A vocoder/formant filter chops the frequency spectrum of the instrument and your voice into small slices. The amplitude of frequencies in these slices is used to change the amplitudes of the corresponding slices in the instrument signal. I hope this helps understanding this thing!? ;)

Not just any mic, you can use the mic that comes with the Microkorg using the 3.5mm jack. Alternatively, I think you can use a dynamic mic 🎤 that plugs into the 1/4” plug which is what I did for this video

A dynamic mic 🎤 can go straight in. A condenser mic (podcast style) needs to go through a preamp and the preamp out can go into the Microkorg (in that case the input should be set to line)
A computer mic is probably dynamic (it’s not about the shape but the technology) so it should. It’s worth a try as long as it can put out a decent output level, you should be able to vocode that. Trial and error as always.
My vocoder makes no sound at all. It acknowledges it as if I am making sound but nothing is coming out. I've tried following everything you're saying and nothing. I'm so confused. Please help.
Sorry, I don't have the microkorg anymore so I can't give you a definite answer. I'd recommend trying a compressor on your voice or seeing if there's a mix setting were you can blend in some of your original voice.
I just put one on layaway for $299.00 I don't believe that it has the vocoder mic with it. Does anyone know how I can purchase a new one? And I also have a Yamaha keyboard that doesn't have midi outputs, or inputs, I'm wondering if there's a way that I can join the microKorg with the Yamaha? 🤔
If the Microkorg is new it should come with one even if it’s a basic mic. If your Yamaha kb has usb midi you could use a usb midi interface or usb audio interface with MIDi to connect the two
Are you using 1/4inch jacks left and right? Dumb question but I can't seem to hook up my microkorg. I bought a cable that's 1/4 inch one end and rc phono the other end and I only hear in from the left speaker.
Im looking for vocoders, can you tell me if it is better to find software that do this trick or there is a hardwre alternative to keyboard vocoder as i plan to buy ctrl m audio midi keyboard and i only need the voice changing effect making my voice sound as different instruments and layering it to make a full song out of my voice, is this possible? Im a beginner so i would greatly appreciate your input, thanks!
Honestly I don't know but my best guess is, the vocoder audio is clearer (enhanced) after it's recorded and mixed. Because yeah live, it's hard to not hear my own voice over the microkorg which... Kills the vibe lol
15 years of trial and error and occasionally reading a manual. For the microkorg, the manual is very good, will definitely help to understand the vocoder engine.
Yeah the included mic is not the best, I found better results with a dynamic mic going into a preamp to boost the signal and then into the Microkorg (set to line level input if I remember correctly)
Hey, my keyboard died mid response. Anyways, I only know of the EMS 2000 by the legendary reputation that precedes it. I would say the Microkorg has a capable vocoder that I found easy to use when I had it. I strongly recommend you use it with an external microphone (ideally you can run the external mic through a preamp and then bring it into the microkorg external input at line level). The internet tells me that the EMS is a 16 band vocoder, I know the microkorg is an 8 band vocoder which means it will have a different sound quality but I found it to be easy to program and giving great results.
