  • Let's explore Edinburgh's GREAT OUTDOORS on the one day that actually seems to be pretty friendly to that idea! Today I am off to Balerno to try and walk the whole length of the Water of Leith - a little trekking challenge with a plenty of cool Edinburgh sights to discover on the way. I myself have found some hidden gems to be enjoyed while partaking in this half day walking tour through the leafy valleys of Edinburgh's river, and I CAN'T WAIT to share them with you!

    Lovely to watch! So many beautiful places 😊 In September 2023 I walked with a friend along the Union Canal from Edinburgh to Falkirk Wheel and then further on along the Forth and Clyde Canal to Bowling at the sea outside of Glasgow. We used 6 days for the walking but had a pause day in Linlithgow. It was wonderful and I absolutely recommend it. Thank you for sharing your walk ❤

    I worked on the walkway from Roseburn to Dean Village back in 1985. The old granite setts that cobbled Edinburgh's Victorian streets are now in gabions underneath Roseburn viaduct to what was then known as the Dragonara Hotel. In those days it was a go to place in Edinburgh. Tmes change.

    I mean this video deserves a like for the effort of walking all that way, and of course it was beautifully shot as usual. We walked to Stockbridge along the waters of Leith which was nice. The squirrel jumper looks fabulous on you as well 😊 Hope you had a wonderful time in Skye ( and your poor feet!).

      Can report now that my feet did pretty well by the time I hit Skye! “Thankfully” over there most of the hikes were harder on my gluteus maximus than my feet as everything is always SERIOUSLY UPHILL haha

    The Colinton tunnel was a graffiti-laden shortcut until five years or so ago. Used to be really the worst part of the walk - dark, long, generally depressing. Looking on the tunnel's website now, it says there were still the remnants of a 1980s mural here and there if you knew where to look, but I did not know where to look and had no idea it had ever been painted. The new mural is absolutely wonderful - apparently the funding and organisation was largely a grassroots effort by the people of Colinton. Also remember being taken to the Water of Leith visitor centre as a kid (it was new then!). Had a great time playing with the water engineering exhibit, mostly trying to get the model river as horribly flooded as possible...
    For an accessible/bike-friendly route from Balerno, there's a stair-free connection with the canal around Kirknewton at the Lanark Road footbridge. The canal only goes to Fountainbridge rather than all the way to Leith, though.

    I used to cycle from Trinity to Balerno and back - a lot. It’s a beautiful cycle / walking path. You definitely did it in the right direction, as it’s slightly down hill all the way back to Edinburgh.

    I absolutely love that tunnel! I definitely need to digitally dog ear Colinton Tunnel for photo shoots, in the future, but I want to walk it when I come in December! I want to take my bike down that canal hike, I bet it’s gorgeous during the changes in season. That park looks lovely, and I would very much enjoy a hidden gems video on it! ^.^ I had no idea there was an AIDS memorial in Scotland at all, so this makes me feel very grateful I’ll have a place to go and remember those I’ve lost to it. Completing this from squiggle to squiggle, is now a goal! All in all wonderful video as always! 💗

    The Dell was always my Das way of wearing us out as kids on the weekends ! It’s definitely something people who come to Edinburgh miss !!
    It’s such a simple route too ! And for people visiting Edinburgh, take note. Don’t just visit the Castle and the old town. Go out, visit the Dell, there’s a botanical garden in Saughton. Climb Blackford hill ! Don’t be bound by what the guides tell you to do !

    I did this walk back in the 1990's - in instalments, spread over several months. My favourite part was the bit that passes through Colinton Dell - I actually backtracked and did that section many times.

    Fantastic video! And well done for actually doing the whole lot in a day. I managed from the the very top of Balerno to Stockbridge a few years ago. And then I got tired feet - and a thirsty mouth - and didn't finish it all. ;-) If you've got your hiking hat on, the other way up into the Pentland hills regional park starting from Balerno might be interesting and a bit wilder. I think going via West Kip, Scald Law and a few other peaks might suit the more adventurous! The hills are probably a bit too soggy at the moment, though, Perhaps if we actually get a summer next year? :-)

    • @Kakibot
      @Kakibot  4 місяці тому +1

      I have wanted to make a video about Pentland adventures for ages! Maybe feature two or three possible routes of different skill level? Although…. I’m probably not quite a top tier hiker yet 😅

    • @lordvenusianbroon
      @lordvenusianbroon 4 місяці тому

      @@Kakibot Good idea. I think there are plenty of walks that avoid doing climbing to the top of hills and aren't too long (although when you feel like the challenge, it's a great view looking down on Lothian and further afield from one of the bigger hills!). I'm not a hiker myself but my experience of the park is that it's a bit easier than you imagine to explore.

    I've never walked the whole walkway in one go, but I use it on a regular basis. I live 10 minutes walk from the Visitor Centre and I've taken the bus to Balerno and walked back home, but more often I walk to the Canal which is 5 minutes away then along to the Visitor Centre, walk from their down to Leith then carry on to Ocean Terminal.

      I was just there. Get off at the West End tram stop to get to Dean Village which is a short walk away.. The thing is, if you go east towards Stockbridge, you'll slowly get further and further from the tram line. If you go west, you will go closer to the tram line and can get on at either the Murryfield Stadium or Balgreen tram stations.

    I attempted this walk from Dean Village to Roseburn. I ended up in a modern art museum. I would like to do the whole walk one day. I always get lost so it will be fun 🙃 🙂. I went to The Irish Dude for a coffee stop at Leith the other day, it was a good find.
    I don't live in Edinburgh, I live south of England so when I do come up I like to find hidden gems in a busy area.
    The tunnel in Colinton has always fascinated me with the poetry and how it's maintained by volunteers so after I find that, I'd like to visit the Writers museum.
