I'm still here! The whole 13th step album is awesome. The last song "Gravity" is especially beautiful and moving. The album is best appreciated in one listen from beginning to end - definitely a concept album.
This song and The Noose are absolutely gamechanging on this album. I love this album, man. EDIT: I also like APC more than his other bands. Josh Freese on drums man. From The Vandals to Nine Inch Nails to APC, that's a drummer that gets around. I'm still here.
In my honest opinion. I have never heard any front man better than maynard. Taking into consideration his vocals. And his songwriting. A absolute genius.
I love Tool, but I also connect more emotionally with A Perfect Circle. “Orestes” just destroyed me when I saw them perform. 13th Step is the better album, but there is some pure gold on Mer de Noms.
I don't know my dude. Mer de Noms is lighting in a bottle. Especially if you were there as a TOOL fan waiting to find out just what the first APC album was going to be and it blew all expectations. We didn't even know if there would be a second APC album. And just think that in 2000 we got this wonderful trilogy of albums released from APC, Deftones, and Radiohead. Yes, there were others but man, what a succession of releases in such a short time!
Fun (Tragic) note from Greek mythology- Orestes killed his mother and was then haunted by the Furies for his crimes until Athena stepped in. Lots of symbolism floating around in a simple song title.
OMG... Maynard is GENIUS! I named my SON after Maynard James Keenan! 22 years ago! And now my son is a genius guitar and Bass player!!! And plays Cello!
This entire album put me to sleep every night during the hardest time in my life many years ago. I think it’s a masterpiece. I also agree about the Tool comparison- I mean DUDE- it’s TOOL!! But when you need to relax and vibe with complicated simplicity these are the guys. Thanks for the Nostalgia brother. Ps- they sound just as beautiful live! I remember they were throwing guitar picks at each other the whole time just to goof off. It was funny. And Maynard also did stand up comedy between each song. It was a sight to behold.
Besides Maynard, the other main creative force behind A Perfect Circle is guitarist Billy Howerdel. Check out The Stone by his other band Ashes Divide to help discern his contribution to the APC sound. Billy has a solo album coming out this year, and I'm excited to hear it.
please do not underestimate James Iha , or Matt McJunkins, or Jeff, they are all great artists performers and composers, A Perfect circle was formed as a Supergroup.
@@pablerry I'm not taking anything away from the musicianship of the current lineup of A Perfect Circle. However, none of the people you listed were part of the original "supergroup." There have been numerous lineup changes in this band, with only Maynard and Billy as consistent members throughout (and Josh Freese almost from the beginning). All are great musicians, but I said "the other main creative force" because Billy Howerdel has always been the primary music composer, and Maynard, the writer of lyrics and vocal melodies. Creatively, it has always been their collaboration.
If that song isn’t even more relevant today with its message of willfully ignoring reality ...man Like others have said the 13th Step is worth exploring as a whole and don’t sleep on Eat The Elephant as a whole album is a genius work with layers buried in the music theory worth exploring too. MJK is a brilliant and talented artist for sure ( one of my musical heroes) , but Billy Howerdel is a sleeping giant in terms of his craft of music . I get you Geebz I’ve been a Tool fan since a friend played undertow a cassette tape of it and I was not sure about it so they made me a dub , but APC , Puscifer both have equal time shifting which I appreciate more lol . You in your own time should check out iXi music’s break downs of Mer de noms as it’s all theory to see just how nuanced Howerdel’s and MJK’s brilliance juxtaposing runs in even their first LP .
@@jinabrasser9439 Guilty . I bought it day one . Took a superficial listen wasn’t in the right mood for it’s mood and put it away for a couple of years ... I’ll shamefully admit . I misread that first line as, "That song isn't even relevant today with its...", and I got super confused. I STILL haven't checked out iXi music's content, and I keep meaning to. Thank you for the reminder.
@@Arakiel9 Yes her channel has some easy to understand deep dives for sure . Yeah there was a bit of an implied dialect inferred in the first sentence as part of the statement . I amuse me that’s all that matters in the end .
And like Maynard's other band Billy actually contributes to the writing of the songs lyrics in a perfect circle.. since Maynard is a reactive artist he often doesn't add anything until Billy put down all of his ideas
It’s absolutely amazing how much you are able to understand the story of songs without ever listening to the lyrics. It’s like you understand the feeling of the music so well that you are completely beyond the need of an explanation that words are able to conceptualize. (If that makes any sense) I wasn’t sure how to put that into words. 🙏🏼
This was definitely one of my first Perfect Circle songs that got me into the band. Still one of my favorites because of the tone and vibe of the chorus.
So happy you went back in for more APC, this album is so fantastic, start to finish. I really hope you'll do "Noose" next, I'm so keen to hear you decompose the engineering on that song. The drums on that song, while minimalist, just hit you so hard. I'm still here for all that you do!
