WHY is Mexico not a world football power?

  • Mexico SHOULD be a football world power. It’s a nation that’s home to about 130 million people, the 10th largest country in the world. Football is the number one sport by far, they have an incredibly successful domestic league in Liga MX, standout players capable of playing in the world’s top leagues, and a obsessive passion for football. So, what’s the problem?

      1. Thing was..... when they had a good coach like LAVOLPE in 2006 who instilled discipline and kicked out the divas at the time he was ridiculed by Azteca(fake) and Televisa(news) , what's worse is that it was coming from HUGO SANCHEZ who just wanted him out so he could get the JOb and when he got the job , he ddin't know a dang thing.
Guardado said that Lavolpe was an ahole to him and got a lot of the players mad, but Guradado admits that if Lavolpe never pushed him, he would have not have the drive to get better, and he thanked Lavolpe for it.
But if you watch that Mexican team in 2006 vs Argentina that is one of the most well disciplined teams that Mexico ever had , all it was missing was a 17 year old Carlos Vela to turn 26 and this team would have dominated.
I love Cuathemoc but you needed guys like Lavolpe to humble them, and quite frankly when Mexico has a coach that wants to do that the Media attacks them and the FML gets rid of them because it costs them their Advertisments(players) medai darlins like Chicahrito money (loss of advertisment revenue).

  • @Oracol
    @Oracol 5 років тому +104

There's a lot of elements, really:
    1) I agree that the mentality aspect of it definitely is a factor, especially from the media. The media keeps putting the 5th game as the goal.... Why the hell is something Mexico has already achieved supposed to be the goal?? The goal should be at minimum the semis, but the media is stuck in only talking about the 5th game. It's probably the only country in the world that sets a goal for something they've already achieved instead of aiming higher. Mexico has a huge potential of being the dark horse and reaching semis.
    2) Liga MX gives NO opportunities for young Mexican players. Instead, they always choose a 35 year old veteran over a talented young player. If Messi was born in Mexico, they wouldn't debit him until he was 25, and they still wouldn't start him, instead, playing someone with more experience but not nearly as talented. Chicharito, Raúl Jiménez, and many other players have commented on how they almost retired/quit at a young age because they were rarely given opportunities as young players. In Argentina, for instance, or Uruguay, Brazil, etc, what matters most is talent, and it's not rare for a 16 year old to make a professional debut. In Mexico you have to be like 25+ years old to be given a chance to play. The talent exists, Mexico has won the U17 World Cup twice, and the Olympics, but the system in Mexico is a youth talent killer, as it stands.
    3) Sheer f'n bad luck. In WC 86 they lose in penalties in what would have gotten them to the semis. In 1994 again they lose in penalties. In 1990, with Hugo Sanchez in his prime at Real Madrid, Mexico was disqualified from the WC over nonsense. In 98 they were beating Germany 1-0 and had the opportunity for it to be 2-0 and instead lost 2-1. Along with the mentality issue, I can't think of another team in history that loses so many times last minute. They're often their own worst enemy. In 2002 Mexico loses to none other than the U.S. , a team they could and should have beat. In 2006 Mexico is winning vs Argentina and ends up losing in extra time 2-1 in a match where Mexico played better. In 2010 they lost again once more to Argentina. In 2014 they're winning once again, and lose 2-1 in the last second with a non existent penalty. In 2018 they lose vs Brazil. The feeling is always that they could've done more.

