This one hits on a personal level. When I was 19, I was staying in Vegas and preparing to fly back to Illinois. I had about 75 cents and my plane ticket and about 10 hours to find my way across the city to McCarran, so I started hoofing it. An elderly, well to do "gentleman" picked me up on the way and, since I had so much time before I had to be at the airport, offered to take me to his condo for a meal and a few beers. He also wanted me to "get some sleep". After multiple advances and an attempt to grope me in my sleep, I told this guy that I was way too uncomfortable and couldn't stay. He was gracious enough to still drive me to the airport, (I just realized that it was probably to prevent me from heading to the police station. Huh.)
Anyway, it was a terrifying situation, even though I was 19, 6 foot tall and 200 pounds, and this guy looked remarkably similar to our Joe in this story. I'm not a violent person, absolutely abhorr it, actually, but I was 19, broke and desperate. You can imagine the thoughts that flew through my head. It was one of the most terrifying situations in my life. And I've been through some doozies. So maybe Kai isn't as creepy as I thought. I can at least comprehend, if not condone. Peace.

Feels like a transaction gone wrong - the victim must of expected sexual favours while the killer would of been grossed at the mere proposition and some conflict easily occuring, with the easily rage-snapping much stronger hiker dude overpowering the old man. Maybe he didn't deserved life, but for sure 1-2 decades in prison are absolutely deserved.

Saaaame. The old man hanging out at that bus station is sketchy af. Especially since I'm pretty sure bus stations are a pretty common place (throughout most towns/cities in the US at least) to start when you're looking for illegal goods and services. In Baton Rouge last year there was a business man here for work. He disappeared then his body was found dumped in a bad part of town days later. His family/friends/coworkers swore up and down there's no way he was doing drugs or anything of the sort. Yea, turns out he'd been asking around to see if anyone knew where to buy certain types of drugs all evening, the night he disappeared. They have footage of him at the bus station downtown with some people known to be involved in that sort of thing. Long story short, they found out he over dosed while with a drug dealer and two hookers. They panicked and put him in the trunk of a car for a few days. Dumped the body in an empty lot when it started to stink.

I've heard, experienced and seen so many situations of seemingly "good" people trying to "help" you only to learn too late that they want something else from you. Caleb was a good friend of mine, and I am so saddened that his life went this way.
A couple pieces of info I think you missed: he is a Canadian and he grew up in and out of foster homes, where he suffered unspeakable abuse.
During his "home free" phase I believe he was suffering some kind of mental health crisis as he literally grabbed onto a moving freight train one night and left his life behind, and that was the last we saw of him... He had a very nice girlfriend, he was going to school to become a paramedic, and had a job as a personal trainer, and he had friends who would do anything for him.
He was a good friend and he had a (mostly) positive effect on me and my life. He didn't have much, but he would give you the shirt off his back and he was wise beyond his years.
I believe his version of events surrounding the murder, I don't think that justifies the killing... It is what it is. The guy he killed was obviously taking advantage of a mentally ill young man for his own sexual desires.

Honestly, no sex between a homeless person and someone offering shelter for it is truly "consensual". This is known as survival sex, it may not be full blown violent assault but it is still taking advantage of someone just as much as say exploiting an addict is. While Kai could have technically walked away without a real threat from Joe, it may have been an unwalkable area, his gear could have been inaccessible, or he may have felt so repeatedly talked advantage of by this point that he legitimately had a mental breakdown. He also may have been experiencing flashbacks to the situation of being trapped in the car that made him viral that also had witnesses present to corroborate. This may not be a full excuse, but it should be taken into account during sentencing.
I've been homeless. A lot of people look at you as subhuman. I learned fast to not give any man who pulled over and asked if he could help the time of day because they are always sex pests. Please keep in mind that if you've ever had a rough patch where you had to move back in with your parents, you were one step away from us. Deceased family or family who is thoroughly toxic can land you there, though granted sometimes the homeless person is the toxic family themselves.

Kai, you took out a sexual predator. They cannot take that away from your free spirit. You would not have killed randomly or for his money. You are a super hero. Alcohol is a truth serum of sorts. Violence to protect one's dignity and self worth may have been your only recourse. What world would believe a free spirit over a pillar of the community. I hope a few people recognize that.

And it’s I think it’s possible for someone to attack someone in a fit of rage as revenge of them taking advantage of you. As for the investigation, it was terribly done as if they were trying to make Kai appear guilty of murder and not self-defense. Also the trial was clearly not unbiased. Honestly I think the attorney may well have been a predator exploiting a vulnerable young person with nowhere to go. And although Kai reacted disproportionately with the danger he was in, I think many of us might if we woke up disoriented, drugged in the midst of a sexual assault.
Also one interesting point is Kai mentioned waking up with a metallic taste in his mouth, this is a signature side effect of the “Z” group of hypnotic sedatives; zopiclone, zolpidem, zaleplon etc which to me lends credence to the claim he was drugged

He said he was letting my dog in...but she was laying down. Idk. It was strange. He was strange. We gently kicked him out after a few weeks because of our house rules.
That being said, I believe him. He was very genuine. Just unhinged. He made chili for the house one night and it was really good. He paid for the ingredients with his own money he made from busking or whatever else he did. Maybe he just had a harmless crush on me, but he had an intensity that made me nervous. Why was s3men found? If Kai was tricking, he wouldn’t have needed to attack Galfry- you don’t get a return customer that way and why lose more money in the future for quick money instantly when he could go back and make more money whenever he wanted, have a place to stay, and get free food (I met some people in the game in my lifetime- if they’re that nice, you keep them around)?

How do you know the lawyer wasn't? Just because he enjoyed the company of younger men and this particular younger man was willing to BE that company (he's not slow), doesn't make the older person a BAD person. Adolescents are clever and sharp enough to know what they are doing and THIS guy was a full fledged adult, consenting to a relationship.

It’s possible Kai is a victim of a predator, but it’s also possible he is the predator and a compulsive liar, and that even the account about being in the car with Jet is completely made up, maybe it was Kai who steered the car into the truck, who knows really? There are some accounts of ppl who knew him before all this took place who said he was a violent person and terrible to be around, his public image could all just be an act, and looking into his eyes you can kinda see that. He is not this kind hearted free soul some people make him out to be, I think some ppl just mesmerised by his charm.

I'm pretty familiar with this case, and it is definitely not very cut and dry. Kai 100% did not receive a fair trial. Not saying that he is completely blameless for what happened, but I would lose my shit too if I came to and realized that I had been drugged and raped.

    • @WoWGirl6

💯 Dude is not blameless but it’s much more nuanced than face value. Also, it’s funny how they make a distinction between self defense and killing in a fit of rage. That would piss off any dude. Not women perse, but men, definitely. I think women would have had a more cunning approach. There’s one story he covered of a woman who poisoned her stepdad because he had nude photos of her since she was 14 on his laptop.
