Personally I think he and Walt Disney have more in common than people realize - especially their childhoods. They were both forced to grow up fast to support their parents through tough times.
And as leaders they were both unable to pass their role on to anyone else. And it looks to me like when Miyazaki leaves this world, the same thing will happen to Ghibli that happened to Disney - with no clear successor to him, the studio will fall to the corporate leadership.
Honestly, there’s a good reason why I call Studio Ghibli is Japan’s Walt Disney Animation Studios.
I can understand Miyazaki in this. His son betrayed everything Ghibli stood for, exchanging amazing hand drawn animation with generic 3D stuff. Like it or hate it but you do not leave a legacy like this being anything but a strict perfectionist. He did everything for his vision and less for his own ego and fame, I wouldn't call him a tyrant for that.
Charlie Chaplin was the same for that reason.
@@ScipionyxsamNeglecting your son and being an excuse of a father is pretty tyrant like tbh
@@Childofbhaal sometimes being a tryant is a necessary evil. Miyazaki did what is absolutely necessary to preserve his studio.
@@Childofbhaal
This type of parenting usually stems from jealousy.
Jealous that their children is living in better times and often comparing their children'' time now vs the parent's time back then which usually was "harder," atleast to their perspective.
Because of this, they (the parents) usually treat their children worse as to replicate what they experienced in their own childhoods.
As the old saying goes:
"Weak men create bad times,
Bad times create strong men,
Strong men create great times,
Great times create weak men."
I’m Italian, I was born in 1974 and I just realized that most of the cartoons and series I watched as a child were Miyazaki’s works. At the time in Italy, cartoons were only a children thing, and all the series that you could find on television were coming from Japan. I started to watch Lupin series when I was around 10 years old. I’m still a fan of his work and passing this passion to my daughters.
Know he isn’t a fan of most modern anime but without this man many modern anime wouldn’t be around and definitely not as popular. Grave of the Fireflies is one the first anime that made me cry. As a grown man believe I would still tear up if I watched it. To me an anime that can generate emotion in the audience is a sign of a great story. Love studio Ghibli as a kid of the nineties and animated movies have to thank this man for his work.
Miyazaki was not the director of Grave of the Fireflies, it was Isao Takahata.
@@joseluishernandezseptien Thank you, this needs to be corrected.
Yeah, I would trust Hayao on his judgement of most modern anime, but I don’t dislike some of them.
He is mostly correct on Anime but it is not all bad. But I don't think the existence of anime is due to him. Maybe the direction into which it went and the high artistic values and topics he tried to delve into
🙄🙄🙄🙄 good story is good story 😊
My first ever Ghibli film was Spirited Away, but I’ve grown to love older films like Castle in the Sky and Kiki’s delivery service.
Same here on toonami 😂
Kiki's was my first. They used to show it on Disney channel when I was a kid
Spirited away was my first too, our school used it as a teaching lesson (not that I remember why lol) I was hooked and have since watched all of the Ghibli films Kiki is definitely one of my favorites
heidi on channel 4 for me- i don't even think it was ever dubbed in english but german (we picked up on the weak lip sync) and the music would flip between the german and japanese. then same for grave and totoro i think. didn't grasp the origin of the films but stuck in my brain till i got mononuke on dvd- i completly forgot it got advertised in the cinema! got most the movies so far, many of the wmt.
Mt first was spirited away too. Randomly picked it up from a blockbuster and loved it. I didnt know who made it and was too young to know to check. I was mich older when I found Miyazaki again. I saw spirited away again and was like "oh shit its that weird awesome movie I saw as a kid." Went on to watch Princess Mononoke which is now one of my favorite movies ever. Havent gotten a chance to watch much more of his.
A man so focused on his dream that end up turning into a timeless genius. Thank you Hayao-San
Hayao-sama
His work is such a massive part of my life and provides me with intense warmth, safety and an intrigue. Despite having watched Ghibli almost daily for years, my love for it only grows. Spirited Away is my favourite, with Howl's Moving Castle in second.
Today I just saw The Boy and the Heron and it was unbelievable!!! If you haven’t seen it yet, you absolutely MUST!! I’ll see it again but I’m still basking in the afterglow of the beautiful movie he created!!!
He's one of those people who uses his work to hide the fact that every other aspect of his life has suffered because of his work. I feel bad for his children.
