In general Maynard is talked about all three projects. I'm not sure about accuracy but in the rise of Puscifer he said smth like: "Tool is for brain, APC is for soul, Puscifer is for body". And yes, I like your reaction to Maynard very much!)

  • @johnseward2934

Glad you've become a fan of all three bands, they are all 3 great in their own way! Being the common element between all 3 bands, Maynard naturally becomes the focus of comparison. The way I look at it is that Maynard's presence in the band compared to the other musicians goes from least in Tool to most in Puscifer with APC sitting in the much more "normal" position for a band. In Tool, the other 3 musicians are absolutely world class, top tier instrumentalists and easily match Maynard's abilities and presence on the album. In fact, I'd say that Danny, Adam, and Justin contribute more to the sound of Tool than Maynard does by a margin that has been increasing the longer their catalogue gets and they have defined the band as really rhythmically/texturally oriented. Maynard is the vocalist of Tool but no one is the frontman/lead. In APC, Maynard is much more a frontman/lead in relation to the rest of the band who are all excellent musicians in their own right, but not quite at the level of Tool's instrumentalists. Maynard brings much more presence and identity to the band, and in some ways, their dynamic is much more like a typical rock band that is melodically driven. What sets them apart from the mainstream is that their music is exceptionally good and does veer into unexpected and unique arrangements. Puscifer is Maynard's band thru and thru. Its his laboratory, his experimentation, his imagination. Almost like a solo venture that he brings other musicians into to round out his vision. Its fun and quirky and all over the place, which means there are tracks of amazing beauty and musicianship and there are tracks that really could have been left on the cutting floor but thats why the band works. Its rough and unpolished but there are some diamonds in there.

I have a hard time calling the Tool guys a higher caliber of instrumentalists than anyone in APC (not super familiar with Puscifer). I’m not sure Josh Freese could be the drummer Danny Carey is, but I’m also pretty certain Danny could not be the 50 different drummers Josh is. They’re all awesome at what they do. James Iha, TVL, Adam Jones, Justin Chancellor, Paz Lenchantin, Jeordie White are all bad motherfuckers of the highest order.

Completely understand. (IMO) TOOL is Danny's band. While everyone contributes and changing any part would make it something different, Danny is driving the boat.
That's (part of) why I say, TOOL is Pink Floyd for the new millennium.

Yes, I agree with this. The main issue I have had with these videos of Tool songs is when Geebz just listens to one song when he should really listen to two or three at a time. For instance, I cannot listen to Disposition, Reflection, or Triad separetely. Same with Lost Keys and Rosetta Stoned or Intension and Right In Two. "The whole is greater than the sum of the parts."
ETA: Not that it's a serious issue for me. Mostly I think it would be a better experience for Geebz to hear certain songs in the broader context of an album. I still prefer to listen to a full album rather than some songs here or there and with certain bainds like this it feels more rewarding to me to get the full dose, rather than a small fix.

I've been here since your 1st Tool video and it's been a blast watching your journey! Many have forgotten that music, like art, is subjective! Some like abstract art some don't! Same with music! So while some diehard Tool fans will be pissed, I get it! I have grown to love APC as much as Tool! I am so excited to watch more APC reactions because you are going to be blown away!! I was blown away by how many APC songs are just incredible!! Please react more to APC!!! Pusifer too! And of course more Tool!! Keep up the great work! I'm still here, lol! Hugs!! ❤

Never has a rabbit hole been so pleasure filled and eye opening, right? It's why I watch reaction channels. I've watched and listened along as at least 8 good channels go down several rabbit holes or music deep dives. Tool is always a hit and it's so fucking cool to see the moment a new Tool fan is born.
I've seen these songs amaze white, black, man, woman, child, young and old, Tool music touches everybody (that likes good music) the same way... initially. Then you start to relisten and pick up on nuance and lyrical meaning. You start listening to each instrument play their parts and eventually you hear it all separately and together at once with Maynard's vocals and lyrics. Doesn't get any better

‘i’m about learning and being informed’ is the purest essence, the key quality and flavour here, the way i sense it. this is why music in general, and of certain bands in particular, is a tool of awakening, and not overly metaphorically. this is why we all resonate here in harmony, seeking synchronisation and reflecting one another as one mind. thank you for all the journeys you’ve shared with us, with me, for your open mind and heart making my life, many miles away, richer and more meaningful. thank you 🙏🙏🙏

As musician and also a hardcore TOOL fan (since 1995), your reaction to "Sober" roped me in and I've been here ever since on this journey with you. Along the way, you have introduced me to too many other great bands to count, that have now all become a part of my Apple Music playlists. For that, and for all of the many dissections that you have done, I say "Thank you". I too am a musical nerd of sorts, I appreciate the way you geek out on the technical aspects of recording in your videos. However, I understand that not everyone who follows you is here for that kind of minutia and I really dig how you go about explaining things in a way that appeals to both kinds of listeners; those who are like me and those who are here to just listen because you are featuring their favorite band. That is why your channel has been so successful, in my humble opinion.
Thank you again Brother Geebz I look forward to the next dissection!!

