It can be a bit tricky to set up indeed. I found with the 4th option you can put the vocoder on any synth and then have the vocals (or other sounds) as an input through side chaining. That way you get more control over the sound through your synth of choice. The internal synth of the vocoder is then bypassed, which is pretty limited anyway.
I tried it out in Bitwig, the setup was a bit of a nightmare as the manual does not tell you that the vocoder needs to sit on the audio channel as an audio fx and the notes just setup in an empty instrument channel...kinda odd but it works now

When I get time, I want to spend more time with Bitwig as it's really interesting... but I think I'm about 6 months away from having the time to devote to it; then I'd probably put setups for it in videos as well, as things like that can be tricky and take a while to find out how to do them.
I have the PRo Tools version AAX, but I don't have any of the Side Chain options you have at the top to asssign SC. Why is that?? How do I SC an external synth for the Crrier signal?
I'm not sure - I don't have a current version of ProTools. It's not mentioned in the manual, so I couldn't find a quick pointer on how to get it working - sorry!

Apparently in a previous version of the Tal Vocoder this was possible and even deatiled in some UA-cam videos...but with version 3, it's not as apparent how to do that

Can’t you use it with a microphone and a midi controller in real time such as a normal vocoder?
Absolutely, providing you have low enough latency set on the audio, it'll work. I just didn't want to subject anyone to my singing!