🙄🙄🙄
*Indeed. I guess 99.9% of ALL the great men we worshipped as kids were all **#EGOMANIACS**, in a sense. It ALWAYS boils down to man's **#PRIDE** & **#EGOTISM**. **_It's just a guy thing-_** however people or the mob try to spin the narrative or deflect & justify by sugarcoating his actions. It's always about the male **#EGO**, which always gets **#TOXIC** soon.* ♂️☢️
.... and his wife who was even brighter than him and sacrificed herself for this life.not that thats wrong but i can only imagine how that must feel
@@noinflouencerwasn't it her choice, though?
Anyone who quarreled with Weinstein can't be all that bad.
Funnily enough, my favorite Ghibli movie is Whisper Of the Heart, directed by Yoshifumi Kondo, the supposed successor of Isao Takahata and Hayao Miyazaki who sadly passed away too soon.
his work ethic is astonishing. he really earned his spot in history
he sounds like a pos. we need to stop putting these monsters on a pedestal just because they have a personality that integrates well with capitalism.
"Astonishing" lol
I admire him. I think he's a real artist, has made huge impact on animation and influenced generations. He's weird in some way but that contributes to him being an icon. My fav movie from him is Howls moving castle but I watched all of them.
Wonderful documentary thank you for your work.
However I don't really like how he treats his son
@@bamboo_procrastinates Definitely. The man has flaws. He could have treated his son better. I understand he wants his son to do better, because let's be honest, lots of people don't remember anything about Tales from Earthsea. However, that doesn't mean he should be a douch to Goro.
@@rockocandyeye yeah like he straight up left the theater for a smoke. Sure he came back to watch everything but come on
And it was all on tv
@@bamboo_procrastinates He could have write down some notes and give it to his son, so he could know what to improve. Then again, we don't know what their relationship was like before Goro's movie.
You are not impartial you loved him too much
Castle of Cagliostro is a masterpiece, one of my favorite films ever
Here we are with and he has his 2nd Oscar win as well as the Governors Award and he wants to do another film! He truly is the man who can't stop!
Spirited Away and Laputa: The Flying Island (Castle in the Sky) are in my top 20 movies of all time. What a genius!
Totoro!! I grew up in Western Tokyo, but every summer we spent 6 weeks in Nagano by Lake Nojiri. The farms, houses, and natural world in the movie exactly depicts my childhood summer wonderland. So beautiful...
I tend to favor the older Ghibli Films. Nausicaa, Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro, and Kiki's Delivery Service. Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away are both masterpieces, Howl's Moving Castle is beautiful and fun if a little cluttered and confusing at times, and Nausicaa has a vibe and aesthetic that I adore that hasn't really been captured in any of his works since. My personal favorite though is Castle in the Sky. I just love how it's a pure, fun adventure. Great characters, thrilling action, an interesting setting (Laputa), and amazing music. It's my favorite animated film.
I share your exact sentiments to a T. Laputa and Totoro are my favorites, and i tend to look less on his later output, especially Howl's, which I personally think by far is his weakest movie, but it seems it's the favorite of all the new generation of Ghibli fans. This is coming from one OG Ghibli fan who bought the butchered video of Nausicaa; Warriors of the Wind, when it was first released.
My bf and I loved howls moving caste the first time we saw it. We still rewatch that and spirited away the most
Same. I admired Nausicaa to the tea! It is my most favored Ghibli work and one that I first introduced to my nieces.
Howl's Moving Castle is my favourite when I feel down but I have watched and liked so many others
Me too! It's my go to hug on screen
Yes it was deeply moving
My favorite films of his happen to be one that he regrets and one he felt was difficult to write the antagonist for. These being Porko Rosso and Castle in the Sky.
I love his films because they encapsulate such magic, even in the mundane, and seem closer to dreams than films.
"Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind" is my favorite of his works.
Me too. I love this movie so much!!
@@stacysky3017manga is better

I think that what japanese are the best at, is enlightening simple every day moments. Whether it'd be in Animes or movies... And Up On Poppy Hill is my favorite Ghibli movie, so I'm really glad someone came to talk about it! (it's not the best Ghibli, but it just speaks to me)
There is no way to create something like Spirted away without hardwork.