Key of Geebz, always appreciate your input and have watched you for over a year reacting to this journey with you. I first started as a Tool fan, grew into A Perfect Circle fan, and then got into Puscifer in their infancy. The journey has lead me to enjoy more of Billy Howerdel and his side project of "Ashes Divide" and Carina Round as a whole. One song I can recommend that I see a lack of reactions to as far as A Perfect Circle is "By and Down" so I think you, and others may enjoy that one as its probably one of their most "orchestral" pieces. Keep up the great work! Also, I am "still here"

I saw them for the 3rd time in February and it was hands-down, not only the best Tool show I've been to, but the best show out of all the shows I've been to for any band. Still here bro and always appreciate your take, idea's, and opinions bc I believe it makes us, as fans of your channel take an even deeper dive into the music we've grown up loving and look at it or approach it in a completely different way which hits the heart and mind in a bit different manner. Not only with tool, a perfect circle and puscifer, but as a music affeciendo in general with all the band's and music you love to take deep dive's into. The great amazing thing about music, is it really is a 'love language' to and for the masses, something everyone can get into and understand in their own unique way.
For me personally, it's the approach and the way lyrics hit my heart and soul. The 'meaning' of the song to me and the way lyrics pull on my heart strings is of much more importance than say, the way music in general is actually composed or the rhythm. But at the same exact time, it's the way that a song is composed and sounds just in its own unique and perfect way with all the different timings and intracate instrumental things going on, that actually back up and make a song so much more powerful and give even more meaning to the actual sung lyrical value of music as it is.. This is something I've thought more in detail about, as a fan of your channel for the last year and a half now. Either way man, you're doing amazing work and don't let anybody ever tell you any different.. 💯❤️✌️

I love that you sync with APC as it was the same for me. I was always aware of Tool and never disliked their music, but I was younger at the time and didn't dissect the music like I do now. APC got to me when I was older and started to really relisten and break down songs, and I found the hooks and melodies to be more appealing to me. The same way you might understand/relate to complex themes and emotions in movies and books more when you are older and wiser. I have 3 UA-cam music channels I love exclusively, and they all seem to be drawn to rock for the same reasons, despite some of them being new to the genre.....just goes to show that great music is great music, no matter what you prefer!
Key of Geebz....for the engineering and nuts/n/bolts breakdown.

I feel exactly the same way about APC. The impact of the sounds and the lyrical journey from that band, especially those first two albums, touch me in a sort of... it's like in my native emotional language. And I love you're saving things for reactions because we all appreciate that you're here and doing this, but it's almost a shame sometimes because just like I say with Radiohead, the albums stand alone as singular pieces. So much of what makes it special is the order they choose for the tracks or the musical or lyrical themes that evolve from track 1 to track 12 or whatever. A Perfect Circle is one of those bands that really plays with a certain cohesion from track to track, and Thirteenth Step in particular is a very clear concept album with a story that goes from start to finish. (That reminds me, I've got another band I want to tell you about!) So I guess I'm looking forward to the time when you've done all the reactions so you can freely put on an album from start to finish and experience it like you're going to a theater to watch a full movie or something. I'd love to hear you speak to your experience or your thoughts on concept albums, from bands you're already familiar with, or from bands that you've been discovering on the channel. Cheers!

Maynard is one of the most interesting personalities in the music industry. What's wild about him is how much he changes his performance from band to band. I haven't actually seen Tool, but I have seen A Perfect Circle and Puscifer live.
In APC, he presented a more solitary figure. A lot of the time, he was off to the side of the band. Lit in a spotlight and almost in a corner of the stage. He seemed almost shy and reclusive.
In Puscifer, he was someone else entirely. He was a cowboy. He literally wore a lot of western garb, including a black cowboy hat. He was a lot more outgoing and wild. And he was also promoting his wine company Caduceus.
I also actually went to the Caduceus tasting room in Jerome, AZ and actually really liked the wines I tasted. Even my parents did.
I personally prefer APC > Puscifer > Tool, in that order. Puscifer's songs feel a lot more grounded and political, which I really enjoy. They also do some of the most unique covers in probably all of music. What they did to Imagine and When the Levy Breaks is mind-blowing.
Puscifer also has some really great songs, but they're a bit more all over the place. How one band can go from doing Rev 22:20 to The Humbling River to Conditions of My Parole, I don't know. Just amazing.
Tool also has some great songs and the way a lot of them are created are basically mathematical achievements. But as a whole, I just don't connect as much to Tool as I do to the others.