      @m.c.martin 3 роки тому +12

Mexico hasn’t achieved a QF away from Home Soil. In 1988 there was a bribery scandal that was uncovered (with the help of US Officials) that the president of Mexico’s FA and I believe the President of Concacaf was as well. FIFA had no choice but to ban Mexico from the 1990 WC. So that meant Costa Rica and someone else, someone new, would go to the WC. Who was it? The US. So I’ve always had my doubts about America qualifying as legitimate in 1990 since it served as a promotional tournament for 1994. I was born in 96 but this is what it seems like.
In the US, our focus is winning the World Cup, and our failure playing Vets and people 29+ is why the US ultimately failed, which has allowed us to play younger players, focus on youth development, and just sell players to Europe.
Mexico’s fans won’t accept failure and as a result, they won’t learn. Mexico has been stuck in the same place for 20 years and they expect a different result. That is why they don’t get to where they want. They don’t admit failure. As a program, and as fans. That’s the definition of insanity.
Luckily the US doesn’t have a large following, so there wasn’t too much scrutiny on changing. We have players in Europe getting regular minutes now. The US has seen a large improvement since. The US finally dropped the stupid notion of the MLS ever competing and over taking Europe. They are willing to even sell players to Europe for less than $3 million dollars, something we hadn’t seen before. They were like Mexico, wanting to play players who were old vets, trying to show case the MLS’ talent, but the young players weren’t playing. That changed with Klinsmann. And I have a feeling Tata will change Mexico in a much similar way.

    • @Oracol
      @Oracol 3 роки тому +6

@@m.c.martin exactly, i agree 100%. I love that the US is giving so much opportunities for young talent to grow. Mexico needs to learn from this. Tata comes from the Argentinian school "talent first above all" so I'm glad he's also giving opportunities to young talent.
Mexican players also need to start taking a pay cut and move to Europe on the cheap, as many successful South American players have done time and time again for pennies (or FREE on loan). Mexican players want to leave to Europe for millions only, but they should be willing to leave for less to advance their careers. Some of the most successful South American players went to Europe on the cheap to small teams first, like Suarez or David Luiz (on loan), Dani Alves, and many others.

that being said the issues with the concacaf being so weak (really money issues) has NOTHING to do with mexico and the powerhouse they should be....take Bayern/juve/barca/real madrid…..just because they don't play in the EPL where every team gives you a challenge doesn't mean they don't destroy the league and their weaker opponents year in and year out.
I think pavel pardo is 100% right in every single point he made on this video...the teams blocking talent from leaving to play in the EU with higher level competition/talent.
and the players themselves being too comfortable playing within mexico that they don't improve/take the next step and develop a winning/YES WE CAN type of mentality...instead they are starstruck by teams like spain and lose.

Of course there are obscure sports such as water polo and pentathlon and cross country skiing that you mainly see in the Olympics or perhaps not, and they don't have enough of a fan base so as to be profitable to participate in.

There are a lot of factors in building a powerful football nation. Funds and popularity of the game are a big factor obviously. An underrated factor is the priorities of the clubs. If you notice successful countries like Holland, Croatia, Sweden and Belgium, they all have well funded football programs, but their clubs don't go on big spending sprees in free agency but instead spend a lot of their resources on their youth programs. They also make it a priority to give youngsters playing time.

The problem to why México football doesnt show pogress is also because we dont let mexican footballers play in europe long enough . I mean they barely have 2 or 3 years playing in europe and the mexican teams in liga mx already want to bring them back to México. Carlos Calcedo played as a starter at frankfurt, Diego Reyes played very well with porto, in which these players Are bearly in their mid20s and now they might go back playing for Tigres. The liga mx and the mls tried to get chicharito, marco fabian, the dos santos brothers and even Andrés Guardado to play on their leagues. These players(except for Guardado) are not in their 30s yet and the mls and liga mx already want to bring them back to help their teams. These players should stay in europe so they can explode their true potential in the best leagues Where the best players play.

You have to constantly play against very strong oppoments so you can get used to it.

ROADSHOW you switch the subject from talking about Pelé and Maradona to Mexico. There Are over 207ish(may be more) national teams aproved by FIFA in this world. México has been making it in the last 16 in the last 6 world cup competition. If México always makes it in the best 16 out of the 207ish countries in the world, doesnt that makes México One of the best?México used to almost always be desqualified from the group stage in almost every world cup in the past(50s, 60s,70s, 80s).Now México has the possibility to make it in the last 16 in the world instead of the best 32 in the world. That means that Mexican soccer has improve over the last couples of decades. It was in the 90s when México started to make it in the best 16 and it was in the 90s when México started to have more mexican players playing in Europe. México won the confederation world cup in 1999 against Brazi(you can Watch it in UA-cam) and how is that not pogress? In the decade(2010-2019) we have increased the number of mexican players playing in Europe. This is also a good sign that México is making pogress. My point is that since the 90s, México has increase its potential in soccer and is making a lot of pogress. Im an fully aware that we Are not in the same level as brazil and germany buy we do have the tools(soccer players from Europe, investment money, and a good soccer coach) to beat any rival from any country, thats why we Are Now capable of making it in the best 16 teams in the world and even may be making it to the finals by 2026. The world cup of 2026 is our chance to make it far in North American soil.