Such a well made video showing the life of possibly one of the greatest animators to walk the earth. Thank you, loved it. :)
thank you for this. I was shocked at first trying to find out how i missed his passing. Then looked it up to realize that i was just understanding the title wrong. I watched the entire video and it was wonderful. Thank you again for your work and effort to bring this to us. Long have i wondered about Miazaki and now i feel it answered.
Excellent work. Thank you for this. As a kid of the 80's I grew up with his movies. He is one of the best, absolute unique artists. His world building and character design is on another level. Nausicaä and princess mononoke are my favorite of his, just by the times I watched them, though in my book every miyazaki-movie is a class of it's own. :)
Miyazaki is the most overlooked antiwar artist since the begining of history.
XDDDD
My first studio Ghibli film was Spirited Away, a master piece. I have watched every single film produced by Studio Ghibli and have got my two children into them. I love the fact his leads are mostly young Girls. His films are infused with such beauty mixed with a sense of the real world and the sprit world. Offering no trite answers to many of life's issues.
Thank you for making this!
Thank you so much for putting this together
One thing I took away is that Miyazaki is honest,
There is no man like this MAN ❤️❤️♾♾
Fantastic biography and summary! I am really enjoying this! Thanks for making it.
the best film maker of all time -Hayao Miyazaki and I can't wait to watch "the boy and the heron" next week!!!!!!
A man who had no good memories from his childhood created many beautiful memories for millions and millions of other children with his art from inner world
Interesting, now that I’ve watched the Boy and the Heron, I’ve started seeing some negative backdrops turn into wispy moments that resemble Miyazaki’s world in film. This has lightened my spirit 3X this week, what a wonderful gift. Simple moments in memory of having been immersed in movies like The Moving Castle or Spirited Away, yes, even Ponyo. Thank you Mr. Miyazaki for your dedication to your arts and impeccable craft work. Bringing out the dream world in a safe environment Lol
A hard life can equal amazing art.
so does a good life. why do you guys only focus on the difficult one? is it because it makes a good story?
@@Dave_of_Mordorhe never said a good life could not, he is just making a statement. Notice the emphasis on the word “can”
Fantastic documentary, thank you!
Future Boy Conan is low-key Miyazaki's best work. So, so SO many iconic moments, characters and things from his later films originate in this hidden gem. If you love Ghibli, you must look up Future Boy Conan.
Just watched the show, fantastic!
It's such an incredible show, but I believe it's mostly unknown compared to his other works!
The Boy and the Heron is his new film and it is amazing. A masterwork.
My first Ghibli film was Princess Mononoke, and I immediately became a life long fan. It’s a shame that working with Miyazaki was so difficult for his employees and collaborators, as well as his family. However, one can’t deny the man’s genius and the legendary status his work has reached.
Spirited away was my first taste of what this amazingly talented man creates. It opened the door to me watching My neighbour totoro, the wind rises, howl's moving castle, laputa castle in the sky and many more.
He really does deserve all the praise possible for such hard work, dedication, and pure imagination he puts into each and every one of his visually stunning films.
I'll be a fan forever.
Thank you for this in depth dive into this conflicted, unique life - that seems to keep on giving.
Thank you for this. I have been meaning to check out some of his documentaries so I can do a video where I share my thoughts. I will definitely share a link of this video.
Thank you. I am writing my Junior Thesis on The Philosophy of Studio Ghibli and this background to the genius of a man behind it helped incredibly. I feel as though I understand his thought process now and see the signs of it in his directing and it’s such an interesting point of view to watch the films from, that I can’t see myself viewing them differently ever again. Who knows, maybe I’m corrupt for life, now.
Thorough research and careful attention to details in this documentary resembles the love to detail by Hayao-san. Brilliant biographic review, tons of curious facts and respectful tone, all together made it a great fun to watch. Human experience is filled with walking down the "grey area", it's not all black and white. In that sense personal family happiness sacrificed for the personal purpose of the master himself provides additional clue into better understanding of his characters. Production wise, I can only imagine how many hours it took to collect all the materials, make the script and edit everything together. I just discovered your channel thanks to the interest in this subject but subscribed after 5 minutes into the film. Brilliant work @Biographer, you guys do a great job!
it's fascinating! I feel like every great artist has had some sort of internal conflict in childhood, it's so sad especially the part he says he worked to forget those thoughts and he did
only yesterday is my favourite animation movie ever
How your childhood affects your adult life is amazing and when you are a caring intelligent person,it's very difficult, but for that reason it gives us amazing films that we can all relate too.Thankyou for a great video.
