  • It's time to collect some trees that have been growing in the front garden and get them underway as bonsai. I'm collecting a White Ash, Boxwoods, and a European Buckthorn.

With watching you for a number yrs do root work I got up the courage and Nigelized the roots on many of my trees this spring (I'm in Alberta.) I'm pleased to say so far they have all survived don't know if I should be surprised or not but thanks Nigel for all you do

Hi Nigel you just keep producing trees and videos! Respect!
I am always impressed with the fact that you have good images & sound throughout, no matter where you are. Any tips for a fellow YTer?

I really like the ash. It has a tough gnarly look. I hope it grows well and survives. The boxwoods will also be really nice. I dream of growing some of these more northern trees but I think it's too hot where I live. Does anyone have experience growing northern trees in warm climates?

Drastic root pruning is a necessity sometimes. With the hands and skill of a great surgeon, Dr. Saunders, the tree is in good hands and will recover nicely.

Hurleys for the Irish sport Hurling are made from Ash root wood. They look for a nice curving grain structure for the right sections. Kind of makes sense with that thick root come out to the side like that.

Great video Nigel and exactly the same as what I have been doing over the recent weeks. What with the lovely weather we've been having, I've been out in the garden finding all types of plants that could one day become a bonsai.
Nothing better than finding a free tree eh?
    Happy Easter everyone!

    Cool!
It might have been a little early to uproot the ash - I repotted my ash a little too early last year, and it nearly didn't make it. They bud out somewhat late in my experience here in Norway, however they also seem like strong survivors. Let's hope it lives =D

I hope it does well, My wife wants to make a tomato garden in that corner, so all the trees must go! I have too many trees as it is, but I may try and pull a few more out!

With a little TLC, the Ash should recover. Keeping the Emerald Ash borer away a challenge but with a good systemic should help keep it at bay. Usually bores start feeding in early summer.

We have Emerald ash borer here too. The city sprayed all their vulnerable trees. Private owners are able to purchase the chemical to spray their trees, also companies would come to spray. Perhaps it's available for you to protect your tree? It was sprayed by plane in some places here. Those trees you potted look really neat. Fingers crossed they bounce back nicely!

I would say both trees are kind of hardend, and stand a good chance of making a good growspurt, after they've recovered from this first treatment. They both have potential!
Liked watching it happen, thanks for the effort of sharing.

Like the pot that you are using for the ash pre-bonsai. Hope to be able to see another video on it in the upcoming weeks when it begins to sprout. The boxwood are going to make a really nice forest. The buckthorn in the drum pot is going to look good as it sprouts. May they all grow well for you. (Any updates on the Community Garden?)

I don't think I would worry about these two trees. the huge root on the ash had very few fine fiberous roots. As for the European buckthorn. I would say it didn't become an invasive species by being easy to kill.