My journey discovering Tool didn't happen until I joined a drum corps and that group, and specifically a few of my fellow drummer friends helped broaden my musical horizons even more by lending me their Smashing pumpkins Mellon Collie and the infinite sadness double cd. Tool, plus all the bands you've been asked to react to eventually coming through as well. That was back in 1995. So even I was late to the party, so to speak. You can never be too late to Tool. Unless you're concerned about seeing them live, then time is running out, lol. I didn't see them until 2002, and haven't since. Wish my disability cheque could afford splurges like that.

I’ve been a fan of the 3 since my late teens, but I have my dad to thank for that in a way. He raised us on prog rock. Especially Pink Floyd and APP.
Speaking of which, Parsons is back at it again. Alan Parsons - From The New World. I’m guessing you might enjoy that.

Geebz! You did ask what is the next Tool song and I actually think "Disposition" is a track to check out. It's kind of an interlude-track but because it has that Opiate -drum-part vibe I think you will really enjoy it. It's not heavy. It's reflective and it does goes right into Reflection which you have heard.

I've been watching your reactions from the very beginning, Tool had been a huge inspiration for me and a reason I picked up the bass both to play and understand music. A Perfect Circle, especially Eat The Elephant material has been on repeat for months. Thanks to your reactions I have found an even deeper appreciation for their songs and for the creative process of Maynard. Thank you.

If I may refommend some content, I'd really love if you could do deep dives into older prog and classic rock bands like Kansas, Yes, Rush etc. And as for modern bands, you should definitely react to more Ghost, they have a wide range of sound styles and complexity.

I'm still here as always, Geebz!
I feel that my experience with Maynard and all other works he's associated with has gone the same way as most others who have listened to them. I got into one of the bands, and then after learning the other projects they were each involved in, I branched out and found even more great works and songs to delve into.
I got into Tool very early on from listening to them on the radio. I heard Sober every now and then, and heard Tool's name tossed around from time to time. Growing up in the early 00's (born in 1996) I was *very* into what my older siblings were listening to (Slipknot, A7X, Disturbed, etc...) and I distinctly remember hearing Schism pop up on 105.9 (The X) here in Pittsburgh like week by week, maybe even day by day! I looked them up to hear more from them, and got hooked on watching nearly ALL of their videos on youtube. I started to get more into having a CD collection, and decided that I needed to start getting their CD's to really show my love, and Tool were the first band that I was able to get their entire discography (besides the famous cassette, and Salival... I'm still looking for a nice copy of that one!) I constitute Tool as the band that really pushed my love for expanding my reach with music, and wanting to seek out new bands, which might become my next favorite!
I heard Judith from APC, and never cared at the time to look at their other stuff; I was stubborn because I loved the sound that Tool had, and A Perfect Circle was still a genre I liked, but not similar to Tool with Adam's style, Danny's fills, etc...
I ended up stretching my legs and giving them a chance with _Mer De Noms_ a good couple of years back, and am now a fan of all projects that these wonderful musicians are a part of.
Music is a journey, but just like a journey in life that you travel for, you have to be the one to take steps, and to actually *go* places. That is what took me along, and allowed me to keep focusing on collecting CD's. My mindset with it, is that if I am going to be collecting CD's, that is just more opportunities to experience great music I might not have ever been exposed to, and I have listened to a LOOOOOT of bands and albums.
My "favorite" song or band is like a revolving door with an expanding & increasing number of entrance points; it always changes, but I always swing back around and pick back up with older favorites!
Thanks for everything you do, Geebz, and appreciate everyone else that is along for this musical journey! Keep on rockin'!

I'm still here. And I'm so glad to hear some gushing about Maynard. He absolutely surrounds himself with amazing musicians but he is a force to be reckoned with. I suggest his book, A Perfect Union of Contrary Things, if you're interested in learning more about him. And Puscifer is just his Id on display for all to see. He always had the want to mix comedy and music and that was Puscifer's birth place. I think he also takes the most chances there vocally as well. Puscifer has been where it's at for his vocals as far as I'm concerned. And the only one who harmonizes better with him than himself is Carina. Their voices together are just breathtaking.

If you haven’t already, please read MJK’s book ‘A Perfect Union of Contrary Things’. It will give you such a great understanding of who he is and why each of the projects he’s involved in have such a unique feel/vibe. Tool is the collaboration of all those unique musicians. APC was actually not initiated by MJK - Billy Howerdel was the main instigator of that group. Puscifer is MJK’s creative and comedic outlet 😉

Tool is a musicians band. Also Maynard always has great musicians surrounding him Bread & Circus by puscifer is great All musicians have to be together in order to make the song work. Especially the live version they did.