Now I'm crying. I've watched this movie so many times and couldn't really piece all the meanings together, but this is just do touching and beautiful
It’s kinda like his art is a representation of the childhood he wished he had.
A great video on Miya-San and his work, thorough;y enjoyable. Congratulations, well done!
Poor Hayao has no idea how cool he always was.
Love your films thank you for sharing them with us.
Spirited away is our favorite to watch. He is an amazing animator
I love how Disney knew they would never be creative enough to create something as inspirational as Spirited Away, so they worked with Miyazaki to legally dub it in the US. xD
Miyazaki certainly has created masterful works. I wish he would make one more, but I understand if he doesn’t.
There is one upcoming now: The boy and the heron, made by Miyazaki, it looks like it's gonna be beautiful👌🙏.
They put too many song plus miyazaki movies its not for all public
Disney is
@@beingnonbeingincludesexistenceeven if it was bad no one gonna say it
All of you are like kpop fans everything is good not songs is bad they are genius meanwhile
A lot are bad even him knows it
Pippi longstockings was one of my favorite series i cant imagine what masterpiece it could have Been if Miyazaki made a film out of it
"Hates war but admires military aircraft". That's not unusual. Look at the Nazis and how cool they looked, even those who call themselves "anti fascist" are fascinated with their image.
Yup, I am german and we of course are very aware of all the horror of that time, but the last time I watched a documentary and there was footage of Himmler and Hitler walking on a street in front of troops, my only thought was : "This lunatic Himmler had the most lit uniform of them all...good job Hugo Boss"😅
@@calistafalcontail Yes, those long leather coats they wore were incredibly fashionable. The Nazis understood intuitively the power of visuals, and people are still fascinated by those visuals.
I personally believe that he admire military aircraft in a way that those same aircraft could've been used for something else that doesn't involve war. Yes he hates war and admires military aircraft at the same time, but he literally grew up seeing aircraft almost everyday. It's one of the factors that shaped his life. Like in "The Wind Rises", Airplanes are given emphasis. One scene there involved a line with something along the lines of Airplanes can be used for something not for war. After all, the original purpose of airplanes is for people to be able to fly, not kill people. And I believe he kept believing on that as well, despite his depictions of war.
I’ve watched a good amount of Miyazaki’s movies but a movie I’ve watched since I was a kid and is still my favorite is Ponyo because even though the art within the movie is beautiful the story of finding the way you want to live your life I have resonated since I had first saw it even when I didn’t understand it. Thank you for this great video it helped me learn a lot more of Miyazaki’s life and thought process:)
Ive lived my whole life ever since I started watching Ghibli thinking Miyazaki was dead because my mother told me that, I'm so happy to hear he's still alive and just retired
Artists like Miyazki comes once in a century. Still going strong!
I love all of his animations...
47:15 "giggly" almost made me spat out my drink
You've done a fantastic job on this biography excellent work.
I’ve just watched his brand new film The Boy and The Heron and I really enjoyed it
this video is amazing!
Great sacrifice will always be required to achieve greatness. I will continue to bless him
I really respect him for always putting his craft first and dedicating his life to it. I’m also a bit jealous of the opportunities and animator friends he had though.
Be careful of what you are jealous of 👀 he drown himself into work!
Plus he was way before Internet and All animée you watch
He read a lot and now with AI 😢
this was fantastic tysm
The Wind Rises is stunning for its breadth of story telling. So many stories in one film
He seems to be very pessimistic yet his anime are inspiring and positively moving❤
Howl's Moving Castle is my favorite! Love the book too!
Thank you for this wonderful video on Mr. Miyazaki's biography.
I have watched 8 of his movies and also bought them (Thanks to Costco) .. missed Porco and Heron (the new one).
his devotion to his work is so admirable
wonderfully done. very insightful. i just watched the boy and the heron, and for me it's one of his top three films. might move higher after i rewatch it and pick up on missed details and messages.
just curious, why the word tyrant in your title here?