If people restrain themselves to fill a stadium in a mediocre match like yesterday's Mexico vs Cuba, things would change rapidly. And that will never happen, because nostalgia sells, and there are a lot of Mexicans and Mexican-americans, chicanos as we say in Mexico, that go to those matches just to see their team. Edson hadn't received a formal offer from any European club and he still hasn't as of yet. How is a player supposed to go play European football if there hasn't been a proper bid from any team? Regarding the contract extension, Edson renewed his contract with América which leaves them with the ability to put a fee on his transfer. This is crucial as there was already interest in him since last year, but this will be even more prevalent since he'll be participating with México during this year's Gold cup. Which means more teams could find interest in the player during this summer's transfer widow.

The addition of of foreign players could help Liga MX be more competitive. If mexican players want spots on mexican teams they're gonna HAVE to be better. If you cant send the players to the competitive leagues, bring the competitive league to the players.

Carlos Nieto the foreign talent is actually the problem in Mexico. While liga mx is full of foreigners, they’re not giving enough opportunities to the young Mexican players.

Carlos Nieto lol they already have a lot of foreign players. So many that many people are arguing they should stop bringing them so they can focus on developing local talent domestically. Most of the players are South Americans.

Mexico loves football. Look at the African players who are top footballers playing in European Leagues making top money. African children play football on dirt fields, no shoes, a plastic bag filled with newspaper for a soccer ball, goal posts made from rocks or wooden sticks. Yet we see top African footballers making top Euros in La Liga, Bundesliga, Premiere League, Ligue 1, Serie A. Okay, I admit no African teams have won the World Cup. But Morocco made it to the Quarter Finals in World Cup 2022. Mexico has a population which translate to a large talent pool. Mexicans love football. Mexican fans follow Mexico's National Team everywhere. When Mexico play the US in the USA, Mexican fans outnumber Gringo-Americanos 3 to 1. American fans of Mexican descent cheer for Mexico. Liga MX pay 10-12 million dollars (or is it pesos) for top Mexican players. Mexican footballers can make a good living playing the game they love and still eat Mexican tacos at home. So why is Mexico not on the level of Argentina or Brazil. Mexico is only a little better than the US. In fact lately, the US A-squad has been beating the Mexican A-squad consistently. Africans prove you just need to love the game. You don't need fancy boots, fancy football pitch, fancy goal posts, or fancy football academies. But you do need a high paying professional football league. Mexico has that. Mexicans worship football like a religion. Yet Mexico can only get to the final 16 in World Cup play? Americans (citizens of the USA) do not love football. We have some football fanatics, but they love football played with a fig-shaped ball and players wear a helmet. So Americans have made it to the final 16 in World Cup play, excluding 1930 when the US Mens National Team reached the semi-final. What is Mexico's excuse? Mentality. What is that? Footballers are trained to win. Mentality is preventing Mexico from reaching the quarter-, semi-, and final of World Cup play. Can you define mentality? Or is that a word someone made up? So Mexicans have convinced themselves that they cannot get pass final 16 in World Cup competition. Why don't you just say gubligot is preventing Mexico from reaching the quarter-, semi-, and final of World Cup play. I heard one Mexican Coach of the National Team say that Mexican players need to play against the top footballers in the world to build a World Cup winner. That makes sense. If Mexican footballers play against the top players in the world in Europe then Mexican footballers can beat the top footballers in the world. No. That can't be it. It is mentality. It is developing the best talent you have against the best talent in the world every time you play football. No, it is mentality.

    Simple.
    lack of concentration and focus
    equals conformist.
    Example.
When Mexico beat Germany, Chicharito shouted and celebrated as if he had already won the World Cup and also many of them went to parrandear losing concentration. They forget that we have to focus on the objective of winning the World Cup, not just good performance.