WOOHOO MORE A PERFECT CIRLCE!!! Thank you for doing another one of their songs! They resonate so strongly with me and I love hearing your take on their music!
Thirteenth Step is an absolute masterpiece both musically and lyrically, and Blue is one of my favorite tracks...so deep and moving. Also, I completely understand your regard for APC. I'm a huge Tool fan, but APC has always had the ability to strip back my emotions and stare directly into my soul.
Mate I’ve followed you since you started and I have never been disappointed with your reactions. The breakdown from you here is brilliant and explains a lot to someone like myself who loves music but doesn’t understand the nuances of it. Love ya work mate and I’m so happy that you can enjoy this music as much as i do
Man, months ago I used to listen to your videos while doing homework but kind of stopped going on UA-cam (idk why, just kind of happened), but I'm glad that you're still uploading more and more great stuff
As always, I'm still here :D Think this was the first song I heard off this album. I would have been hooked anyway, but I was super hooked after this one, just an amazing song, so always nice to hear how you break it down!
Interesting story about this song: Billy didn't intend for this to be a song. He was just setting up the recording equipment and he and Josh improvised the bass and drums. Maynard later heard it and liked it so much he talked Billy into making it a track.
Also if you listen to the bass, there are lots of little differences and Billy sqid in an interview, if you hear that abd think, oh wow that's interesting, is that on purpose? No it's just me fumbling around a bit
I'm in the same boat. Started off fascinated by Tool, now much more an APC fan. I agree, I think it's just where we are in our life's journey. Maynard is an intelligent enough performer to diversify his outputs to cover more people. I certainly appreciate it.
Still here! The thing I have always liked about a perfect circle is the impression of continual narrative in individual albums. Especially in Mer De Noms, 13th Step, and maybe a little less so on Eat the Elephant; each song takes you on a narrative journey, and the change of one track to the next feels like chapters in a saga. Both in composition and lyrics.
I was at the first show when they kicked off this album tour on Halloween Night in San Antonio. What an experience. Maynard was dressed in full clown costume, his shadow cast on a screen in front of him by a spotlight behind him for a few songs before breaking through and continuing the show with those huge clown shoes. It was great.
Not only am I still here, I am always here. Love it. Absolutely love it. Keep going on your journey. Eventually you will be up to speed with the rest of the true fans, for all of the bands you choose to review. Keep it up Brother!
One of my fav songs from Thirteenth Step, pure brilliance! I love all the (small) nuances they have put in there. This record as a whole is fantastic just like Mer De Noms. Geebz, have you ever considered doing full album reviews?
I'm still here. I shan't ever bail on a chance to hear your take on some of my favorite tunes. You're making me a better listener and helping me understand why that music speaks to me so effectively. Thanks...
I actually got into APC before Tool and is is songs like this that really cemented MJKs absolute mastery of emotive lyrics, If you get a chance watch all the videos that were made for Blue after a competition to put in a Video storyboard, they made 4 of them as they were so different and opened up meanings of the song

GEEBZ! THANK YOU! When you get back from your recovery, would absolutely love to hear some from the Eat the Elephant album from A Perfect Circle. Astounding tracks, with beautifully layered compositions!
Don't agree. That album felt way too much like a Puscifer record instead of A Perfect Circle record. WAY too much Maynard influence on the overall sound.
@@donkeydarko77 thats fair, considering that all the vocals were written and recorded by maynard, and he was pretty deep in puscifer at that time, but I still thought Billy's influence on the other instruments was pretty prominent. Still an incredible record, regardless if it 'sounded more like a puscifer record' or not. Disillusioned & By and Down the River fantastically showcase maynard's vocal talents.

A comparison of "Pet" and "Counting Bodies Like Sheep" by A Perfect Circle would be a great video in my opinion. Would love to watch that! Keep up the great work decomposer!
Good reaction, I actually kinda agree with you on APC vs Tool sometimes, it greatly depends on my mood. In my more emotional times, I need APC, but when I'm in a more thoughtful/ponderous mood, then I want Tool. Regarding the music: I'm pretty sure the bass is actually playing throughout, but during the verses he's playing high up the neck with a delay along with the guitar (at least that's what he did when I saw them live). Also, I can hear some sort of phaser/flanger on the bass at around 7:40, and it just adds some cool depth to that bridge.
Still enjoying it all.. Thankyou so much. Blue is one of my favorite APC songs. Love the commentary, always so insightful and I agree with you, APC is my favorite MJK project, too. I still love Tool and Puscifer but APC just are the type of sound I enjoy most. Mike Patton is also one of those inimitable genuises that also reminds of Maynard. Different music totally, but equally amazing. Both diversified geniuses. Keep up the great work. Love your channel.