This was an amazing and detailed biography! I’ll love to see a Joe Hisaishi biography!
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind is so underrated. It's my absolute favorite. Also, Whisper of the Heart, Princess Monoke is amazing too. Howl's Moving Castle is a great film and also Spirited Away.
Frozen getting picked over wind is a crime
Yes everyone knows Oscars are rigged and biased.
I always thought Frozen was very fucking mid when am first saw it. They were different times when I first liked it.
Omg I used to watch future boy Conan as a kid 😭 though it was dubbed in Arabic and called “ adnan wa lina “but it’s sooo nostalgic I loved that show
this man is the dr.seuss of japan
My first studio Ghibi film that I watched was Howl's moving castle. I have continued to watch other of his amazing films.
as a cyberpunk otaku, my favorite Ghibli/Miyazaki anime is the On Your Mark J-rock music video they made for Chage and Aska in the 90s. Quite literally Angelic, with visually stunning futuristic cyberpunk backgrounds drawn with the Ghibli aesthetic. Makes me wish they made some scifi anime in addition to their fantasy/historical fiction titles...
Thanks for the data... saw Totoro just a few months ago, thinking it would be a waste, but now I'm in love with the artists and looking for more.❤🇩🇴
My brain relaxes and that’s says a lot for me!! ❤
My favourite movie of his creation, is the wind rises, because the quote always stuck with me, even when i was in dark times of my life my head will always say 'the wind is rising we must try to live', i think this is one of the things that brought me here and gave me the will to live, something so simple and meaningful.
I've watched spirited away and howls moving castle wayy too many times, my favorites are princess mononoke and porco rosso
i like his work he made me love with anime
These vlogs about Miyazaki are exhausting to watch. Never is anything: good enough
I've watched most of his films. My favourites are Spirited Away - strong memories partly because of its beauty, partly because me and my mother went by chance as an escape during a very bad period of my life. The other is Porco Rosso - not keen on the romantic songs but everything else was fabulous especially the naughty little schoolgirls - no doubt loved this one because I grew up in Italy. Absolutely hated grave of the fireflies, so heartwrenchingly depressing and haunted me for far too long!
Legend artist ❤🔥🔥🔥😍😍😍❤️❤️❤️❤️
For me my favourite creation of Ghibli studio has to be the first movie that I've watched in cinema in Poland. Mononoke Hime. I'm a collector of soundtracks and music from this animation made a huge impact on me. After seeing Mononoke Hime I became interested more in Hayao works which was not so easily available at that time in Poland. After some time I've watched Spirited Away, Howl's moving castle, Kiki's Delivery Service, Laputa - Castle in the sky, Grave of the fireflies, Nautical, Totoro And I was blown away by the music in those films. It was a period in time when I started to swallow every manga and anime that I could get my hands on. Times when in Poland watching animals and reading mangas was not seeing appropriate as they were considered as stories for children only.
Howls moving castle classic classic and howls voice is so soothing! Who would’ve thought Batman make such a good howl
Hayao Miyazaki, is a well acclaimed manga artist and animator and his works will last the ages Many after him will continue to enjoy his works, and will inspire many to pick up a pen and paper and draw. He is in the same league as Walt Disney, Ub Iworks, Chuck Jones, Tex Avery, Jack Kirby,, William Hanna and Joseph Barbera. For me, the first movie I watched was from him and the studio Ghibli team was Spirited Aeay, and I got hooked, making me watch almost all his films. I highly recommend watching one of his films, and see if your desire takes root, and leaves you watching more. A truly great and exemplary animator.
Amazing man
i wish they would do a double feature again cause the totoro-grave would unironically garner a billion dollars like how barbenheimer did this year
Howls moving castle is my favorite
Inspirational
My first one was Howls moving Castle after that i started BUYING them all I just need his 2 new ones that are not out yet. I think its How do you Live & The boy & the Heron.I just love his movies sorry to know he is retiring
One year and three months long production for the earthquake scene in the movie The Wind Rises that lasts only 4 seconds. Now my head is spinning.
The wind rises is by far my favorite miyazaki film. Possibly my favorite film if not for akira.
I grow up watching Heidi even you dont mention that in here ... after that many years passed and i first watched Porco Roso followed by Totoro and after all the others
Wow I thot this would be more popular
Masterful.