I'm from Peru, but yesterday I went on a trip with some friends from Colombia and Ecuador to Buenos Aires, we met another Brazilian, Uruguayan, Chilean friends because we like music a lot. So we went to Mexico to see a MANA concert, one day we kicked a coconut in the street and surprise! they called us for the Mexico national football team, so we could play the Gold Cup. They told us that Mexico will have a great opportunity to be world champion in the parallel world organized with teams of a similar level like in CONCACAF:
    GROUP A
    Zamunda
    Wakanda
    Mount Paozu
    Ganges River
    GROUP B (GROUP OF DEATH)
    Mexico
    Chernobyl
    Bermuda Triangle
    Bikini Bottom
    GROUP C
    Felicity
    Easter Island
    Narnia
    Vatican CITY
    GROUP D
    Gotham city
    Etna Volcano
    Gryffindor
    Fantasy Island
    GROUP E
    Hogwarts College
    Islands women
    Asgard
    Atlantis
    GROUP F
    Neverland
    Shan-Grilá
    Planet Namek
    Moon of Endor
    GROUP G
    Krypton
    Arcadia
    Liliput
    Melmac
    GROUP H
    Lazy Town
    Seven Kingdoms
    City of Esmeralda
    Gondor

Mexico hosting friendlies in the USA is at fault and the fans attending the games are at fault! Spending $1k as the cheapest just to attend a friendly against some random national team NEVER helps the team get better. It's only deepening pockets for the corrupt federation! The fans are at fault for going to these games!

Seems that Mexico’s failure is due to its own success at home. If I was a player and got paid well, I too would stay home to be with my family and friends. It’s too bad, really. As a US fan I support the USA first, but Mexico is the next team that I always root for to do well. For that matter, I cheer for all America teams, North, Central, and South.

  • @AfterLifeGuru
    @AfterLifeGuru 5 років тому +15

Real reason: Liga MX makes too much money. European scouts looking to poach talent can get a promising young brazilian or colombian for pennies on the dollar compared to a mexican on wages alone, meaning less mexicans develop in the top leagues. Mexico also overhypes their youth and tries to sell them for a premium, AND chivas makes mexican players more expensive since they only play mexican players and drive up demand inside the league. A lot of mexican players that do go to europe usually take a pay cut at first.
Mexican teams need to collectively agree to offer european teams reasonable prices so that their players can develop in the best leagues like south americans.

For Mexico 🇲🇽 winning the Gold Cup doesn't mean much a anymore because the other teams play at a lower level.
If Mexico 🇲🇽 wins the Copa America then we will see riots in Mexico City, it will be like winning the World Cup.
But for Mexico to win a Copa America means that they have beaten a truly excellent South American team, something that
Mexico is not ready to do.
Mexico 🇲🇽 as a North American football power ? You bet 😉
Mexico 🇲🇽 as a regional football power representing North and South America ? Not yet 😉
Good luck to Mexico 🇲🇽 in Qatar 2022 ⚽️
    Greetings from Germany...🍺🖐

The managers have been absolutely pitiful, most recently with Osorio deciding to start Rafael Marquez, a washed out 39-year old, against Brazil in the Round of 16.
And of course, it's Mexico's FA that views the national team as a cash cow, whether it would be for ticket sales (the vast majority of its friendlies are not in Mexico, but in the United States, which has larger stadiums to fill) or using the team as a way to showcase up and coming players from the big two (America and Chivas) via national team games to acquire interest from European clubs. It's all a business, success has never been the intention, and likely won't for some time.

I've been saying this for a long time, the reason that Mexico never has taken that next step is because their players don't want to go abroad. They want to stay where their comfortable, where their family lives, where they speak the language. And since LigaMX actually pays a good salary it's no wonder why they don't leave. But now with countless USMNT youth players like Adams, Pulisic, McKennie, Sargent, Weah, Robinson, Brooks, and countless others abroad I think it's pressuring Mexican players to make that jump which may be a good thing. Because Mexico has always been content with being better than USMNT. So if all those players I mentioned live up to their potential, mexico will have no choice than to sell their players at reasonable prices so their NT can improve.
