific ambient with each one.
Amazing album, amazing band. Josh Freese is a renowned session drummer with a brag worthy catalogue of successful bands whose albums he has drummed on, but watching him perform live is where it’s at. I was mesmerised by his playing for A PERFECT CIRCLE every time they toured here because he is not only flawless, he also amps it up in concert by including extra tasty fills galore and even double-bass. I’ve attended every show they’ve ever played in my city and am yet to see him make even the slightest semblance of an error. The consummate professional.
A perfect circle's artistry is really perfect
Thirteenth Step is the best APC album as far as I'm concerned, I still got tears in my eyes listening to it along with you! I can tell you really love music and it comes through, thanks for this!✌️
Highly recommend listening to By and Down the River by them also, gives me chills every time I hear it
A perfect circle is amazing. Sleeping beauty is my favorite song by them.
I thought you were going to start crying during the noose. It's such a beautifully perfect song.
My favorite slow burn so far. Powerful music
So Long and Thanks for All the Fish is a reference do Douglas Adam's books. I listened to this song a lot when it came out and I love that you imediately got the duality between the happy vibe of the arrangement versus the dark lyrics.
"So Long and Thanks for All the Fish" was very much done to be mockery.
The entire song is a double entendre between celebration and atomic destruction. The song is written in major, with lyrics about mutually assured destruction and the end of our world. The title was taken from the book "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" and there are references to celebrity icons that have passed away. Easily, this song is one of my favorites, and i have seen very few people give it a chance, let alone, comprehend the song.
Weak & Powerless resonates with me too much
“Tuning into each other, lift all higher.” One of my favorite lines ever. It’s so true. When was the last time we just let ourselves be alone with our own thoughts in the silence
Right on, brother.
Josh Freeze is such a good drummer.
I loove that you picked up on some of the lyrics on these - with maynard's writing this is so much of what gives these songs that extra depth
"So long and thanks for all the fish" is from the Douglas Adams' Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy series of books. :)
Absolutely loved this slow burn Geebz glad it got unblocked. I especially loved your reaction to So Long and Thanks...
The way you spoke about the lyrics juxtaposing with composition. You definitely need to watch the music video for it. It's a phenomenal take on home society is becoming increasingly desensitized to atrocities.
If only he knew how accurate he was when he was describing the video for “So Long and Thanks For All the Fish...”
Pretty much exactly what they did hahaha
You NAILED the point of So Long and Thanks For All the Fish. Boy do I love your analyses.
So great seeing you react to this band! "Disillusioned" is such a beautiful track.... that mid section makes me well up every time. The whole Eat The Elephant album is stunning.
Cannot take anything away from any APC album but Eat the Elephant is just something else 👌
My favorite but I don’t know why. Not my typical style but it’s so well done and just grabs me every time. Now I have to go listen to it again…
Great reaction! Lol, hits us all the same 🙂
finaly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!tks THE NOOSE
Meshuggah Slowburn:
1. Pravus
2. Break those bones who sinews gave it motion
3.Straws pulled at random
4. Demiurge
5.Nostrum
🤙
Oh boy, oh boy...
When I first heard "The Noose", I was a teenager, back in 2003-4. Imagine what that felt like. :) Most of us here know, actually, I'm willing to bet.
Thank the maker it was unblocked. Your insights as a audiophile and professional musician are always inspiring and appreciated by all us fans of great music. It wonderful to see justification for listening to what you love and finding new reasons to enjoy music. Keep doing what you do. Stay gold...hahaha.
Sleeping Beauty is an underrated gem.
Thirteenth Step is hands down their masterpiece. Mer De Noms is brilliant but Thirteenth Step is a concept album and the flow is insane.
It’s good to see The Noose move you. When that song came out it was rocking all of us. Still does. Good music.
13th step is a masterpiece through and through. You should definitely spin the whole thing in one go if you get a chance.
This music pulls at heart strings you never knew were there. It really brings out something special
Weak and powerless. Man, what a ride! In my top 3, forever and always. Just the bass alone 💚
Glad they unblocked it! This is amazing. Weak and Powerless and Sleeping Beauty were both on my playlist back high school. They take me back a ways but I just love their sound.
Noose & weak and powerless are the two most underrated apc songs I love them both,
Thanks for all the fish~ is the line from hitchhikers guild to the galaxy, it’s what’s the dolphins say as they leave earth, right before it’s destroyed by aliens to make a galactic motorway
The Noose is my absolute favorite song by them along with the nurse who loved me
You should check out Orestes. Great APC song.
The Stone and Echo live version is amazing.
So stoked you did The Noose! Such a rich and captivating song that pulls you in each time you listen to it.
This song came at a low point of my life; going through a divorce because my ex wife ran off with my supposed lifelong friend.
Geebz, I love all these tracks thank you. I have a new band to recommend to you that has some of the most hypnotizing layering I've ever heard. If you get a chance yo react to Sigur Ros - Saeglopur, and/or Glosoli you will not be disappointing. these 2 arrangements will melt your brain. Thank you for all that you do, keep kickin ass!
This album is the soundtrack to the most intense relationship I’ve ever had. It was 20 years ago now and these songs transport me back to so much emotion, passion, hurt, pleasure etc. it’s such an important album to me. The Noose and Weak and Powerless definitely at the top for me
Drunk on ego
Truly thought I could make it right
If I kissed you one more time to
Help you face the nightmare
But you're far too poisoned for me
Such a fool to think that I can wake you from your slumber
That I could actually heal you
This is one of my favorite APC songs, it just flows, and you can't stop it once you start.
So glad you got it unblocked. Thirteenth Step is such an awesome album. You should really do Blue as well, you'll love it! Still here
I’m always still here! Oofta so much to say about these songs. I’m going to have to break my comments into bite size. First there was a discrepancy between Billy and Maynard about the the lyrical content of The Noose. Both Maynard and Billy’s mothers died roughly the same time. When Billy made the music it was inspired by that moment in his life so he thought that the song should be about their mothers passing. But Maynard didn’t want the content of the song to change the direction of the concept of the album which is about addiction and the many forms and different perspectives of addiction
Powerful song, The Noose. I haven't listened to this song in over 15 years, took me right back to that time.
"So glad to see you well, over come-down, completely silent now, with Heaven's help, you've cast your demons out.. Not to pull your halo down, around your neck and tug you off your cloud, but I'm more than just a little curious how you're planning to go about making your amends... to the dead"
They have some amazing live versions with small nuances that fit so perfectly, so humanly... This thing brings me back to memories of scenes and experiences as old or older than UA-cam...
I love you Geebz🙏👍👏❣️
You KNOW what your expressing.
You should watch the actual music video for "So Long. " You nailed it
Such an amazing song and video.
Mer de Noms was their first album together, and one of these best. No skips. Brena and Orestes is just perfection, as well as By and Down the River from a later album. Been playing them regularly for 20 years.
So long and thanks for all the fish is a reference to Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy series.
In the books, when the earth is about to be destroyed the Dolphins (being highly intelligent) take off and leave the planet. "So long and thanks for all the fish" is their last words to humanity.
